- Which one is stronger? Soft link gets pitted against a stainless steel 5/16" hard shackle. I use these soft links to hook in my reserve parachutes. After finding a possible defect in a hard shackle while doing an inspection on my paramotor, I decided to put them to the test. Enjoy!

Screw pin shackles are really designed to be bolted through a piece of plate. Also that doesnt look like a load rated lifting shackle. The gap is wide in proportion to the rest of it. I was still surprised it broke first tho.
Crazy how we automatically assume the steel fasteners will be stronger. Nice video.

Very timely video. This morning a shackle came out of my buddy's harness on his Black Hawk. His lock ring could have been better, cheap wire instead of a ring. He took off and landed without knowing it was gone. It pulled left but all was well. New shackle with lock ring ordered.Good to know a soft shackle can be so strong. Thanks Kyle O

Thanks Kyle! I have a couple soft shackles on my spyder 3. I lost an O-ring on a soft shackle. Getting a new one on there surely would have been easier on the hard shackle. I had read they were stronger, but this simple test made me feel better. Thanks for the video AGAIN I love learning from DESTRUCTION!

Of course, it depends on what material the soft shackle is made from ..... as you can see they stretch to absorb load.
UHMWPE Has near zero stretch. It is one of its shining qualities.

How weird, my flying buddy emailed this UA-cam video this afternoon and I lost my shackle flying this morning. Good job, you might want to protect your foot and led next time.
Wow. That hook sure did fly. I have also heard just how strong soft shackles are and now great to see a demo. I'm glad you didn't get hurt Kyle! If you got hurt, that would have rymed with Kurt and you'd have been a Numb nutz or a knuckle head or something like that:))

Cool test, but since the shackle wasn't through a swing arm like it usually would be, this introduced bending stress, which is typically the highest stress in combined loading. In a swingarm that bolt would have to shear off, which is not what happened here.

when I saw your first test setup I instantly knew that the s hook would be the first thing to go. Even if it didn't slip off it definitely would have straightened out prior to anything else going wrong. LOL
Soft shackles at PoA or carabiners is a great idea. I've seen 2 videos of carabiner failure on a glider and the results were disturbing..

It would be interesting to destruct them with some type of scale to see how much of a load they can actually handle.
Thing is no where in reality will we put that much pressure on our shackles unless God himself is jerking on your wing.
Still a good video showing us what could happen.
What was the soft shackle made from? 1/4" braided nylon? That's a tough rope to begin with but this test proved it's worth in our field of use. I keep a roll of it in my kite bag and the RV for emergencies.

@@rolloverriderpgr This is Dyneema braid. FAR stronger than nylon.
@@kyleoglee yes it is. I had a roll but it disappeared somewhere in my travels. Heck I have 2 rolls of kevlar kite string 50 & 100# and a few feet of sheathing! I had to replace 2 lines on my wing after I got it.

I use the stainless steel quick links for my reserve maybe well change over to soft,is that dyneema or kevlar ?
UHMWPE, same stuff they make dyneema and spectra out of.

I just finished my paragliding course and one of the guys who started his course in Hong Kong 2 years ago wanted his reserve repacked because it hasn't been done since, he threw it and the whole pack hit the ground unopened! It was packed wrong!! Also it had what looked like 3rd hand carabeaner with a nice scratch on the inside! So if his reserve did deploy it more than likely it would have snapped! So he would have died either way? NOT COOL!!!

Hey Kyle, I have to extend my reserve bridal so it will reach my shoulder straps, what size and brand line would you recommend,I have a couple Kevlar strap with sewn loops now but I don't trust em I sewed them myself using heavy nylon upolstery thread..thank you in advance!!!
Would need the measurements to recommend the size, but any rated climbing sling would suffice.
@@kyleoglee doesn't look any bigger than 3/8 dia it's the ozone angel square short..I need to lengthen 20" as I am mounting it on the side and not in my lap.

Yes, shackles are made from many different alloys.
this is why mercan ppg pilots have less fingers than british ppg pilots

@@goldwingerppg5953 It's not the force issue. I don't like the fact that shackles will loosen if not secured, this happened to me once. Straps are a much cleaner solution and with surprising strength. Now I'm wondering if there is any advantage to using the old metal shackles verses the cloth carabiners.
Fairbanks Air Riders I actually had a shackle fall off recently. I flew without realizing I had lost one of my shackles, but I notice my takeoff and landing was poor and flights seemed strange. Against incredible odds my flying buddy found my shackle when he landed and when I landed I told him about my issues. That’s when he showed me he had found my shackle, which help explain my issues. I’m not against rope shackles and my use them at some point, but you’re right, you have to make sure they are secured and more susceptible to failure then rope.
why not use farming equipment Pin Anchor Shackles. i have alot for my trackors at back out at home. they are bigger then my fist and i'm 6ft. i don't have small hands XL gloves (US) are like a fine skin tight fit.
