- The Chieftains recently returned from a tour of China perform a medley of tunes on The Late Late Show.
A groundbreaking tour of China, a first for any Irish traditional music group was a success for The Chieftains, and brought them to international attention. They also had the honour of being the first musical group from the West to perform on the Great Wall of China.
The Chieftains are Paddy Moloney (uilleann pipes), Derek Bell (harp), Matt Molloy (flute), Seán Keane (fiddle), Kevin Conneff (bodhrán), Martin Fay (fiddle and bones).
This episode of The Late Late Show was broadcast on 30 May 1986.
A capital force in today's importance of folk irish music. A talent to be reckoned. A soul that will outlive us. A true musician. A master. Rest in peace, Paddy Moloney... 👏👏👏👏
R.i.p Paddy. No finer musician came out of Dublin ❤️
The corrs
A true legend of Irish music. R.I.P. Paddy 🇮🇪
We’ve lost a member of our family. I have followed the Chieftains for many years and he was so very talented. We’ll miss him dearly. RIP Paddy.
R.I.P PADDY
Heaven must be having a ball!
There were very few humans on this earth I loved more than Mr. Maloney.
Suaimhneas Síoraí Air, Padraig
R.I.P...justheard it on the radio. A part of my childhood is now gone. But never forgotten.
He'll be havin' the craic up in the big session upstairs. RIP Paddy.
Finally, he can see Derek “Ding-Dong” Bell, Sean Potts, Martin Fay et al and get the craic going again.
The Uillean pipes is hands down one of the most beautiful sounding instruments. So much sweeter than and far less feedback than the bag pipes.
Ah... Paddy's gone. RIP great man.
Viva Paddy Moloney..!
R.I.P to one of our greatest musical legends. your music will live on forever Paddy.
a huge loss , the land will weep and we will say his name .
When I was growing up, my dad was a big chieftains fan and had the album they did with Van Morrison. Every Christmas we listened to the Bells of Dublin album. Some of my very earliest memories are of the sounds of Paddy's pipes. A couple years ago as I entered college, some friends and I ended up forming an Irish band and have been heavily influenced by the Chieftains. Playing their music has been a source of great joy for us. I've never found another group whose music I've felt connected to from such a depth of my soul. Nothing else resonates so deeply within my heart The sound that came out of Paddy Maloney's life has been etched in the very fibers of my being and I am forever indebted to him for his contribution to Irish music. May God bless the Maloney family. Thank you Paddy
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h'anam dílis
Essentially the Chieftains play traditional.. and not their own compositions.

Why would you wish the man rest in peace he was dedicated to music and dance. All the inhabitants of heaven will dance to his Irish music from here on in as he will be made chief of the Lords musicians. Do not lament be happy 😊
Great video of the original chieftains with the inimitable paddy front and centre. I saw them twice in the uk and once in brittany and can always feel the joy and beauty of their music
How sad., our famous piper ( Chieftan ) has died RIP. ... many thanks for bringing the music of a fading tradition to us... in fact, he helped to bring it back to life ... 🎼🎶🎶🎶 x
R.I.P Paddy, Ireland lost a legend, your legacy will live on forever
It's not often you get to hear a group where every member is recognized by everyone as a master, and probably the greatest living master, of their instrument. That's why they changed the world of Irish music, even and far more than the Clancy Brothers.
RIP Paddy 😢
My deepest simpathy to your loss. I have to experienced this .my hart goes out to you.
Hey Paddy, bring some reels and a bit of irish happiness in heaven. They sure need it...
Godspeed Paddy!
Rip paddy what a true gem you really were and so so humble.
The wise and in particular the lrish do not lament for the dead because for the soul there is neither birth nor death nor having once been does it ever cease to be it just goes to a better place and plays better music with old friends and new and they dance for ever and a day there
Rip paddy a true dublin man and a gift from God

R.i.p Paddy
Just brilliant
❤️❤️
Nice.
I remember seeing them at Snape maltings when I was as school. The two people who loved it was me and our teacher. Before he died he was part of a folk group and I am currently learning to play the melodeon so I think it was in my mind even then. I noted at the time none of my class mates enjoyed it at all. They were bored stiff.
Magic
RIP paddy 😘

They recorded an album called Fire In The Kitchen while they toured Canada one year
L-R Derek Bell, Matt Molloy, Kevin Conneff, Paddy Moloney, Sean Keane, Martin Fay. Do I have the names correct? Michael Tubridy and Sean Potts had left long before this performance.
высший класс
Does anyone know the tunes by chance?
And rest easy Paddy. Played great as always.
Paddy’s Return/Mullingar Races/Tommy Peoples’
Paddy played the pipes like no one else, le grá agus draíocht
@@johnnielson7676 A legend. Go raimh míle maith agat!
The last reel is called “The 5-mile chase”.
Paddy used the first tune as part of the soundtrack to “The ballad of the irish horse”. I’m not if he composed it himself, but it appears several times on the soundtrack, first as the main-theme, then as a jig, which they play here in this clip and finally as a reel.
@@runeulriksen Thanks for the tune name! 👍🏾
Ar dheis dé go raibh á h'anam dílis ☘❤
beannachdan iongantach bho Alba
It did so much for traditional Irish music. If anybody played the bodhran like that now in a session they would be laughed at. The uilleann pipes are not so popular anymore.
Great musician, unfortunate haircut!😁
