What? He died?! There’s no way he died.. Google says he’s 92, that’s not even that old at least almost close to 99 years ( I mean, sure some people die at the age of 92, I mean the second queen of England died at like 96)
I first saw the chieftains and James Galway in Ireland on St Patrick's day 1987,and I have been their biggest fan ever since.i at one time 35 of their lps on tape and I have many favorite tunes of theirs.but like all good things they can't last forever! Dave Howard
Heck yeah they will thanks to technology. Can you imagine all the musicians since the beginning of time that never got recorded? It truly is a golden era of humanity right now. I'm so thankful to be here in this time.
Brian Crehan Like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, music is in the ear of the listener! If you don't like it, don't listen. Judge not less you yourself be judged. Let us hear your music so we can likewise judge you!!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing The Chieftains many times on their tours to Chicago. Paddy was generally the spokesperson, giving background on the music and instruments.
Talk about shaking a leg!excellent step dance by those brothers!I saw jean Butler dance to this tune, called chattering magpie.glad to see her sister cara do this dance!wonderful musical paddy and the chieftains left our world!!this music will never die or become out style!God bless you all who hear this music and like.the chieftains awoke in me a love of my roots and love of Irish culture!!David Howard
Farewell Paddy Moloney. Slan Abhaile. Thank you ever so much for being amongst those for bringing the beauty and richness of our culture to the world, as a mixed-race person of partial Irish descent, your band's music was so influential in paving the way to my appreciation and understanding of my place amongst the Irish diaspora.Thank you, I'm deeply and forever grateful.
The song that starts at around 3:00 minutes is the Chieftains upbeat version of The Nine Points of Roguery (made popular by Boys of the Lough - but not sure if they composed it). Jon Pilatzke is the Chieftains' lead fiddle player who also comes forward to dance as the reel progresses. The other guy dancing is his brother Nathan. Both brothers are part of the Canadian band Step Crew, created by Jon and Nathan, and Cara Butler, who joins them dancing. Cara is the younger sister of Jean Butler (of Riverdance fame). Now you know 🙂.
@@WR105ProfWhen you said blond I had to take a look thinking it might be Natalie McMaster, but it isn’t her. I did see her play with The Chieftains on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno years ago. I’ve seen her in concert and she’s awesome, and it was cool seeing a Scottish style fiddler from Cape Breton playing with a great Irish band on TV!
Absolutely brilliant. These guys were amongst my favourites fifty years ago, and the music's still fresh! They had it all - pipes, fiddles, harp, bodhrán, harp - and the dancers! I've included this in a playlist "Classic British Folk" and, before anyone complains, I mean "British" in it's broadest sense, as it is to include Brittany, all the British Isles and north-western Spain. They share a musical culture from before England became England.
Sorry to be a bit pedantic, but none of those musicians have been playing together for 55 years. Paddy Moloney is the only original "Chieftain" there. That particular line up, I would think is less than 10 years old. Still making great music though.
@@tomgreene6579 Sorry, I'm not understanding you here. "Were Sean Keane and Mick Tubridy" where ? "Chieftains" first LP record was recorded in 1963, with Paddy Moloney, Michael Tubridy, Martin Fay [ fiddle ], Sean Potts [ whistle ] and David Fallon [ bodhran ], if that's what you meant.
@@douglashadden2172 You have answered my query thanks...can put a face on those fellows now. Did not know any of them , but may have met Sean Potts at Fleadh in Thurles...he was I think in the company of Vincent Broderick , but that's over 60 years ago now.
"SLANGAH" Back in the mid-1990's I was invited to one of my Co-Worker's Wedding in Malibu, Ca. Her Husband-To-Be is Irish, and he was Close Friend's of the "Chieften's" and they were invited, too. What a wounderful night we All had, "Slangah" to them All.
I always loved it when Paddy would do the vocal “chants” during a piece. I could never get over how such a strong, low sound came from a fairly diminutive man. What an amazing, gifted composer and musician. He could make those Uilleann pipes sing like a bird. If you’ve never seen the PBS Series “The Long Journey Home - The Irish in America” I highly recommend it. Some episodes are up on UA-cam. Paddy, the Chieftains and Guests (Sinead O’Connor, Elvis Costello, etc) did all the music, which is sweeping and heartbreaking. RIP Paddy, and Thank you for bringing the soul of Ireland around the world, and sharing it with all of us. 🇮🇪🇨🇦
The 2 male dancers are brothers - the Pilatzke brothers Jon and Nathan. Jon is also a fiddler. Both are championship step dancers from Canada. Love the Chieftains and the Pilatzke brothers - and all the others in this video!
Great to see Paddy Maloney still leading this band, with this new lineup. I played fiddle in a band that opened for them on a US tour in '79. I remember the grand Sean Keane, and the sweet airs of Martin Fay, the two fiddlers at that time. The Chieftains, the Boys of the Lough, and the Bothy band were the popular and influential Celtic bands at the time. Go see Paddy and others jamming with, or for, Frank Zappa, shortly before his death. The Chieftains have had a remarkable career and played with an impressive list of artists. Brilliant.
In the mid-'90's, my wife and I attended a wedding for one my Nurse's, that i supervise, in Malibu, Ca. Her husband, being Irish, was a close friend to the "Chieftains" they were invited, too and Stayed and Played, the whole night and kept us "yanks" quite happy. It was also the same night, that the "World Cup Soccer" Match, between Ireland and Mexico was played in Los Angeles and Ireland Won.
Wonderful piece, and you can see the passion in it all. But most of all I love the first guy dancing, the one with the tie. He's brilliant, really puts his all into it, flawless with it, but at the same time manages to look like every dad, ever, all rolled into one and dancing, makes me smile every time I see him!
What a grand treat to see and listen to the Chieftains. Would have loved to see them in person. Did have the great joy of seeing the step dancers in person at Brian's Celtic Sojourn. WOW!!!!!
In the lands that I came from many Chieftains have rained and ruled for thousands of years but they could not compete with the king of all Chieftans Paddy Moloney and his fellow band member Chieftains past and present and his band of fellow musicians,, dancers, singers, poets and storytellers. Paddy has now left town and is playing in a new club in a place called Kingdom Hall which is in the first town you pass through after you drive through Heaven's gate, Paddys gone but his songs, stories and music will last forevermore
Born and raised in Ashington. Sang that song most nights to my 3 kids as a lullaby, and my son has carried on the tradition with his two girls. Beautiful performance
