The common argument that the church uses against secular music is that the lyrical content is all about fornication, drugs and hedonism, which can be found in 99% of the music played on secular radio today. While if this is all that you listen to, then it goes without saying that you need to be convicted of your sin.
However, there are shades of grey. The song "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins was one of the first secular songs I heard, and it's got nothing of those that I mentioned above, instead it's a protest song about America's socio-economic issues. The song "Rise & Fall" by Craig David is about a celebrity regretting his hedonistic life. The part where he sings "Is it too late to show you the shape of my heart?" I interpret that as him asking that question to God. I believe that there's nothing wrong with these type of songs if you use lyrical discernment.

I used to make secular music as a dj/producer. Back then I played at raves and electronic music festivals. Those places are rife with drug use as that kind of music sounds incredible under the influence. I have recently walked away, now I spend my my time learning about exegesis and systematic theology. If I do step into the music game again, it will be for gospel music. The Lord is so good, he gives you a new heart with new desires and He guides your steps on the narrow path. I encourage anyone that is on the fence, complete surrender to His will is what is required.
As an artist, I also know how powerful music is too. The devil runs the entertainment industry, I was able to make people feel a certain way just by playing the right chords in certain cadences. I see it in church too, it can be deceptive as many will mistake the emotions for God’s presence when that is not the case at all. Music is amazing, just be careful. It is a powerful emotional tool and when a song or track has no emotional weak links you can get people (your listeners) to feel a certain way. This can be for good or mostly bad intentions. Always guard your heart.

I really don't have the desire to listen to any music at all anymore, except occasional old hymns that they don't play in church anymore. And I'm even picky about those. So many music groups take what used to be a beautiful hymn and they ruin it. I used to love country music, but now hearing country music almost turns my stomach. After finding out more and more how twisted the "christian" music industry has become, I can't even stand listening to most of that anymore either. I wish beyond everything that you could shop at stores or eat in a restaurant without being forced to listen to music, and they usually have the volume turned up. I look forward to heaven when we will all be singing and praising our wonderful Lord and Savior forevermore. Perfect music and harmony and it will never get old. Corey, Only one question involved here( like with everything ). Does it or my participation with it Glorify God . Simple, that's our standard that takes the guesswork out of most everything.
1st Cor. 10:31 - "whether you eat or drink or Whatever you do, Do All to the Glory of God!" When any issue is challenging for us or if we may be trying to justify something in our life, then that usually helps clarify our thoughts and make a "smart" decision. The other consideration I find helpful is to remind ourselves just how strongly the Lord feels about "the world". He hates it so and commands us not to desire those things At all. So our default position should be caution when we find ourselves wanting and enjoying those things in life that we know are not of Hm or for Him. Really, we have much freedom in Christ. We just need to remember to keep His name, His Holiness and His Glory as our proper focus. (And to also be protective of our testimony ). Amen!?!?

I remember a few years ago when it took me over 2 hours to find a show I could watch that wasn't ungodly or vulgar and the Lord just spoke to my heart saying, " You are looking for nourishment but rifling through the trash can. You won't find what you need there. But your fridge is full of wholesome food. Look to me to fill you up and I promise that I will."
I stopped watching tv then and it wasn't at all a religious sacrifice. I just trusted He was right and I have never regretted it or looked back. I read or watch a sermon or teaching or talk to my family or go to bed instead. I share my experience with others but don't preach that they must do the same.
I kinda feel the same about music. Some music is like poison that definitely hurts us, most is junk food that isn't necessarily poison but not beneficial, and a small portion is actually nourishment to our souls. I try to keep the good stuff coming into my heart and mind as much as I am able since we are slowly and unconsciously conditioned by what we watch, listen to and read.

    2) Songs that may be innocuous in and of themselves, BUT have a sinful memory association in your life also need to go.

I must confess as a believer. I just enjoy listening to 80s 70s-era music. This was the period of my childhood to teenage years.
This music just brings fond heart-warming memories.
I just slip back in time hearing certain songs.
MTV came on the scene in 80s. Soultrain in the 70$, wow! Man what interesting exciting times those were.
In the 80s, the urban radio station I grew up listening to was playing, pop: the Police, Phil Collins, Madonna, Hall & Oates.
The 80$ has some bad love ballads too: white dudes that could sing.
    Mister Mister -Broken Wings
    John Waite - Missing You
Richard Marx - Waiting For You, Endless Summer Nights...oooooweee! Those was bad numbers mane.
I can go on and on.
There was no murder, no gangster, no trap music.
I introduced my daughter to the black Elvis, Michael Jackson.
And M.C. Hammer's Pump It Up video. She was wowed.
Pull up and Listen to Madonna's song Holiday and tell me how it makes you feel?

Since I got saved, my desire for secular music has decreased. However, I recently saw New Kids On The Block in concert as they have been my favorite for 30 years. Otherwise, you can’t really avoid music because it’s all around you in stores etc. A lot of worship music is very bland. Most of the time I’m in silence or in nature. Obviously avoid any heavy metal or nasty rap or anything occult inspired.

Not too long ago I used to listen to a variety of secular music -- everything from rock/metal to country to EDM. Crazy to think I enjoyed that stuff up until this time last year, but the more I listened to it, the more God helped me realize that such music is neither edifying to me nor glorifying to Him. Even the "older" stuff that takes me back to my childhood ain't safe to listen to.
If you want something that touches up on the music industry as a whole, I recommend you guys watch "They Sold Their Souls For Rock & Roll" by Good Fight Ministries. That documentary unveils the whole of the music industry (not just rock & roll) from a Biblical perspective, and if you watch it, your eyes will be opened in ways you never thought possible.

The mainstream music industry is full of sickos. One secular genre I love is instrumental progressive house. The imagery associated with it are usually of nature: sunrises, ocean waves, polar mist etc. And when it came time to question if it was right to continue listening, I realised 'Hang on, these artists associate this music with nature - that's God's creations!' By putting those images in my head, I can thank God for creating such beautiful landscapes on this earth, because only He could have done it!

God want us to enjoy our lives, not to live in a box being scared of doing this and scared of doing that. God doesn't give us the spirit of fear! Jesus was very clear as to how He want us to live our lives and that is being obedient to His word, and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Some people have a tendency to add to the word of God of things that He never said. God strictly had warned us about the danger of adding to and taking away from His word. God created music and everything else on this earth. Music in general is not bad, it's the certain genres of music that inappropriate for Christians to listen to because of its ungodly content that it contains such as gangster rap, heavy metal, grunge etc. Personally, I don't listen to the new modern secular music because it's demonically influences and evil, unlike the old school music from the 60s-80s that was clean, when the music industry wasn't wicked and corrupted as it is now. When we are out in the public, we're going to hear secular music everywhere anyway, whether if we want to hear it or not. Christians are in the world but NOT of the world, and there is no condemnation of those who are in Christ Jesus. It seems like every time I spread the gospel, UA-cam either hide or delete my comments because of their bias opinions towards the woke.

The ultimate expression of public speaking is preaching, but it is not sinful to listen to a lecture on good lawn care. Still, some music or public speaking should be avoided if it leads to sin or error.

Apparently music is even more deceptive than we believe. I was told only recently about how someone was listening to a professing christian group singing a poppy song about dating- nothing inappropriate- just attraction to the opposite sex. The tune was catchy enough to influence them to listen to catchy poppy secular tunes which the enemy was waiting at the door for. They were then led to lust and almost destroyed their marriage and ultimately their life- just like what happened when David stayed home from a battle and walked on his balcony and saw Bethsheba. Genesis tells us the enemy is subtil. We take for granted just how subtil he is. This guy is still experiencing negative outcomes even though nothing was widely known. Apparently it granted the enemy more liberality relating to this person's career, family etc. Really makes me more selective of what i choose to listen to. No secular or CCM. Both are vehicles for the enemy. Hymns are my choice. i don't want to be deceived like he was.

Good stuff!!! Many Christians struggle with or don’t acknowledge the unrighteousness of their music choices!!!

I can't listen to secular music anymore since i became a Follower of Jesus Christ. Im 69 years old and I've been a Christian most of my adult life. When inhear music from back in the day it takes me back when i was living a godless life and I don't want to go there in my heart and mind. So I stay away from it. I loved Marvin Gaye and the music at that time. When I listen to it at a grocery store or any store for that matter it has a way of pulling me where I don't want to go. Does that make sense?

As a Christian, I listen to all music from Classical to Jazz...from Rap to Rock...from Gospel to Electronica...from Country to Blues.
I agree wholeheartedly about what we should listen to and being careful of what we listen to as well regarding music. Music does have a message, and that message can be positive or demeaning. There are some secular music that must be avoided, especially if there are numerous instances of obscenities spoken out. There is some secular music that at least delivers an inspiring vibe where you can uplift.
In the case of Gospel/Christian/Worship music, I do believe there are some inconsistencies in it, especially from mainstream Christian recording artists (i.e., Kirk Franklin, LeCrae, Tye Tribbet, Hillsong). And sometimes if you look at the music videos, you'll sometimes see some questionable things that are not Biblically moral. Keep in mind, we have to worship God in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:24). We ALSO should think on things that are true, honest, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8).
Now, I understand there are some who think it's entertainment, even I can admit that too. But as a Christian, I also think if a person has a convicting spirit, then maybe they have to be conservative of what they listen to.
