Hello everyone, MT here with the usual trainspotting action. At last and after years in making and testing, the Hitachi class 800 under the name ‘Azuma’ (Japanese for ‘East’) finally enters passenger service on the East Coast Mainline. I finally got the opportunity to have my first experience at being on one of these units. This was filmed on Wednesday 15th May 2019, the first official passenger service day for the future of East Coast travel. The unit began with the 11:03am departure from London King’s Cross before arriving into Leeds at around quarter past one in the afternoon. The first service from Leeds (the one I boarded on) was the 1:45pm departure back to King’s Cross, I went as far as Doncaster for simply having a cheap day return ticket. The unit used for this day was 800-113.
My personal impressions were great! Very stylish seating especially for them being eco-friendly, nice lighting, folding tables big enough to place your laptop on and power supply at every seat. The surround sound when going at speed was much quieter compare to the HST’s and Mark 4 sets, the only background sounds I only got to the hear much were the chatter from the other passengers on-board. The seat reservations were more clearly displayed with colour lighting to show the availability of any seat. They maintained the buffet car compared to what Hitachi did with the GWR 800’s. There is a lot more leg room meaning people like me can stretch their legs out more when needed to.
Everything that was filmed was from outside of the unit to a walkthrough from First class to standard class and ending up in my seating area. All areas in shot including the power sockets, toilets and bagging racks will give travellers a first look of what these units looks like in the inside. What I didn’t get a shot of was the buffet because it was a little crowded with members of staff standing around and not all of them would have wanted to be filmed.
The ‘Azuma’ units were originally meant to enter service at the end of last year. However, they introduction was pushed back due to them causing problems to the trackside signal equipment north of York. Hopefully, by the end of this year, they will begin passenger services to Edinburgh and beyond.
In conclusion, I’m impressed indeed with the new units. Spacious, colourful interior, quick acceleration and quiet surround sounds. I will truly be looking forward to riding these units more often. The one thing I will say as an improvement they should have done to make this almost the perfect train was having the first-class seats in leather rather than the same used in standard class then the journey would have been fruitless. But, nothing can be done now so we will have to deal with it. It will be sad to see the HST’s slowly fade out. So, it will be best for you all to have your last ride on them before they go. Feel free to comment below what your experience with the Azuma was but please keep them positive.

Thanks for the video. The train looks like the Japanese express Flesh Hitachi train on the Joban line on the north east of Tokyo. It the inside is more classic British layout of the seating arrangements. Looking forward to riding on it soon.
Wow! AZUMA!
Please keep safty and maintenance.
Beautiful Azuma! I wish my country will import this amazing beautiful Hitachi train from Japan!
Love Japan!
It was built in the UK and Japan.
in first great western they named them Hitachi trains compared to this one for LNER they called them Azuma trains

Glad to know UK bought trains from Japan!
Built in the UK with both Japanese and British tech.
LNER Finally has Japanese Trains. Nice catch
made in uk though

Went on one today. Seats a little firmer than the old style but legroom fantastic. As a 6ft person I no longer have to fear having someone sat next to me. Thumbs up from me. Shame the seat reservation indicators weren't working.
Good evening from Ukraine! Thank you very much for your fantastic video! I like it! Great work! Best wishes from me!

Dear MT Productions
Currently, in Japan, "AZUMA" generally is "east" or "eastern region",
but, the original word "吾嬬(azuma)" means "My wife".
Good-luck 👍 GOD bless everyone of UK. from Japan.
LuckyStrike I think it is 吾妻
AZUMA 東
東(AZUMA)meana east
Because this line runs
Eastern United Kingdom
Dear@@fozzybear93. Hi there! You are Great. Awesome.
You've been deep studying Japanese, right?
It is written in the 7th volume of 日本書紀(NIHON-SHOKI) as "吾嬬者耶(AZUMAHAYA)".
Its meaning is "Alas.... my wife." (≒ I miss you)
※日本書紀(NIHON-SHOKI) is the Japan's oldest history book of the dynasty officially compiled by the nation.
In add.
Currently, both [the current kanji "妻"] and [the old-style kanji "嬬"] are read as "tsuma", and also both recognized as "wife".
So, "吾嬬" and "吾妻" are considered the same thing, there is no problem.
The meaning of "つま(tsuma)" itself originally meant the spouse and there was no gender distinction.
After that, in order to distinguish men and women, "妻" or "嬬" was assigned to the female of the spouse.
※ The meaning of "吾" is "I" or "my" or "me".
However, the original source of each word is different.
"嬬" meant "weak".
Therefore, "嬬" isn't only legal-wife but also means "mistress(lover) / concubine", in China.
"妻" is "thing / person to snuggle".
Do you know that one of the Japanese dishes, 刺身(sashimi) has many long and narrow / thin-cut radish?
That cut radish is also called "tsuma". The kanji notation is also "妻".
※※Even the Japanese, there are hardly any J-people who understand the details deeply.
Thanx for your complete reading! and I'm fuckin' tired too.....LOL
Yes LNER runs mainly from Edinburgh, Newcastle, Durham, York, London Kings X. That’s the non Azuma service. The Azuma service goes by the name of the Flying Scotsman (after a steam loco ran that route) the Azuma stops at Edinburgh, Newcastle, Durham ( I believe) then missing out York onto London Kings X. Hope this helps
I first saw The "Azuma" on 23/4/19 standing in Doncaster Station. I was travelling from Hull to Sheffield via Doncaster.
Amazing video. Great train. Liked and subscribed.
OMG 😮 I can’t wait I’m so excited about trying this they look awesome 😎

Well done there 🌟🌟👍
MAY BE HITACHI IS GOING TO BIULD TRAINS IN THE U S A,TO MAKE JAPAN GREAT AGAIN ....IN THE U S A
Don't worry. Japan will export the Shinkansen for the USA.
We were able to give back to Britain who kindly taught us railway technology
What an interesting video! I really appreciated your showing us all the little details, the things that together make a rail journey what it is.
I had my first time journey on the LNER Class 800 'Azuma' on Wednesday when I was going to Peterborough.
Cosmetically looks lovely! Those seats remind me of those hard Arriva/Stagecoach bus seats, though.
イギリスの皆さんの生活の足となり、活躍してくれることを祈ります。
AzumaとAmazingって何となく似てるよね。Azuma is Amazing!!!.
wow...beautiful Train!
The Azumas will improve journey times on the ECML and LNER with more streamlined fleet hopefully reliability will increase. Will miss the HSTs and Class 91s as they are nostalgic for me, back in the late 90s and early 2000s to watch trains speed by.
Did they import Japanese time-keeping and cleaning staff as well?
Neil Charlton no! 😂
The train was built in the UK actually
@@RS-gi9hu yeah, more assembled, as with everything thing today, bits and pieces made all over the world
Thank you for a great video of a really impressive train.
Looks very impressive 😊🔝👍🚄
All very nice. We came down from Wakefield on one and I have to say that the seats are blooming uncomfortable.
I was so pleased we went back on an HST.
That's what most people using the GWR sets think too. Seats are like ironing boards, including first class.
I am a bit of a steam train enthusiast, however this looks a really good piece of kit.........Japanese build quality and reliability.
Super Azuma.. Looking like Train 18 in India.. !!
There was a pair of these sets ran through Reading West on the 8th of May. It is the first time I've ever seen an 18-coach train, but didn't get the camera out in time.
(I call them 'Montezumas')
I want you to pay attention to the internal structure.
On December 18, 2009, the Model 395 rescued passengers and passengers to rescue a damaged vehicle in the English Channel tunnel. It was an accident trapped for 16 hours.and
In 2010, the 395 type received the prestigious Japanese Prime Minister's Award in the technical category.
The 800 type (Azuma) is the safest and toughest in the EU, taking advantage of the excellent technology of the 395 type.
I love the LNER livery
It's nice that the standard class seats are red to keep with the LNER colour scheme, not the horrible grey used on the GWR units. The seats also look alot softer than than the ones passengers complained about on Great Western Railway.
Finally a real azuma enters service video.
Just goes to show how good the Metro Cammell design was back in the 90's, Hitachi have only had to followed !
Windows still sized to fit 1st class seating I see, so the pleb class gets windows in random positions relative to the seats.
塗装のデザインが面白いですね。
まるで歌舞伎の隈取りの様なデザインが、日本的ですね。
The whole network needs to be 'Japanised' - from infrastructure to management and train staff - in fact, i'd be happy for Japan to run this country - entirely !
have to agree just got back from japan used the shinkansen and tube lines no problems very very good .
azuma!🚄✨ the icon of friendship between UK and Japan😊🇬🇧🇯🇵 love from tokyo❤️
If You mean just the railway service maybe but not the country itself obviously.
The class 800 is my favourite train
日立さん良い仕事してますね!
I adore the poor people who cry in the comments about their beloved trains gone by, and how the railways have gone downhill since Brunel's Broad Gauge was abandoned. If they prefer x old and outdated stock, then they are more than welcome to have it. More seats for the rest of us. The biggest problem with railway enthusiasts is that so much of them are stuck in the past and refuse to move on. That stock has had it's day. As revolutionary as the HST and the Intercity 225 were revolutionary in their day, the railways have changed a lot since then. It's time for something else to be revolutionary, like these amazing-looking Azumas. The best way, in my opinion, is to appreciate and respect the past, but look forward to the future. As for the leather seat issue in First Class, I'm pretty sure there's a safety blanket ban of some kind on full leather seats being on new trains. I could be wrong, but I can imagine that this is the case. I am looking forward to giving these a try out on Sunday. Thank you for a very good and informative video.
Crying about old stock that has been replaced by something better is indeed not worthy, but crying about old stock that has been replaced by something worse than its predecessor is actually a just cause!
Sam Jones agreed. And these so called train enthusiasts/anoraks are mostly armchairs warriors. All they do is moan and stuck in the past, yet they never really seemed to be the one using the trains.
This new train looks looks nice and modern my only gripe is the back ground noises echoes whining ect it seemed to have the effect of being on an upgraded suburban commuter type train than a long distance intercity express.
I would like to see not only high-speed trains but also commuter train cars exported. Personally, I would like to run maroon Hankyu express trains of the 1000 or 8000 series in British cities. Hankyu trains have a luxurious feel and would fit in well in the UK.
The "facilities" (toilets) look very nice and fit for purpose. The window shade is a nice touch and a throwback to trains of old (at least on my side of the pond). All the now required "techie" stuff with outlets. But once again those seats in your new rolling stock look thin and a bit fragile. I know not everyone over in the UK is a svelte model. This is an intercity train not a commuter run. Our trains here are clunky, old, slow as molasses, but do have well padded and reasonably comfortable seats. No jokes please about the need for a comfortable seat on a ride that takes forever.
Ironing boards are for shirts not passengers.
素晴らしい!!
In the 19 th century the British helped the Japanese set up a railroad network in Japan and today the British are importing Japanese trains.
UK economy is dominated by services. They don't care about manufacturing industries.
Just the way it goes. There is nothing wrong with working together with different nations. It's normal.
This was BUILT IN THE UK by BRITISH AND JAPANESE tech. Do your research!
@Hey Man Read this thread again! Britain helped build Japan's original rail network in the 19th century and now Japan is repaying the favour with these trains!
Tsu 800 repaying? Now that's funny.
Beautiful video! 👍
Very nice looking train. Sleek shape and sleek paint job. :)
Agreed.
Now we just need them to be on time
It's about time we had trains that actually fit for purpose! We pay enough in train fares!
Congratulations from Japan!
あずまちゃん頑張って👊🤗👩
WOW ! Look at The GAP and not a single sign warning the passengers not to step into the Gap. How do they avoid all the Lawsuits ? ?
NaYawkr You just gotta be American, right?
バンザイ🙌バンザイ🙌バンザイ🙌 😁
Oh great seats that don't give a view out the window
So how does the passenger experience rate for comfort compared to a Mk4 set? I expect they are quick from experience with the Javelins but I must say I was quite shocked when I saw how paper-thin and upright the seats looked! One hopes they are not as uncomfortable over long distances as they look? Admittedly the interiors look a little better now than as delivered but its a shame LNER hasn't bothered to come up with a more flattering and individual look than the rather garish VTEC red. Hopefully a more tasteful look might be applied in the not too distant future.
2.5 hrs on one today KGX-LDS and I appreciated the legroom, but not the numb arse.
OMG. It was the British who taught the Japanese how to build rails. Hitachi engineers must be jumping for joy !
Awesome new trains can't wait to ride them on LNER so I can do a comparison video between these and the GWR ones
They are the same train the GWR 800 as the Azuma LNEW 800 trains but different colour on GWR
@@nataliekimvranjes3503 I'm fully aware of that but I was saying about doing a comparisons between GWR and LNER ones
Wow, great to see the Uk improving!
Funny?
Just to let people know the seats will become more comfortable as the get sat on more you must remember the age of the other rolling stock
@@timwattison4419 I do agree that these aren't as good as the class 43s but they will have to ware in.
, I also meant the Class 91 and Mk4's. Nothing wrong with those in any shape of form to be honest.
@@timwattison4419 shame those are being withdrawn in 2022
what has happened to springs in seat bases? The idea that seats will get more comfortble the more they are sat on is not really good enough. They need to be comfortable from the word go.

I wonder if this will be the one they'll choose for the Houston to Dallas bullet train.
IF - and I mean "IF" - The Houston-Dallas train ever gets built - it's a long-shot at best. You have to keep in mind that the people wanting to build it are facing the fiercest of opposition from people in Texas who are fighting it tooth and nail. It is anybody's guess when and/or if the would-be builders of this line get the final permission and funding necessary to construct it. Those opposed to it are hoping they can "run out the clock" to the point where the Bullet Train Consortium finally lose their patience and throw in the towel, pack their bags and head back to Japan. The United States of America may be the LAST place on Earth to get true high speed trains, if it ever gets any at all. I've never seen a country more downright hostile to trains of any kind than the U.S. Our President, Donald Trump, wants the few transcontinental and regional trains operated by Amtrak shut down. The United States is, to say the least, NOT a good environment in which to propose building a bullet train.
@@erictalbot4584 That's right It will take for ever I saw all on the news here in Houston.
Proud on India's ICF for rolling out Vande Bharat Express. It's not just 3 times cheaper than Hitachi AT300 but equally superb.
while train 18 is good improvement, since it is 3 time cheaper, it also looks cheap and not well finished. not everything of quality can come with low cost
Well the dunnie looked good nuff said.

Great video!
I live in Japan. In this video, I was glad to see a wonderful view of the suburbs of England. I am grateful to Britain for adopting the product made in Japan in the birthplace of the railway.
But there is one thing I'm curious about. Do people line up at home? Is it happening?
In Japan, wherever you go, it is natural to line up, and I think it is the best way to get on and off efficiently.
I travelled up to Leeds yesterday in standard class.I found the seats far too narrow and I am not a big chap. Why is room always at such a premium ?
Great video showing the actuality of the much heralded Azuma trains on LNER. There's much to praise (leg room, power and USB sockets) but I have concerns also.
The digital signage is opaque at best:
What does the large "L" at 1:56 mean? (carriage number? If yes, why not say so?).
What does the "13:45 Wakefield Westgate" mean? Next station? Current time? Arrival time? If yes, just say so.
What do the seat signs mean? At 5:13 what do "current" and "next" mean - reserved or free? If I'm correct, why not say so; it would be easier to understand for punters like me and foreign visitors too.
Finally, the dreadful electronic loos. When will railway companies learn that passengers HATE these?
In summary, the technical innovations are to be applauded but LNER has lost sight of keeping the customer clearly informed and that's a pity; it wasn't that hard to get right.
個人的にはGWRの方がいいかな。
でもAZUMAの名で走ってくれるのが嬉しい。
Best Japanese technology!
良いな、乗ってみたいね AZUMA
Looks nicer, but the GWR and tp express livery suits it better
Haven't seen a TPE 800 yet but the livery on the new Novas is great...
As for GWR that is the best single shade livery I've seen - any of their stock looks great in that shade of green...

Seats are unbelievably uncomfortable especially fora longer journey. Progress? I don’t think so!
The lack of cushioning is due to the Dept of Transport regs on fire retardance in seating. So bring a cushion.
@@Chrish23 Would rather use the car, at least the DfT do not currently in have a say in how uncomfortable a seat must be in a private motor vehicle. The seats are a disgrace in these trains for anything more than 1 hour.
It was specially made for that people that don't respect anything. Better you bring your own cushion anyway.
very good detailed video.
the way the automatic voice announcment says Doncaster as Doncastar and Peterborough as Peterbarahhh it's so fascinating!!!!
rescuelad4 get a life mate
Where were these made please?
Not a word about that?
V pleased to have high quality trains. Excellent!!
But these should be built in UK.
Why has so much of our manufacturing capacity been exported??????
Hitachi have a manufacturing plant in UK, I believe one carriage/unit was manufactured in Japan, then the rest in the UK facility.
However all the parts are likely to come from across the globe as that's how it works today.
I wonder with the much improved acceleration available with these units, could they add a stop at Finsbury Park on some services, to enable quicker connections from areas such as Canonbury, Moorgate, Bank and The City/Financial district, and neighbourghoods like Seven Sisters and Tottenham?
Looking forward to riding this locomotive. The frontend painting needs to be streamline. 頭でっかちに見える。
Was nice to see interior wasn’t as boring as gwr but glad I only did Leeds to Wakefield on those seats
They look and sound like the 395s running up and down HS1 which isn’t surprising. Are these going to be able to run at 140mph as well?
