  • Join me for a walk around the fascinating town of Falkirk, located in the heart of Scotland's Central Belt, and home to riveting heritage on every corner! The original home of Irn-Bru, once the site of the Roman Antonine Wall and the place where two iconic historic battles occurred, Falkirk is an enthralling place to explore!
On our walk around Falkirk, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Falkirk Steeple, Market Place, Falkirk Trinity Old Parish Church, the tomb of Sir John de Graeme, High Street, the old Sheriff Courthouse Buildings, Boer War Memorial, the site of the old Town Hall, St. Andrew's West Church, the statue of the Duke of Wellington, Falkirk Old Grammar School, The Carron Works Pub (formerly Bank Street Picture House), Woo'er Street, Tolbooth Street, the Tolbooth Tavern, King's Court, Pleasance, site of Falkirk Roman Fort and Antonine Wall, the Tattie Kirk, Cow Wynd, Callendar Square, the old Cross Keys pub, and the Callendar Arms.
A special thank you to Janice and the team at Falkirk Delivers for their help when I was in Falkirk!

Good evening, and welcome to this walk around Falkirk, a fascinating Scottish town that's both full of riveting local heritage, and has numerous connections to some of the biggest moments in Scottish history.
But another word on Irn-Bru, which originates in Falkirk. When the Falkirk operations merged with the production in Glasgow, the name of their drink became 'Iron Brew'. Now, despite the legacy of iron foundries in Falkirk, there was no iron in Iron Brew, and nor was the drink actually brewed. As a result, in 1946, the makers of the drink had to change its name in line with new laws, christening it 'Irn-Bru', the drink so popular across Scotland today.

I went to Falkirk a few times back in the late 80's, visiting local friends who now live in Edinburgh and abroad. I was a French teenager back then, who'd fallen in love with Scotland and would later explore the stunning Highlands and Islands, as well as other parts of the country. I have one particular strong memory of Falkirk, when, on december 31st 1989, my Scottish friends and i joined the local crowds at the foot of the steeple for the stroke of midnight, in the bone-chilling Winter drizzle, thus entering the 1990's.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

My town. It has really fallen on hard times, and the town centre has pretty much moved down to the retail park, but I genuinely believe one day it will shine again. Very informative video.

20 metres from where you ended the video is a Heritage plaque.
    It reads:
In 1934 a hoard of almost 2000 silver Roman coins was discovered by workmen on the site now occupied by B&M store. The coins were found in a clay vessel, together with a piece of cloth. The cloth was woven in a checked pattern using two colours of natural wool, one dark brown and one a paler cream, and is widely believed to be the earliest example of tartan yet identified. The coins cover the reigns of several Emperors, the latest being dated 230 AD, and were perhaps part of a payment to local tribes to encourage them to keep the peace.
Nice way to commemorate the past by laying tarmac and building a business over the site.

    Another brilliant informative walk.
Falkirk is a place we have visited twice but never been into the town centre so found it especially interesting.
We first saw the Kelpies in 2014 driving up the M8 in a rain storm.
In 2015 we decided on the way to Strathpeffer for a holiday to split the seven and a half hour drive by stopping overnight at the Falkirk Travelodge, we visited the Kelpies when they were still building the shops and went on to the Falkirk Wheel which was shut as it was then evening.
In 2017 we were on holiday in Arrochar and drove over to Falkirk again, we booked a trip on the Wheel and afterwards had a good look around the Kelpies, the rain didn’t help but the wheel was a great experience.
We have a great photo of a couple of workers in a cherry picker working on one of the Kelpies faces that puts their height into perspective.

This video is poignantly nostalgic. I tromped over to Falkirk in '90, as a mission intern in my final semester @ the Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, OK. Stayed at the church office in 3A Booth Place, and performed street evangelism during the week days. Having approached hundreds, the Lord enabled me to lead ninety souls to Him. That was exhilarating. Priceless. The video is reinvigorating and nourishing to my soul. Thanks much and GBY.
