Sonny Moore consoles made them break it up into separate areas. it was originally going to be one large strip. if consoles hadn't existed they wouldn't have had to spend all their time making it the one way. when you only have a short period to work on something you cant make multiple versions, you can thank consoles for the ,memory limitations on the game engine that prevent good mods for it
Little did they know, years later this would still hold up as a cult classic masterpiece. An open-world RPG with amazing writing, that few studios have topped. On top of having such a short development time. Mad respect for Obsidian.
The Obsidian/Troika/Black Isle devs seem to be amazing at making cult classics. Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky were joking in one of their interviews that most of their games sell horribly on release but overtime developed a cult following (Fallout 1/2, Arcanum, Vampire Bloodlines etc). They had to change a number of dev studios over time, because most went bankrupt due to their amazing ability to make cult classics lol

It's a shame that Bethesda were really harsh on obsidian. They have them a certain time and budget, not to mention the pressure they got. The game was gonna be bigger and have more quest, NPC's and a less empty map, but Bethesda couldn't allow that due to time. Also Bethesda told obsidian that if the game got a higher rating then 75 they would pain a bonus. But sadly the game got....74 because of glitches (that were patched later on). Obsidian did a great job, shame that Bethesda had to fuck with them.
The irony is, is that New Vegas was so much more better than 3. It's a massive shame Obsidian didn't make Fallout 4. Imagine these guys with 5+ years of development?
They didn't, "fuck with them," they couldn't predict that they would make a game that would make most of the fandom ignore the superior Fallout 2. They where letting a diffrent company make a game for the franchise and wanted a good image for it. Not to mention the probably wanted them to finish it quickly so they could start on a new game. These days people disregarde Bethesda as a terrible company. But bringing mods to consoles? Making skyrim? Those are amazing things that, of course, no other company has done.
I really don't understand how putting fallout and amazing in the same sentence makes, "no sense." My problem is how people keep on attacking bethesda. In your opinion Skyrim may be bad but to others it's a good game, same for FO4. Although I do agree that yes, they didn't exactly add much RPG. Bethesda is still well known for making hugely successful games that are amazing in my opinion.
He actually likes fallout 3 gameplay wise it’s the story he hated they just wanted to make it back into more of a roleplay game don’t get me wrong I love nv but fallout 3 is also great it has its problems but it holds its own I think people overthink the smirk dude gave the game its props he just thought he could do better and he did but he never said he hates fallout 3 and has given it props before
Because they own the IP, and at this point enough people have pestered them about it that you're basically guaranteeing no third party ever touches the franchise ever again. Also, most of the team behind New Vegas doesn't work at Obsidian anymore.
My favorite game ever. No other game comes close in terms of combining the best of open ended quests, huge freeroam map, good effects, varied voices, great plot, the ability to mold any character you want, a real "good guy/bad guy" system where what decision you make actually makes a difference, so much more. Along with the awesome hardcore system, in which you actually have to eat, drink, sleep, and makes the realism better which only makes the game more fun.
aylamaiia Is Fallout 3 better than New Vegas to you? The effects, yes, and perhaps a lot of the environments were better put together, but on the whole I can't honestly see how 3 is better than NV, given the items it contains that I mentioned there.
steve smithson Where the hell is this whole "Bethesda refuses to acknowledge New Vegas" thing coming from? I see it everywhere with absolutely no explanation or context.
@@ShadowtheHedgehog105 the evidence is in how a lot of the improvements made in New Vegas to make the newer fallout games be true RPGs is ignored by Bethesda's. NV brought back skill checks in dialogue and also brought back player choice and introduced a well done reputation system. I don't know about you but I don't see to much of those things in Fallout 4 do you?
I like it how people suffer in new vegas / 3 : there are kids chasing mutated rats to get food for example, you don´t see that in fallout 4. People in the boston area live too easy and it makes me forget the nuclear devastation.
I swear people say anything about Fallout 4, there's alot of settlements out there with people suffering from raider and super mutants attacks, the whole Minuteman faction is dedicated to stop people's suffering so idk how you say that's not seen in Fallout 4 when one of the biggest most pushed factions in Fallout 4 deals with suffering people.
YungHandz706 I didn´t care to do minuteman quests so I didn´t know the their story. In other fallouts suffering is a part of the surroundings, the little things not whole questline.
P4nzerk93 Certain parts were hit harder with the bombs and some weren't hit as hard, alot of people joke about Preston Garvey constantly bringing up people who need help so idk how you haven't heard or seen about those minutemen quests. Suffering is part of Fallout 4 and there's many settlements scattered around who barely can protect themselves or their food from raiders and super mutants plus synth attacks terrorize the wastelands. The kids chasing mutated rats only happened in 1 place which was Freeside, it wasn't a frequent thing in Fallout.
I truly hope the developers at obsidian know that today, in 2024, i re-visited new vegas and it stands the test of time that fallout 4 couldnt even stand a week to. The passion, the innovation and the honest art that has been put into this game is far beyond 90% of games made in this age. The developers at obsidian truly deserve a round of applause!👏
It's not a competition. Both games can exist. If you notice in the documentary the devs are constantly saying how much they love fallout 3. Let's not forget big part of the reason they could make new vegas in a year was due to bethesda's great development tools, even if you prefer new vegas' story, much of the underlying gameplay was made by bethesda.
If any dev happens to come back to this video - I’m playing the game for the first time right now, first fallout game for me and it’s already a top 10 game personally. I’m trying to do all the quests before I push the main story to the end, bought all DLC and looking up as little as possible. Went in blind and loving exploring, trying different solutions and the dialogue is great. So funny and the little plot twists here and there are also fantastic! Thank you for making this game!
I've played both Fallout 3 and NV extensively, I gotta say the thing I like more about NV is everything about the combat and unique amount of guns, from simple things like just being able to aim down iron sights, to all the unique different revolvers and mods
Just read an interview with josh just published (4/23/24) There was some about new vegas. About how he thinks the game became so loved because the faction stuff you can twist and turn and make your own way. Plus, you dont have to kill anyone, but you can kill EVERYONE if you want. And that's exactly it. The choice and letting us just live in the game, and it reacts as it should. So good. So so good.
ikr Bethesda takes way to much fuckin credit for being half ass obsidian made them they made Skyrim elder scrolls 5 and the best of fallout and tbh Bethesda ain't shit without them we saw this when fallout 4 came out basically they are just living off of obsidian's fame and hard work.
+Kc Mcclary if you love obsidian than that's fine cauz i love them too but to say shit about bethesda that didn't happen then it's not okay yes obsidian made new vegas that was great , if you think it's the best game than it's your opinion and i respect it even though i don't agree . but obsidian never touched anything about skyrim that was in my opinion better than new vegas , so i don't understand how are they living off obsidian's work
UnknownPenguin Yeah, i can see what you mean. But they focused way too much on radiant quests in fallout 4. One of the few factions, the minutemen, were basically only just radiant quests. And the other factions were so intertwined with the main quest that you could hardly do any quests before getting close to the ending.
UnknownPenguin we were, but i didn't understand which part of fallout 4 was no different than fallout nv. Because in the comment you responded to i didn't mention NV. me: "fallout 4 was too much about radiant quests" you: "fallout 4 was the same way." huh?
Fallout should go back to it's roots man. These guys did as much they could and is what bethesta should do. I played the hell out of the original FO1 and 2 back in the day and i saw almost nothing from the original games in FO3 but in FONV it was plenty they even used music from 1 and/or 2 in NV and i was thrilled to hear it while i played. Plus they brought back the narrator how awesome is that?!
It is so cool to see the people responsible for one of my favorite games of all time. Cool to see the voice actors, even if I only recognize a few. It is so cool to see the person and think "this is the one that made that amazing character come to life."
Am I the only one that sees the irony of fighting over whether Fallout 3 or Fallout NV is better. Humans cant resist fighting others when they have different interest or different likes and dislikes, no matter what subject it is, people will fight whether its now or after the apocalypse. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything from God, to justice, to simple psychotic rage. War. War never changes...
I don't really see how it's ironic. The fighting after the apocalypse is actual murder and genocide due to dogmatic and ideological conflict between nation states. The "fighting" about which game is better is nothing but verbal debate about what people think makes a good role playing game, or a good Fallout game. I don't think they're very similar at all.
Guillaume P. The point is that people will disagree whenever possible at all levels no matter how simple. Conflict is core in human nature. In our world it is not feasible to kill someone over something simple but in early human history and perhaps the apocalypse, killing someone would require much less merit. History shows that people get killed and start wars when they don't share opinions.
Right, but no one is starting a war or killing anyone over Fallout, they're just having debates online so it's not really that "ironic," in my opinion.
i wonder if they knew while developing, that this game would go down in history as one of the best, and that over a decade after it released it would still have a cult following.
“We’re going to show you War is necessary” *Shows Courier fighting Great Khans* Even the Devs admit the Khans are just a fancier raider gang that threw a hissy fight when the NCR has the balls to fight back.
It's honestly like Bethesda took notes on what made F3 & New Vegas so good and so fun, and then went "well, that's already been done so let's not do that"
It makes him look like a seedy, old businessman. Which isn't necessarily wrong but it seems overtly sordid. The one in the game is perfect - cold, calculating, confident.

That Dam Wizard
CeafyIsHere The number was 85, not 75.
Matthew Perry isn't just some moron who just plays video games.
he did put it out there
Huh.
He's a moron who voice acts for video games too. :)
+Evil Gary He's that cringy idiot that gets annoying after 3 episodes.
he jump-started the westernization of Japan, you guys!! :D
21:22 the famous JE Sawyer smirk that told original Fallout fans what he really thought of Fallout 3, and that the series was back in good hands.
What a savage
He actually likes fallout 3 gameplay wise it’s the story he hated they just wanted to make it back into more of a roleplay game don’t get me wrong I love nv but fallout 3 is also great it has its problems but it holds its own I think people overthink the smirk dude gave the game its props he just thought he could do better and he did but he never said he hates fallout 3 and has given it props before
@@Two.Face4 fallout 3 is so boring, if it had a good story and weapon choices like NV. Then it would be top tier
Fuckin love Josh lmao
One of the most memorable open worlds ever made in my opinion.
Hopefully Obsidian is working on a new Fallout game
+Gindisi Why does everyone like Fallout New Vegas more than Fallout 3? Note i have played and beat both games.
***** I don't mind not having Hardcore Mode, bullet types, and gun mods but i do see how people could like Vegas more. Thanks!
***** I feel like that helps Fallout 3s story actually be a story.
***** I enjoyed the game more. It's just my opinion.
+Robo Frosty Your opinion is wrong and stupid.
Why Couldn't Obsidian make fallout 4.
Because they own the IP, and at this point enough people have pestered them about it that you're basically guaranteeing no third party ever touches the franchise ever again. Also, most of the team behind New Vegas doesn't work at Obsidian anymore.
Chris Avellone left Obsidian, can they make a better game then New Vegas was without him?
They lost Chris, true, but they also picked up Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain, the creators of Fallout.
LiquidDIO Hotline Fallout tbh
As an addendum, I'm sure Chris would contract out to them for a Fallout game anyway.
30:45 Mocking Todd Howard, geniuses
So happy they changed the Mr. House monitor image lol
Fallout 3, I don't think I need to say more.
aylamaiia Is Fallout 3 better than New Vegas to you? The effects, yes, and perhaps a lot of the environments were better put together, but on the whole I can't honestly see how 3 is better than NV, given the items it contains that I mentioned there.
Jaron Talotta It was more immersive, although I didn't have a massive effect on the world. It was still nice to have much more immersion.
aylamaiia what? Nobody in F3 had farms or acted in a reasonable way. Everyone was either I AM AN ANGEL or I WILL NUKE EVERYTHING AGAIN!!!!
@@aylamaiia emersion is not enough
Shame Bethesda refuses to acknowledge this fantastic improvement
steve smithson Where the hell is this whole "Bethesda refuses to acknowledge New Vegas" thing coming from? I see it everywhere with absolutely no explanation or context.
Droideka 3X Fallout Shelter has no content from NV, no legendary vault dwellers. I would love to have a NCR Ranger armour for my dwellers.
Droideka 3X the fact that they didn't pay Obsidian for the missing 1 point on the metacritic score.
@@majik5194 Too true. If New Vegas is an ocean of immersion, than 4 is naught but a puddle.
I like it how people suffer in new vegas / 3 : there are kids chasing mutated rats to get food for example, you don´t see that in fallout 4. People in the boston area live too easy and it makes me forget the nuclear devastation.
i thought that the 'hopeless wasteland' theme wasn't what they were going for?
Rolling Stoned I don´t know what bethesda tried to achieve by making fallout 4 so diffirent.
P4nzerk93
Certain parts were hit harder with the bombs and some weren't hit as hard, alot of people joke about Preston Garvey constantly bringing up people who need help so idk how you haven't heard or seen about those minutemen quests.
Obsidian NEEDS to make the next fallout game
Best game ever, still playing it today
happy 10 years to this masterpiece
In my opinion, New Vegas had a way better story compared to Fallout 3
Yeah , and the factions and the wasteland and just perfect
+IrishBartx In my opinion, New Orleans had a way better story and gameplay dynamics to Fallout 4
Personally I think the new Vegas story was awful compared to fallout 3.
+IrishBartx true, i loved the plot twists
There are tons of games that have a better story than Fallout 3
Its amaing how perfect the voicing is in this game. They got sm iconic voices that suited the characters so incredibly well.
the voice acting is a major reason this game is so much better to me
You can tell this game was made with so much love and thought. I just admire it so much. Thank you Obsidian 🙏🏻
I always really appreciate it when long time veteran actors actually take video game voice acting seriously.
We need Obsidian for a new real RPG-Fallout after Fallout 4.....
yep , we need obsidian
+Connor T fo4 is the failed abortion of FNW and Fo3, they either dumbed down or removed everything that made the series compelling and worthwile
Its ridiculous disappointment lol.
Outer Worlds
Nah.
Bethesda could not stand a chance. This game has soul to the brim
@@deantjewieyeah the gameplay itself is just elder scrolls w guns lol
if only fallout 4 had this level of depth
God I hate Fallout 4. It's such a huge step back.
+Ast vom Baum Step forward it's amazing
+Ast vom Baum Most people love it...
Connor T It's still shit. Play the prequels and compare them to F4 and you'll see.
Connor T 2 steps toward and 1 step back
If any dev happens to come back to this video - I’m playing the game for the first time right now, first fallout game for me and it’s already a top 10 game personally. I’m trying to do all the quests before I push the main story to the end, bought all DLC and looking up as little as possible. Went in blind and loving exploring, trying different solutions and the dialogue is great. So funny and the little plot twists here and there are also fantastic! Thank you for making this game!
Play 1 and 2 to see how and where it all started from go and get that geck for your village
I really wish they remaster this one next
7:32 RIP Mathew Perry.
28:15.
"And in Fallout 3..."
Well played m8.
I never noticed that, but good to know that even the devs knew they were creating the true sequel to Fallout 2.
Pascal fallout 3 was never meant to be a true sequel, it was made to bring back the series after it had died years before
Skinny Mulligan And they fucked it up.
Can’t wait until this comes out.
I've played both Fallout 3 and NV extensively, I gotta say the thing I like more about NV is everything about the combat and unique amount of guns, from simple things like just being able to aim down iron sights, to all the unique different revolvers and mods
Very true. New Vegas defiantly improved the combat from Fallout 3
Just read an interview with josh just published (4/23/24)
There was some about new vegas. About how he thinks the game became so loved because the faction stuff you can twist and turn and make your own way. Plus, you dont have to kill anyone, but you can kill EVERYONE if you want.
And that's exactly it. The choice and letting us just live in the game, and it reacts as it should. So good. So so good.
If the World ends and it's like New Vegas, I'll be happy :)
+McBlemmen lol

The smirk after the statement he makes at 21:22 just fills me with joy.
and I want obsidian to do fallout 5
and 6 and 7 and 8 and 9 and 10 aaaaaaand...........
ikr Bethesda takes way to much fuckin credit for being half ass obsidian made them they made Skyrim elder scrolls 5 and the best of fallout and tbh Bethesda ain't shit without them we saw this when fallout 4 came out basically they are just living off of obsidian's fame and hard work.
+Kc Mcclary if you love obsidian than that's fine cauz i love them too but to say shit about bethesda that didn't happen then it's not okay
yes obsidian made new vegas that was great , if you think it's the best game than it's your opinion and i respect it even though i don't agree . but obsidian never touched anything about skyrim that was in my opinion better than new vegas , so i don't understand how are they living off obsidian's work
Kc Mcclary ... did you just say Obsidian made Skyrim?....
Kc Mcclary Your a fucking idiot
they said the strip was gonna be huge.
now where the fuck is it
Cadetri Gaming probably on the Fallout Nexus somewhere
Cadetri Gaming Console limitations bud, console limitations.
I know for a fact that there is a mod that makes freeside larger and less pointless
TightlyJohnF no, not that. it was just poorly designed. they had enough room to make freeside part of the strip. dont know why they didnt
Cadetri Gaming It was cut in production because of console limitations.
Best game ever....no doubt. The game made me feel like I belong in the Mojave :)
Being from the area, they did a really good job. Hwy 95 was like the main road through my hometown and it's in the game!

So did I at first, but after a while, patrolling the Mojave made me wish for a nuclear winter.

Imagine if New Vegas was developed for five or six years and not 1,5
Fallout 4 had a serious lack of factions. NV got it right.
colebowlin68 They were so few though.
UnknownPenguin I quite enjoyed the factions in NV.
UnknownPenguin I don't follow. I was talking just now about fallout 4, so what did you mean with "fallout 4 is not different"?
UnknownPenguin we were, but i didn't understand which part of fallout 4 was no different than fallout nv. Because in the comment you responded to i didn't mention NV.
me: "fallout 4 was too much about radiant quests"
you: "fallout 4 was the same way."
huh?
21:22 I just love that smirk. He knows. He just knows.
3 had the narrator
Over 1000 hours in NV and watched this 5 times now. Going back to watch number 6!
You are a genius
+SongBird
1:11 "Sometimes, we are going show why war is absolutely necessary."
Really shows how much work and thought was put into New Vegas. Fantastic game
Came back to here just to celebrate obsidian making one of the best follow ups to fallout 2 happy 10 years to fallout new Vegas
i wonder if they knew while developing, that this game would go down in history as one of the best, and that over a decade after it released it would still have a cult following.
Its funny how NV has a better rpg vision of the series instead of FO4.
Really gotta give it to the writers... No game before or after this one comes close to how solid the writing is
Dude, i never realized just how STACKED the voice cast was!
Holy crap, never realized how many famous people did voice overs in this game!
"The environment is really reacting to what you do"
TRUE
“We’re going to show you War is necessary”
*Shows Courier fighting Great Khans*
Even the Devs admit the Khans are just a fancier raider gang that threw a hissy fight when the NCR has the balls to fight back.
It's honestly like Bethesda took notes on what made F3 & New Vegas so good and so fun, and then went "well, that's already been done so let's not do that"
And House said when making the Strip "We need to build a wall and make the NCR pay for it"
best fallout game ever
If just i could give you guys a number of times i played this amazing video...over and over and over again..still in 2021
"We think of it as a side story" a side story that's more in depth than the standard one
It also continues the story of Fallout 1 and 2 than Fallout 3 and 4 did.
I was watching this earlier today, then it was announced that Matthew Perry(voice of Benny) has passed away today. :(
This game was incredible, the amount of love and thought that went into it was mind bogging, so many choices and endings to choose from.
RIP Mathew Perry fr
2:43 I am so glad that this wasn't the final face for Mr. House. Creepy.
It makes him look like a seedy, old businessman. Which isn't necessarily wrong but it seems overtly sordid. The one in the game is perfect - cold, calculating, confident.
