  • Iron deficiency is the most prevalent single deficiency state on a worldwide basis.
    It is defined as a decreased total body iron content.
    Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the iron deficiency is severe enough to diminish the red blood cell production.
    So, in this video I discuss about following topics;
    1. Normal iron physiology in a healthy individual
    2. Causes & pathophysiology of IDA
    3. Clinical presentation (signs & symptoms) of IDA
    4. Diagnosis of IDA
    5. Treatment of IDA
    I would highly recommend you to watch this video till the end, and you may gain a lot of information on iron deficiency anemia.

    To all the students who watch Med Today videos;
    Do not rely on videos for in depth details on a certain topic. Use the videos as a guide to understand the basic picture & concept behind that particular topic. Always read textbooks to improve your knowledge. And gather information from reliable web sites like "Medscape", "Pubmed", And "CDC". Find the latest guidelines & articles published by healthcare experts, and study them. Good luck, Future doctors!

      Yes. I'm also using Robbins when I'm making videos. And I also use "Kumara and Clark's Clinical Medicine" textbook for the diagnosis and management part.

    I collapsed last Thursday I was rushed to hospital. My heamoglobin level was 70! A normal level for male is 130-160. I had a blood transfusion and iron transfusion. It turns out I had an ulcer in my duodenum that was bleeding hence why I was so anemic. I spent 5 days in hospital. Had an endoscopy and now I'm on iron tablets for the next 6 months.

      I hope you're doing well now.
      And what did the physicians do about the duodenum bleeding? Because I'm taking iron but after few months I'm anemic once again, plus scared of the procedure.

    Can IDA cause swollen body?? Like edema, periorbital swelling

    • @medtoday
      @medtoday  2 роки тому

      Not really. But if you have a condition like liver disease, both anemia and edema can occur. Because liver is the place where proteins like albumin are produced. But here the anemia is due to reduced hemoglobin synthesis, rather than iron deficiency. Hope you got the point.
