It's not selfish knitting, it's DIY clothing! As an old, childless cat lady, I've found that most people are so accustomed to store-bought garments that loving handmade things seem sad and inferior. My husband was skeptical at first, but eventually bragged about the flannel shirts and jackets and hiking socks I made him. (He was exceptional in many ways.) You were wise to teach your young children about DIY clothing. (I learned from my mom early on.)
