How to revive a dead Dewalt battery that is not charging

  • A procedure to revive a Dewalt battery which I have used successfully.
    It may work for you credit goes to Matthew Peech whose channel I saw it on.
    How to revive DEWALT Lithium battery?
    Not Charging? If jump-start won't work? try manual reset. I will show you how I fix or revive my DEWALT Lithium battery that doesn't charge. If Kick-start or jump-start doesn't work you can try another method. Reset the CID ( current interrupt device). This event can happen to your battery if there is excessive cell pressure,high temperature or high voltage while using your power tool. If this method still don't revive your battery, it might need parts replacement. This is just my experience I want to share, I learned this from other people who shared same information about this matter.
    just be careful when working with a battery like this.
    The procedure effectively jump starts a battery with depleted cells if the cells are bad it won't work.
    If a battery gets drained to a certain low point it can no longer be charged. This is the reason your dewalt battery won't charge. A small power donation corrects this.
    Dewalt battery not working?
    Dewalt battery not taking charge?
    Dewalt battery not holding charge?
    Can a dewalt battery be repaired?
    this video may help
    This will work on Dewalt Xr 18v and Dewalt 20v max batteries a surprisingly high percentage of the time.

    Thanks. It worked perfectly for a 12v battery that I hadn't used in a few years.

    Great video to help folks out! The same technique works with dead 12v automotive / motorcycle batteries and newer "smart" chargers. You need to get a small amount of juice in the dead battery for the charger to recognize it as viable, and then it will charge, so long as there is not a shorted cell or other internal issues.

    Similar technique works in dead cell phones. Won't charge via USB or surge protector? Directly plug in with an adapter to a wall socket. Sometimes they need a higher current to push the dead zone. I don't know why. But it works

    Hey man!! Well I just tried this & geez it worked perfectly. I have several Dewalt batteries (I'm a drywall contractor in SoCal) & the ones that didn't work I wrote a ? on so I could tell them apart from ones that worked. So far they all work now thanks to your help. Much appreciated.

    Thank you so much, I left one of my 8ah batteries in my fan overnight and the next day when I tried to charge it the charger showed it to be defective. I was already shopping for a new one but I figured there had to be a way to get it to charge because this is one of my newest batteries. I tried this for a minute and the battery showed one bar so I stuck it on the charger and it charged right up. Again, thank you for saving me $150 for a new battery 👍

    This trick works! I bought a (Chinese knockoff) 18v to 20v adapter so I could use my old 18v Dewalt drills and the adapter flattened the 20v battery to nothing. If put on the charger, the flat battery did nothing. I used this trick and the battery started charging again.

    THIS WORKED!!!! I had to wire 2 12v batteries in parallel to revive the 20v but now I have the red blinking light!!!
    P.S. yes I shocked myself in the process but not too bad.

    Invest in a bench power supply mate, you can limit the current going in to the battery to a sensible amount, whereas jump starting will dump all of the current of the good battery into the duff one totally uncontrolled - other than watching it with your eyes! I normally start at 1A and then up to 2-4A then if all ok leave it be to take it up to 17V ish then onto the charger and see what happens. If charger wont do it then theres gauranteed one dead cell at least. If you get a cell failed in short circuit which happens occasionally (even though it shouldnt) they get really hot really quick trying to jump them. I've got a Flexvolt in for repair that had caught fire from what looks like a shorted cell. A bench power supply wont send any current in across a dead short. Most of the time this trick is good for the general DIYer but I think you're a step on from that!

    Thank you Doctor Left, I have 2 Dewalt 20V batteries that have been dead for over a year. I took one apart and measured the voltage on each battery and all 5 were about 1/2 a volt, 3.2 volts total instead of 20V. I used solid copper 14 gauge wire, stripped a half inch off each end and hammered the ends flat so they would slide into the good and bad battery terminals. I let them sit for 45 seconds, the wires did not heat up. Before I did this the battery charger light wouldn't even come on, after I did the wake-up call, the charger started charging my first battery. It's charged up to 20.4 V and runs my multi tool. Hip hip hooray. December 2022

    Left a pack on a cheap aftermarket usb adapter and forgot about it for a week, would not take a charge. Tried your method, wire got pretty warm so I only left it hooked for about 20 seconds. Put dead pack on charger and it started charging straight away where previously the charger didn’t even act like it had a battery on it! Thanks!🎉

    This technique does work and is usually worth trying. However, DeWalt Chargers are programmed not to charge these batteries for a very good reason. Over-discharged li-ion cells are permanently damaged - injecting unlimited current from a fully charged 21V pack to a fully dead 2V pack can turn into a very angry thermal event. I would highly advise using your smallest pack at less than 50% capacity to boost any other pack's voltage. You only need to bring the voltage up to about 15.3V in order for the charger to recognize it, so use a multimeter if at all possible and be ready to pull the packs apart at the first sensation of heat.

    • @doctorlefthandthread

      I agree with your full comment this video must be 2 years old if using this method now I always monitor the voltage at the same time to not overcook it

      @@doctorlefthandthread nice! Yeah in no way am I critiquing the video. I just thought that info could be useful to someone. Fundamentally, the way you did it is likely the safest way to boost the voltage without buying dedicated charging gear.

    I purchased some transparent speaker wire. Do I use the copper for positive and the nickel or "silver wire for my negatives? Or do I just use any conductive wires for the paired terminals

    • @doctorlefthandthread
      @doctorlefthandthread  Рік тому +1

      Any conductive wire will do as long as you connect + to + and - to - .
      However if you are using light wire be careful if the bad battery has very low voltage it can melt the wires. Wear gloves and monitor the situation carefully. If they start to melt take them off the gloves are to avoid burning your hands. If you have a multimeter test the voltage before and after try and get it up to 17v before charging it with the charger.

    • @doctorlefthandthread
      @doctorlefthandthread  2 роки тому +1

      I think if you let a battery sit in a discharged state too long or discharge it fully. This means the charger can't recognise it as a battery that needs charged but connecting a good battery some of the energy is transferred to the totally flat one then the charger can charge it. If some cells are faulty this will not work. That is my very amateur understanding of it anyway.

      Use heavy wire but be careful. Make sure and connect + to + and - to -. If you are connecting from a fully charged battery the wires even if they are heavy can melt so wear gloves and watch for this. Try and bring the voltage above 17v to get it to charge.
