Baking soda neutralize the acid (battery acid) inside battery, then add epsilon salt (epsilon salt precipitate in acid environment thus neutralization become important) and proceed

WARNING!! DON'T BREATH IN THE BATTERY ACID FUMES, and make sure the tub you use does not have holes in it like my one and leaked battery acid everywhere.... Get in a well ventilated area (wind blowing across) or use a VOC mask. Baking soda water is in and I have a few hours to wait.

So how'd it work out for you? I've seen a few people on UA-cam recondition batteries with distilled water & epsom salt too. When you say make sure your tub does not leak, can you use a plastic container or what type would be best? Batteries are plastic so I'd guess plastic would work just fine.

@douglasedge4023,. Everything EXCEPT the acid should be mixed thoroughly BEFORE you put it in the battery. Epson salts and the baking soda, put in water in a jug and shake very very well. It should be dissolved before adding to the battery. Flush out battery very very well with clean water before adding the acid or the activator. I hope this helps.

I didnt make this video but I think I get what they did. The baking soda+water is a BASE solution, whereas the stuff inside the battery that's all gunked up on the cells is ACIDIC. By putting the water+baking soda mixture into the battery and allowing the reaction to occur (all of the bubbling), it helps to remove any corrosion on the cells. They seemed fairly heavy handed with the baking soda, so to be honest, I dont think exact measurements are needed. In this particular case- an excess of baking soda is totally okay, so long as it is able to fully dissolve into the water (just be sure that you rinse out the battery very well with tap water or distilled water after it's baking soda soak, otherwise any leftover baking soda will neutralize some of the acid that you put back in.)
After doing this, they then rinsed it with tap water (in my opinion adding distilled water and then shaking the battery once capped and then rinsing it out would be best, but tap water probably isnt too problematic) to remove any of the loose particles that were stuck to the positive and negative terminals inside the cells. After essentially CHEMICALLY CLEANING the terminals, they then put the electrolyte solution back in (sulfuric acid+whatever the "reconditioner" stuff is. honestly, just more sulfuric acid ought to work just fine, it's what was in it in the first place) and capped the nice n fresh battery!

Distilled water works also. You really don't even have to clean it out unless the batteries super old. Take caps off, top it off with water, charge for 15 minutes at a time with 1 hr no charging in between. Repeat 3-5 times until water starts to boil. Once that happens cap it and charge for about 30 minutes and it will be like new.

Most electronic chargers do not have enough amperage and have regulators which prevent what you are saying
You need at least 200 amps with a manual setting that allows 15 min charging
A 2-6amp auto charged is NOT going to do this so saying “charge for 15 min” isn’t going to work for most people trying to follow your advice
The whole process is going to take about 5h of intermediate 15min charge and cools
Also your last charge needs to be 2amp
All of that is important and can’t be left out
Distilled water doesn’t work “also” it’s the ONLY water you should be adding as it doesn’t have minerals in it that will bride the plates which is exactly what we are trying to knock off the plates with our higher amp charging

Usually the black color of the electrolyte means that the internal lead plates of the battery are already severely damaged. Not just sulfated. Baking soda can only help if your plates are sulfated, but not if you have this black sulfuric acid.

    • @sumyunguy9930
      @sumyunguy9930 3 роки тому +27

I think you may be a bit hypercritical when you say "severely damaged"....sure, some corrosion has occured, but I strongly doubt that they are damaged to any great extent.
Think of it like teeth. The lead terminals inside the battery cells are the teeth, and the corrosion (black stuff in the acid) is enamel that has worn off. Now ask yourself, if a little of your enamel erodes off, should you then proceed to remove your tooth, because it's now "severely damaged"? Hell no. Just scrape away any decay, and go on with your day.

@@sumyunguy9930 dude, what? How did you manage to get both batteries and dentistry so astonishingly wrong? Ignoring a LOT of other factors here… sulfate developing on battery plates are like caries/damaged enamel.. sure. But this black sulfuric sludge means that the plates are wrecked to the point that the actual lead has broken off of them like concrete spalling. That’s past the enamel, past the dentin, through the pulp, and the tooth is abscessing fast. If it doesn’t get pulled, the infection can spread to your jaw bone and *really* fuck shit up. I would not recommend cleaning (used) sulphuric acid by placing a funnel on top of such a rather tall, weightless and totally wobbly, unstable plastic bottle. The one used in this case is one of the lightest types that exist. It has no stability and you won't even have to be clumsy for it to go fall onto its side... just a small gust of wind or the acid sloshing into that relatively heavy funnel on top unevenly would be enough to cause that. This is a type of acid you prefer not to spill, not to have to clean up, not to run the risk of getting splashed onto any body part or anything else, and also you want to reuse it and therefore would not want to lose it.

As for how to come by more sulfuric acid? That you'll have to make on your own, or purchase from a supplier (something im not too knowledgeable about right now, but im sure youtube has something on the subject)

I basically had the same problem with my battery. Last month when I was on my way to the store, my car died so I got my multimeter out and I checked the voltage on the battery and it was 9.7378 Volts so I thought “what the heck is going on with this battery”, the next thing I knew I seen some smoke coming from the tips of the battery terminals. I was suspicious on what was going on and I couldn't believe it because this battery was only barely 16 years old which I consider fairly new in today's society, so basically what I want to do is try to clean up the battery with some soap and salt solution and then I might put it on the charger for two or three minutes at a high current rate just to see if it will hold a charge. I'm not sure if that's going to help the battery or not but one thing's for certain before I go out and buy a new battery, I'm definitely going to try these two methods that I suggested. Now on the other hand I could swap the battery out with one from my 1962 Chevy Tahoe but I'm not sure that my old lady would let me do that, so basically what I need to do is first, I'm going to check all the air in the tires before I monkey around with the battery. Then I'm probably going to run a few errands around town down and the next thing I want to do is get some paint and paint the battery terminals because I don't think they look very good without the neon yellow color look on them. If all goes well, I am planning to do a few other things to the terminals. Next after that chore, is get some of that distilled water and pour on the outside of the battery to try to clean up a lot of the dirt and dust its accumulated over all these years. If I have time what I'll do after that it's try to clean both sides of the mirrors on my 1965 Ford Bronco because I've noticed while I was driving that it's hard to see what kind of traffic is coming up behind me. I was having a problem with the battery when I put the headlights on low beam and then when I tried to switch the high-beam I noticed that the voltage excursions were jumping around so I went out and I bought another set of test leads to use on my digital multimeter and there was no difference at all, so I think I may borrow my friend Tony Jones's multimeter just to check those voltage excursions to see if that is normal. Nobody really explained to me how to test a DC voltage excursions when the battery is not in its prime. I am all on my own doing this. A lot of people have contacting me and they said that they've had that problem once or twice and maybe even three times in their lifetime with their batteries but they did something totally different. What they did was loosen the terminals first then they carefully remove the battery and hoisted it out to get rid of all the debris and dirt that's accumulated after all these years then they put it on a slow charge which I believe they told me was 32 milliamps for 6 days, 3 hours and 54 seconds. Next they took the battery caps off and added some distilled water, which they claimed that they bought it at their local Walmart store. I think, if I can remember correctly, they said it was .99 cents plus the sales tax. Can you believe that just 99cents? That's a real good price for one full gallon of distilled water. Speaking of water, yesterday I helped my neighbor that lives to the right side of my house, fill their swimming pool for the new season. It literally took 7 hours to fill. I am not sure how many gallons it is. I have met people in my lifetime that had no idea that there were 4 quarts of water in a gallon jug. They just assumed it was a gallon only. I am not really good at math but I do have a calculator on my cell phone. Speaking of math, it takes me back to grade 11 in high school when my teacher, Mr. Lowry gave us a sneak quiz on algebra. I failed it because I didn't understand what that was all about. I spent most of my high school time stoned and kinda out of it. Some of my classmates were very good at math, and it even showed when they got their report cards. I may have gotten of the path of whatever we were initially talking about. I think it had something to do with blue cheese. No, I remember now, it was car batteries. I never could figure out why they put car batteries in the front of the vehicle and not inside the vehicle. It would be so much easier to work on them, especially in the rain, if they were inside the vehicle. Doesn't that make more sense to you too? Well anyhow, batteries are pretty heavy for their size and some people can't lift them very good. I had a fried, Tony Smith who had asthma and once he tried to lift out his car battery, and sneezed, and the battery fell out of his hands and landed on his right baby toe. It broke the small bones in that toe of his. I called his mothers step daughter Ann but she was not home. So I then called his brothers uncle Fred and told him about what just happened to Tony's toe. He seamed like he was drunk and started laughing at me and said “I don't care about that Bast#$ds toe”. I got mad and hung up on him immediately. From that day on, I never spoke to Tony's brother's uncle Fred. I never really liked him in the first place bacause when Tony and I were 13 years old, we were at a softball game and Fred walked over to us and farted right in our faces. That was not very nice of that old pervert. I heard some stories about him when he was about 20 years old that would make you cringe if you heard them, but I can't get into that right now because I have to finish up my posting here on you tube. I hope I have given you folks some good advice on having some of your problems solved in a timely manner. I like to help out when I can if it is at all possible. I am out for 3 more hours so I want to go now and get a hot dog and a bottle of grape soda. I need to look around for a ride so I can get back to my padded room at the Sinclair Insane Asylum. I hope Dr. Dilbert will not be mad at me for sneaking out....

Just one detail in case you didn't notice it, if the battery already had a damaged cell, the process won't work for you, you can see that because they take a long time to charge and in a few minutes they lose their charge GREETINGS AND BLESSINGS
