    It's called "Backyard Turbocharging." I know you are busy and it's hard to concentrate when you are reading comments on UA-cam, but if you take a moment to click the link above and read over the page, it's going to help you out. I know this, because I'm a mechanic, and I didn't have anyone to help me in the beginning. I have learned every trick there is when you turbocharge a vehicle, I can even make fittings from scratch, and I'll show you how. That difficult oil line problem just became easy! There is no need to buy all these expensive parts you don't need. Everything you see in this video is custom, except for the turbocharger.
    Please checkout "Backyard Turbocharging," eBook on my site: www.ritalie.com...
    Please take a look at my other videos. The "Radiant Charger" video shows you how to fix your dead car batteries that won't hold a charge.
    Surprisingly, this project only cost $500 including the turbo, and fuel injection system. There is a right way and a wrong way to turbocharge a vehicle, most people do it wrong, and I'm saying that from the perspective of a mechanic for 20 years. The car in this video gets 42mpg with the turbo and beats V8 cars in street races, and I'm not exaggerating, the people who race me are absolutely shocked when I tell them I built every part myself, and it was only $500. I've had people come up to me and say that it looks like a "factory" turbo installation. I hope you'll take just a moment out of your life to take a look at my "Backyard Turbocharging" book:

    Much respect, and best of luck. Thanks for your time.

    love your build and I agree with you 100%...4 cylinders are fun and with the gas mileage!! That's a +++'s.! no V8 or V6 can beat..and most midsize vehicles nowadays are 4 cylinders anyways.....p.s: megasquirt are worth the time and money...it started as an open source project and lots of bright minds put theirs heads on it!! in my opinion is a must for every car enthusiast period.....

    It's funny, but I think rebuilding a 3E-E is WAY WAY easier than buying a 4E. To rebuild the 3E-E took less than 2 weeks, start to finish and my engine was in and running. The pistons were $55 off ebay. Its an all new motor about 15,000 miles on it total (3 years of on/off) driving. Glad you like my setup. Thanks for not making fun of me for having the 3E! LOL

    The turbo is a Ford Probe or Mazda turbo off the 1980's and 1990's cars. It is an IHI turbocharger, Model RHB5 - (version VJ11). It's a tiny turbo, but that's ok, it works great. It's off a 2.0L car, so on the 1.5L Tercel, it's more than adequate. I used Megasquirt fuel injection - you can buy it built for about $400 , and it's simple to use. You can run 6 psi boost with no intercooler, so you don't HAVE to have an intercooler. Get some parts together and start figuring out where they fit.

    Just a tip guys, use a metal head gasket. They make a graphite head gasket or a metal head gasket. The graphite ones blow out easier. You can tell the metal head gasket, because it's painted all black, with no aluminum showing.

    Nice build supermuble I been reading and keeping up with your build . I also had a Frankenstein 5e3ete in my el31 at one point. Just took it out to pit back in a full 5efe running a t3t4 turbo charger . love the build you all keep up the awesome work. Its so funny I've watched this video so many times n it just hit me which car it is lol

      +Lorenzo Samuel Thanks a lot. I just realized how bad the quality of this video is, and I feel bad that it has so many views, and so many loyal fans. I wish I would have made a better video. So glad you liked it. I am currently working on my 5EFE/3EE hybrid and I'll make some videos when I get it back together.

    Hi Enticed. Actually when you "turbo" a vehicle, 6 psi boost doubles the torque. Imagine having 2 engines at 6 psi boost. Now imagine having 12 psi boost, and you get the idea. The car drives like it has a large V8 engine, it is literally scary to accelerate in town on small back roads because the tires are still spinning at 55mph.

    Well, its really not a turbo manifold. I used the stock exhaust manifold and spent 2 days making an adapter pipe that is U shaped. I spent about 2 months planning on where to fit the Turbo, because I've never seen anyone else put the turbo off to the side like I did.

    I've never seen anyone put any turbo off to any side on a 3e. Mad props man. If I were more ambitious I may have gone this route, but my 3e also needed a rebuild so I just did the 4e swap. How many miles does your 3e have on it? Is it daily driven? Love that megasquirt pnp.

    In this video I am using Megasquirt DIY fuel injection with fuel injectiors from a non-turbo Toyota Supra with 7MGE engine. Fueling is spot on, I can cruise at lean fuel mixture and under boost I have a solid 12.5:1 air fuel.

    @Storm40501 Ok, here's what you do. Go to the junkyard, find a 91-94 Tercel engine 3EE with fuel injection. If you want a good motor, make sure the car is smashed, otherwise, the engine is probably shot. All you have to do is pull the oil pan off, pull of a rod cap on the bottom of a connecting rod, check for bad crank. If the cranks good, the whole engine should be good. The other thing that goes bad is the exhaust valves, for some reason they burn sometimes. But they are cheap, and easy to fix

    I really could not figure out how to make a turbo manifold for this engine, and I didn't want to upgrade my entire engine, so I just figured out a way to use the stock manifold. It works great, but I should have used thicker steel, because it did break once from stress. This could be remedied by using steam pipe (also known as weld pipe).

    Wow, this is awesome! I just wish i knew how to do this on my tercel...

  • @Ritalie

    Thanks! I could hook hydrogen to this. I plan on doing it soon, since I Have teh computer, and I can lean out the fuel mixture as lean as I want to go. I already get 41 mpg, even with the turbo, because I've got the mixture very lean during cruise. I have an inter cooler on it, yes!

  • @Ritalie
    @Ritalie  14 років тому

    @Storm40501 You can always pull the engine apart, and bring the crankshaft in and have the machine shop "grind" the crankshaft and buy a bearing kit from Ebay.com, that will fix the bottom end. These engines are solid, but people run them out of oil, which will ruin ANY engine. It just depends on your level of mechanical knowledge. I'd say just rebuild the thing, it only cost $300-400 or so for all machine work + new pistons/rings/timing belt/water pump/oil pump/gaskets/exhaust valves! All new!

    I just realized how bad the quality of this video is, and the audio quality is bad too. Sorry guys! Thanks for being so patient. I need to make some new updated videos. I have since installed a 5EFE cylinder head onto this same engine, and it runs so much better. The 5EFE head swap was a simple bolt on, using the stock 3EE pistons and block, along with a 5EFE head gasket. The compression ratio works out perfectly to around 8.5:1 to 9:1 range.

  • @heckyes
    @heckyes 13 років тому

    @supermuble Yur the fucking man! I never thought to leave the stock manifold on and just extend it. How did you get the extension elbows and piping onto it? If you your piping is 2" how did you connect it to the manifold? Did it respond well to the turbo?

    I replaced the 3EE 12 valve cylinder head with a 5EFE 16 valve head. To see details of the swap, visit my site. I was able to simply install a 5EFE head on the 3EE block, and get 8.8:1 compression ratio. ritalie dot com/tercel/pictures

    I have only driven v8 cars my whole life to me there is no equal but I just bought my very first import and very first 4cyl for fuel economy purposes and it's slow and ugly haha I want to change it want to spend like $1100 on my 1996 turcel sport anyone have any ideas?

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie  8 років тому

      +wpas pas Well to be honest, I've owned a couple V8 truck, and I love V8's,, but 4 cylinder cars are just as fun. I can't believe anyone would want a V8 considering how a 4 cylinder get twice the gas mileage. My Tercel with a turbo is as fast as a V8 car and it gets 42 MPG. No joke, 42 mpg city/hwy. Because it's got Megasquirt fuel injection it's barely burning fuel when it's cruising, and only running a 16.5:1 air fuel ratio at cruise. No V8 car is going to approach 42 mpg. I gave my friend a ride in my Tercel and he has grown up building Chevy V8 Nova's, and trucks. He was practically speechless. Haha. He couldn't believe how fast my Tercel was. To "soup up" your car you're going to need a turbo and Megasquirt fuel injection and a lot of time. Totally worth it! But only if you like a challenge. Instead I'd put a Joe Cell on it, which gives a lot more low end torque and will give you 10 mpg more gas mileage - my daily driver has a Joe Cell on it. Works amazing. Gets 46.5 mpg on a stock 5EFE!

      +supermuble Keep in mind this avg is half winter driving in -20C conditions which drop my fuel economy to below 40 mpg. 5 spd, stock everything. It's how you drive. www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tercel/1999/0xsergy/322052
