Great explainer. Thank you! Do you have anything about high idle? I changed the IAC, checked vacuum lines and still nothing.
Did you try cleaning the throttle body? Sometimes the build up on the throttle body or inside the IAC housing will cause a high idle situation. When you checked the vacuum lines, how did you do it? Leaks can be hard to detect and even a small leak (a stretched elbow fitting or hairline crack) can cause a high idle. 4.0's are notorious for vacuum issues. Outside of the easy stuff, check that the wiring on your IAC is all intact. I have heard of cracks in intake manifolds causing idle issues as well. Long story short, high idle can be any number of things, best way to solve it is to spend some time under the hood with a fine toothed comb. Good luck! Hope this helps!
D&E In The Garage that helps, thank you! I'll check the inside of it on top of the other stuff. Thanks again!
Thx man good vid
Any tips or tricks to help fight carbon build up or to help prevent it from happening again?
@@seanwaldo9229 I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I just had the radiator replaced & the first day I had it back it would stall out when I came to a stop. I took it back to garage & it says reset adaptive memory. Could that have fixed it? Now it is stalling out almost immediately. Do you think what you did would help? Thanks!!
Finally, someone who explains thoroughly, concisely, with enough light to see what he's doing. His calm voice and the lack of distracting music and gimmicks are greatly appreciated. I wish I had found his channel before I wasted so much time. Subscribed!
Aw damn! I need you to do more videos. I've been trying to find the crankshaft position sensor on my 2001 XJ for days.
Trying to find it? I can try to do a video on that
@@DEInTheGarage I'm sure it would be helpful for many people. My husband took half a day off work, tried to find it for a little, then took it to a mechanic. Wish I could give it up that easy. I get stubborn when I'm trying to figure something out, lol. You do a great job explaining clearly and thoroughly. Keep up the good work!
So good to find a thoroughly explanatory expert and this understandable video! What a skill! Thank you!
Glad your enjoyed the vid! Thanks!
BRO I'm literally taking my glove off to get to your comment box. Man oh man, you got me through not one but two things I've had holding me up for a whole day in getting my throttle body and IAC sensor off. Dadgum cable #2 was seated in a weird way, so glad I found your video so I didn't break it. Then my IAC was stuck on there bad, I unbolted from the unit but it was still stuck. When you said it should pop off, I got a flathead and sure enough, out it came. I owe you man! 🍺
I have a gorgeous '06 JGCL Ltd. Getting worked done that it's needed for awhile and being able to do it right on my own is just the best feeling ever.
This is an old video but still helping people . I sure miss a simple carb and distributer .
Man, you are a great teacher. You explained everything clearly and the best part is you gave warning to common missteps that dumb shade tree mechanics like me always make. A lot of videos skip supposedly easy steps but when I'm doing repairs on my XJ there is a lot of new territory and I don't even know the basics yet. Your explanations of what the MAP, IAC and TPS do was the best I've seen. I plan on cleaning my throttle body this week or next. Thanks for posting this.
Literally the best video I've found for my Jeep. Super informative. I'm not really familiar with American vehicles and I always say the throttle body is a great place to start on any vehicle. Absolutely perfect video.
Very true!
Bro this has had to of been the most helpful video I have found for the nightmare I’m trying to have my wife drive.
Just FYI, you can simply release the latches on the airbox and remove the lid...which will get all the air intake apparatus out of your way. Hope that's helpful
Thanks for the tip!
Screaming it...Stop twisting the intake tube
Accurate 4.0 knowledge.
Always in fashion.
5yrs later your video is still helping people. Thanks man!
Great video! And right on time, too. 98 ZJ here, same engine, bout to replace the MAP but didn't realize about the other sensors. Also, same issue regarding "bad tranny." I'm new to car repair and really appreciate your thorough but plain spoken description of this project. Thanks
M.A.P. - Manifold Absolute Pressure 😉
Great video only thing I can add; When working on vehicles, any time you create an opening (such as removing the throttle body) to the engine, it's best practice to cover that opening! Tape, clean rags, whatever works best for the situation.
Keep calm and Jeep on!
My error code is P0505 aka IAC valve issue. My Jeep dies at stoplights, barely made it home recently so cleaning all of these components is critical. 60k miles, 2004 WJ...probably never cleaned! Excellent presentation, incredibly helpful, thank you!
wow. :-o i was shocked when your hood actually opened and stayed open with the struts.
I have owned several WJs and learned that the first bit of cash you should throw at a used WJ is the $40 on new gas struts for the hood.. you are gonna be spending enough time under there :-P
Mine still works 04 grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4
I just use locking vice grips 😭😭
Can you put gas struts on an XJ?
My 04 is the same way. That must be pretty common
Thanks Bro! Very detailed directions, please keep doing these Jeep videos. My Lisa sure needs the help. Thank You
D&E In The Garage thanks for posting this video bro! I just swapped out the tps in my wj & it’s shifting much better now. I was thinking my transmission was going bad but I saw this video & it fixed the problem.
Hell yea!! Glad this helped you
I never knew?! I had no idea I should clean the throttebody. I stumbled across your video as I was kooking for info on the throttlebody for my XJ.You explained everything very well and easy to understand. Thanks very much!! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vid!
@@DEInTheGarageI recharge my a/c still blowing hot air I think vent door stuck but heat blows through the vent not a/c.
Great video dude. I’ll be doing my XJ this weekend
Thanks for the video, my GC 2004 had codes P 0122 & 0123, watched this video like a week ago. Today I removed TB, cleaned it, replace IAC and TPS...all codes disappeared and running nice! The TPS just broke when I removed the connector. You just saved me $50 - $60 in labor!! Thanks a lot.
Glad to hear it! That was the point here. Glad it worked for you
I love this video. I love how you go into detail and you show how to unplug the sensor. So thanks great video...
Thanks for the feedback! glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much, best tutorial I have come across for this subject matter. Extremely helpful.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful
Thank you very much
I have a 08 jeep commander and I am having issues. You video has clarified some issues that I had before such as getting to know all the sensors. You've made it very simple to understand.
Thanks. glad you found it useful
That was best explanation I've ever heard
Great video and info, thx! My 1996 grand cherokee is having shifting problems and this video helped me understand the parts. Now when I go to my mechanic, I'll have some ideas to share with them.
Check that TPS. It is a HUGE weak point for the Jeeps with the fuel injected 4.0. Good luck!
Very explanatory!! Helps a bunch. Almost blew $500 on several parts I thought it would be. But I always am looking for videos like this to help me explore my Jeep more. 😀😊👏👍👍 Lol
Glad it helped. Thanks for the feedback!
Great job very informative and to the point. Thank You.
Most helpful video I’ve watched so far! Thanks
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you like it
This is an amazing explanation! You should do a video on Jeep transfer cases
Thanks for the great explanation on the throttle body sensors! BTW, with a rough idle I was prepared to remove the Idle sensor, but discovered that the hose clamp securing the filtered air passage to the throttle body had worked loose. Perhaps the K&N air filter aggravated this issue, but it's now another item to frequently check.
Thanks for Sharing your experience. Very informative 👍
D&E, you are the best. Thank you for every video you've made concerning the Jeep 4.0...:)
Glad you enjoy them!
@@DEInTheGarage I'm going to replace all three of those sensors, especially the one that affects the transmission..:)
I know this is an old video but man this video helped me out so much. I was having some random stalling and taking a bit to start back up and I was at a lost. I replaced my PCM bc it was randomly not getting power to the fuel pump and it seems to run slightly better but now I'm thinking highly about the IAC. Thank you so much man
Where is the pcm at ?
Amazing!!! My truck is at the dealership now and they are saying it will cost $1400 to repair the throttle body. I think even a girl like me can do it...thanks a bunch!
Dang... that is a boat load! Good luck DIYing it!
1400$ 😂😂
STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM DEALERS!! horrible ... when i first got my XJ i took it to the deal for new shocks and a 'tune up' ...when you hear that expression - RUN FAR AWAY!!! $1400. that experience motivated me to do EVERYTHING myself from that point forward
Glad to know that I won't be the first and hopefully not the last girl to attempt this as well. Way2go sis
Sounds like a good deal if they’re changing the headlight fluid also 🤪
wow you are experienced on jeep. my 92 just got its 1st carb clean today. left it on. may be 20 seconds in and out. Thanks; I'v been muddeling through; 3 days now. approach and avoidance.
Thank you! Very informative my new Jeep owning daughter.
Great video. Very useful. Thank you!
Thanks man. I had a TPS code pop up when I went to smog my TJ. I'm going to clean the throttle body and replace TPS sensor. Video def helps.
good luck!
thanks, great video! i have a 98 TJ with a stalling problem. I called every Jeep dealer within 100 miles and not one of them will even look at it. they all say they don't have the equipment to diagnose a TJ! I called Picayune, Slidell, New Orleans, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Hattiesburg. Guess I am on my own with this thing so will start with the throttle body and associated sensors. I will be viewing this video repeatedly for sure!
I cant believe they said that! Hit up JeepForum. Those guys know everything
Very helpful. Just ordered new sensors. Thanks.
Good luck!
GREAT VIDEO...exactly what I was looking for!! 👍
Good explanations on Throttle Body
Literally the last thing I would of thought of. Thanks
Good luck!
Thanks. Nice job. I'll be doing this with much more confidence now, thanks to your video..
Omg thank you so much for this. The other day my jeep stalled and felt like my trans was slipping and my idle is crazy I was pricing out things in my mind
Glad this helped! Thanks for the feedback.
Excellent video! I learned a lot....thank you
Great video. Helped me on my 1998 jeep wrangler.
Perfect. Fixed my problem. Thanks.
Great video! Thanks for posting it. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks for watching!
Very enlightening
I'll do this on my 04 wj at 212mi thanks Doug
It will probably help a bunch! Good luck!
great info and delivery! thanks buddy
Thanks for sharing this. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida
Great video and education. Big thanks.
Thank you mine just went out and I was driving and it wouldn’t shift, I thought my transmission took a crap too lol but you’ve explained everything so now I know! Appreciate the explanations!
Absolutely. Good luck with it!
this is exactly my issue from 3rd to 4th! sometimes just kick it to 4000rpm to push it into 4. was yours giving a code?
Thank you and Good demonstration. Immensely helpful.
Your videos are interesting and useful. Thank you.
Great video! Very clear and concise. I'm having random stalls, no warning. Almost like key was turn off. Always restarts and otherwise run good. Going to clean these parts.
Good luck! Let us know how you make out
Same here with me... It runs perfectly fine otherwise, but stalls out when idling. My idle has been low, about 500rpm, and I think it's about 700 normally. Anyway, it sucks! I wish I could just adjust a screw to raise my idle rpm! Have a great day, I hope your able to fix your vehicle.
Turned out that an O2 sensor wire was dragging on the drive shaft and was shorting out. It eventually burned out the fuse that controls accident gas shutoff system.
Thanks Bud, haven't reached out in years. I've got another 01 grand. Core 4×4/ 2.5 coil lift, adjustable trac bar, everything underneath. My idle started increasing to about 1000 rpm's out the blue. Thank s for the video as old as it is. I know the problem.
Thanks Great Video! 6mo with 97xj ! Woo Hoo! Anyway Flushed cooling system then the misfires began making me crazy the put put. Did a in place rebuild, replaced Cylinder head with a 7120 new plugs, wires, h2o pump ran great till the other day. JY trip on Saturday. I 'll be a fixin!
I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.2 L V8 and am replacing my IAC soon (engine randomly stalls).
I appreciate your explanation of all of the sensors connected to the throttle housing and what they do and what symptom problems each one may exhibit when they start to fail. I will be pulling my throttle housing off of my engine to do a thorough cleaning as you had suggested to get all of the carbon deposits off of the throttle housing for a better running engine.
P.S. I also suggest having one of those long retractors tools handy when working on this area as I initially dropped a cleaning pad down into the throttle housing body and had to walk to the auto supply store to get one to retrieve that cleaning pad. Live and learn.
Good luck with the new IAC. Hope it fixes your issue
Thank you for the information.
Observation. Just remove the air filter cover for more room. 4 clamps :( also, when removing the throttle body cables, make sure you show exactly how to remove them. I thought i could just "pop" off the cruise control cable. Well, I broke the the plastic piece. Try replacing that :( I had to get one made with a 3d printer. Instead, you need to 'slide' it off the cable. I ended up super gluing it back together but it was definitely a problem that could have be avoided. Anyway, just trying to give some advice to someone who may have this problem. Cheers
Yep, I watch this video now and cringe that I didn't think to pop the entire air box assembly off. It is hard to watch. Haha. You are absolutely correct about that and the throttle cables. Thanks for the feedback
Amazing mechanic so wish you were in mich. to call and pick your brain ,my best friend just passed away and he was such a blessing with helping car problems 😢😢
Thanks! Great walk through
I did mine and it works great
So informative and concise thanks!
Nice explaination!
Very helpful and cheap fix. I’m having a lot of the issues you’re talking about as systems on the new Jeep I bought. I thought these were transmission related. I haven’t checked the throttle body but I have a feeling this will help with my P0171 code I’m running and my idling and shifting issues.
Good luck!
Very much enjoyed thank you so much man
Thanks for the video buddy just fixxed my problem!!!!
Great explanation
Excellent,thank you sir,that was a great help
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the feedback
Thanks for the info man !
Dude, Thanks so much from Australia. I bought an 04 WJ with 116000kms (70000miles) on it and she threw code P0123 at me yesterday, was just gonna replace the TPS but i think ill clean the entire throttle body now. Only downside is that parts here are a little more expensive, 155aud for the TPS. Love your work.
Good luck! Glad the video was some help
Great video&instructions.. I recently got a 88 XJ that runs fine sitting, soon as I pull off,it sputters like it's not getting gas, or to much gas/air.Will change fuel filter&check out everything you mentioned. Thanks!
Good luck!
Great explainer. Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback!
Thx man, def helps
Thank you so much for showing me all this I am having trouble with some of the things that you're talking about that ECU I am going to replace it and see if that helps so glad that I found you on here I subscribed and I will be watching more thanks
Good luck!
Thanks for the vid.!
Thanks man. Was just going to clean the TB but now I think I need a new TPS. Sometimes I have a little trouble getting between 4th + 5th when I get on the freeway.
I would give that a try for sure
very informative video Thank You
Great video man
Glad you enjoyed it. thanks for the positive feedback!
Great vid, thank you
Thanks so much for the video
Thanks for the info
Thanks D&E.
Thanks for the video.
The 2002 4L WJ(wife jeep) 150k miles idled very rough was hard to start. I replaced plugs, fuel filter, & coil pack still had same issues. Next day replaced crankcase vent hoses, and the manifold vacuum hoses. All old hoses were cracked. Fixed rough idle and stalling but still hard to start, runs good once started. Found out the new Auto Zone fuel filter didn't have a regulator. Replaced with Advanced Auto filter. Used anti seize on the 4 throttle body bolts. I always use Anti-seize. Runs good.
Great video, sir, thank you 🙏
A fantastic video.
Buen trabajo super, good job buddy
Thank you
Some great information
great video!
Nice vid and explanation of parts and what they do. I know this is an older video. Have you found that when replacing these parts its a good idea to use some dielectric grease or something to seal connections that will maybe protect the parts????
Thanks man! I learned a lot from this video! Changed out my TPS on my own (this is a big frickin deal as I'm not prone to being mechanically inclined) and hopefully that fixed the stalling and lurching problem. I drove it for a while last night and it didn't do it, but the real test will be this morning after sitting all night!
Did it fix your problem?
Did it fix it
It did not 🫤
@@strengthcoachsam fu*ck my dog, same thing is happening to my jeep
Has it been fixed? If so, how?
Great video
Thanks for the tips
Great video! Thanks. I'm tracking down an issue of rough idling when I let off the gas. Maybe this'll help.
Thank you
Great info
Good stuff. I been think of taking off my throttle body to clean it. My idle never been great even after replacing the IAC.
A good cleaning certainly never hurts
Good info. Thanks
