    It does affect the DOF, as well. The best way to think about it is that the combination of the lens (I'll use the EF 50mm f/1.8 as an example) and the speedbooster creates a single EF-M lens with the same physical aperture as before and a focal length that has been reduced by 0.71x (the technical name for a speedbooster is a focal reducer.) If the aperture is the same size and the focal length is reduced, then the f-number must also be reduced, since: aperture = focal length/f-number. For my example lens, the relationship was aperture = 50/1.8 (thus, "f/1.8"), which means that it has a 27.8mm physical aperture opening. With the speedbooster, the left-hand side is the same, but the right hand side has 0.71x50 = 35.5 in the numerator. I.e., same aperture = 071*old focal length/new f-number, or put another way 27.8 = 35.5/new f-number. Thus, the new f-number is, in fact, 0.71*1.8 = 1.28. So, the combined unit will behave exactly like a native EF-M 35mm f/1.3 (rounded for marketing purposes) would.
    I actually have a EF 50mm f/1.4 on the Viltrox SB and an EF-M 32mm f/1.4. Though the former has a slightly longer effective focal length (35mm vs. 32 mm), the difference in FOV is minimal. However, the difference in DOF is very noticeable. The EF 50mm f/1.4 on the speedbooster definitely looks like (and exposes like) an EF-M 35mm f/1 would.

    Just wanted to add on about the magnifying effect of speedboosters, yes it does make lenses one stop brighter, but before that I think we need to apply the crop factor to the aperture first, because the aperture changes along with the focal length.
    Let’s take the EF 50mm f/1.8 as an example, if it’s used on the M50 (APS-C 1.6x crop), not only the focal length becomes 80mm, but at wide open the aperture will effectively become 2,88 (or about 2,8 let’s say). So using the speedbooster will just bring it back down to...
    Let’s calculate,
    I remember the Viltrox is at 0.71x
    So 2.88 x 0.71 = 2.0448
    The nifty fifty will be about f/2 wide open
    So yeah, that’s what I wanted to point out. These speedboosters just help the lenses perform closer to what they would be on a full frame camera, which is always great, but it’s no miracle. I’m still with my kit lens and would probably get the EF-M 22mm f/2 first before going for the speedbooster.
    Anyways, love the video! Especially the part where you talked about the battery drain, literally you’re the first one who mentioned it and I feel that’s a very important thing! Keep up the good work! 💪🏻

    I have an m50 and the speed booster by viltrox. I got the speed booster because I had a canon nifty fifty and figured that I might want to buy second hand ef lenses and have the best adapter with bonus features. The question is not if the speed booster is a cool device, but rather if it's worth it.

      @@BillEricPhotography i agree. But I think that the speed booster(SB) adapts ef lenses, not efs, right? So we may need the ordinary adapter too, which is fine because it's so bloody cheap,. You can get them for under $50 and the ones made by various companies all do the same job because there is no glass to require quality manufacturing. The first lens I bought was the canon 22mm f/2. I like it a lot but that nifty fifty with the SB is so so cool. It makes the f/1.8 an f/1.2. I wish I had a faster zoom lens than the kit lens, that I could use in lower light than outdoor sunlight for filming my grandchildren playing indoors. Thanks for the quick response. Please keep making videos. Being able to discuss with someone who has knowledge is gold.

    I have the m50 with the viltrox speed booster and the standard canon adapter. I am sticking with buying lenses that are EF mount only both in canon or 3rd party not EFs. I just get a lot more bang for the buck in the long term and it essentially gives me 2 lens focal lengths with every lens I buy, which means I need to carry less lenses to get the variety I may need.
    I bought the new Tamron 70-200 lens & man does it look like a beast on the m50, could not be happier with the results from it so far ;)

I have discovered on occasion that the battery was flat or near flat in the morning and just thought at the time that I must have left it on. I never thought about the speedbooster connection.
    Completely agree about versatility, effectively doubling the lens capability of my largely EF bag. It was a major factor in my decision to buy an M50. And it's worth paying that much more for Digic8 to work with the set-up. Finally, you didn't mention that EF-S lenses largely require 'surgery' if they are to work with the speedbooster, which isn't the case your regular Canon adapter.

    Bill, great video. I'm watching this 2 years after you posted it so I'm not sure if things have changed. I got the Viltrox, and when I paired it with the EF 70-200 f4 lens, I actually get an f 2.8 aperture of the much more expensive lens. That was a nice surprise. Likewise, with the Nifty Fifty, it's as you explained. However, the focal length seems to be shrunk when using the Viltrox. For instance, when I import photos taken with the Nifty Fifty into Lightroom, under the histogram, it tells me it was a 35 mm focal length. Same thing with the 70 - 200. I haven't nailed down the math exactly but you get the basic idea. The focal length is like 49 - 160, but don't quote me on that. Lastly, coming to the Viltrox 2 years after you posted this video, I have not found that there is any battery drain if I leave the adapter on overnight, or even for several days. Maybe that's something they've worked out. Thanks for the video. Both the adapters seem to be useful for expanding the versatility of my existing lenses.

While I am super pumped for the M50 and Viltrox booster combo, Canon Rumors said that Canon has patented their own speedbooster (potentially more features?) and there may or may not be an update to the M5. The M5 could have a couple more abilities I'm looking for in a camera. So I'm going to see how the year goes and maybe pull the trigger on one of these setups during Christmas season 2019. It's hard not to go ahead and try it out now, but I think the wait will be worth it. Super excited I don't have to cave on a full frame dslr anymore, though $1250 for the 6dmii was quite tempting last month! It's just too big for me. I'm a tiny person who doesn't need massive gear.

    I bought this speed booster 2 weeks ago, there are a couple of issues with this adapter, the most relevant it is that for some reason if you leave the speed booster attached to the camera, the adapter drain the battery even if the camera it is on off mode. The second problem is, that is not compatible with all the EF lens, there is a list of the compatibility lens on the company web site. Than before you buy, keep in mind that this Viltrox speed booster for M50 it is not perfect as I was thinking before I used.

  • @MrDatodavid

    IMHO it changes the DOF too due to the fact that you're recomposing with speedbooster on to a closer distance to the subject thus changing % of optics to it, which would affect DOF, wouldn't it? Can you check it with speedbooster on and off for the same composition and framing?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому +1

      I've did that with two different cameras. My Nikon D750 with a 24-70 and the m50 with the speedbooster and a 24-70. Both at 2.8. there was a difference. The Nikon had a shallower depth of field.

    • @MrDatodavid
      @MrDatodavid 5 років тому +4

      @@BillEricPhotography Sure Nikon would have had a shallower DOF due to the fact that the f/2.8 on Nikon is f/2.8, and on M50 f/2.8 is (according to the calculation) 2.8*1.6*0.71=~f/3.2 FF equiv. For pure testing purposes you should take same body, say M50, and put the same lens on it, with regular adapter and with speed booster, and compare it for the same composition (recomposing, changing the distance to the subject appropriately) - that way you'd know whether the DOF is affected by the speedbooster...

    The question is how much of a loss in terms of image quality one has to accept in return when using a EF lens with the speedboster for photography? I mean in video mode you somehow constanly have some sort motion, either you pan or follow a subjct or you vlog, sharpness and details may be reduced and one still would not notice but for stills any degradation would be noticable. I'm asking because I think about buying a M50 and the speedboster in order to use my EF primes with a smaller and lighter body (coming from a 5D KMIII with BG).

    Great video. If you film in 4K with a Viltrox speedbooster on the M50, does the Viltrox reduce the crop in 4K very much? Or is the Viltrox better at widening 1080p footage? As far as I know there is no crop on 1080p. I want to get the M50, but your video doesn't say how the much the Viltrox affects the 4K crop. If the crop is 2.56 for 4K, what is the new 4K crop using the Viltrox? If the Viltrox improves the 4K crop, I might consider this camera. Also does the small battery outweigh buying this camera in any way?

    sure is confusing, i was not sure, did you say you used the speedbooster with the tokina 11-16 ? thanks in advance. i have the m50 and looking into glass to better shoot realstate video with it, slowly starting, i know the m50 prob not that great for that type of gigs, hey but we got to start some how . lol

      The m 50 would be perfect for real estate images. Especially shooting of a tripod. I would get the m 11-22 for that type of photography.

    So if i wanna shoot nice pictures for portrait and outdoor would it be better directly buy speedbooster+50mm lense or adapter +50mm lense?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  3 роки тому

      The adapter and 50 would be perfect for that.

      @@BillEricPhotography Is it good for full body portrait pictures aswell with it?

      If you use a 50 mm with the regular can and adapter you are basically shooting at around 85 mm so that might be a little tight for full body portraits. If that's what you're going for don't even worry about a 50 mm get the Canon 22 mm f2 pancake lens. It's a perfect lens at about 35 mm equivalent super sharp and very affordable. Plus you don't need any adapters.

      @@BillEricPhotography ohh.. Because I wanna shoot both half body and full body images for Instagram 🙄 tough the 50mm would be perfect for that haha

      It would be but you would need to use a speed booster with a crop sensor camera. so this field trucks adapter would work for that. With the regular adapter you would need a wider lens.

    If you have a FF lens that is f2.8 does it give you f2.8 DoF that would have been on the FF or is it still 2.8 X 1.6 = F4.8 on the M50.

      You are still going to lose the depth of field but you gain a stop of light which is nice!

    Hello I just bought a m50 with a viltrox speed booster. My lens is the tamron 18-400mm lens and the vignetting in the corners is so bad. How can I fix this problem? Do you think the non speed booster attachment would help?

    • @BillEricPhotography

      We haven’t heard about any vignette problems with that lens, try other attachments see if you get the same problem

      Disney Image Makers on any of the APS-C lenses I tried the vignetting was super terrible. But with the full frame lenses it helped significantly

    Sometimes it does benefit to get native EF-M lenses.
    With mirrorless your flange distance us very small vs like 44mm with EF mount i believe. The inverse square law still applies INSIDE the lense and flange. Thus, the closer the light source is to the sensor the brighter it will be.
    This means that with EF-M (or any mirror less) you can get effectively the same DOF, the same amount of light, as you would with a full frame camera with a full frame lense. But, because they effectively have to gather less light to get the same brightness: native ef-m lenses are lighter and smaller. Compare the sigma 56mm f1.4 EF-M to the canon 85mm f1.8 EF lens. Yes the 85mm has a larger diameter aperture so it does physically let in more light, but the brightness from that light is lost because of the longer travel of light.
    So what im saying: you can get the same quality photos with a native EF-M without needing a big bulky EF lens.
    What is an absolute joke however is the EF-S lenses mounted on an M50. At that point you have effectively the same physical amount of glass elements as an EF lens, and the same bulkiness as well, but you get no real benefit because m50 is aps-c already, same as ef-s. In fact, i would argue efs-s with an eosm camera is arguably less light and less sharp than a native ef-m lens. Also: most ef-s lenses with a speed booster will have heavy vignetting in the bottom half of focal range. So: not sure you gain anything with a speed booster. I say this as someone who owns both the viltrox speed booster and the viltrox efs-efm adapter. I have used an 85mm EF lens with both, and used the sigma 18-35 APS-C EF-S with both.
