    i'm confused. i have a Canon EOS M50 + EF-M 15-45mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM. That was the package i bought. I assume the lens is the standard KIT lens. Now i bought the speedbooster Viltrox Mount Adapter EF-EOS M2 0.71x but they don't match. What's wrong?

    • @mdraihans6446

      you can only use canon EF lenses with the adapter, the speed booster basically only allows you to mount an EF lens to your M50 which has a canon EF-M lens port, hence the name "EF-EOS M2" that's why your EF-M lens wont fit

    The M50 is a fantastic camera, probably the best value from Canon today in such a small and modern body. I bought mine directly with both the Canon EF adaptor and the Viltrox speedbooster, and I use only EF full frame lenses on it.
    This makes each EF lens 2 different lenses, it’s just awesome and so flexible, along with a secured investment if I want to upgrade to a full frame body when Canon will release a real 4k mirrorless camera (nothing really justifies the EOS-R vs the M50 for me...)

      Hello Fred. Thank you for sharing your experience. Does the the IS of the EF lenses work, when you attach them to Viltrox M2 and the Canon M50?

    • @freddumartin7878
      @freddumartin7878 5 років тому +1

      Camino Didjeridu yes it works, I think it’s independent from the camera as long as the lens is powered by the adaptor. I have the L70-200/f4is and the L16-35/f4is and both IS and AF work as well as on a native mount. I also have one EF-S lens (10-18mm/efs) and the IS works as well (and more silently than the L glasses lol).

    This is a brilliant piece of kit. Only had it a week and have been using it with the nifty fifty, but I like the combo with the 40mm pancake, which is slightly wider. Also works well with my EF 200mm L. All on an old M3, photos only. Legacy Canon DSLR user.

    I would switch to an M50 if it didn't nerf 4k and would do 1080p at up to 120FPS. It's such a neat little camera! A speed booster like this makes it even more versatile, but it's still a little nerfed IMHO.

  • @radiozelaza
    @radiozelaza 5 років тому +3

    Speedbooster does not increase aperture on APS-C with EF lenses. It simply makes them perform at the FF aperture, instead of reducing the given aperture by 1.6x (crop factor). So a full-frame f/1.8 lens performs like a 1.8 lens with the speedbooster on Canon M50, instead of performing worse (1.8 x 1.6 = 2.9 aperture in bokeh quality, and also less light hitting the sensor)

  • @samgenodepa6709
    @samgenodepa6709 5 років тому +5

    Great video, the performance of that adapter is awesome. One thing though, your f1.8 lens wont perform like an f1.2.. remember when you count the crop factor in you also have to multiply the aperture by the amount of crop.. not just the focal length. So essentially your f1.8 before you added the adapter it's more like an f2.8 equivalent on a full frame. But now with that adapter which you said is roughly 1.1x crop, should be closer to an f2.. which is why you're getting that extra stop of light.

  • @julster7919
    @julster7919 5 років тому +10

    A full frame lens projects an image that covers more than the APS-C sensor, and the sensor only read 1/1.6 of the projected image. The Speed Booster compresses the projection by 0.71, which means that (1/1.6)/0.71 = 88% of all light the lens passes through reaches the sensor, instead of 62.5%. The amount of light per square mm is thus increased by 40.8%, and in practicality it's more like half a stop more that you get.
    The claim that a cropped sensor gets a lower f-stop than a full frame sensor, with a full frame lens is false. The intensity of the light that's projected is the same, it's just that the smaller sensor only soaks in part of the projection. A Speed Booster does in fact increase the intensity, but the coverage of the projection becomes smaller.

    • @restuharfa
      @restuharfa 5 років тому

      @yunanta anjasrana kalo mau lensa jadi lebih tele, dari pada beli teleconverter, mending beli converter biasa (tanpa speedbooster). Lebih murah, Hasilnya kurang lebih sama.
      Sistem (kali) crop faktor :
      1. Eos m50 (1.6) x speedbooster (0.7) x ef 50mm f1.8 = 55mm f1.9
      2. Eos m50 (1,6) x speedbooster (0,7) x teleconverter (1,6) x ef 50mm f1.8 = 89mm f2
      3. Eos m50 (1.6) x converter biasa (1) x ef 50mm f1.8 = 80 mm f2
      Kalau converter biasa + teleconverter baru makin nambah tele (Tp resiko aperture juga ke crop)
      Kurang lebih begitu. Maaf kalo kurang detil. Moga membantu

    • @Larpeggio
      @Larpeggio 5 років тому

      It doesn't turn your lens in to a 2.8. The speedbooster basically allows you to use it at f4. because if you use that lens with out a speed booster it would f4 Xs the 1.5 crop factor = f6. Your basically getting something close to full frame results, not a full frame 2.8 but a full frame f4. Actually he says it has a 1.2 crop so perhaps a f4.8 is more accurate.

    Using a speed booster doesn't increase the aperture, but not using it in a APS-C sensor decrease it. So using a F1.8 lens in a APS-C sensor makes it become like a F2.6 lens. The 50mm has always the same background blur, since it's always the same lens. But with either a full frame or a speed booster you can get closer to the subject, bringing in the focus closer, and that makes the background blur more.

    Folks, you can use EF-S lenses too with this adapter by slightly modifying the mount (if you're not affraid of doings things). All you have to do is physically cut 2mm of the mount. Just Google ef-s lenses on full frame... 10-18mm is fantastic lens for that purpose.
    BTW, the booster degrades image quality, so I'd avoid using it for photo cause you pay more attention to detail in photo than in video.

I do however use it with a preamp because for me it's critical to hear (and mix) my audio before it gets into the camera (you don't want your interview mic being 30% louder than your Lav mic for example).
    Maybe it's and idea to do a video about preamps in combination with the M50? (I'm using the Saramonic sr-pax2)

    All the information is very helpful in this video except for one thing. You don’t gain depth of field or bokeh with a speed booster. Your Bokeh will stay at f1.8 but you will gain an intense amount of more light at f1.1. Your DOF says it’s f1.1 but really your just gaining more light and will still have the same amount of bokeh as f1.8.

    I tried the Viltrox 2nd Genration on M6 + Voigtlander 40mm f2 pancake lens. It cannot focus to infinity. Viltrox engineer response was that they never tested with manual lens. SO beware that not all lenses may be compatible. The lens works perfectly on the M, M6, 6D, 5DSR and R. so not a lens issue.

    Thank's. I already have the speed booster and it's actually give you more "screen" like full frame but the F stop is not true and it's just showing a low F number.
    If you want to check it, just set the iso to auto, the shutter speed as you need and take the shot, then replace the adapter to the speed booster with the same setting and you'll see that the iso ( which set to auto mode) it's the same although the f number shows a low number.
    If the speed booster would get more light and change the f number so the iso should be lower too.
    Thank's

    I think there is a misunderstanding on how the extra stop of light affects the image. There is no effect on the depth of field "background blur" of the resulting image. The extra stop of light gained is more like an ISO boost, rather than an aperture boost.
    What I mean is that rather than saying a 1.8 lens now acts like a 1.4 or 1.2 lens, I'd say ISO 1600 now looks like ISO 800 or 400. The actual bokeh looks the same.
    The other effect, of course, is that you get more of the background in frame as well.

    You have a few things wrong and I'll touch on the first one. Your guest said with the focal reducer you will get blurrier backgrounds because you have more depth of field. Wrong. Less depth of field for blurrier backgrounds. But that is only partially true because you are not taking in the factors that govern depth of field. Focal length, aperture size and focus distance. If you use an adapter without the focal reducing glass element and those three factors don't change between using a full frame and crop sensor camera you will get the ***same*** depth of field. On a crop sensor using the same focal length and aperture you only get greater depth of field because you back away from your subject to get the same framing. You are changing the focus distance. Put is this way. All a crop sensor does is capture less of the image projected by the lens. Hence the term crop factor. It doesn't change the image itself, because it cannot magically change the physics/design of the lens.

    Just for accuracy the speed booster will NOT make an f1.8 lens on an APS-C camera behave like an f1.2.
    Like 99% of reviewers of speed boosters you forget that the crop factor also effects the amount of light reaching the sensor and so there is always a reduction in speed of the lens.
    Without a speed booster on an f1.8 lens behaves like an f2.9 lens after the 1.6 crop factor is taken into account (1.8 x 1.6 = 2.88).
    With a speed booster much of the light is recovered but not all of it, make an f1.8 lens on an APS-C camera behave like an f2 lens (2.88 x 0.7 = 2).

    • @massmanute
      @massmanute 5 років тому

      Sorry Don, but that is not quite right. As far as light gathering ability is concerned, f2.8 on a crop factor camera gathers the same amount of light as it does on a full frame camera. What does change is the angle of view. For example, a 50mm lens on a crop sensor camera has an angle of view of 1.6x smaller, so as far as angle of view is concerned, a 50mm lens on a Canon crop sensor camera has an angle of view that would be equivalent to an 80mm lens on a full frame camera.
      There are also some depth of field issues, but I won't go into them here. The video itself mentions the depth of field issues, but not all of the information about depth of field discussed in the video is accurate.
      Anyway, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, when used with the speed booster on an APS-M camera will have a similar effect as a 55mm f/1.26 lens on a full frame camera both with respect to angle of view and light gathering ability. It will also have a similar depth of field as a 55mm f/1.26 camera used on a full frame camera.

    I have a quick question about the Vitrox speed booster. I currently own a speed booster for my Canon M 50 m2 and want to purchase an expensive L series ef lens. My question is, Will the Viltrox speed booster degrade the quality of this expensive canon lens I plan to use with it? Because no matter how good the Canon lens is, The image must still pass through the speed booster. thanks

    A great video as usual but after my recent experience of using the Viltrox adapter for my M50 I think I would rather spend the extra money and go genuine Canon. I used the Viltox adapter and after constantly changing lenses throughout the day....it decided to seize and not let go of a 800.00 dollar lens rendering it useless...

    Its an game change for absolutely killing your battery thats for sure.
    The reason why some people have no problems with it and others do is probably I think certain lenses do get the drain some dont.
    My canon 1.8 50mm stm it works great.
    On sigma 1.4 35mm art im lucky to get 15 minutes battery time and drains the battery while off probably in a couple hours.

      Its a shame too because for some reason this adapter on my sigma art lens takes some amazingly sharp shots, I'm not sure why but if it didn't drain battery it would be a must have

    So if I'm just starting out with the M50 and have no other lenses, could I get by with only having this, or would I need this coupled with the other adapter for different lenses? I don't want to be limited to the M50 lenses, so I'm not sure what to do.
    I would like 1 lens for b roll/interviews and one telescopic lens for filming hunts/sports.
