A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is Korean, now 43, a ccm/gospel singer, devout Christian, cancer survivor, university lecturer, cartoonist and an author of fantasy novels. She is one of the best female vocalists on the planet. She is an independent artist, with no social media, who has turned down contracts from the big labels (including from Sony in 2020) over the years. She says that her goal is to use her voice in order to bring comfort to those going through difficult times. Arirang is a folk song (apprx 600 years old) which depicts the hope and longing of the unification of Korea. Sohyang does all the arrangements of her performances, with her team. Everyone is certainly a masterpiece and Bridge Over Troubled Water from Immortal Singers are amazing and popular requests from her fans. Other live versions of Bridge are good too but she was sick for some of them so she was not 110% but you could barely tell. Maybe this is an unusual preference, but I LOVE her performance of Hug Me. It’s super heartbreaking especially if you know the meaning of the lyrics (gotta have the subtitles on). Misty from Begin Again Korea is also amazing. I Will Always Love You is also great and she does something quite surprising during the interlude. Any of her duets from that show is also spectacular. I love Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I’m a shower singer who’s interested in range expansion/tension reduction/overtone enhancement and a big fan of divas queens from east and Southeast Asia. I love them all equally and there is so much to learn from their technique so please keep these videos coming!

Kim So Hyang is a devout Christian and any and all her training was done singing gospel songs at church, she never had any classic training other than pushing herself. A survivor of cancer but still struggles with pneumonia often time has episodes develop and she has performed while under the illness. She is one of my favorites from South Korea and to be honest it is all I listen to nowadays. My all-time favorite is a singer that not everyone dares to react to and she is loved by millions of fans throughout Asia and that is Cho Yung Jin aka ALi. So Hyang and ALi along with another powerhouse sing Park Ki Young are the best of friends often collaborate and duet. Sohyang has a beautiful and disciplined voice. Her cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water gets me every time. Seeing her on stage in her white attire reminded me of another technical and emotional masterpiece: Shoshana Bean singing Make It Rain with big band backing her, at The Theatre At Ace Hotel. Individuals actually stood up in the middle of the song to applaud her. It's a must-see.
As far as her training, she came to the U.S. and started with Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. He is who taught her most of what she knows, but she is also a scholar and I am sure studied on her own. She can sing just about any genre, but is a contemporary Christian singer.
One extra point about SoHyang is she does a huge part of all the arrangements. She really knows how to grab the audience and keep them until the end. There no escaping until she lets you free and the end of the song!

As a teenager, she converted to Christianity and planned to become a cartoonist and artist. Instead, she joined a band and married drummer Kim Hee-jun. She started singing late and has no formal vocal training, but since has had some lessons from Seth Riggs (American voice coach). Two months after her marriage, she required uterine surgery and was told she would not be able to have children. She was 21 years old then. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. FYI, she is basically a self-taught singer and thus did not have any classical training to speak of. She said she learned to sing by listening to the likes of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion... etc. However when she started singing professionally, she did take some vocal lessons from well known vocal trainers, she said. Her major in college was French literature.
So Hyang is a miracle and she knows it. She has always had an outsized desire to sing for the world. Well now the world comes to her like just now. You are from? and I am in California at 11:33 pm and So Hyang sang this what 5-6 years ago? So something that was not even conceivable when I was a young man. So she is affecting lives not just in real time but also as time moves forward. Her reach is now around the world and through time. Not bad for a young girl from South Korea. She is one of my top five favorites. Along with; Daneliya Tuleshova of Kazakhstan, Morissette of The Philippines, Angelina Jordan of Norway, Gracie-Jayne Fitzgerald of Wales. I watch them all every day as I am 71 yrs.old and not in good health. She is the favorite of many vocal coaches. You just won't believe the stack of crazy she has out there. One after another, many highly different from one another but yet still mind boggling. Heck she even raps in one. It sucks being a watcher and knowing what reactors are missing out on lol. Great starting one though. Everyone is certainly a masterpiece and Bridge Over Troubled Water from Immortal Singers are amazing and popular requests from her fans. Other live versions of Bridge are good too but she was sick for some of them so she was not 110% but you could barely tell. Maybe this is an unusual preference, but I LOVE her performance of Hug Me. It’s super heartbreaking especially if you know the meaning of the lyrics (gotta have the subtitles on). Misty from Begin Again Korea is also amazing. I Will Always Love You is also great and she does something quite surprising during the interlude. Any of her duets from that show is also spectacular. I love Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. I’m a shower singer who’s interested in range expansion/tension reduction/overtone enhancement and a big fan of divas queens from east and Southeast Asia. I love them all equally and there is so much to learn from their technique so please keep these videos coming!

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an Angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.

Kim So Hyang is a devout Christian and any and all her training was done singing gospel songs at church, she never had any classic training other than pushing herself. A survivor of cancer but still struggles with pneumonia often time has episodes develop and she has performed while under the illness. She is one of my favorites from South Korea and to be honest it is all I listen to nowadays. My all-time favorite is a singer that not everyone dares to react to and she is loved by millions of fans throughout Asia and that is Cho Yung Jin aka ALi. So Hyang and ALi along with another powerhouse sing Park Ki Young are the best of friends often collaborate and duet.

Sohyang has a beautiful and disciplined voice. Her cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water gets me every time. Seeing her on stage in her white attire reminded me of another technical and emotional masterpiece: Shoshana Bean singing Make It Rain with big band backing her, at The Theatre At Ace Hotel. Individuals actually stood up in the middle of the song to applaud her. It's a must-see.
As far as her training, she came to the U.S. and started with Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. He is who taught her most of what she knows, but she is also a scholar and I am sure studied on her own. She can sing just about any genre, but is a contemporary Christian singer.

someone posted this info helpful... 👉 Kim Sohyang (called Sohyang) * 1978 in Gwangju, South Korea. She is self-taught and a real all-rounder.
Sohyang comes from poor divorced parents. As a teenager, she converted to Christianity and planned to become a cartoonist and artist. Instead, she joined a band and married drummer Kim Hee-jun. She started singing late and has no formal vocal training, but since has had some lessons from Seth Riggs (American voice coach).
Two months after her marriage, she required uterine surgery and was told she would not be able to have children. She was 21 years old then.
She decided to devote her life to singing for God and the comfort and joy of people. She is also a fantasy novelist, gives singing lessons at the Music House Academy in her home town and is a guest speaker at a university.
She made her singing debut in 1996. She only became known in 2012 through her participation in the second season of the Korean singing competition I am A Singer.
Sohyang became the first Korean female artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game.
After the huge success in 2017 in the "King of Mask Singer" (Korea), Sohyang’s appearances became less and less. She was struggling with severe pneumonia, which came back eight times and almost took her voice away.
Sohyang, hailed as "Korean Mariah Carey" for her outstanding vocal skills, shared how obsessed she was. She didn't want to damage her reputation, didn't allow herself to make any mistakes. So when she was stripped of sheen, all she could do was repent and reflect on her Christianity. She realized that the most important thing as a singer was to comfort people about not being perfect.
She rejects contract offers from major music agencies for reasons of belief (Sony Music in the USA). She says, "... I'm perfectly fine sharing my music on UA-cam, which can do to tens of millions of people around the world without feeling stuck. Maybe that's why I was born around this time."
Sohyang's vocal type is a lyric soprano, specifically a Full-Lyric Soprano. Her vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (supported range from G # 3 to E6), a total of 3 octaves, 3 notes, and a semitone. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals, with characteristics being a homogeneous, rounded, and bright instrument of remarkable beauty and meticulous control.

In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light."

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Princess" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has a bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

FYI, she is basically a self-taught singer and thus did not have any classical training to speak of.
She said she learned to sing by listening to the likes of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion... etc.
However when she started singing professionally, she did take some vocal lessons from well known vocal trainers, she said.
Her major in college was French literature.
So Hyang is a miracle and she knows it. She has always had an outsized desire to sing for the world. Well now the world comes to her like just now. You are from? and I am in California at 11:33 pm and So Hyang sang this what 5-6 years ago? So something that was not even conceivable when I was a young man. So she is affecting lives not just in real time but also as time moves forward. Her reach is now around the world and through time. Not bad for a young girl from South Korea. She is one of my top five favorites. Along with; Daneliya Tuleshova of Kazakhstan, Morissette of The Philippines, Angelina Jordan of Norway, Gracie-Jayne Fitzgerald of Wales. I watch them all every day as I am 71 yrs.old and not in good health. But I have my computer and I travel the world listening to my favorites and also new singers that seem to be coming from everywhere.

She is the favorite of many vocal coaches. You just won't believe the stack of crazy she has out there. One after another, many highly different from one another but yet still mind boggling. Heck she even raps in one. It sucks being a watcher and knowing what reactors are missing out on lol. Great starting one though.
