I have been polishing my shoes/boots since I was 9 years old (BRAT), and that would be for 35 years now. I also have leather tooled since I was 13. Both are lost arts. This information is refreshing to learn and i can smell in my memory the fresh polish and wood burner while watching your video. Thank you. 6 years later...
The reason for the hole in the tin is for export purposes. It allows the tine to expand and retract. It's a lot easier to use just one method of manufacture of the tin.
Thank you . I've been cleaning my boots for years and never noticed the whole but have noticed my polish getting dry . I will use tape from now on for the hole.
Hi, If you very gently heat it, it will melt, it will also smell, the smell is even more of the solvent evaporating. You need to add more solvent and mix it in and then put your polish in a sealed container to stop it happening again. The more solvent that you add, the softer your polish will be. For solvent I use pure natural turpentine, which is available from art shops in small quantities, the leather seems to like it but your shoes will smell of it for a couple of days. Apparently the manufacturer's use mineral spirits, probably because it evaporates quickly, however in my opinion a quick fix is not necessarily a good fix. I hope this helps, Jon
I would not, the whole point of the solvent, whatever you use, is that it dries and leaves the waxes on the surface. Good luck and let us know how you get on. Jon
@@31446963048 I doubt there is a downside. Pure gum spirit of turpentine derived from pine or balsam fir is a solvent and a carrier. Petroleum based imitation turpentine is used as a cost cutting measure. It is toxic and foul smelling. Genuine traditional turpentine is vastly superior in every respect but cost. This is the base that all of the old master oil painters used to make their paints.

So I can help with this. At the top right of your screen on this video there should be a little box with two Cs in it all you have to do it click it and it should turn on subtitles so you can read
Well, yet more misinformation. The hole isn't for ease of opening, nor is it some ploy to rip off the consumer. It's to prevent the container from popping its lid during shipment. It's an importation requirement. Taping over the hole won't help.
It's not misinformation when he was just speculating as to the reason. It doesn't matter why it's there, it is and covering it is going reduce the amount of solvent that evaporates. Nothing he said about that dumb hole is hurting anything.
UA-cam automatically creates subtitles (closed captions) for almost all posted videos. For example, this video has automatically generated subtitles. Turn on the subtitles by clicking on "CC" (Closed Captions) in the lower right part of the video window. The default language is the language of the video. If you go to the "Settings" icon shaped like a gear (in the lower right part of the video window), you can get automatically generated subtitles in many other languages.
Just don’t buy crap petroleum based polish like this rubbish. You use polish to protect leather so why would you purposely use something that does the exact opposite to what you are trying to achieve.
Hi, We use this because it is what you get when you go to the shops and ask for a tin of shoe polish and I do not know any better. What would you recommend us to use instead?

I never looked for the holes, thanks. I used to use lighter fluid to reconstitute my shoe polish.

What VERY useful tips! Thank you so much.

great! thanks for the extra info about the holes in tins
Thanks mate. This is absolutely genius. UA-cam Rocks! I learn so much here. Have a good day, mate
The turpentine trick was superb! This will save me a lot of money because Saphir creams and wax polishes are not cheap.
Very useful video thanks.
Great tip! Thanks!
Thanks, it works.
Another great tip 👌
Thank you Matthew, That was one of my first videos and has been one of the most popular. Regards, Jon
Thanks
The Perfect Phenomena.......
You are the man
Even kerosene is good to use. Infact you can mix melted candle wax with kerosene and you get a colourkess / clear polish.

Any links to turpentine you would suggest?
turpentine is pine resin based, white spirits that he mention are mineral spirits and thinner. Don't use those.
I gotta admit, your voice is same like Winnie-the-Pooh
thnk you for the video, why not mineral spirits?
I think that you could use all sorts of solvents, even petrol but pure turpentine is kind to the leather.
Can i mix them vaseline and then melt it??

Any shoe polish lover like here
Kiwi uses mineral spirits
I wonder if there is any "effect" to using turpentine to revive dried polish with Kiwi.

Of course it won’t help, there isn’t a rubber gasket on the tin, so it’s not airtight anyway.

Can't deaf people read what to do?? Please whe can't hear
Hi Violet, Sorry about that, and it's a very valid point, I must try to find out how to do subtitles. Jon
