The #seductive #Falasarna beach: 58km from Chania town and you’re in #paradise. White #sand, emerald water and magical #sunsets. Endless beauty at one of the most stunning beaches in the #Mediterranean, 3km long, north of which is #Ancient Falarsana.
The picture-perfect #Balos lagoon: 52km from Chania (or you can take a #caique from #Kissamos) and you find yourself in one of the most #photographed beaches in Crete, the heavenly saltwater lagoon of Balos. R3elax in its shallow blue-green water and sink your feet into the luminescent sand made up of thousands of broken seashells. Across the way, two #islets, #Gramvousa and A3gria Gramvousa. Majestic Balos beach: The exotic greens and blues and sweeping sandbanks of Balos beach are what first catch the eye. The plant life is perfectly adapted to this corner of Crete and the #snorkelling - especially where the lagoon becomes deeper - is #magical.
#Elafonisi is Chania’s other pin-up beach and, as beauty queen beaches go, it takes some beating. This time your reward is a paradise of fine white sand and shallow turquoise water. Sometimes Elafonisi is an island you can reach by wading through knee-deep water and sometimes it’s connected to the mainland. But it’s always heart-meltingly beautiful. Exotic Elafonisi beach. There’s an organised side to Elafonisi beach on the mainland, on which you can find amenities, but make sure you explore the entire area, which is also Natura 2000-protected. Amongst the sand dunes, you’ll find rare plants and there are plenty of coves for privacy. #Kedrodasos
#Loutro boat trip: No Chania road trip is complete without exploring the coastline, so you’re off to Chora Sfakion on the south coast today. It is a 73km (1hr25) drive but once you’re there you can sit back and enjoy an all-day boat excursion.
Hike the unforgettable Samaria Gorge: The Samaria Gorge has rightly earned #legendary status from hikers who have visited Chania. It’s worth devoting a day to exploring its 16km length, especially the narrow passage (only 3m wide and over 100m tall) towards the end of the gorge called Portes (also known as the Iron Gates). Your five-hour hike will end in Agia Roumeli, where you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing swim.
#Hora Sfakion, Loutro, and Frangokastello: You’ll arrive at Hora Sfakion travelling south from Chania through the beautiful Aradaina Gorge. Discover the history and the legend surrounding the impressive Frangokastello Castle, built by the Venetians in 1371. In May 1866 a bloody battle took place here.
#Scuba diving and snorkelling in Chania: You’ll also be getting into the water, of course, but not just for swimming. There are some great dive sites and excellent snorkelling in Chania. The region’s distinctive terrain continues below the surface of the sea, with some great caves and reefs to explore. #Souda Bay, the coastline by Kalyves and Georgioupolis introduce you to #underwater gems.
