RECOMMENDED VIOLINS:
Fiddlerman violins are the only violins I currently recommend. You can choose the violin to suite you depending on your budget. Remember the cheaper you go (buying rubbish from Amazon for example), the worse the violin will be (garbage most likely) and the HARDER it will be to learn - which is why Fiddlerman violins are an excellent beginners choice:

Just got a Vangoa electric violin(early Valentine's Day gift) and have always wanted to learn an instrument for the longest time; when I was younger and yet tutor fees were the reason why I didn't until now at 28 going on 29 in September.

Sounds a very reasonable set of goals, and feel that much of what your offer in leveling within a quarter or half portions of a year are tractable and fluid enough that many would find some satisfaction at playing in the fourth or fifth segment of the training. I am also very happy with my Violin. I'm also an adult beginner but already having my first violin 2 months. It's very tricky sometimes teaching yourself the stuff but I still love my violin and as a 2 monthler I'm already way more trained than Alison expects from 1-3 months, I am even playing more complicated pieces for a beginner. Hi Alison! You are my Violin Teacher by choice! I have had my violin for about 5 days now, and I’ve been following your tutorials about holding the bow, how to bow, how to hold the violin, and bowing the open strings. I make sure I hold the bow the way you show us, but sometimes, as I’m bowing, I catch myself moving my fingers some… then I just stop and go back to the basics of holding the bow. I want to get to a point where my fingers don’t move when holding the bow… it will take practice… thank you so much for your expertise and excellent teaching! I have been a teacher all my life, and I know a great teacher when I see one. You are one of the best!
You have helped me tremendously!! I finally made a decision on what violin to buy. And a lot of listening to violins and violinists .... bought a Master by Fiddlerman with Evah Pirazzi Strings and satori rosin complete set up. I have listened to so many of your videos and will continue to do so! However, I believe as a beginner having never played a violin, that I should start with a good teacher that is coming to my house and i am doing just that. My first lesson is April 7th. I can't wait! My violin I should receive today!! I also have been learning the flute for about the last year with lessons off and on, due to health reasons. Keep up the great work you are doing !!!!! I recommend Alison's videos to anyone trying to learn piano. I found her videos for beginners the best available on youtube. Best basic lessons for beginners. I personaly learned reading music and music theory from her videos.👍

I have basic music theory knowledge from playing guitar, mandolin, harmonica etc. I've always wanted to learn violin but never had the opportunity. First of all I want to thank you for putting out all these vidoes. I still remember that about 3 years ago when I was planning on buying a violin I looked at your vidoes and once I got it I continued to watch your videos to teach myself which I must say were very helpful. For a while I was teaching myself but eventually I found a violin teacher. I'd say that for the first year of learning was when I tried the most but around my sophomore year in high school I started slipping up and I wouldn't practice at much. It was only not practicing but my grades weren't the best and I wasnt interested in a lot of things I used to like. Anyways now I'm a senior in high school and I guess you could say that Ive been playing the violin for 2 years and some months but for about a year I wasn't trying my best. Right now I haven't practiced for almost 2 months and it's because I've been busy with school but today I tried playing and I feel like I have not accomplished much that I wasted so much time because I don't even know how to do simple things and now I don't even know if I should start playing again. I don't really know what to do so I wanted some advice
I would just go back to what you were doing and start there. As for time and effort, only you can decide that and sort that. If you have lots going on and can’t practise, then there isn’t much point as you can’t learn by playing for a few days then nothing for a month. Start again when you feel ready to commit

I've been learning viola for about a year but my teacher thought I should learn different because adult, I have been stuck with Scarborough fair (unaware it existed before I got the music) the whole time and for some reason still can't get finger placement right for the notes -eyeroll-
This at least gives me some guidance on what I should be focusing on, guess it's back to square one for me.
I just received a Violin for my birthday, and I love that, so now I’ll be able to play with my kids 5 and 6 y/o. I’ve been watching your channel for quiet some weeks and I loved it. Starting practice now with the scales.
In the other hand you have amazing videos recorded, that I really been into it, day and night, :) when is possible.
Kids are using Suzuki, but for me, yours is great. In some point if you have online class, for USA, I probably join it.

I support all music students learning in any way they can and I support online teachers who transfer their musical knowledge in the best way they can, but with all the subtleties that playing the violin *properly* requires, nothing can replace a teacher in person, and good teachers take you along slowly for a reason. There are more to playing violin than just making the right sounds. One extremely important thing is to make those sounds with total relaxation of fingers, hands, and arma. I for example can play Gounod’s Ave Maria with “good” intonation and vibratos and all, but my Juilliard trained teacher is returning me to doing basic scales with fingers “between” the string producing terrible scratchy sounds and all just to train the hands to relax and not clamp on the notes, something that I would have never figured out on my own. That and tons of other subtle techniques that can only be observed, taught, and learned in person, otherwise one would forever remains a “hobby” violinist. So keep on playing and do your best, but do get a good teacher in person if that’s an option for you.

I've actually being watching your videos and using your songs books right from the start - right from your video on choosing a violin- I went with the Stentor Conservatoire I should make a progress video to show how I'm getting on using your lessons and song books.
After starting with second finger, I wondered about the tune and just realised,... I played for ten minutes second finger high and should put him low XD. Selfimprovemend is so important and everybody should agree, that progress takes time.
We all want to skip to the part we actually get Pros and get disapointed when the next reachable step is just a small one. But that is how it works, right? Building up skills and not rushing trough.

I can't look at sheet music. I've tried to look at it and I could feel an aura start. (Photosensitive Epilepsy. This type of epilepsy can also involve patterns.)

I get so tired of my local Violin teachers completely enwrapped in the Suzuki method; which is for children and parents - NOT adults. I do not need to ask my deceased Mother whether I can learn Violin or not and to have to play twinkle twinkle. Wish they had ABRSM here in the US.

I too detest the Suziki method for various reasons....
ABBRSM is in the US and you can take their exams! I have put a few Skype students I had into ABRSM exams in the past. They are dotted about the US, but they are there.

1 question I have about the printouts to go along with the first 10 lessons. Are they pdf files? I currently do not have a laptop so I will need to try and do it from my phone.

What i would find quite helpful would be if you had an app of some sort where the sound of each fret of the violin is displayed correctly.
It could be a simple video too.
I am saying this because i always find myself practicing where the frets are before practicing the pieces themselves.
Some people would say to place stickers but i believe that once you take them out the ear would still need to understand if the notes are played correct and also you don't have stickers for 2nd and 3rd position(i mean playing all the notes of first position higher in the violin).
I always find myself wanting to practice all the first position notes before i play the pieces in your book so i go to another video just to hear and play the basic notes and get that ''feeling''' of how the note sounds right on my fingers. Cause you know that each violin is slightly different and each human's fingers are unique so the player himself would have to ''well tune himself on the violin :P''. I am saying all this because if you build an app that would include the correct sound of all the frets notes ,the # (etc. etc.) of all positions, we online and with tutor players would have a solid point of reference to train and build strong habits each one with his own way.

thanks this is really help full can you make a video on notes and reading music I can play first position well and I know a few notes I second position when I see them but I am starting to run into 3rd position and I cant read them and play them cause I don't know the finger positions that correspond with them.

I've been subscribed for a bit planning on picking up the violin for a while and may finally have the chance to really soon. My one problem is that I still haven't decided between violin or viola. Which do you think would be better to start with? How transferable are the skills from one to the other?
I've heard that many do violin at a young age mostly due to the size, but size shouldn't be an issue at this point. I also would love to perform in groups or orchestras at some point however I also would love to learn some solo pieces for my own pleasure. The problem with that is that it's easier to do violin in an orchestra and the like (or so I've heard) but I prefer the sound of the viola for many solo pieces.
I would forget about everything and just learn what you want to learn or you will always resent it.
It doesn’t matter where you want to play as in an orchestra for example as that may never happen for example, so play what you want to play and just be happy.
Sounds like you are leaning towards the viola...

At 54, I decided to learn Violin. Bought an inexpensive Mendini from Amazon and started last Spring...kind of put it down after a couple of weeks, but picked it up again about 3 Weeks ago and am now on Lesson 8. I have become a bit practice obsessed. Not setting particular time goal just playing as much as I want, which on weekends seems to be all day on and off and every evening when I get home from work. Can you practice too much? Also, I ordered the Fiddlerman Artist (a Christmas treat to self) to replace my $100 Mendini. Thank you so much for your lessons and for the Violin Reviews!

That was a great video. Learned a lot. I do have two questions though that maybe you can help me with. 1) At what point or time should a student remove finger tapes, if they are using them? And 2) When should a student stop playing in the middle of the bow only, and start using bow division? Ive been playing for six months and just up against these situations
1. tapes should be removed as soon as is possible but not too soon that you rely on them. When you start to feel you are ignoring them, remove them.
2. you would have been doing this right from the start. I teach my students to use all the bow so it isnt an issue when moving on - so i guess you should start to do this asap ideally.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thanks for that information. Ive been playing 6 months and just purchased a new violin, as well as on the verge of finishing my 1st method book. I haven't put finger tapes on my new violin and found that i rely heavily them. I been practising a lot to a tuner lately without tapes and can now see the importance of intonation. Hopefully things will get easier. 😁
Hi Allison, Great explanation in setting up a progress path. You mentioned to get a good violin after 3rd month. The electric violins fascinates me a lot. Will it be a good choice to get one of those or acoustic ones are more preferable to get the vibe and feel?
An electric violin should be bought in addition to a good acoustic violin - not to replace one as they are not quite the same as acoustic violins. You should not use them to learn on.
The supplementary electric is the one you would use for recording in home studio right? I have both, and have put a cheap, stick on piezo pickup on the acoustic, and it's fun to add effects like vibrato and reverb with, but not good enough to record with I don't think. The electric is less scratch with better effect result I've found.

Its never too late as there is no time limit on playing an instrument, even to a professional level.

So... How did it go? I just started last week and I am already frustrated for not being able to play open strings.
I took violin lessons for 1 year but I felt I was stuck so I leave them, and I don't know how I will learn things like the tempo or how to properly read a piece... I am starting to play violin again after almost a year and a half without even touching my violin
I am a concert level pianist just starting out on violin, most of these lists assume you know nothing about music. My main problem is just working on a path to playing the music I want. I don't quite have an understanding of what the 'easy' pieces are outside of the Suzuki books. The lists I find usually start of with those and end with them.

I started the violin in January and tried to practice 5 days a week but this has been difficult since July. I also just re-started after a 4 week break due to work schedule. I'm now on song book 1. How many hours per week do your students practice to fall into this timeframe? In addition, should I finish song book 1 before continuing to lesson 11-20? Thanks in advance for your support.
Do not be discouraged - everyone does learn at a different pace and as I mention in this video, this is simply a 'gide'. It is not the be all and end all or absolute by any means, just a way to measure your progress and to give you targets and goals.
If it is taking you longer to get to where the video says, then thats fine - this is all in an ideal world and again, just something to measure yourself by - not to get yourself frustrated over if you dont quite fit into these time frames.
They are lose and also, the point of this really, is more of a guide for those of you learning at home.
It might depend on what you are practising - which is more important than the amount of time. You could practise 5 hours, 7 days per week, but if you are not practising the right thing, then its going to be wasted time.
You are self teaching/learning at home and it has its downfalls, but its free and no hassle.
With my Violin Lesson Course, you should go though lessons 1-10, then complete the Song Book 1, then go through lessons 11-20, then go through the Song Book 2.
Im currently working on lessons 21-30.

Yes. You need to finish everything book 1 or lessons 1-10 related before you move on and also make sure you have everything down with no unanswered questions so to speak, or any confusion over which note it which on the violin and/or music.
This is super important before moving on otherwise you will really struggle to move on.
I completed book 1, lesson 1-10 and I'm comfortable with the information. I started the songs in song book 1 but wasn't sure if I should learn all songs and then start lessons 11-20 or do both at the same time. What do you suggest?

I started the violin with the Stentor II and having played it about 9 months now, it keeps making a scratching noise all the time (I've been assuming that it is only my bad bowing technique), but could it be time to upgrade, as changing the strings to Dominants and upgrading the bow (carbon fiber) haven't been helping and I have been trying to focus on the right bowing technique..? Mostly I'm self-taught: I've been watching your videos (I'm very grateful for them) and on the side been practicing with Suzuki books.. at the end of book 2 now (however played some 3rd book pieces occasionally).
Yes - it probably is time tp upgrade. These cheap student violins really do only last so long before you literally outgrow them.
Because they are poorly set up where the string action (distance of strings from fingerboard), peg box and bridge has not been properly thought out, these are all the main factors that can make or break your playing from here on in.
You want to look for something properly set up and properly made by an actual person as opposed to a 'branded' one that has rolled off the factory line.

I think one more thing that is important for us who self taught is that, try to search a song that can keep you interest to play Violin.
Sure you will butchered the song, but better than you lost interest playing violin.
Unlike having teachers that prepare things you need to do, you had to search yourself and it can be tedious.
So get a song you like, try to search easy version.
Idk Like "he is a pirate" or " Hallelluyah" or anime opening.
