    if you have a motorcycle and are visiting Maine with the idea you will get your ADV onto the trails, get online a get a Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Online ATV and Snowmobile Registration. That lets you ride on the ATV trails, whether state or private owned. It's like less than $100 for an annual, but it can also be purchased for a month (I believe) a week, and a day.

      So sorry it was so frustrating for your ride. It’s probably not something we would know in advance. We would just assume it is like every other place.
      As frustrating as it is, I have to say I am happy that there are some who want to preserve the entire experience of nature. Even I as a motorcycle rider find it invasive when loud motorcycles are riding through such beautiful and pristine locations.
      Was motorcycle riding in Acadia National Park also prohibited? I need to know because I want to ride through it on my quiet road bike. 😂

    Hi Lea, love your videos. We also travel a lot; I am a retired US Army and have a house in Germany (Neustadt ADW) w/car and motorcycle... travel trailer, pickup truck, and motorcycle in the USA... we are back and forth a lot. Have seen about everything east of the Mississippi. We have been to many places you have been. Just for your information about logging roads in Maine, those roads are there for the logging trucks, and they drive like a bat out of hell, throwing rocks and clumps of dirt... dangerous to those in open vehicles (the same goes in Canada). My wife now reading your book... Alles ganz toll! Enjoy!!!🙂

    Beautiful Maine!! Sorry you missed riding the dirt roads. That white sign (on the dirt road where you turned around) had two sections, "Road use" and "Land use". The top part listed road use where motorcycles are not excluded. The bottom part listed land use and did exclude motorcycles. As we were
    watching we were wishing we'd been there with you to point that out!! Looks like you made the best of it, though, as usual! Hope we get to see some of Acadia in 2023.

      That’s such a pitty - but it’s hard to understand as a foreigner and unfortunately I didn’t meet one single person on the whole ride who I could have asked about it. Hope there is a next time, because Maine is so beautiful. Even though I have to admit that I was quite disappointed already by the laws of Baxter state park…/

    • @paulwestman3520
      @paulwestman3520 Рік тому

      I'm wondering if similar signage at Baxter State Park is what is confusing motorcyclists?
      No motorcycles / motor vehicles of any kind allowed on the hiking trails?
      Motorcycles pay road taxes just like cars & trucks. Only license plated motor vehicles allowed to operate inside of the park.
      In the USA it is kind of hard to segregate anyone or anything.
      I could easily understand if the park had a noise ordinance to exclude overly Loud vehicles/Motorcycles, but they would need to use a decibel meter to test questionably loud vehicles, I would think.

    I live in Maine and just finished my motorcycle safety class so the issues you ran into are a big deal to me. However, you mentioned that big trucks can go anywhere and motocycles can not. This is actually not the case from my research. If a car or truck is allowed, a motorcycle that is street legal is also allowed. They can not discriminate. Thanks for the video. I would like to enjoy nature on a bike and it seems that may not be so easy in Maine. Lots of logging trails to explore where motorcycles may not be allowed.

    Beautiful video, Lea. I could have an explanation for the motorcycle problem. But I' m not sure. Many bikers have a Harley Davidson and think they have to make noise, many even remove the mufflers. 😞 To be honest the HD's are not the only loud bikes around. And series like fast and loud don't educate the people Esther.
    In the 1960's a friend of mine also cut a piece of the mufflers of his 1965 Triumph Bonneville. When he was in England on vacation he needed help with a broken clutch cable and the Triumph factory in Meriden helped him out. But they noticed the shortened mufflers. They said: "sir, we spend about a 100,000 pounds a year on research of muffler systems, and you take your hacksaw and you cut 4 inches off....... (Sorry for my English)

    I had a similar off-pavement experience here in Oregon with Forest Service roads just east of Depoe Bay. Here is an email I sent on 9/14/2022:
    "My first attempt at a dirt road I rode up a gravel road from Moonshine Park near Logsden, Oregon. It was a rough ride for a few miles and I came to a open metal gate with a big sign that prohibited a number of things, including entry during fire season, which it is, AND no "ATV, Motorcycle or Electric bikes". Go figure.
    The next attempt I got way into the forest before I came to a metal gate and next to it was another sign. It prohibited a number of things but 2 were, "vehicles off road" AND "ATV or Motorcycles of any kind". I don't know why it is OK to drive a car on these forest service roads but not a motorcycle."

    It's to bad your trip through Maine was so disappointing. Baxter State Park would have been a beautiful ride. A little history. Percival Baxter was "land baron" and governor of Maine. He deeded the land of Baxter to the state for a state park for future gerations to enjoy. The stipulation was that it was to stay "wild", therefore, with the exception of a few access roads for automobiles, nothing could change. Not 100% sure, but i dont believe planes are allowed to fly over it except for emergency use.
    The northern half of the state, which is primarily owned by private logging companies dont allow motorcycles, atv's, horses, or bicycles due to safety reasons. Logging trucks have the right of way AND THEY USE IT.
    Having said that, there are many other fantastic places to ride, dirt or otherwise.
    SAFE RIDING!

    What a bunch of bologna! Why on earth can't you ride on those well maintained dirt roads. As an american it make no sense to me. That's why I hope on your next visit to the USA you'll return to the southwest where there are 1000s of miles of beautiful dirt roads you can ride on your motorcycle. My dirt biking days are in the past but every once in a while I feel that itch to hit the trails on a bike but for now it's my 4x4 pickup witch is still great fun. Your videos are always beautiful and I love the music too. Safe travels!

      Thank you so much! I think in this case it’s due to the logging trucks not wanting to have the responsibility for watching out for too small vehicles - it was really a pitty that day but in the end they can do with their land whatever they like. 😒😒😒

    • @scotmac5965
      @scotmac5965 Рік тому

      Many of those well maintained dirt roads are private roads built by timber companies with their own money. Often, they are occupied by overloaded pulp trucks running at high speeds. With the dust, blind corners, etc motorcycles become a safety issue.

      As said previously, most of Maine is owned by the timber industry. If a road goes thru their property they have the right to "privatize" the road and determine who can use it and when. I learned this in 1972, the first time I rode a motorcycle in Maine, and a police officer showed me the fine print on the Maine road map I picked up when I entered the state.

      Indeed Lea, you seemed frustrated with the situation and heading for the coast was a great idea. The access trail to Mount Katahdin looks to be on a gravel road too. Unless Baxter SP changes that silly rule it's limited access as well. Big Adventure bikes aren't exactly 2 stroke dirtbikes or SxS quads. With a steep 9.8 mile hike I was going to switch out the Forma ADV boots for some Meindl or Asolo hikers, but maybe can save some space in the tail bag 😁 and maybe just see if the '100 mile wilderness ' area in central Maine is a worthy destination.
