    If we presume that bit at the beginning was unedited, he was checking his mirrors every five seconds. You're an ADI, weren't you also taught that you should check your mirrors every five to eight seconds?
    I think perhaps his instructor should have taught using mirrors in pairs, rather than all three together for nominal motion, but he is doing a rapid glance across the mirrors, exactly as he is supposed to for general driving. I wonder if along with an ADI, he was also getting instruction from a friend or family member that has an IAM advanced driver qualification, driving home the regular mirror checks.
    The only comment I would have made (other than learn to use the mirrors in pairs) is that it felt like he was counting seconds. It is possible his own innate sense of time really is that accurate without counting, in which case it wouldn't be distracting him. But if he is counting I'd be recommending he tries to work on just getting a feeling for when to check the mirrors because "about" five to eight seconds feels like it has passed. I'd also perhaps ask him what he is seeing in the mirrors to check that he has been taught to actually look across them, not just make an exaggerated move to indicate mirror checks to the examiner.
    Far too few drivers check their mirrors enough. A lot can change behind you in that five to eight seconds. So many people could have saved themselves from a rear end collision if they maintained their mirror checks when at traffic lights/junctions/in stop-start traffic. The last thing any instructor should be doing is discouraging consistent regular mirror checks.

    • @thebiglebrowski3695
      @thebiglebrowski3695 День тому +1

      From 10:33 to 10:51 he checked his mirrors 6 times. All of them. That is a check every 2 and a half seconds. He was looking at his mirrors more than he was looking at what was in front of him.
      Definitely no need to check every mirror, or even paired mirrors, that frequently. Checking your middle mirror every 5 seconds is one thing but not your wing mirrors as well. The most important place when driving straight is ahead of you. If you aren't moving to either side then there is very little reason to check your side mirrors. What are you possibly looking for? You should check your mirrors when you need to, not just to meet an arbitrary timed requirement. Checking your mirrors how frequently he was doing is definitely causing yourself undue distraction and not focusing on what's ahead. This might stop someone else rear ending you because you know they are there .. but it will probably result in your rear ending someone else because your eyes are never looking at what's ahead.
      Incidentally the one time he really needed to use his mirrors (when moving across lanes on a roundabout), he didn't use them. This is caused by people checking their mirrors to tick a checkbox rather than when they actually need to use them.
      If I was in the car with someone checking their mirrors like this then I would be a nervous wreck and would be getting the bus home pmsl.

    • @damionlee7658
      @damionlee7658 День тому +1

      @@thebiglebrowski3695 the reason to check in pairs is that your rear view mirror is very limited in what it can see. You use the wing mirrors to get a distant view, good for seeing motorcycles, bicycles, the reflection of blue lights on buildings that are often visible before the emergency vehicle they are attached to can be seen in the rear view.
      Wing mirrors also enable you to keep an eye on what is happening on the pavements behind you. Especially important in a modern age where people illegally cycle on (non-bike lane) pavements, illegally use (non-hire, privately owned) electric scooters on pavements and can be travelling faster than the flow of traffic.
      I agree every two seconds is too much.

      The advice given to, and by advanced drivers is (except perhaps by Pin and a few others), you should be checking your mirrors every five to eight seconds (although my motorbike instructor went with five to ten seconds).
      It is usually more effective to use the mirrors in pairs (offside and centre, onside and centre), and not necessarily alternating each check, it depends on what is happening behind.
      In the clip at the beginning, he was checking right on the five second mark. It looks excessive because of the full point mirror checks, rather than paired mirror checks.

      @damionlee7658 2 дні тому

      If the oncoming vehicle has to change speed or road position because the driver attempts to pass a parked vehicle (as was indicated in the video), it is a fault.
      It doesn't matter if you "can" get two vehicles through, it matters if your actions force the unobstructed driver to have to do something to accommodate the obstructed drivers actions.
      Something that the vast majority of drivers magically seem to forget once they get their license... As demonstrated by the attitude so many of them share, "There was plenty of room to get two cars down there".

    • @Ll-ij2jh
      @Ll-ij2jh 2 дні тому

      @@damionlee7658 Nope that’s wrong if there’s enough space for two cars to go down a road safely then you should proceed safely stopping unnecessarily just wastes time. Also causing other cars to slow down isn’t a fault
      Also you’re missing the point it didn’t cause the other driver to do anything & there was a right hand turn box so there was loads of room this is just wasting time, by your logic if your coming down a road with cars on both sides and a car enters that road and slows down to stop to let your proceed this this by your own logic is a fault?

    • @damionlee7658
      @damionlee7658 2 дні тому

      @@Ll-ij2jh are we talking about two different incidents? Pin stated that the oncoming driver (in the white van) slowed down because of the passing of the parked vehicle.
      On the DL25 this will come under judgement.
      Now as for "Being wrong", overtaking a parked car in a manner that causes an oncoming vehicle to slow down or change direction to accommodate your actions, is a failure to observe Highway Code 163, specifically the sixth point:
      "Give way to oncoming vehicles before passing parked vehicles or other obstructions on your side of the road"
      "Give way" has a very specific meaning, which is that you do not advance if doing so would cause another road user (in this case the rule specifies oncoming vehicles) to have to change speed or direction in order to avoid a collision.
      Failure to observe this rule absolutely is a driving fault. Had it occurred a second or so later, and the van driver braked heavily, it would have been deemed a serious, or potentially dangerous fault, and become an immediate failing mark.
      The problem we have is that the vast majority of drivers think like you - that if there is space it is fine to force your way through - even when the oncoming driver has to move to accommodate you. That flies in the face of the best practice advice in the Highway Code, and ignores the most basic principal of sharing the road. Forcing drivers around you to accommodate your actions by getting out of your way is not sharing the road, it is trying to dominate the road.

    • @damionlee7658
      @damionlee7658 2 дні тому

      Right, we were talking about two different incidents, but the second one (passing the van with the right turn box at about 5:08) is still a poor judgement call.
      He was far too close to the parked vehicle, and nobody had any safety margin to move within. It ignores point 1 of Rule 163 (not getting too close to the vehicle), and point 4 (move quickly past the vehicle).
      Squeezing through a small gap because you think there is just enough room also ignores the likelihood of startling the oncoming driver. Edit to add, I've watched it several times, and the oncoming driver seems to be further from the lane divider as they leave camera shot than before the pass. Which suggests they were uncomfortable with the distance, and felt they had to move to make more space. This again brings us back to the give way issue. If the oncoming driver reasonably changes speed or direction because of your action when passing, it absolutely is a driving fault.

      Should have seen plenty, providing they were real mirror checks and not just a movement made to suggest mirror checks to an examiner. Mirror checks while driving in a normal motion should be very brief glances to maximise time viewing ahead. From that glance you should be able to tell if there is something that needs closer attention.
      With practice, those brief glances become enough to be able to accurately identify an approximate number of vehicles behind, their direction of travel, type of vehicles (motorbike, car, bus etc), and closing rate. This is because with appropriate checks every five to eight seconds, you are (should be) building up a picture of what is behind you.
