  • This is a polymer clay tutorial for a monarch butterfly cane using a skinner blend (I have another technique as well, for another video!) Monarch butterflies are probably one of the most recognisable and striking butterflies in the world and I really wanted to capture the beauty of this butterfly in clay.
    You will need orange, yellow, black and white clay - I use premo sculpey but there are plenty of different brands out there. I also use a pasta machine for most of my blends, you can use a roller if you prefer.
    UPDATE - this video has really blown up!! I hope it's helped people make some of these wonderful butterflies and dip their toe into the fantastic world of polymer clay!! xoxoxox

      That's incredibly kind. Thank you so much - caning can be such a tricky concept to try and put into words sometimes!!

      @@MidnightButterflyDesigns Aww. thank you for replying. I spent TWO days on that bottom wing. I finally gave up & decided my butterfly would be happy to wear a leaf for a wing. It looks like a leaf. Upsetting. Tje top wing looks ok. How on earth were you able to cut the curvy lines with an Exacto knife? Pure 100% MAGIC. Thank you again for sharing such a great tutorial,...you did a wonderful job. I know it's time consuming & a lot of work. Cheers. I adore your accent.

      @@ameswho9548 I'm sure it came out great! Sometimes, if you don't have a big bendy blade, if you cut a straight line and the shape the clay gently on both sides (so it matches when you put it back together) you can get a similar effect. 💙

    Honestly, the best Monarch Butterfly tutorial I've seen! Thank you so much for this! Could you maybe also teach us how to reduce these butterfly wings? They're quite an unusual shape to reduce. x

    Thank you much, the butterfly is beautiful. I’ve made long skinner blends so I’m confused as to how to run this one thru the pasta machine. It would be nice to actually see you running thru the machine. The visual running thru the machine would be very helpful.
    Are you always folding the skinner blends with same colors touching and always putting it into the pasta machine fold facing down?

    • @MidnightButterflyDesigns
      @MidnightButterflyDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      With Skinner blends you must always fold the same way and always put in the pasta machine fold first. If you turn the clay and fold, you'll end up just mixing ALL the colours together. Hope that helps!

    What kind of varnish u use? Is water based polyurethane varnish good for air dry polymer clay?

    • @MidnightButterflyDesigns
      @MidnightButterflyDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      I'll be honest - I don't tend to varnish mine, but when I do I use a water based polyurethane. Oil based varnishes will react with polymer clay so just be aware that any varnish needs to be water based. Also, pro tip, apply a couple of very thin layers. This will minimise bubbles 💙

    The black i have dyes my hand and transfer on to other colors which black should I use

    • @MidnightButterflyDesigns
      @MidnightButterflyDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      I would use a baby wipe or (more sustainable option) a cloth with some baby oil on to remove the residue between dark and light colours. I do this, it's just I don't show it on the tutorials :)

    How do you reduce the shape to make it small? just keep pinching?

    • @MidnightButterflyDesigns

      Essentially yes! Have a look for "reducing polymer clay canes" on UA-cam - it takes a little work but it's worth it 😊 good luck!!

    Dang it, I've been trying to see how to reduce a cane with an odd shape, all I've found are round ones
