    Eight hours ago I started to replace the hinges on two top hung double glazed windows, Trying to do the hinges individually was a nightmare and as you can imagine I got very stuck.
    Then I watched your video and 15 minutes later they were both in and functioning perfectly.
    Sir you are indeed a living legend thank you so much.
    An outstanding presentation. And I can’t get that song out of my head now so thanks for that.
    kindest regards Robert.

      Thanks for watching Robert and for your kind remarks. Surprised me how such a simple looking job could get so complicated. Meanwhile a couple of correspondents suggested removing the double glazing panel first - which would make the frame about 90% lighter to handle. Wish I knew that before I started! Cheers b33zo

    Hi b33zo, I just wanted to thank you for posting this video, it helped me a lot today when fitting new hinges onto my kitchen window. As I had never done this job before, I made a right mess of it and destroyed a hinge. I watched your video and popped to screwfix for a new pair. Mine were riveted into place so drilled them out. Fitted the new hinge to the window using self tapping screws, had my mate lift the window into place and screwed it to the frame, took 30 mins. Your video and instructions were easy to follow and so helpful, no longer have a cold drafty kitchen! Thanks again, Jonny.

      Thanks for watching Jonny and for your kind remarks. Who could have thought that this job could be so complicated?! Hi John, this vid has been up for a while so this comment is for the benefit of DIY'ers using this as reference.
    The hinges you removed where in fact 17mm stack height. By leaving the packers out the hinges will be misshapen, under stress and likely fail early. I've seen these fitted incorrectly and the stress pulls/strips the top screw holes in the frame.
    When you offered it back up and it seemed tight, that is correct. By opening the window/hinges fully this allows hinge flex to pop or pry the frame side of the hinge into what's known as the euro groove/channel. I hope this makes sense. All the best.

    • @b33zo
      @b33zo  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching Neil and leaving some helpful advice. Yes, it looks like I was too hasty in deciding the window wouldn't fit with the 17mm stack - partly to do with the weight while holding it in place to make that decision. If I had taken the glass panel out first (as several people later suggested) I might have successfully located the frame and hinges into the euro groove. Another DIY lesson learned.
      Cheers b33zo ps my wife later shaved most of my hair off..

    What about when the window sash is out, measure the width from hinge to hinge before removing, that way, you know what overall width you're working to. Nice honest demonstration too btw 👍

      Thanks for watching Pete. Yes, I get your point. You would think this would be an hour job max but unless you get the same hinge kit it gets well complicated (rather like marrying up non-matching guttering). As someone once said; you always learn more when things go wrong.

    Just to confirm, when you say "left" on the hinge, that is left from the perspective of looking in the window from the outside? Also, since the hinge coming off was 17mm, how come making it the same size with the spacers was too big, but it fiitted on being 13mm?

    • @b33zo
      @b33zo  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. 'Left' in this case is from inside the roome. The hinges are clearly marked with a 'L' and an arrow showing direction of opening. The fittings include spacers just incase you need them. b33zo

    • @b33zo
      @b33zo  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Mark. I think the answer is yes and yes. The stack height is still 13mm or 17mm and the width 18mm so they should fit okay. Give yourself twice as long to do the job as your best guess on a finishing time. ATB b33zo

    I have a broken hinge similar to your demonstration. However, the hinges are not screwed to the UPVC frames. I'd describe them as riveted with flat rivets with a small hole in the middle. Have you come across these fixing? The windows are old of course. Do the rivets need to be drilled out and if so, do they need to be re-riveted back again, that's assuming the holes line up with the new hinges? Any information is appreciated. Nice video btw.

    • @b33zo
      @b33zo  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching denbyish. The concertina mechanism is held together with rivet type fixings but the whole hinge is screwed to the white plastic. So no drilling or re-riveting required. When you take the screws out on the frame side of the window the window and hinges come out complete.
      Someone made a useful suggestion that if you remove the beads and take out the double glazed glass the 'window' become much lighter and easier to handle. Wish I had done that!
      Give yourself plenty of time - on a warm, dry day.

      Hello again... For the benefit of other readers, my hinge (concertina mechanism) is riveted together, but the hinge is additionally riveted to the PVC frame, with aluminium rivets. I looked online and the general method of removal is to drill out the rivets and to use fresh rivets where the frame holes line up (with the new hinge) and screws where they don't. I leave a link which may be of use to other viewers who have this type of hinge fitting. Thank you for your reply.

      @@dembydish Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is another thing altogether. I would drill out the rivets to remove the window. If the new hinge holes don't line up it might be to your advantage as fitting screws is likely be easier than re-riveting. There's nothing to stop you drilling out fresh fixing holes in the concertina mechanism either. Lets us know how you get on.
      Good luck b33zo
