I had the surgery in 2002 and that guy isn't lying. He knows what he's talking about.
Thing you may not fully appreciate is how complicated this kind of procedure is and how complicated it makes your life.
I have back issues, but multiple issues that are tricky to identify and source. The surgery hasn't been around long so think of owning a new kind of complicated car. If it has issues, it's hard to figure them all out and there are fewer people who are remotely qualified.
There are thousands of spinal conditions (unrelated to this procedure) that are hard to diagnose and treat properly. With the procedure, these conditions get incredibly hard to resolve.
This has meant chronic back discomfort/pain that no one has an answer for. A bunch of blind guesses.
I wish I knew about these kinds of specialists back in 2002.

They recommended I get spinal fusion surgery at 15 (±25 years ago) without any attempt at other treatment, since I had angles above 50 when diagnosed with scoliosis. Declined surgery because of how awful it sounded, and they still didn't recommend any other treatment, leaving me to think, "Well, it's going to get worse and there's nothing I can do about it." - At least, nothing that doesn't have a good chance of making things worse.

I have 20 degree curvature had scoliosis since I was born I can tell you I have lots of discomfort now that I am 43yrs old have back and knee soreness and hips sometimes pain wish I could get my spine straightened out! Looking into surgery I know some people write this off as mild scoliosis had people tell me to walk it off living with it is enough to want you to get the surgery! Having no scoliosis is always the better option for me!

My daughter has just developed a very pronounced curve to her back. Her pediatrician will not comment. Was referred to getting an X-ray. That was followed up with a referral to children mercy in Kansas City. That’s two months out. Just not being given any professional interpretation is a frustration in itself. My daughter entered early puberty shortly after she turned ten. In most likelihood her growth plates will fuse and she will stop growing taller. Hopefully we get this under control soon and manageable.

No thank you for surgery. I go to a chiropractor and PT I feel that PT helps but not like my chiropractor. Actually PT tends to aggravate my back and it doesn't get better sometimes for a week when it's time for another PT appointment. I also wear a non constrictive back support recommended by my chiropractor. That helps too and I try and do my excercising.

I've wondered if chiropractic might help. I had a Harrington Rod, T2-T12 in 1981. Now, because I've been having weakness in my lower back and sharp, stabbing pain, I had x-rays done of the lumbar spine. Oh, my! My spine juts rather severely to the left at the L1 vertebrae and makes a nasty U turn back to the sacral spine. I'm at the point where I don't leave my house due to pain and weakness. Very difficult. Your explanations are very good. Thank you!

My name is Angelina, and I am an 18-year-old working student. I am writing to you today with a heartfelt plea for help regarding my medical condition.
Several years ago, I was diagnosed with dextro-levoscoliosis 44° & 48°, a condition that has caused my spine to curve, leading to significant physical discomfort and limitations in my daily life. As time has passed, my condition has worsened, and my doctors have recommended scoliosis surgery as the best course of action to prevent further complications and improve my quality of life.
Unfortunately, my family and I are facing severe financial constraints, making it impossible for me to afford the necessary surgery on my own. As a working student, I have been doing my best to contribute to our household and support my mother, who has a mental disability and relies on my care. However, the costs of the surgery and ongoing medical care are overwhelming, leaving us in a desperate situation.
I am reaching out to you, not only as a last resort but also with the hope that your kindnessg and generosity may extend a helping hand to someone in need. Your support, no matter how big or small, would make an enormous difference in my life, allowing me to undergo the scoliosis surgery and regain my health and mobility.
If you find it in your heart to assist me in this journey, any financial contribution or resources you can offer will be sincerely appreciated. Additionally, if you know of any organizations or charities that could provide aid to individuals in my situation, I would be grateful for any information you can share.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message and considering my request for help. Your support would not only impact my life but also the lives of my family members, as it would relieve the burden on them and ensure I can continue caring for my mother while focusing on my recovery.
If you require any further information or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at 09455865621 or angelinabarnido0125@gmail. Om. I am more than willing to provide any necessary documentation or additional details.
Once again, thank you for your compassion and understanding. I hope that, with your assistance, I can overcome this obstacle and look forward to a brighter and healthier future.
    Warm regards,
    Angelina Salazar Barnido

Hello. Thank-You so much for this video! It’s very informative!
I am a 52 year old woman who had Harrington rods inserted in 1980, when I was 10 years old. I never had any pain before the surgery… not until I got pregnant at age 25. Now, I am in pain 24/7 to some degree. I can’t stand at the sink for more 5 minutes at a time. I also now have flat back syndrome. I have a very hard time walking further than a block. It’s so frustrating being in pain all the time.
I still have 2 massive curves, and grew 3” during surgery.
I just wish that I could accept my health conditions.
    Thank-You for letting me vent

omg. Did they really tell you to have the best life you can until you can't walk and THEN they will operate? Like Jesus christ. You have severe scoliosis and honestly surgery may be your best option at this point, reversing it, even if it works a bit wont be enough to reduce your curvature enough. You need to see a new spine doctor and honestly report the one who told you that when you can't walk they will operate on you. Scoliosis at that magnitude can impact your heart, lungs, other major organs, it can limit the amount of room your heart has to beat and lungs to breath in which can lead to fatality or damage to your major organs. It also reduces the flow of cerebral fluid going to your brain and the worse your curve is, the slower that fluid moves and the slower it goes to your brain which is the fluid inside your skull that keeps your brain functioning. It can cause mental problems if it doesn't move fast enough and there are so much other risks to your entire health and not just your spine. If you can't walk anymore because of your scoliosis chances are after surgery you may never walk again. Don't do that to yourself. Get a new doctor to assess you.

My daughter is 14 and her degree last we checked was 37. When I look at her back, I feel sad and want her to have as normal life as possible. She always asks me to massage her back because she aches. The doctor seems to want to stay away from surgery at this point, but I want a good quality of life, both physically and ecstatically. Are surgery's done at 37 to 40 degrees? Is the decision based partly on insurance companies? I'm not sure what my next move should be.

@@eyedee203 i’ve recently done the spine surgery and from what my doctors told me, surgery is only considered for degrees above 45, so i personally think 37 degrees is actually a pretty safe zone. i have had a back brace for 6 years and i have to say it definitely would’nt improve the curve but it helps to slow down the worsening of the curve. even though my degree was at 60 before the surgery, my body was still relatively symmetrical with the help of the brace and when i was wearing the brace, my backaches was a lot better since the brace served as a support for my back. personally i think your daughter’s condition is still considered rather optimistic so perhaps try to wear the back brace for longer hours for now before her grow spurt ends which is when the spine would more or less be stable already. im not professional but hope this helps☺️

Standing for house hold chores or small walks 😢cause me pain. 12 years ago I had a laminectomy for the lower back and that took away pain I was having down my left leg for a long time but now the pain is back and I’m considering fusion surgery. I have had shots in the back, Chiroprator care for years and physical therapy but my pain has become worse. If I get fusion surgery will it take away my general back pain and allow me to be able to walk better and function normally again? I have watched videos about spinal fusion surgery both pro’s and co’s. Any insight would be helpful. Julie

I've had 4 lumbar fusions and 2 cervical fusions due to nerve impingements. Currently I have new nerve impingements in my cervical and lumbar/sciatic areas. My neurosurgeon sent me to a scoliosis specialist in his office. The scoliosis specialist stated that I am beyond his capability and that the hospital that I had my other fusions, is not equipped for what I need. He has referred me to Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital is St. Louis, Mo.
Scoliosis is not causing my pain, nor has it ever. It has been nerve impingements. Impingements mat be your issue as well.

I had Harrington rods put in but with screws all the way down. I got 2 of these surgeries. One before puberty and one 2 years later because my curve was not correcting itself. I was 13 & 15 I believe. I’m not 29 and have severe pain and degeneration, a lot of nerve pain with trapped nerves, “disc” herniations they tell me almost all of them are herniated. I have the worst trouble since the second surgery. The first one I was actually ok. But the more time goes on the more I can’t do anything! It’s terrible! I had a severe curve, way over 60%.. I want to say around 80/85% curve if I remember correctly.

I can't consult my doctor due to the severe covid crisis in our locality . Actually I can't even tell my parents about the same because they will get worried so terribly and will berate me for my carelessness. What can I do now Sir? Will exercising from now works? You should tell your parents you think your back has worsened. I was negligent towards doing exercises for my spine because they hurt me a lot and I couldn't physically do most of them because of my spine. I have a rotated spine along with my scoliosis which is likely why its harder for me to do them. The ones I could do just never seemed to do anything so I stopped doing them. My dad wasn't happy with my decision to stop as he was the one who advocated it over my chance for surgery and he was more towards doing the exercises to help it instead of surgery. But he understood my reasons for doing what I did and because hes my dad he still was supportive of me, hes in full support of me getting surgery right now as my spine has gotten worse and the amount of pain i am in and the things I can no longer do really bother him. I can't even go to the movie theaters. I have a 47 upper spine curvature and an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow.
I know this response is late but in my experience of dealing with scoliosis for so many years and being told so many things, you should let your parents know about it and request a scoliosis x-ray from your doctor. The x-ray will tell if your back has worsened and if you don't already have a spine doctor, you should be referred to one who will look at your x-ray and go over options with you. Don't be afraid to tell your doctor how you feel about his or her suggestions if you feel like you wont be able to do them or if you lack hope in them. The doctor will listen to your concerns and work with you on what they think is best for you.
When I think my spine may have gotten worse I get an x-ray and get looked at. My next appointment is over the phone instead of a clinic visit. My x-ray along with what I wrote to my surgeon will tell him what he needs to know at the moment and if he thinks he needs to examine my back he will, but he may not need to. I'm hoping to get surgery as I've had scoliosis for so long and its been my Achilles heel the whole time and nothing else i've done has helped it.
It's important to let your parents and doctor know when you have concerns, your curvature may not be in the range that surgery is going to be an option for you yet, but you should have annual x-rays to watch for progression because if it keeps progressing the only real way to stop it from progressing is to have surgery. It's not as bad as it used to be. When I was told on the details of how they would operate on me when my spine was a little worse than yours is, they told me they would use small, flexible bars that a durable and fix the curvature by lining my spine up and putting small flexible (forgetting the name of the material the bars are made of) bars in my spine which reduce risks that long metal bars give you and still allow me to have regular spinal movement and mobility. This type of metal they use lasts forever and because they aren't long bars they don't have the same risk factor of causing long term problems. The risk of things going wrong were so minimal that the only real risk that I would face was the risk everyone gets when they are cut open.
Spine surgery has evolved and its not as risky and dangerous as it used to be. It doesn't mean you should try to get it and ignore other options provided to you either. From my experience, you can live normally with a 35 or 38 degree spine curvature, it is just important to watch for progression and keep your concerns updated with your family and your doctor so they can do the best possible thing for you. Don't fear your parents reaction, they love you and want you to be okay. I just don't think i fully can trust a place with a website named "scoliosisreductioncenter" which is why I decided to write you a detailed comment on this subject. I don't trust facilities that aren't apart of a real medical facility. People have a habit of treating one persons scoliosis the same as they treat and view everyone's scoliosis and when I first started struggling with scoliosis, that was what I experienced, being treated like my scoliosis was the same as every other persons scoliosis. I was told I wasn't participating in physical therapy when I told my physical therapist I couldn't physically get into the positions I was requested to do, I tried my best to do it, but it hurt and my body wouldn't move that way. 5 years after that they discovered my spine was rotated. Roto-scoliosis is what they call it where i'm from. Different places coin different names for it but its basically when you have vertebra that rotate in different directions instead of following one direction likely based on the severity of your spinal curve forcing your vertebrea to rotate with it. My vertebrae rotate in different directions making my scoliosis more painful and harder to live with.
So the best thing you can do is have a spine doctor go over an x-ray and talk to you about what can be done. Not all spine doctors are good for that as they are all really just spine surgeons, they know more about operating on a person than they do in the details of scoliosis and can sometimes have poor judgement and only look at your spine as a "should i operate on this or no?" instead of helping you manage it. They are orthopedic specialists and don't always know everything you can expect them to know about scoliosis itself vs the other orthopedic problems they handle as well, so if you don't feel like the spine doctor understands what you are going through its always okay to get a different one. I did, the one I had for years was unable to even properly trace my spine with his finger and was also a bad spine surgeon to start with. I have a new one who literally understands everything I need him to and is good at his job. That's all you need to do. Sorry for the long read, I'm just trying to be as informative and helpful as I can be at 6am.

No. I've had 4 lumbar fusions, l2-s1. I can not bend as I used to, and struggle to clean myself after a bowel movement. I have cerebral palsy, and scoliosis associated with the spasticity from the CP. My problems have been from nerve impingements, not the scoliosis. A competent surgeon with an MRI or myelogram can determine what will help you.

I would never consider surgery, I have DDD and won’t have surgery on my spine for that, I was told years ago I had Scoliosis but never told at what degree so lately I’ve been having more back pain and it’s been different so I’m wondering if the scoliosis has progressed. I'm following watching ur video related to how to stop progression. I'm scared now..

This honestly makes me feel so hopeless, I’ve went 3 years being sent to tons of doctors due to tons of different pains and I figured it out on my own. I have 52.6 lumbar curve with disc degeneration between l4 and s1
I have pelvic pain, IBS due to it, sharp pain in my sides and pulling on adhesion’s from abdominal surgeries, back fatigue, unable to bend if I do more than 5 activities with no heavy lifting a day. I do yoga 3 times week to stretch things out. Basically, my spine is debilitating if I function at a normal pace. Is there any hope for me after surgery?

Guess they don't actually answer your questions. As someone who has had injections for pain in my spine, I can tell you what I know, if that helps. They use corticosteroid steriods to give injections for pain. For me they used Cortisol, they also use epidural. Cortisol gave me relief for up to 3 to 6 months and the person doing the injection didn't want me to do it because he figured I was using it as a form of pain treatment. When I told him it was a one time thing to see if it helped and wasn't planning on making it a habit he was more than happy to do the injection for me. There is a reason he hesitated on doing it. If you keep getting the injections it can really fuck you up beyond repair and damage a huge part of your quality of life, for the rest of your life. It's something you'd only want to do rarely. They don't inject you with anything that wont fuck you up from doing it as a long term thing or form of pain treatment. That's just the honesty behind the injections. Hope it helped.

I have cerebral palsy, and scoliosis. I hurt my back in 1989, had my 1st steroid injection in 1990 into my lumbar area. I got relief for about 9 months. I got my 2nd injection, and the it helped for about 3 months. I got a 3rd injection, and the relief lasted about 4 weeks. I've had many more injections throughout the year with varying levels of relief albeit very temporary. This has caused osteoporosis. I would not recommend steroid injections for 3 reasons. 1. cost, 2. length of relief, 3. osteoporosis.
