This is always a concern of mine, too. There’s some comfort, though, in that by the time the used product reaches the septic tank, it’s very diluted by subsequent flushes and any water flow afterward. Regardless, whether we use sanitizers/disinfectors or not, our septic systems’ beneficial flora are under constant siege. Ugh! I was really rooting for the baking soda, vinegar, and tea tree oil as I’ve been trying to go more natural with some of my cleaning. Oh, well! The results don’t lie!! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into these experiments!!!!
Baking soda & vinegar cancel each other out. So the only active ingredient is tea tree oil. Nothing effective about that. I wish ppl would stop mixing those 2 ingredients. You have to use them separately.
@@FieldOfFocus I watched another youtube video testing vinegar on bacteria under the microscope and it wiped them out instantly but mixed with baking soda it didn’t kill any. It seems so simple and obvious now but none of us think of it when we see it foaming up and must be cleaning a bunch. Vinegar kills bacteria because it’s an acid and it destroys the bacteria’s bodies. Baking soda is basic so when mixed with vinegar it actually changes the ph of it which defeats the purpose of using an acid disinfectant.
Correct! They cause a chemical reaction that converts them into water and salt (with a little bit of heat). This neutralizes any real benefits either would have given separately. They both work really well separately though! Maybe try just vinegar, some dish soap and essential oils for your testing if you haven't already.
Greta video, appreciate you using my suggestion. Clorox performed as expected but I do wonder if increasing the set time to match the clorox gel would provide similar results. If you do any stain remover experiments in the future it'd be interesting to see how products like Shout, Fels-Naptha, laundry detergent, and similar compare. Keep it up 👍
Agreed about the bleach. I can mess around with times etc. oooh stain removers... I have not considered testing those! I will be on the lookout for my family to stain some clothes!! hahaha!!!!
1 thing I learned with Pine Sol is there are different ones. I believe she used Pine Sol Cleaner. If you want to Disinfect you need to get the one that says Disinfectant. Otherwise it's just a cleaner.
Hello! I used the Original Pine Sol Mutli-Surface Cleaner which states it kills 99.9% of germs on the front of the label. There are many different Pine Sol products, but for this test I started with the original. I do hope to circle back and test other Pine Sol products at some point. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’m curious how well the Clorox toilet wand cleans alone as well as scrubbing bubbles toilet cleaner. Thank you so much for showing how these cleaners work in a home environment! ❤️

In regards to the Lysol being sudsy. The more suds something has the less likely the said thing is being cleaned. It has something to do with surfactants.
Hi! Love your videos! When they say "empty the bowl," I think they mean to remove all standing water, which is easily accompanied by pouring water from a bucket into the bowl, then use the cleaner.
Wow! So interesting. I love Pine Sol for it's smell. When I clean the toilets I spray with Clorox first then I go in with some Pine Sol by spraying on a cloth and wipng down. But when I'm out of Clorox I do tend to just use PineSol thinking it does remove bacteria. I really thought Pine Sol would be effective as it leaves a very fresh feel after cleaning. Thank you this video has given me knowledge on what to stick to!!!
When the Lysol says to empty the toilet bowel, I think it might be saying to push the water down the drain with the brush, use quick pushing motions like you are using a plunger. My mom taught me to clean the bowl this way. This makes less water in the bowl, the cleaner will be more concentrated, the water level will be lower so you have higher concentration at the normal water level where the infamous water ring sits and since the Lysol had a high sudsy action with the water, it will not suds as much with less water.
Your videos are addictive. I can’t stop watching them. If you haven’t already done them can you do one for hardwood floor and or carpets? 1 bleach. I work at a group home . One of our dudes tend to play with his poop and spreads it about the house. Also he doesn’t like to pull up his brief and will self soil any chance he gets. I seem to be the only one who’s grossed out with especially because he has roommates who I have to look out for as well. 2- zep? Unless you r already done one. I’ll look it up. They buy a lot of zep products. 3. Also how effective is boiling the mop heads or cleaning rags? And do you have a video on how effective hot water cyle to rinse out laundry that have fecal bacteria . Thank you so much for these experiments. I can’t tell you how much they have helped but they have. 🙏
Hi there! I am so glad you are enjoying my videos!! Currently in my home I do not have hardwood floor, we have laminate plank, vinyl, and I have one room with carpet. I haven't explored carpet cleaning yet. I haven't done any bleach tests yet but It is on my list! Zep I have done just the Zep Toilet bowl cleaner and have a few others on my list. Boiling Mop Heads and Rags, I have not tested yet.. But I do have a laundry playlist that you might be interested in. I haven't tested fecal bacteria per se. I test what my home has around it as normal flora bacteria. I haven't deliberately soiled an area with fecal matter and cleaned it. Thank you so very much for watching! I appreciate your support!
Great video - and now among my favorites in your series! Your results really opened my eyes about the power of Clorox bleach and their toilet bowl cleaner. A few months ago, I bought a 6-pack of Lysol’s Power Clinging Gel, and will have to use it up first. Though you didn’t test the product I have, maybe because I typically clean twice, it’s ok. I’d love to test my own home, so want to buy my own petri dishes. Amazon sells many, but the pre-agared ones are tiny and have complaints. May I ask where you buy yours?

kinda sad pine sol got the rep but then I remembered that I use that pine sol for surface cleaning and not toilet bowl cleaning, I use that Clorox toilet bowl cleaner on mine so I feel good about that. when using the incubator how long do I set the Petri dish in it for, i wanna do this around my house. also do you wet the cotton swab then swab the area or swab it dry then wet the end? I'll ask this on a few more videos because im very excited to do this
Hey there! When using the incubator, the dishes usually need 24-72 to get good enough bacterial growth for me to evaluate. I leave the light on all day, but I do shut it off at night. I check the dishes a few times a day. I do not wet the cotton swab before or after sampling the area. I am really glad you are enjoying my videos! Thank you for watching and thanks for the questions!
Not sure if someone else has asked/mentioned but I've been reading that mixing dr bronners or baking powder (basic ph level) with vinegar (acidic ph) will neutralize the cleaning ability. I'm wondering if you know or could test them separately or if you think there's validity to it? Thanks a bunch, these videos are awesome
I LOVE your videos!!!! Thank you so much for your work. I'm getting ready to have a marathon of your videos lol ! Do you have a similar video for the outside of the toilet and other bathroom fixtures like the sink, tub, etc?
I haven't made a compilation video for other areas except the Kitchen Counter. I do hope this summer to have a little time to create more compilations. Thanks for watching and for your support!
Love the scientific method - thanks for sharing your work! I am curious about Scentsy’s counter cleaner - I love it and hoping it’s true about forming a dirt-repelling barrier on sealed surfaces
great content! could you also share how you clean/sanitize the toilet brushes (products and methods used) and test it on petri dish? I have always wondered if it's in fact possible to sanitize the tools used in toilet cleaning. thanks!
What about the multi purpose Lysol cleaner lemon scent .. You can use it on counters, floors, bathroom cleaningvetc. You mix some in a spray bottle with water.
SERIOUSLY! I used to just squirt some and scrub... but measuring showed me I never used the recommended amount. A bottle would last me months... but if I used 6oz... no way.. 4 uses.
I live in a rural area with septic and well and very hard water. I've tried various toilet cleaners and for me, the miracle cleaner is to dump a bunch of bleach into the toilet, close the lid and leave it for a while. Afterward, when flushed, the toilet is sparkling clean, even the rings and inside of the lids are spotless. I guess the fumes from the bleach make it unnecessary to brush the surfaces. I haven't tried testing for bacteria and am not sure what this does to my septic and the groundwater, but it sure does clean. Love bleach for toilets, but do you approve? xoxo
I also have a septic, and while I am newish to septic systems, I do my best to not use bleach in large amounts down the drain. I break out the bleach only when there is a stomach bug in the house!
@@FieldOfFocus Thanks for your input. I was just informed we don't have a septic, which was a surprise for me. Can bleach be bad for the environment in general, then? I only do this deep clean about once a month. I love your channel!
I just wonder how long that bowl will stay disinfected and what difference it makes on health? My guess is that with the exponential rate of growth bacteria will return to previous level within a few days. My guess is that as long as there is no visible slime layer in the toilet sanitizing your toilet is unimportant at home. In a hospital or public setting transmission of disease may be important. I have always found that tim to be discussing and hard to clean. I would concentrate my efforts in that area.
I haven't tested the return of bacteria yet, but it is on my list of things to test. Thank you for watching and commenting. I am hoping to conduct more toilet testing this summer.
Goodness, one company has 3 types of tb cleaners, not sure if that's good or bad! It seems so weird there would be a "power" version. Like, who would consciously want to only half a.. clean their toilet bowl. Crazy.
Hello, watching you from France. Your videos are very interesting. Just one question : don't you think flushing the toilets brings back bacteria from the reservoir ? Bonne continuation ! ☺️
Hello!! Thank you for watching my videos! I do think it is possible if there is bacteria in the tank to have that get back into the toilet. I think that is too hard for me to remove when conducting these tests. I guess I could flush with distilled water, but that really wouldn't be real world testing. But yes it is possible that some bacteria might be inherently in the toilet tank. Thank you so much for watching!!!!!
What types of DIY recipes are you interested in? There are a lot of DIY recipes out there! I am unfamiliar with the DIY dawn powerwash hack, could you tell me what that is?
@@FieldOfFocus Thank you for your response. Dawn Powerwash is a very popular cleaner. If you search UA-cam, you will see there are lots of homemade recipes for cheaper refills. Maybe you could test the Dawn product with one of the dyi recipes. Thanks again.
I kinda feel the Pinesol test was not right. Pinesol days on the back that it only disinfects full strength. You can't add water and toilets have water in them.
Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦 Learning a lot by binge watching your videos! Thank you for taking the time to do all of this tedious work and sharing your results. One thing I've always wondered is .....why do you leave water in the toilet when cleaning it? I've always emptied some water from a bucket in the bowl to remove most of the water before cleaning. In my mind the water is diluting the product.
Leaving the water in the toilet... so I try to follow label instruction as the manufacturer writes them.. If they say empty the bowl, then I get my red solo cup and empty it.. If they don't, then I don't. Plus I think most people don't or won't bother emptying the water before cleaning. So it is a realistic view of cleaning. I try to just follow whatever the manufacturer suggests for my testing! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
@@FieldOfFocus Thanks so much for responding. I should have picked up on that. Grey matter is getting old and sluggish. Have you ever used Spray Nine as a household cleaner/disinfectant? Right now, I use a brand name toilet bowl cleaner but with prices rising on all products, I've been searching for a cheaper Dollar Tree product. In my research, people have used shaving cream as a cleaner and disinfectant due to shaving cream having alcohol in it. Can you possibly do a clean test to see if it's worth the switch.
Interesting. I have never heard of using shaving cream as a cleaner and disinfectant! I have done testing on 91% alcohol (video on my channel) so you can see how that works. I will put it on my list of suggestions! Thank you!
When I was young and dinosaurs still roamed the earth, both my mother and grandmother taught me to clean the toilet bowl with a combination of regular household bleach (about a half cup) along with a bit of laundry detergent (about a quarter cup--and remember, back then it wasn't super concentrated like it is today). I wonder if the addition of detergent to the household bleach would give it any extra oomph for the purpose of disinfection. Inasmuch as the straight bleach already does a reasonably good job, I suspect the detergent that my mother was adding might be the difference between straight bleach and the specialty Clorox product.
Wondering if you could try a diluted mix of water and pine-sol or of any cleaner with the strength of its potency on the first day of diluting the cleaner compared to the same diluted mix several days later? I know bleach mix with water only lasts for 24 hours but I was wondering how long the same could be said with other water diluted cleaners as I use pine-sol and fabuloso in a spray bottle mix with water but I can’t help to empty it everyday and renew it everyday just to make sure it is doing its job.
This is the second of your videos I've watched. Thanks for your efforts to inform your viewers about cleaning products' effectiveness. I wonder what the results of testing Lysol toilet bowl cleaner with Bleach rather than with hydrogen peroxide would be? I'm guessing the result would be similar to the Clorox with bleach product you tested. Comparing Clorox with bleach formula with Lysol with hydrogen peroxide seems like an apples and oranges comparison; comparing Clorox with bleach and Lysol with bleach seems like a better comparison (apples to apples). Thoughts?
Love your videos. Can you do one where you create a "cinnamon soup" and apply it to the toilet bowl? I am also wondering if flushing has some kind of effect, maybe the toilet tank water has bacteria which is countereffective to cleaning?
Could you explain what the cinnamon soup is?? Flushing rinses away the cleaners, and I see it as a control because that is something that I cannot change. I have tested my water many times for bacteria and haven't found any yet. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@FieldOfFocus You are most welcome. Okay by cinnamon soup I refer to some way to make cinnamon a liquid, in order to test its effect on bacteria. I would like to know the effect of cinnamon on bacteria. And, do you have any videos showing the effect of various detergents, including all natural detergents?
I did test Cinnamon Essential Oil in this video "Can Essential Oils Stop Bacteria from Growing on a Petri dish? " ua-cam.com/video/PLgn-U50aLM/v-deo.html As for various and natural detergents, I do have a Laundry Playlist.. and I am adding to that as time goes on. Is there any particular natural detergent you have in mind?
@@FieldOfFocus Good video but I would like to see just pure cinnamon particles in some kind of soup. Also, the video seems to show the oil applied to a petri dish, but your other videos seem to show a sample added to a dish after cleaning a surface with a solution. I would like to see the cinnamon soup applied in a manner consistent with the other videos of yours I've watched. The other reason I request a cinnamon soup is because I am cautious about essential oils. A white paper I read suggests that the science behind essential oils haven't had time to form yet, and to exercise caution. For instance, I used to haphazardly sprinkle Peppermint essential oil at random, to try to improve air quality. But after a while I started to notice a new foul odor, and I concluded that the odor was from the peppermint oil becoming rancid. As for natural detergents, I would like to see ones commonly available for purchase, so I can see which one best fits my needs. Detergents I am looking for are ones which are healthy to breathe in and good for the skin, ideally the detergent's residue should have a pH of 5.5.
The Lysol test wasn't conducted properly. She didn't squirt it under the rim. That's why you have to use the bottle. She also rubbed the swab over the top of the toilet which hadn't been cleaned. The same with the last cleaner. I'd like to see this redone properly with control of application and swabbing only inside the bowl.

You're supposed to sprinkle baking soda on the toilet then spray the vinegar , the cleaning is all in the chemical reaction with adding baking soda and vinegar together, when you let that chemical reaction dissipate its not real that effective
Hey there! Thanks for watching! Yes, normally that is what I would think to do also, however I was following the instructions from Woman's World Website.. www.womansworld.com/posts/home/essential-oil-toilet-bowl-cleaner-122479 "Essential Oil Toilet Bowl Cleaner Ingredients 1 cup white vinegar 1/2 cup baking soda 20 drops tea tree essential oil Instructions To make your cleaner, place all ingredients in a spray bottle and shake rigorously before each use. for the lysol you did not follow the first instruction which was to empty the toilet. there was still toilet water in there. please give lysol a redo ?
Ah well I took empty the toilet as to mean flush and I did that. Dr Bronner’s says to turn off valve and empty which in all honesty I think is unrealistic for most people when cleaning. So I took “empty the toilet” to mean flush. I have a backlog of about 15 viewer requests, I will put this on the list to empty the toilet and retest them all. Thanks for the comment. Maybe it’s great at cleaning other bacterias just not bathroom bacteria. It is the nastiest.

I love your videos. It is so great to see you provide educated reviews. The petri dish is the best! Thank you so much for doing this!
You are very welcome! I am glad you are enjoying my videos! I do have fun making them!!
Has Pinalen ever been tested I wonder. That's what I buy, not Pinesol.
correct. The original lysol comes in small brown bottle and it's the old fashioned real deal
@@FieldOfFocus That is not the original lysol.
I checked on Amazon…they only have numerous kinds of the multi surface cleaner…there is no “disinfectant“.

I think you are right!
Hi! Love your videos! When they say "empty the bowl," I think they mean to remove all standing water, which is easily accompanied by pouring water from a bucket into the bowl, then use the cleaner.
Yeah.. I re-did the Lysol Cleaner with an empty bowl! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is very helpful thank you so much for taking the time to do these test.
You are welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting!

New subscriber! You're found the videos that I've ALWAYS wanted to see! 😊
I am so glad to hear this!!!! Thank you!!
That method seems way better than my solo cup method!! Thanks!
I've always been a fan of Pine-Sol. Now switching !
Lots of options out there!
Good 💯 I have been thinking 🤔 it would be nice to see the comparisons. See you next video, thank you.

Thank you for your hard work and videos
My pleasure! Thank you for your support!
Wow, I’m shocked! I thought Lysol would perform very well but it didn’t. I will start buying Clorox. Great video!
Thank you for watching!!
It was Lysol Hydrogen Peroxide toilet bowl cleaner vs. Clorox. The hydrogen peroxide wasn't very effective in this test.
Great video! Thank you.
Glad you are enjoying my videos!!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words! I purchase my supplies from a biotech company.

kinda sad pine sol got the rep but then I remembered that I use that pine sol for surface cleaning and not toilet bowl cleaning, I use that Clorox toilet bowl cleaner on mine so I feel good about that. when using the incubator how long do I set the Petri dish in it for, i wanna do this around my house. also do you wet the cotton swab then swab the area or swab it dry then wet the end?
Oooh I will totally think about this!!!!

Clorox said 6oz ???! That’s a crap load no pun of gel bleach!! That’s like 1/4 of the bottle

I would really love to see you test Barkeeper's Friend Toilet Bowl Cleaner, especially as I have bought a whole case of it recently at Menard's 😊
I will add that to my viewer suggestion list! I did not know Bar Keepers Friend made a Toilet Bowl cleaner! THANK YOU!
Love bleach for toilets, but do you approve? xoxo
I have septic too ad bleach can hurt it. I'd use bleach for super deep clean but not on a regular basis:)

Could you try the Lysol power toilet bowl cleaner and the Lysol original one toilet bowl cleaner please?
Hello, I will add these to my viewer suggestion list! Thanks for watching!
Cool video. Test scrubbing bubbles next

Thank you!
@@FieldOfFocus Thanks!
Thanks for your thoughts.
I will add that to my viewer suggestion list! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I am glad it helped you! Thank you for watching and happy cleaning!!
" ua-cam.com/video/PLgn-U50aLM/v-deo.html
As for various and natural detergents, I do have a Laundry Playlist.. and I am adding to that as time goes on.
What about cleaning the toilet outer bowl with 70 or 90% alcohol?

I want to see if there is any change if you used the correct recipe for the natural products.
Please share the correct recipe
The Lysol test wasn't conducted properly. She didn't squirt it under the rim. That's why you have to use the bottle. She also rubbed the swab over the top of the toilet which hadn't been cleaned. The same with the last cleaner. I'd like to see this redone properly with control of application and swabbing only inside the bowl.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Reaction between baking soda and vinegar would make the reaction ineffective. I would try the three separately.
I think you are right there, I followed that site's recipe and in retrospect it wasn't a great one!

You're supposed to sprinkle baking soda on the toilet then spray the vinegar , the cleaning is all in the chemical reaction with adding baking soda and vinegar together, when you let that chemical reaction dissipate its not real that effective
Hey there! Thanks for watching! Yes, normally that is what I would think to do also, however I was following the instructions from Woman's World Website.. www.womansworld.com/posts/home/essential-oil-toilet-bowl-cleaner-122479

It doesn't have to be but if a product claims that it can, I test it to see if it does. Plus I test what my viewers and patreons as me to test.
for the lysol you did not follow the first instruction which was to empty the toilet. there was still toilet water in there. please give lysol a redo ?
Ah well I took empty the toilet as to mean flush and I did that. Dr Bronner’s says to turn off valve and empty which in all honesty I think is unrealistic for most people when cleaning. So I took “empty the toilet” to mean flush. I have a backlog of about 15 viewer requests, I will put this on the list to empty the toilet and retest them all. Thanks for the comment. Thanks for watching.
Hi there!! I re-did the Lysol Hydrogen Peroxide Toilet Bowl Cleaner and uploaded that video today!! It is called "Re-Testing Lysol Hydrogen Peroxide Toilet Bowl Cleaner- Viewer Request!" Thank you for the suggestion!
I only use pine sol for the smell lol
Yes! Lots of people love that Pine Sol scent!
That's expensive I'd stuck with bleach
Yeah... running this channel is a bit pricey but I enjoy testing these cleaners. Thanks for watching!! Happy Cleaning!
Interesting that you couldn't figure out how to get lysol under the rim. That gooseneck isn't there for looks. 😉
I used a measuring cup to measure the correct amount.
You could probably eat spaghetti out of your toilet after all that cleaning haha. Jk good job my favorite cleaner bleach wins again!!!
😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks for watching!!!
What about the effect of so much bleach on the environment!!!!
On this channel I focus on testing products to see if their claims match real results in a home. I don’t have the means to conduct a wide spread environmental impact.
How are u cleaning the same toilet several times and it gets worse the more u clean it
Each cleaner is used weeks apart from one another. That is how the toilet gets dirty again.
Please tell me how is the same toilet the more u are cleaning it the dirtier it is .can't be no way
Hi there. So it is the same toilet cleaned weeks apart with different cleaners. None of the tests were conducted on the same day.
Since I don't drink from my toilet anymore, I don't really care.
You are making some smart choices!!!!!!!!!! 😂🤣🚽
You can't say this is correct if u keep leaning and it's dirtier this can't be acerate
These tests were all conducted weeks apart. So each time the toilet bowl got dirty again.
Awesome I just subscribe
Thank you! I appreciate your support!
