This was released as a single two months before the movie was released. It was such an immediate hit, they changed the name of the movie from "Ghost of a Chance" to "Jailhouse Rock." It's a really good movie and the soundtrack is great. "Treat Me Nice" and "You're So Square" were all great songs. They added in the background singers (chanting) for the movie clip. It is not on the track that was released.
This was from his movie Jail house Rock. A jailbird is someone thats been in jail. They made movies around him he was that kind of star. If he was in it it was going to draw a crowd.
Elvis' character in the film 'Jailhouse Rock' was named Vince Everett. At the beginning of the movie, Vince kills a man in a fistfight and goes to prison for manslaughter. His cell block partner teaches him to play guitar. After release a chance meeting with a record industry girl sets him on the road to a singing career. The 'Jailhouse Rock' number is from a scene where Vince is doing a TV special and does a dance song comically connected to his jailbird years. This scene has effectively become known as the first true 'rock video' due to the fact it was totally based around a 'rock 'n' roll' song.
@Too Sushi This was a scene from one of Elvis' movies of the same title. Just a side note, Elvis hated doing all these movies from what others said. Col. Parker, his manager, kept signing him to multi movie contracts until around 1968, when Elvis told him no more movies. Elvis wanted get back on stage and do his music. This is when he introduced his 1968 come back tour on NBC and introduced his black leather suit. Pants and jacket. The show was live and recorded over several episodes because of the massive turn out of fans. Next to his live concertfrom Hawaii a few years later, which was televised live via satellite to 75 countrys around the world, Elvis' 68 comeback tour was the most watch program on TV for its time.
I don't know if it's true or not, but I had heard something years ago about how, yes, Elvis wanted to do his music most of all, but he didn't mind doing movies. His issue was that if he were going to do movies, he wanted to do serious movies, not the 'fluff' movies the Col. kept signing him on for. As much as he didn't want to do these, though, they were basically the first music videos, which is yet another way he had a huge influence in the music industry.

Elvis' movies were simply a vehicle to showcase his charisma and talent (both singing and entertainment.) People didn't flock to see these movies (and still watch them) because they had theatrical value--just to see and hear Elvis. He was an institution.

A great scene from an awesome movie of the same name! You have to watch the movie to understand the song! Then you will see that he had the potential to be a great serious actor! Watch King Creole, outstanding performance by Elvis! 🌹
when I was a kid in the 1950s i understood you just enjoyed the music, the beat, the words and poetry nothing was taken seriously just fun and enjoy it!
This was the first rock video. Meaning a rock n roll song choreographed to music and put on film. The directors wanted Elvis to dance like Fred Astaire and do it much differently. Elvis said there is no way I can or want to do that, so they asked Elvis to show them how he moved, a few hours later you have what you just saw. Love when you do the Elvis videos. If you want another one that brings Rock, Rap and Pop & Gospel together, try “ Run On” by Elvis. Keep em coming friend.....PEACE
His friend George Klein said in an interview that Elvis commented he was no Gene Kelly and then the routine was changed to incorporate his own dance moves.
Hi Sushi. I commented on your video for "If I Can Dream" as well. In 1957, Elvis filmed and released his 3rd motion picture. It was titled "Jailhouse Rock". That movie is one of his most well known, and this is the scene from the film where he sings the title track. In the film, Elvis winds up in jail after accidentally killing a man in a fist fight. After being released from prison, he becomes a successful recording artist, and this scene was a television performance for his character named Vince Everett. Fun fact for you too...Elvis was very hands on with this scene, and worked closely with the choreographer to put his vision for the scene on the screen. Hope this helps! :)
I was about 8yrs old when Elvis popped on the national scene. He was thought to be black in the beginning and some of the black radio stations were the ones that would play him, but, as you see TALENT WILL WIN IN THE END. There was a movement across to do away with Rock and Roll music but when YOU ARE THE KING you win in the end. The men wanted to be him and the women wanted to be with him.....and as we see from the reaction videos they still do. ELVIS THE PELVIS WILL LIVE FOREVER
This is 1957. Nobody moved the way Elvis moved. Not even close. Between his looks, his voice, his talent, and his personality, it was like he was from another planet dropped in the 1950s.
You've GOT to see the movie, "Jailhouse Rock". Unlike his later movies, his earlier ones did have a story to them, along with some great songs by the young Elvis.
Jailbird refers to a criminal who has been in or in out of jail. Prison cell looks like a cage hence jailbird. Another small tidbit, references to the The Purple Gang(real Detroit mobsters), Shifty Henry, Henry was a bass guitar player and Blues Song writer and Sad Sack a WWII cartoon character. Another interesting thing that got past censors in the 1950s is the subtle references to jail house romance; ('Number 47 tells Number 3, 'You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see').
Elvis on stage could move like nobody else. I grew up during the Elvis years, 12 years younger than him. He was magic, he was just so cool ! Guys wanted to be like him. and women idolized him. Most guys back then realized that Elvis was mainly for the girls/women, but no one resented him for it. We were all just kind of thrilled that he was "with us." I do get a kick out Too Sushi's reactions. It is apparent, and kind of cute, that she is another female (out of millions) who has fallen under the Elvis spell.
His moves were considered SCANDALOUS! There are people/bands who changed music forever and Elvis is one of the greatest. Add to that list Little Richard, the Beatles and Michael Jackson. They each took music and performance in a whole new direction. Enjoy.
You should check out the video called "Elvis & the Black Community." It's pieces of interviews with people who knew him and such, and it gives you a great sense of his character.
1957 and yes it's choreographed like a Broadway show. They put his signature stage hip shaking style in the number. This was a huge hit. Scotty Moore on guitar was a hero to many of us guitar players for many years later. The piano is 50s rock staccato banging like Jerry Lee Lewis or Fats Domino. Try King Creole it's the best film of that period.
Jailhouse Rock was the title of Elvis' 3rd movie! In the movie, Elvis was sent to prison for involuntary manslaughter. This Jailhouse Rock dance and song number was a Televised talent show the prison put on. Elvis always said this was one of his favorite movie songs to sing because he had been given a lot of say so when it came to the choreography of it! In the movie, he is a singer trying to make it big, but accidently kills a man in a fist fight and his career is put on hold to serve his prison sentence. GREAT MOVIE! If you enjoy Elvis' music, you should watch his movies. Many of them are much like a broadway stage show. What i mean by that is this....they're telling a story, and Elvis can be doing anything...anyWHERE. He could be driving his car, flying a plaine, riding a horse....and he just breaks into song....Ndand damned if a band doesn't start playing....even if there is no band in the scene or movie. After the song, back to the story. Many of Elvis' movie songs were pretty short, and for that reason...they wanted to get back to the storyline quickly, but also wanted Elvis to be able get some songs in there. All that so Elvis could release a full record of soundtrack songs. Elvis didn't like simging in his movies, but his manager made him do so because it would sell records as well as movie tickets. Elvis was his cash cow....he used Elvis. There was ONE movie he did where he didn't sing at all anywhere in the storyline...only song was over the opening titles. If you like broadway and musicals, you'd enjoy his movies.
This movie was about a young guy that did a stint in jail then gets out and makes it big in music and movies. This was a performance depicting his time in jail. His movies were always love stories and lots of singing. Thats what women wanted.
It was from the movie Jailhouse Rock. He was a rock and roll singer in the movie who became a star after being released. Jailbird is a Female Prisoner.
At one point in Elvis Presley's life in the late 50s he did go to jail he got in a fight at a service station.. jailhouse Rock from 1957. Is the first movie with a rock and roll choreograph dance sequence.. and jailhouse Rock song went to number one on the billboard
Great song! When Elvis got out of the army; his manager Colonel Tom Parker had Elvis sign a movie contract in Hollywood that included filming 32 pictures. realdeal
Elvis was so ahead of his time! I remember back in the 60's they would not show Elvis below his mid torso because of the way he danced. They actually considered it lewd back then! The times have changed!
The single version was recorded on only the 4th take and became the first ever single here in the UK to go direct to No 1 in the charts. He choreographed this scene himself. The ultimate rock’n’roll vocal performance, stunning
Thank you for remembering the most talented, the most versatile entertainer in the world that God graced us with. Sold over 1.5 Billion records and still counting, no one, not the Beatles, not Michael Jackson or anyone else comes even close no matter who might lie about it. The late great James Brown said Elvis took the abuse in the beginning and broke down the door for all others to go through. Muhammad Ali at his funeral said, there wasn't a mean bone in his body and he loved him. Love you, love Elvis.
Definitely at his best 50s early 60s a time when he was actually being elvis in touch with his roots and who he was the movie and song equallyy as great the song is a rock and roll classic and he also gave a great acting performance in the film just as good as any of James Dean films he was definitely at his best in the early years thank you have a good day
In the movie Elvis's character was sent to jail for manslaughter. While in jail he learns to play the guitar. So when he get out he becomes a big star and does a TV special with that video on the special...
TS, There is a strong element of CAMP in this song & thus the video, too. "You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see!" is probably not heard too often in prison.

This was from one of Elvis’ movies …. Probably the first music video. It was made in 1956, when Elvis was 21 years of age.
This movie was about a young guy that did a stint in jail then gets out and makes it big in music and movies. This was a performance depicting his time in jail. His movies were always love stories and lots of singing. Thats what women wanted.
From that day on, groups and singers started to film clips of their songs... Never seen before the King! 🤴
Young and Beautiful and Don't Leave Me Now are the two best vocal performances in Jailhouse Rock. Have a listen👌👌
One of the greatest songs & videos
If you havent done it you should react to Mean Woman Blues by Elvis
Great song! When Elvis got out of the army; his manager Colonel Tom Parker had Elvis sign a movie contract in Hollywood that included filming 32 pictures.
realdeal
Awesome. Elvis was truly the greatest!
I watched alot of your music reactions , I'm jealouse of your hair !! it's gorgouse !
This is from a movie called Jailhouse Rock, one of his better films. His best movie was King Creole.
Blue Hawaii was good
@@heyhocodyo97 Yep
When I think of 50s Rock, this and about 10 other songs will pop into my head (at least 5 of them are Elvis songs).
Elvis Choreographed this scene himself!
Beautiful as ever.....
I love his dance moves
TS, There is a strong element of CAMP in this song & thus the video, too.
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see!" is probably not heard too often in prison.
C est le plus de toute Amérique Elvis le plus photographie au monde et Hollywood aucun chanteur ou acteur ne oze faire comme lui trop classe trop beau Elvis c est Amérique
This is my favorite by elvis
It’s one of his movies which he starred in whilst The Beetles were conquering the world. A jailbird is someone that frequents prison.
