  • No wood goes to waste! Watch this maple stump get turned into a beautiful bowl! The finish is Danish oil with furniture polish.
Check out my website adirondackiron.com/ for available products! (USA only)
My method is to microwave on high for 2 minutes and then let it cool for 2. I keep doing that until it stops loosing weight and no longer has a 'moist heat' feel to it. The wood should loose at least 30-35% of it weight during the process. The bowl should be left out for a day or two before finishing. I'll make a video about it eventually. Beware if you do it too much the microwave can actually char the bowl.
The most important factors to keep the bowl from cracking is a uniform wall thickness and no pithy center wood.

      Hogan Baker you're welcome!
You might want to try using some denatured alcohol for quick drying of your rough turned bowls! 24 hrs should do the trick. You could turn some bigger pieces that way, if you ever want too.
Btw, I use the microwave method sometimes too. Works well for a quick dry-out of green wood. Denatured alcohol will do the same thing!

Thanks for the advice, I really need to try the alcohol method soon! I like how microwave can get a bowl start to finish in a day. But the huge downside is that I can't dry a bowl that is also thick enough to re-turn, so I'm stuck hand sanding for hours :P
