I have always liked those radios. Never owned one but always wanted one. My buddy had one in the early 90's. I bought the Grant XL and he bought the 148GTL. Awesome radio. UDX-76 waiving a hand.
I wouldn't compare popularity to performance, the Grant XL is solid as the Cobra 148 and performs equally. They're both outstanding radios, the Cobra was more popular is all.
I got into cb radio when I got out of the Army in the mid '90's....at that time, the big 3 mobiles in my area were the Cobra 148 GtL, the Uniden Grant and the Galaxy 99V. In addition, at that time, the most popular base radio seemed to be the Cobra 2000 GtL. Lol, I'm a bit of a collector....hoarder? No, collector, lol, as well...I don't have a 2000 GTL, but I have all 3 of those mobiles! I also, for some reason, became addicted to collecting Pace cb's. I have about 20 or so different models including the big 3 from Smokey and the Bandit (CB166, 1000M Sidetalk, CB76) movie. Yes, I do Ham...but I'll never abandon CB!
I've owned a General Lee, owned a Stryker 955, owned a ranger, owned a galaxy and the honest truth, for me anyway, is I still like my cobra GTL that's in my jeep the best. It's just the easiest radio to deal with I've ever had. No antenna/swr problems, no issues with internal parts, no extra gadgets built in to have to consider. Definitely my favorite. Less is sometimes more and cobra radios fit that niche perfectly.
The early Taiwan made is the best! One with the white power socket matched with white plug power cord. Had 2 of those. Just follow cobra’s technical bulletin regarding circuit update, like the diode on the voltage regulator, have it recapped, removed the corrosive glue and aligned if possible then it will serve you for another 30years ++😎
I used to collect and work on CB Radios in the 80's and 90's . Nobody talks on them anymore around here . I still have a Brand New in the box GALAXY 2517 With an Astatic Echomax 2000 wired to it !
@@rayinpau.s.a.6351 dang that’s a shame no one in your area is on cb anymore. It’s still pretty big in my area, but at 30yrs old I’m the youngest one on the air here lol. You ever wanna sell that 2517 let me know!
I would sell the Radio & The Echomax for $550.00 , And you would cover the shipping cost . I have both boxes for the Radio . The Black box & the Original Shipping Box . I know you would love owning this Radio as I have owned a few of these .
I still got the Uniden AX144 my parents bought me back in the 80s. The ANL/NB has stopped working and a seized RF meter. The receive and transmit sound quality on the AX144 was excellent. It's still my favourite radio for quality
I have had a Cobra 148 GTL DX since the 90's. It's much loved and i will never part with it. Cars these days don't have room to fit one since airbags were invented. Shame. Nice Vid !!
The Cobra 148 made in Taiwan is the best one and it has the MB8719 PLL IC that be programmed easy with switches for more Frequencies stay away from the one that was made in China. Just my two cents Commet
The early 148s made in Taiwan and the Philippines from 1978-1991 were made with better components than the later models. Im not sure why people go crazy over the Philippines models specifically though. Pre 1992 they’re all the same internally.
I have been looking for a 148 to set up as a base but all I have found are on eBay and I can’t seem to win one for the snipers that wait to the last second to outbid me
Yeah they’ve been selling high on there too I’ve noticed. They’re awesome radios. Hopefully you’ll find one soon just keep looking 👍🏻 if I happen to get ahold of one I’ll let you know.
@@udx-294tn5 that sounds good I have been out of the radio game for a good long time and wanting to get back in to it and these new radios I just don’t know so much about. I am kinda an old school person but I’m kinda an old person to start with haha.
I just purchased a Cobra nightwatch. Was hoping to use it for a trip on I95. But’s it basically useless. Nothing but skip, and people 1,000 miles away talking B.S.
I own a 1995 cobra made in Malaysia and another one from 2003 cobra love them both they’re the best radios ever made🐍🐍
Yep, even the later models were awesome radios! Thanks for watching
oh man I want one
Out of all of mine this one is my favorite. I liked what ya mentioned about the sound... so true.
Yeah and especially with the hi-low tone switch. Wish they still made them like these! Thanks for watching

These radios are demand and fetch good prices, even broken.
I loved my 148gtl I used to have mine hooked upto a Sweet 16 dropped the hammer on the planet through a 2 element cubical quad.
Killer combo! Thanks for watching
@@udx-294tn5 YES it was.😏👍
She’s a Beaut Clark!
so pretty I want one, I had a Cobra 29LTD in the 80's and made it a base station and met some really good people and made friends
Sounds awesome, that’s what it’s all about! Thanks for watching
I always wanted one to kinda match up with my Cobra 2000 GTL!
I love Cobra 2000GTL, soldier boy 101 on UA-cam
The Cobra 148GTL is basically a Cobra 2000GTL . Just without the Large Wood case , Speaker , and Frequency Counter .
Yessir exact same board 👍🏻

I have a cobra 138xlr and it lives on the dash of my 4wd and it never misses a beat
I had one a couple years ago. Those radios are tough as nails! Built like tanks
Great 148. I have 10 several are close to mint.....4 are 1978 1st year 148's...Really looking forward to your adventures with your 148....
I had a 1978 with serial number 809… really early one. They are awesome radios 👍🏻
Old school is the best school Nice radio
Nice
the 148 GTL is considered one of the best made. I Have a few radios but want one of these. and would never own a cobra 129 as it has no sideband.
I have had a Cobra 148 GTL DX since the 90's. It's much loved and i will never part with it. Cars these days don't have room to fit one since airbags were invented. Shame. Nice Vid !!
I’ve always wanted a 148GTL-DX!! Those are awesome radios 👍🏻
I have a few of these beauties but not quite as nice as yours....
ive got a philly uniden grant xl (almost identical to a 148) and a uniden pc76xl ..i liv3 the phillipeans models.
Oh yeah that’s a great radio!
I have 2, 148s and a 138
I used to have a mint 138xlr… sold it like a dummy. Both are awesome radios
I have the Uniden Grant Xl which is the exact same radio. Why does Cobra call the mic gain "dynamike" and the clarifier "voice lock" ?
Good question. I’m not really sure why they did that. Lol.
Marketing 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheLaughingOtter I could see that… lol
I like the 29LTD better in my preference
Oh yeah… They’re great for AM.
Had a Cobra 148 GTL did not think it RX as good as one of my Colt Excalibur SSB but everyone to there own.
Yep I’d say they’re all a little different. Those Excaliburs are pretty sweet radios too!
Hey black duck, 73s udx358
Thanks for watching 358 👋

Can you stile get 3made amp and will it operate on 12 VDC where to buy.

same board as the cobra 2000 right?
Yessir. One of the best CB radio boards made in my opinion. Thanks for watching
So the manufacturer makes a fortune

They’re awesome radios, but yeah the band is crazy right now with the skip.
It's the most over rated radio ever to hit the market
Everyone has an opinion. Better than most of its time!
