Hey, Mower Junkie! Howdy, sir! Just thought I'd drop an idea to you for those scratches and scuffs on the metal areas: If you can find it, there is a metal polish called Flitz. It is very fine polish, and works great. I used it when I was in Law enforcement years ago to polish the badge, and buttons, etc. Maybe it might do the trick for the detailing on the radio. You need some jeweler's screwdrivers, steady hands, and a good magnifying lamp and you can turn the meter's pivot screw about 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
For stuck meters sometimes a fuzzy cloth n your fingertip and swipe the face crystal sometimes a magnetized meter sticks I have seen that 50/50 times but more than not returns to stuck My skip has been nill days now started dropping away the eclipse day I also have so!e poor jumpers all happened same time bought 4 of those Amazon superbat cables and the compression ends showing shield loss intermittent tried fixing some rg 8 heavy with new ends cause one was trying to pull shield away two repaired one survived the other still intermitt so sent for 2 5' rg213 with amphenol pl259 pre made( funny thing the 213 cost only 2$ more than 3' Astatic 8x grey cable and amphenol When I use the larger cables with better velocity rating the whole system flattens to 1.1 and the radio shows full swing when the others only 1/2 scale swing same 1.1 and watt meter same at the run out to antenna
I saved the old meter, someday I'll see if it can be saved. the only thing I did with it was a drop of machine oil, with time that oil might loosen it up.
everyone is looking for the famous cobra 148gtl from malaysia, philippines or taiwan, but those who sell it used on ebay want to sell it at the prices of a last generation Kenwood or Yesu without understanding that it is only a CB radio and that it is merely a hobby , and having seen prices up to 1500 dollars I think they are crazy and only 1% of the population, citizens band enthusiasts, would pay that crazy price for a CB.
Hey MJ.. I have a 138XLR..what's difference between that and the 148? BTW, mine has a bunch of switches someone added to the bottom of it. Was never able to sort out what they are. I think someone may have added 10M to it? There's 5 extra switches on there. Any ideas?
The original Cobra radios from the 60's and into the early 70's were made in the USA by their parent company B&K Precision (Dynascan Corp). Around 1971-72 Dynascan began having their Cobra CB's made in Japan first by Toshiba and then by the upcoming Uni Electronics Corp who in 1974, changed their name to Uniden Corporation. In the 1980's many lower end Cobra radios were built by Maxon in Korea and also Uniden in Hong Kong.

I have 148 and I had it for 44 years I got it back in the 70s it work great
I still have mine that was fully Modded from 1990. That and my Uniden Grant are my favorites.

That would be my guess, that the switches are for the Outbands.
