I grew up with R.E.M. in the 1980s and 1990s, and through a mutual friend, I met Michael Stipe in New York a few years back... We visited art galleries together, and after a couple of hours of doing that, he told us he had to leave to walk a friend's dog... we thought he was saying that just to be nice, as a way of ditching us.... Then he said, "but I'll only be about 45 minutes, do you want to have dinner together afterwards?" We said yes, and met back up with him later and had a lovely dinner at an italian restaurant in the West Village. A true gentleman, kind soul and an artist unlike any other- what a pleasure it was to spend that time with Michael Stipe-- Thank you Mr Stipe and R.E.M. for your art-- your music will always remain omnipresent in my life :)
He retreats into the low voice but his reactions are quick, anxious-like, don't know why I look for these things in people, is just interesting and like I said uncovers mysteries maybe.

This was one of the best interviews with him I have seen. He is just such a wonderful soul and his shyness makes him even more genuine. Just love him 💗
Michael Stipe couldn't be in friendlier company. Frank Skinner knows everyone's a bit odd and that's what makes them interesting. "I don't know why I said that" is what anxious people always say when they feel comfortable being themselves. Nice man, nice host, nice audience. Lovely.
Yes the band that had most impact on Kurt Cobain and Nirvana, itself a band of immortal and iconic status that very few if any band could ever reach these days and its robotic computer game generation
They’ve stated at the time that it wasn’t considered a good representation of their work. This was a ‘Best of’ release, and they felt it wasn’t their ‘best’. It was included in their 2011 ‘Greatest Hits’ though - because it was a hit 👍

@@tucosalamanca5194 messages are quite positive overall though. When you read the lyrics they're quite optimistic really. REM often sing about overcoming adversities and obstacles. I agree some songs make no sense though. Like I have literally no idea what The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight is all about.
I find Michael absolutely mesmerising. What a handsome, modest man. And oh, those eyes ....

Not many people who have had the amount of fame and success Michael has remain so shy and humble. Just makes you love him and the band more
Awe he was so shy , bless him . He’s so handsome and has a beautiful smile ❤️
You gotta love Michael ..... such a gentle genius. !!!!
He’s adorable! So sweet and shy, met him a few times.
He really is a genius!
@@pyt7778 He Seems Like A cool Guy just out of interest did you meet the other members? If so what were they like?
He's so sweet 😭The way he says "ok thanks, Frank" after Frank tells him it's going fine is beyond adorable
His fainting story was fascinating. I could listen to Michael Stipe talk all day.
Such a gentle soul and a very very humble man. A very talented man and that voice of his is just sublime
A very talented artist, yet very down to earth, humble, gentle and kind. A beautiful human being. ❤
Frank did great interviewing Michael where others would have not. Frank’s comedic chops managed to smooth away Michael’s awkwardness.
Simon Archer he may possibly be the most socially awkward person ever, but for that exact reason he is my kindred spirit.
Anne Munro In person Michael can be so shy, nothing like you see on stage, where he exudes confidence. Such a sweet, kind soul x
Seems anxious maybe, maybe social anxiety or OCD, I have found the source of mystery that confuses us all perhaps : )

Me too , every word is sincere
And very sexy.
I’ve never really understood after seeing REM live many times how he’s such a shy humble guy but such a showman on stage.
Humble soul ... genius
Well that was adorable.
It says a lot that if you scroll down you will not see on 'thumbs down" comment here.
I wish Michael had answered the last Question 😁😁 And he is Sooo handsome 👍

Yes . But only travelled through it

I cant understand what he says at 7:40. Can anyone help me out?
He says "I like to faint".
Although I did want him to ask why Shiny happy people isn’t on the greatest hits? It was a hit both sides of the Atlantic
