  • Growing up in the US, arcades were a big deal. Beat-em-ups, fighting games, and racers played on these big cabinet machines were super appealing and many kids (including myself) looked forward to any chance to spend hours at the local arcade. Eventually, arcades faded in popularity. With console games catching up in hardware power and allowing a very similar experience at home, it wasn't as appealing to go to arcades. The recent years brought their relevance back some, especially for adults with barcades. And you'll still see arcade cabinets at some places such as the laundromat and movie theater. Still, it just didn't have the same level of wonder as before. Most of what you might see these days are cabinets from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
It's a much different story in Japan. This is the country where a lot of these 80s, 90s, and 2000s arcade games originated from. And here, it never lost its spark. In any major city in Japan, you can find several big, multi-floor arcade centers with the latest and greatest games. The variety also stands out - mech shooters, head-to-head racing games, taiko drum machines, and the latest Street Fighter are some of what these places have to offer. And it's not like there is a single cabinet of a game. A lot of the games have their own entire row laid out! It's really a spectacle and if you have some time to spare, be sure to check one out.

I remember that during my 1st trip to Japan on 2020 i was just amazed by the arcades!! Specially the retro ones with games from the late 80s , and 90s. Down here in Chile, arcades were quite popular too , in fact, arcades were like a hood kid's choice when it comes to videogames because we did not have the money for a NES or another home console system , so when i had the chance of playing again Sunset Riders, Tumblepop , Final Fight, so on and so forth i was so happy and kinda sad couse i wished that friends from my childhood could be there with me enjoying those games as we used to enjoy when we were kids. Awesome video as always , man. Cheers!

That's true! Instead of dropping a bunch of money for a console and games, you can use the spare change you have as a kid to play a few rounds of a bunch of different games at the arcade! Wow - Sunset Riders and Final Fight! Brings me back. We must be of the same generation.
