Hello and welcome! My name is Ollie and like yourself, I am on an odyssey. Check out this channel if you like videos from a unique perspective of an individual's cinematography journey in life, passions, travels, and more. Videos are released multiple times a week. The first series is highlighting my travels in Japan. Thanks for watching!
Part XIV: Healing Up at an Old Japanese Inn | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
If you read the previous video's description, I mentioned how the weekend Kyoto trip ran into a hiccup. Basically, I got sick. Heading into that weekend, I was feeling out of it. Even in the Kuromon Market video, I started to notice early signs and had to just go back to my place of stay to rest. Then we took the trip to get to Kyoto and I was probably at my worst. The journey to get there felt long and tiring.
When we arrived that evening at Hostel Haruya, I was so relieved. It turned out to be the perfect place to rest up. I lied on the tatami floor and just wanted to stay there forever. My travel companion Yoko was the best. Although we didn't get to do much of what we originally planned, we made the most out of it and spent more time at this place. It was a shared accommodation and you can hear all the little creaks from the other guests, but it somehow still felt like we were in our own little spot and the calming energy helped me feel so relaxed. I hope you get the gist of that vibe here in this video. Obviously, I would never want to get sick, but it led us to have such a pleasant time staying in more and after only a day, I already felt better. Instead of venturing out further, we kept it easygoing and explored the nearby Yasaka Jinja and Nanzen-ji, which turned out wonderful. Remember, sometimes some exciting plans might not work out, but there are alternatives that can turn out just as good. We'll be sure to try to go back sometime to catch the other places we wanted to go!

Part XIII: The Magic of Gion at Night | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 447 годин тому
I made a follow-up trip to Kyoto for a weekend. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I didn't get to do a whole lot, but I was still able to set out for an evening in Gion with Yoko. I saw Gion a couple months back during the daytime, but the night has a much different feel. And it is majestic. If you remember a past video of mine, you may recognize the same dance stage with the many lanterns hangi...
Part XII: Osaka's Kitchen | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 2416 годин тому
Each major city in Japan has their own various markets with many food stalls. Osaka is at the forefront of Japanese street food and beyond the famous Dotonburi street there are other areas to walk around for eats, such as Kuromon Market. Over a hundred shops are open here with all sorts of eats to satisfy any food cravings. And like many food-focused areas, it can get crazy busy! It's always fu...
Part XI: Would You Like Coffee With Your Classical Vinyl? | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 25День тому
After Nara Park, I wanted to sit down for a nice cup of coffee. Near the station, I found this tiny shop on the 2nd floor of a small building. It consisted of a bar-style counter at the front with a couple tables in the back. What made it feel very different was the single lady operating the place - taking your order, making your coffee, and rotating the classical music played on an elaborate v...
Part X: The Park of a Thousand Deer | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 2314 днів тому
This park needs no introduction. For people who have been to the Kansai area, Nara Park is a place most people have visited. And if they haven't, they most definitely knew about it. I lied about the title. Nara Park doesn't have a thousand deer. It has over a thousand deer. As soon as you get off the station, you will understand why there is so much emphasis on the deer here. Even before you ge...

Osaka definitely has an urban, city feel compared to its "traditional" counterpart Kyoto. That doesn't mean the city is without traditional landmarks. Japan has many shrines and temples throughout the country and Osaka is also filled with them. I spent a day checking out a couple well-known ones - Namba Yasaka Shrine and Hozenji Temple. Each of these places have a unique feature: Yasaka with it...
Part VIII: Up to the City of Air | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 3021 день тому
For an impressive vantage point of Osaka, I headed to the Umeda Sky Building. The building has a super clean futuristic feel and the 40th floor is reached by elevator and taking the final few floors via the escalator, which I quite enjoyed taking up. The 2-floor observatory has a cafe with sweet sweeping views of the cityscape and the roof has a full circle to look out in every direction, as we...
Part VII: The Station of Time & Space | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 2221 день тому
I've had vague memories of seeing a visually-striking train station in Osaka...was it Osaka? Regardless, I had an idea to try to find that station. I don't think I even did, but it was well worth the trip to see Osaka Station City. As you may know, some of Japan's stations are insanely complex - filled with shops, restaurants, and things to see. It's a whole ordeal to even get around and is lik...
Part VI: The Beautiful Green Castle and its Stunning Surroundings | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 2328 днів тому
Earlier this year, I didn't make it to Osaka Castle. I had visited twice before and it was definitely a place I could still remember, even though it's been almost 10 years. What I remember the most was the bridge entrance, with the castle in the far distance. It is such a beautiful view and shows how a marvelous structure is surrounded by areas just as impressive. The surroundings that engulf t...
Part V: Takoyaki Party | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 327Місяць тому
In this installment of Ollie Odyssey, I had the chance to join in on a super Osaka thing: takoyaki parties. Yoko and her family were kind enough to invite me and a few of her friends to this fun get together that involves chit-chat, drinks, karaoke, and of course, making takoyaki! I tried my hand at flipping these delicious octopus balls (I unfortunately didn't get footage of me doing so) and d...
Part IV: Serenity at a Temple Flea Market | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2

Two times a month, Shitenno-ji holds a local flea market, a unique combination that allows visitors to browse merchants' wares consisting of yukatas, cloths, trinkets, and souvenirs, while taking in the beautiful traditional surroundings of a longstanding buddhist temple. I went along with besties Yoko and Hanae on their quest for the next best bargain. It started to rain soon after arriving, s...

Growing up in the US, arcades were a big deal. Beat-em-ups, fighting games, and racers played on these big cabinet machines were super appealing and many kids (including myself) looked forward to any chance to spend hours at the local arcade. Eventually, arcades faded in popularity. With console games catching up in hardware power and allowing a very similar experience at home, it wasn't as app...
Part II: The Eccentriciti of Dotonburi | Ollie Odyssey Japan Vol. 2
Переглядів 161Місяць тому
Surprisingly, my first trip to Osaka this year didn't involve a stop to Dotonburi. I have been there a couple times 10 years ago but it was awhile ago so I could only remember bits and pieces. I finally returned to this popular street and it was as busy as ever. There's a reason why it attracts so many people - plentiful food options, visually striking 3D shop signs above their entrances, and a...

When I started this channel in May of 2024, I didn't have any grand plans. I just wanted to share my adventures of my travels from my most recent trip to Japan. As I expanded it to 35 parts, I learned how much joy I got out of the whole thing - from going on the trip to turning the memories into little bites of visual content. 2 months later, it was all put out there. I didn't want the content ...

as always, great material!! I was wondering, do you shot with gimbal only? or you sometimes go handheld? Now, about the video, maaan Osaka has become like a core memory for me specially for the food and the craft beer.
For this channel, I've only used the Sirui 35mm and Nanomorph 20mm lenses, which are both anamorphic without stabilization. I've tried handheld on the 35mm before and it's extremely difficult to get clean moving shots. Or, if I am able to achieve a decent clean shot, it takes more tries. There's just too much shake. So even holding it up without movement has considerable amount of shake. In a perfect world, I would be able to just bust out the camera with these lenses on a dime and get a shot I want, but in reality, I have to go to these locations already having the camera balanced on a gimbal (or utilize a tripod). Not ideal for being compact or avoiding attention and I'm not one to like being noticed that much, but I remind myself of the chance to get something different and interesting.
Incredible work Ollie! So well directed and edited and very pleasing to watch <3
❤❤❤
I remember that during my 1st trip to Japan on 2020 i was just amazed by the arcades!! Specially the retro ones with games from the late 80s , and 90s. Down here in Chile, arcades were quite popular too , in fact, arcades were like a hood kid's choice when it comes to videogames because we did not have the money for a NES or another home console system , so when i had the chance of playing again Sunset Riders, Tumblepop , Final Fight, so on and so forth i was so happy and kinda sad couse i wished that friends from my childhood could be there with me enjoying those games as we used to enjoy when we were kids. Awesome video as always , man. Cheers!
That's true! Instead of dropping a bunch of money for a console and games, you can use the spare change you have as a kid to play a few rounds of a bunch of different games at the arcade! Wow - Sunset Riders and Final Fight! Brings me back. We must be of the same generation.
I love dotonbori! Nice Video. 😍
Good Video 👏🏽
my guy, this was beautiful. well done
Thanks so much! I'm happy with how it turned out.
This year was the first time i visited Dotonburi and i was shocked! The whole vibe was so different, so loud but in a good way, don't know how to describe it. It was cool :)
It is definitely a very unique part of Osaka that will always stick with you!
Beautiful video! I can't wait for my Japan trip in September!
It's gonna be epic! Have a blast!
I'm SO HAPPY you got to experience this. This is life. I really enjoyed these videos! 👨🏻🍳👌
Thanks dude! Sometimes I hold back on just going for it. I'm glad I finally came around and now have many memories that will forever stay with me.
just great! And what an end to this series!
Appreciate you following me on this ride! There's more coming soon. Very very soon. 😉
U guys are cute ❤
visited Senso-ji during my 1st and 2nd trip to Japan and yeah, touristy, crowded and all, it's still a gorgeous place. Love your work, man
Thank you! Yes, it's worth multiple visits. I still want to go back there another time!
breathtaking
these could truly be twice as long my friend
I have been told this from others. I will definitely look into it for the future. Your visuals are tremendous, by the way!
LOVE this vibe. Keep it up, man!
Thanks! I didn't even expect to go to a random place for coffee and capture any of it, but a rainy day that cancels your original plans can lead to other explorations. The place, like you said, just had a vibe and I wanted to see what I could put together. Also, it's another example of a track that helps further enhance the visuals. Even the little creaks kept in the recording of the track are so fitting.
Hey Ollie! I hope you're well. Sorry for not commenting on the last few videos. I've just been in awe. Taking in your journey and the lush scenery. However, this one got me in the comment section. I'm suddenly intrigued by stone skipping. You did good! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
No worries! Haha stone skipping is quite intriguing. We actually weren't going to do it due to some rain but it was light enough and it was fun to try. I hope I can do better next time!
This video is like a sukiyaki for the soul. Heartwarming. I'm glad I found your channel. Keep making videos!
Sukiyaki for the soul - incredible! Much appreciated! I shall keep making more. Thank you for finding the channel!
beautiful
giving me terrace house vibes
Haha that's so funny because there was a particular scene and action from one of them that I noticed while editing this and reminded me of Terrace House
Gotta say i watched every single episode until now this afternoon! Just loved the format, cinematography, colors, and the old school JRPG look for the "U.I." it's just awesome! I had the chance to visit Japan for the second time on february of this year and i will be going again on 2025. As a street photographer that' is looking more and more to video this series is a huge inspiration!! Subscribed :) cheers from Chile!
Whoa thank you so much! Yeah, it was a last minute idea to use the old-school JRPG elements. I thought because it goes with a theme of an adventure, it would fit well in the series. Yes Japan has so many incredible sights and vibes that it just sparks this desire to keep filming. I didn't even expect to make so many parts while filming but it just seemed like something I should try. Your subscription is much appreciated! Keep your street photography passion going and I hope your transition to more video is a rewarding journey!
waaa soo peace, very scenery
Your vids have really tempted me to get an anamorphic of my own! 🤣 This was great as always!🔥
Another splendid instalment, Ollie. 🤗 Out of curiosity, how do you create the blue lines - is it some type of bloom or halation effect within your editing software?
Thanks! The blue flares are thanks to anamorphic lenses. Some people don't like the flares because of how unnatural they can be for certain environments and how they can appear when they're not desired, but I lean more towards liking them than not. I actually don't know the reason as to why streaks happen with these lenses, but it is part of what makes them particularly cinematic - light streaks, wider aspect ratios (meaning wider field of view), and the tendency to have more oval bokehs. I think there's a few more differences that make the images different from standard type lenses. These lenses are probably not as useful for a lot of standard work, but for film-like experiments, they are a lot of fun.
@@OllieOdyssey325 Thank you for the detailed response and explanation of anamorphic lenses. I like the flares. They’re adding to the storytelling in this series. 💙
@@SamanthaEarle If you're ever curious, you can research the different offerings where some have less pronounced flares and even different colors! Blues tend to give a modern/sci-fi feel, while something like orange can work well with a lot of natural light.
Loving the vibes of these videos man. Keep it rolling!
Thanks for checking out the videos! Yes yes will keep rolling out more!
The colors here and the vibe of the vid are exceptional as always! I miss shinsekai!
This was mesmerizing! and that shot of the trees swirling at 0:49 was very hypnotic! How did you shoot it so smooth?
I had the RS3 pointed up and tried to keep a constant panning motion!
@@OllieOdyssey325 that's a great tip! I'll be sure to remember it if ever I wanna recreate something similar in the future. thank you so much! 😄
I'm hooked and looking forward to the next instalment - if all my previous comments didn't say that enough. Lol. May the UA-cam algorithm find this series and push it out to more people. Your work on this project is really good! x
You are amazing for getting through the whole series so far. The comments are much appreciated!
As said by the previous viewer, the music is incredible. It takes the visuasl to another level. 🤩
Wow. So beautiful.
The transitions, throughout all the videos thus far, are top tier. 👏
Thank you! I'm learning to make sure pacing and beats are attended to, while maintain a bit of unpredictability to keep it fresh.
The silent (no dialogue) storytelling, with the choice of music, is so good!
With just raw visuals, they may be beautiful, but often don't carry much weight. Components like music can bring them to the next level.
The richness and vibrancy of the colours at night, so good!
Japan at night 🙌🏼
I just found your channel and I'm about to binge this whole playlist you created. Let's go... 🤓
Woohoo welcome to my odyssey! Thanks!
omg I got a shoutout Arashiyama was so tranquil so early in the morning, it was really nice chatting with you there!
Yes I look forward to seeing your Japan photos when you have them up!
Lovely work as always! and I love that rack focus shot at 0:28 So cool!
OMG that heron shot! Sooo goood! and the composition of all your shots are really amazing!
So unexpected, I was sitting by the water to rest and the heron landed right in front and hung out for a bit.
@@OllieOdyssey325 Damn, that's definitely a once in a lifetime shot!
You really captured the beauty of Fushimi Inari. I was here recently as well and it's great to see someone else's perspective and style of shooting of the same place!
Much appreciated for checking this out. Definitely cool to see how the same place can be captured in many different ways!
@@OllieOdyssey325 Can't wait to watch more of your stuff!
The GH6 pairing together with the Sirui anamorphic looks amazing! Would love to try an anamorphic in the future. And your composition for the shots is great! Also digging this format you're using for your vid. Reminds me of an old school pc game 😄
Yeah I didn't think I'd really care for anamorphic but with its characteristics I find myself getting into a filmmaking mentality, so have been gravitating towards them a lot lately. I'm going to be trying out a Nanomorph soon (a wider lens because I found the 35mm to be quite difficult at times to get wide and steady shots). Haha and yes I started with bits of gaming elements and then eventually just tacked on a few more to keep with a style.
@@OllieOdyssey325 yeah, i can imagine just seeing that anamorphic look on my monitor, I'd be the same too! Can't wait to see what you shoot with the nanomorph. I'm looking forward to it! Cheers man!
Incredible music!
It really is an incredible track! Sifting through a huge music library can be daunting but totally worth it when there's music that feels just right.
Oh my!!! One of my favorite episode. That moving shot and music went so well together!! Just pretty!!
Thanks! This place was kind of a random excursion. Glad I got to check it out. Kyoto has a lot of beautiful sites. I wish I had more time to capture more during my stay, but I do plan on heading back there soon.
Great stuff
whoa
Absolutely LOVE Atami- the small town vibes, shops and ryokans are so cute and enchanting. I stayed at Furuya Ryokan- so beautiful!
I'm so glad to hear you've been there as well! It definitely deserved more time.
😏🫣
🤭
Nise shot ❤️🔥
In my opinion, your work is truly one of a kind in UA-cam. SUBSCRIBE people!!!!!
Sheesh I don't know what to say. Thanks so much!

YOU are amazing. Thank you for watching!
Groovy beats!!!
Groovy tune for sure!
your editing is so nice, dude. great work!
