  • In this extended video we look back at the cases of Paradise and Carl as they serve time behind the razor wire fences of juvenile detention. When we met Carl, his time in detention was almost over. The juvenile court had sentenced him to "Boys School," which meant he was on his way to juvenile prison. Juvenile prison is considered the last stop/last chance in the juvenile system before kids commit crimes that get them waived to adult court. Meanwhile, Paradise is spending her final days in detention thinking about what life will be like where the judge is sending her -- a placement facility. As we watched their dramatic stories play out on screen, we were with Carl the day he made his nervous transfer to juvenile prison, and watched as he went through the intake process. We also look back at the teacher who drove Carl to the prison, juvenile detention teacher Mr. Brett, who was a former NBA player who decided he wanted to make a difference in kids' lives.

@amarbarbarian1338 - You are correct! He talked to us a lot about how that experience and his professional life working on the Chicago Stock Exchange gave him a passion for helping kids who weren't as lucky as he was. GREAT guy!!

i went tk prison when i was 16 at a place called Western Youth Institute but they called it Morganton High Rise in North Carolina... The place has since been demolished but they kept us in a cell 23 hours a day but the horrible part was these cells didn't have toilets or sinks in them... They would keeo us in there from between dinner to breakfast without ketting us out to use the bathroom for 12 hours... We were literally shitting on towels that we would slide under the doors into the hallways so we didn't have ti smell out own feces and get beat by the guards for it and we would piss out od the screen windows 13 floors up... there is a documentary on Good Morning America filmed back in 1999... The place was hell and the guards beat us all the time while we were in handcuffs and pepper sprayed and wouldn't even ket us take a shower or wash our eyes out after they pepper sprayed us, sometimes for days so we would just sit in there burning from it... it was hell on earth and I'm so glad yo say its been over 10 years since I've been in any trouble... That prison was for 16 to 24 year olds

@shotzburynative4384 - absolutely horrible. We honestly don't know how some kids survive experiences like that. Really appreciate you telling your story. Too many voices have never been heard and it's important for history to take note. Thank you.

That’s not right for anyone regardless of whether they are an adult or kid but at least it made you not want to go back if there was any value in it.

@@shotzburynative4384 I'm really sorry that you had to endure such torturous conditions at that facility. Have you considered making a video about your experience? A lot of times I've noticed that in these types of situations once one person speaks out about these types of conditions it can result in a cascade effect for other testimonials to emerge by others who went through similar. These types of institutional abuses are much more common than most realize, particularly with children and teens but obviously adults as well.
Obviously speaking out isn't for everyone but regardless of your decision I truly wish you healing in your path forward.
