Once a year Muslims fast for a whole month not eating from sunrise to sunset. They like to break thier fast with dates which leaves tons of pits by the end of the month lol so this would work great for them.

It's funny how you commented that it seems wasteful because you have all of these dates just to get one cup of "coffee" but I'm guessing it started as the reverse: someone used a lot of dates and had a bunch of pits lying around.

Using dates to make a coffee like drink just seems more like something you would use to stretch out your coffee kind of like chicory or roasted soy beans. Or if you ran out of coffee and you saved the date pits from all the dates you've eaten/ used for cooking with for the use of making a hot coffee like beverage drink.

On vacation in Morocco I bought some of that "date coffee", they drink it there because it's cheaper than regular coffee, because dates are eaten at (almost every meal, as a snack, as a sweet, put into baked goods... And I, too, use it more like a strong, flavourful tea. It doesn't really compare to coffee except for the way it's produced and the ground up seeds do look like coffee grounds.

    • @fz3310

Hi! So I'm from Morocco and would like to clear up a few things.
Dates are consumed mostly during Ramadan ( Muslim fasting month) to break the fast, and are sometimes put into cookies, but Moroccan pastry is mostly almond powder and paste ( along with flour sugar... of course)
Coffee made out of dates is actually... rare? Never heard of it in my 22 years of existence. Coffee is quite cheap ( robusta mostly, Arabica can be costly) and you can get a decent cup of coffee for less than $1.5 USD actually.

okay for the oven clock situation check, if there's a clock button or anything you can press to make the clock lights on your oven/microwave to start flashing, or if not, as long as you don't have any specific settings if you have it digitally set up, if you are able to turn off the oven and microwave and turn them on at 12:00 if it's not too much hassle, they should default to that :3

It's interesting how the date pits' coffee has notes of spice and cardamom because we usually drink Arabic coffee accompanied by dates (Arabic coffee is prepared with spices such as cardamom and cinnamon). I guess that's why dates and Arabic coffee makes a good combination 😂
Morgan, I'd like for you to try Arabic coffee one day. It's quite different than western coffee.
Here's a recipe that you could try, of course, there are many variations but you can choose to omit or add what you like (my family likes cardamom and saffron and I like to add cinnamon to the previous two:

To fix the clocks-being-one-minute-off thing you’ll probably have to set both clocks at the same time. Generally it’s pressing the final “set” button that resets the hidden second timer internally, so you have to like… press both buttons at the same time. Alternately, you can set the first clock, then set the second clock a minute fast and only press the final button right when the first clock catches up.
Or you can just like… not care, because time is all relative and appliance clocks are never accurate.

I recently saw a youtube about coffee in Yemen, showed how they use the dried fruit part off the coffee "cherry" to make tea. In the morning they have coffee, at lunch a mix of coffee and dried fruit tea and, in the evening just the dried fruit tea.

To change the time to make them the same you have to switch the time on one of them damn near exactly when the other one changes.
So if your microwave is at 1:59
And your stove is at 2:00
As soon as your stove hits 2:01
You’ll change the time on your microwave to 2:01
And then they’ll be seconds off instead of a minute

Hmmm now what to do with all them dates, you can chop them up and add to muffin mix, sprinkle on ice cream, mix with walnuts for a snack, topper on cereal, to fruit salad, and in date and walnut cake! If you have just way too many what about taking them into your coffee shop and using them in people's drinks as toppings or as a free snack bowl for customers or something?
Re your clock, what about just putting a piece of black card over it or perhaps you could get a small digital flat clock on Amazon and command sticky strip it on top? That's if you exhaust all the tech options of trying to sort it out?

@@TamarLitvot There used to be a small Diner at the top of Cajon Pass (Hwy15) in California called the Summit Inn. They served Date shakes and they were amazing. Sadly, it burned down and was never reopened. I always stopped if I was in the area. A little nutty, a little fruity, good sweetness, sort of like a fig newton flavor. Something I would never have ordered, but my friend made me and he was right!

I'm not into teas that much. However, this does pose a question that I had never previously thought about. Can you roast coffee beans in a standard oven? I can't really fork out the money for an actual roaster of any size.

    • @cldream

I believe you can roast them, if you can roast coffee in a pan over a stovetop. I've seen videos of people roasting coffee in an electric-powered hot air popcorn popper machine.

Tips on your clocks being out of sync:
    #1 stop caring
#2 everytime someone mentions it, explain the physics behind time dilation until they either leave or pass out
    #3 stop caring
#4 go through the process of setting the microwave 2 minutes ahead of the oven to the point of being one click away from starting the clock. wait for the oven to catch up to the microwave and start its clock at the exact instant

I tried this once to surprise my wife who wanted to lay off the coffee (even decaf) for a while.
I recognize the taste notes you described and we both really, really loved the taste of the drink.
But the mouthfeel was horrible, it was unbelievably dry, like the sensation you might get from grape juice, but to the n-th degree.
Probably didn't roast hard enough but unfortunately there's no do-overs since I broke my Hario Skerton's burr in twain during the process and I don't want to destroy my more expensive grinders.

Well if you accumulate pits over time in a freezer jar then you'll have a drink once the bag of good dates is finished. Just as an added extra and not an end goal this is fine.

How to fix the time: scream endlessly into the void. Time is not real. The void will consume us all. Also for the spare dates might I recommend stuffing them with bleu, feta, or goat cheese and an almond(optional), wrapping them in bacon, stabbing them with a toothpick, and cooking them in the oven at 425f until they become food.
