Have you ever wanted to make coffee with a straw? No? Well, do you want to anyways? This was a pretty nifty little brewer. It's fun, it's practical for camping, and it brings me joy. Would I ever use it again? Maybe not but I'm more than happy to have finally tried it.

Hey! I have one of these (: the two problems you had are easily solvable (re: over-extraction and heat)
either use a lower temperature water with a medium grind, or just add a splash of colder water when you're done brewing which slows the extraction rate down and cools the temp!
I like the idea of a splash of cold water after, will try that and report back!
@@morgandrinkscoffee sweet! also, pinching the silicone tip helps regulate how much coffee you’re getting in your sip when you’re still trying to figure out if it’s too hot to drink or not 😋 takes a little getting used to when the “lip test” is how we’re used to testing heat, but reducing how often I expose my teeth to coffee staining seems worth it

The double walled cup is probably also keeping the coffee warmer for longer. I imagine in a normal mug you'd lose a lot more heat at the start of the brew, and this was probably the situation they would have used for testing.
Ah yes The Braw, not needed all the time but definitely useful. When acquiring your first braw it is important to check for size and fit. Different cup sizes need different braws. Don't be afraid to get many braws to see which you prefer, and which is the best fit for you. Everyone has a different size and color braw, don't be afraid to experiment.

When you read the instructions, they said to add milk (and your desired sweetener) at a certain point - I think that's essential to making this work as intended. Adding milk (or cream, or oat milk) would reduce the temperature and almost completely stop the brewing, meaning you could sip at your own pace. I saw another commenter mention adding cold water at that point; that would help but not slow the infusion as much. The proteins in milk make a huge difference. I think the instructions should emphasize that adding something at that point is not really optional unless you want a very overextracted cup of coffee.

I did this with a bombilla (Spanish for straw) and a mate, and it wasn't bad at all. Pretty crazy

Thats a "bombilla" 2.0 lets say, we in the Rio de la plata (Uruguay & Argentina), some in Brasil and Paraguay too use it to drink Mate

In the Czech Republic it is quite common (mainly with older generations) to drink coffee with the grounds still in the cup, without a straw. Yes, you get a healthy portion of grounds at the end.

People camping usually have stainless or enameled steel mugs. These would allow the coffee to cool more quickly than a double-walled glass beaker. This might help as the coffee could get to a comfortable temperature before it became over extracted.
I had a similar thought. Single walled mug, and or slightly cooler water temperature would probably help, but not replacing my aeropress with this anytime that I can see.
You could also just brew at a slightly lower ratio then top up with a bit of cool water to bring temp down. If you have a good grasp of brew temp, ratio and grind size you won't really ever overextract with this, just like a cupping, I cup professionally all the time and we pour boiling water on the coffee and are still drinking said coffee 30 min down the line to analyze it, and the really good coffees stay good way beyond even that point!
Regarding on the tip temperature, it depends on how is contructed. Here in Argentina the straws are from nickel-silver or iron. We drink mate at 85 degrees celsius (185 F) and the tip is not hot to the lips.
This seems like the best use for this is for cold brew where you steep in a mason and then add ice and drink in through the Jogo without the need to filter.
Do not touch the hot shaft. Do not grasp the hot shaft firmly. Do not grab anywhere but the soft tip.
I think really the benefit is with cold drinks. Brew a hot drink while camping, maybe throw in some ice if you have some or creamer etc to cool it down a bit/slow the extraction and not have to worry about the mess as much. One main criticism is the issue of cleaning the cup afterwards. Coffee grounds are fine-ish down most sinks, but will eventually clog etc. A French press should make it easy to remove a puck of sorts/majority of the coffee grinds afterwards to throw, but this would need scraping pretty quickly. Interestingly enough, I wonder if there would be benefits to this with extra flavorings. Like cinnamon sticks or chocolate nibs to add something extra that would get filtered out by the straw strainer. I assume this would be pretty versatile too if you're someone who drinks tea and coffee. You can't win everything when downsizing, so I see this as a much more realistic camping travelling item since it is so small and fairly easy to use/clean.

In the crazy 90s, we used to do something like this with our coffee presses. We’d brew normally, but only plunge about 3/4 of the way down. The first and second cups were normal. The third cup was a bit more adventurous. The fourth, we’ll, that sucker was dark and deep. Definitely not for everyone.

The beauty of immersion brewing is that water has a finite ability to absorb/extract. With the proper grind and water to coffee ratio is is impossible to over extract when immersion brewing. You need enough grounds so the water hits equilibrium before it can over extract. If you are over extracting you need more grounds or a coarser grind. When you hit the perfect grind and ratio the grounds can sit in the water all day and it won't extract any of the bitterness because the waters ability to carry solubles is completely maxed out.
My first take with no information was "I do not want to drink my coffee through a straw." After watching the video, my initial take remains unchanged. I think people underestimate the importance of aroma in perception of flavor, something a straw is terrible at.

I may actually want to try this, just because I love coffee gadgets. I love my Bripe, I love my Phin, I love my Picopresso, and I think I'd really like a Braw (I'm with you, they misnamed it). I think in the wild, I'd probably brew a slightly more concentrated coffee, let it do its 3 minute brew time, then add a bit of cold water just to cool the coffee down and make it more easily drinkable quickly. That'd be a fun experiment to run.
I think that adding [cold] milk at the 4 minute mark like they suggest would be the way to go for the br (ew str)aw. Cold milk makes all coffees crushable.

I can see that used for coffee that have been brewed previously so that it can catch any grounds that were left behind after the brew.
Oooo... I bet this would be handy when i make tea and the tea bag breaks and I'm too lazy to make a new cup. Or when my cold brew strainer part flops off and spills grounds and i don't want to carefully pour it through a filter. Or if you're eating soup but don't want the chunky parts. The "braw" would actually be pretty handy in my household with picky kids and clumsy me. 🤣

i don’t even drink coffee, but love watching your videos. i feel like this could be a great solution for people with sensory issues or just dislike the grittiness of french press coffee but really enjoy that type of brewing! it would be one more way to ensure that you wouldn’t end up with grounds in your mouth that weren’t caught by the filter
Definitely a "solution looking for a problem" situation.
When you sip hot beverages from a cup, you incorporate quite a bit of air into the liquid which cools it down A LOT. Sipping through a straw allows for absolutely no air incorporation and therefore the beverage will be much hotter when it reaches your palate
With Yerba Mate, there is a special cup called a gourd, that is smaller than a regular cup. You generally add smaller amounts of water to the tea and drink it as it extracts and then add more, to avoid the problem of having to drink a huge cup of over-extracted hot tea. Maybe with some playing around you could get a similar effect with this.
Try the "French Pull". Not kidding. Put the plunger down, then add coffee, water, brew and pull the filter up and grinds out (it helps to stir first so the grinds collect in the middle as you pull the filter out) Doing that and letting the brewed coffee sit for several minutes lets most of the fine grit settle to the bottom of the press and not in your cup.
If you are camping or hiking and have room for a kettle to boil water for sure you have room for either a percolator or a camping french press, I've been using a very basic coleman tin percolator i've been using for the last 13 years to make campfire coffee, it's full of bumps, but still makes great coffee without overextracting

I immediately backed this after seeing Hannah's friend on her channel. I gotta say, I am a big fan of the straw, just for the ease of it, and found that sweet spot of medium-large grind and letting the coffee steep before I even put the straw in my cup. So far, I love it for days I can't be bothered to go through a whole process, but I also don't drink hot coffee very often. Definitely going to try a cold brew version soon after reading all the comments :)
I think the Jogo's team is missing a key component of their potential market: people who want decent coffee, but also need to get to the office ASAP. Imagine, you've slept in, and you're rushing to get ready. About halfway through your morning rush, you set the kettle and grind some coffee and get back to the rush. Right as you head out the door, you throw your coffee, hot water, and Jogo into your cup and get in the car. At some point during your commute, you have a decent cup of coffee to sip on during the sleepy ride in and as you sit down and begin your work day.
It's like. . . . . a bombilla. . . . but for coffee. (Bombillas are basically a special straw with a filter at the bottom used for drinking yerba matte. Some have a scoop/spoon shaped filter at the bottom to help with shaping the "water hole" at the bottom of the matte "mountain")

Yup, it's bombilla with finer mesh. TBF the price is in a ball park of decent bombilla so it's kind of innovative use of old technology for something different not a scam

Ahh I'm so excited!! Have you considered trying out a South Indian filter coffee maker? It's what got me into coffee in the first place and is one of my favourite coffee making methods!

You could just stick a tea filter into the coffee and use a normal straw. I would never drink coffee through a straw because I prefer the coffee quite how and I like to slurp it when I'm alone.
my first thought was overextraction, seems I might not have been far off. its a cool idea but its definitely a toy more than a useful tool it seems since I would prefer a French press or an aero press for camping (a straw camping would probably get lost easily ). cool toy though, what will those crazy eggheads think up next....
Totally love mine. I'm using it at home and I thought it would be a camping only coffee toy). You need a low fines grinder but it's quite good. And you barely get any extraction once the coffee is under 130 degrees unless it's sitting for a very long time.
*I got it as a way to save space for camping, along with having one less thing that'll break easily.
Seems more like it would be better for cold brew. Less need of actually filtering out the cold brew and extra container etc. If you are doing like one dose of cold brew in a 8 oz mason jar it make sense. Less fines too, since more coarser grounds.
In Brazil there is a beverage that is really a local staple for the south part of the coubtry that is mate tea leaves and it is traditionally poured on an wood cup with an straw that has an filter quite like the "Braw".

This seems like a weird "cowboy coffee straw". It seems like a solution in search of a problem, and not a well-executed one. It's basically the same price as an Aeropress but seems to produce worse results. If it came with a thermos so you could actually take it hiking and brew without a kettle, maybe it'd be worth it?

I have one, and I quite like it. After dialing in grind size and water temperature, it’s pretty great in my opinion. I also use it for tea, which it is arguably more useful for. I use it mostly on the go or late at night though.

When drinking without a straw you can take in air at the same time, which cools it off.
You have reviewed a few products that you commented might work well for camping. You also made s’mores once in your kitchen, using, as I recall, a blowtorch to toast marshmallows. Perhaps next spring, you should go camping and try a couple of coffee products in the field. Also, marshmallows toast much better over a wood, or even charcoal fire.
So, here in southern Brazil we have chimarrão and terere. They are teas made with erva mate and served in a cuia and taken with a bomba. The bomba is very similar to this straw, it is she who filters the liquid and everything. Maybe one day you should try !

I bought this also. My thoughts on it are the same as Morgan. It tastes bitter after a little while. I use cream so that helps a bit. It would be OK for travel with a colapsable silicone coffee cup, which I have. But its not my fav.
I think that keeping the JoGo in the cup while it brews would keep the straw also very hot, so maybe only inserting it into the cup when you are ready to drink, may help a little bit 🤷🏻♀️ maybe?
Might benefit for similar brewing method to the Bride. A lower brew temperature and smaller overall brew.
I don't tend to have over extraction issues with my bripe so might work
I use leave-no-trace principles when I'm hiking. I can't see how I would clean my cup then pack out the used grinds. I'm probably going to stick with VIA instant. Thanks for the video. I was intrigued by the product.
I would recommend using it without an insulated cup. It cools down faster and brewing slows down faster. Just like cupping. You do not get over extraction there.

This was my thought too. I have the bottle that makes cold brew very easy, but for anyone who still makes it in a mason jar, they could just use this instead of straining.
At first, as was already said, drinking coffee through a straw is not very desired. However...I was just thinking if applying James Hoffmann's french press technique would help. Breaking the crust, and letting the grounds sit and stick closer together should quite effectively slow down the extraction kinda like when doing cupping. I actually forgot about my FP for about a half hour once and it still tasted quite nice.
maybe while camping you may brew coffee in a pan or something bigger and then after "ideal time" just pour it into more mugs for more people and leave most of the used coffee grounds in the pan. And then they may use the straw just to filter the residue in their mugs.
My initial thoughts was also around the over extraction unless you can drink it real fast and the problem of it being too hot to drink through a straw (when you sip from a cup, you tend to pull in cooler air which mixes with the coffee to rapidly cool it while it enters your mouth). If I had experimented with this product, I would have tried reducing the temperature to start with... something closer to "drinking from a straw" temperature. It would take longer to fully extract, but the window for drinking it would also be longer. Not sure how well it would extract with a cooler temperature, but it might be doable.
I always shake my head a little when seeing a new device like this for the simple reason that I feel that overextraction for heated full immersion brewing has been solved elegantly twice already. (aeropress, clever drip) I look forward to a day when I feel like solution #3 has fallen from the sky into my lap but as for now... today is not that day. I wish the design team well in their pursuits!
If you start with cooler brew water, al la classic Aeropress method, you might get to drinkable temperature before the coffee over-extracts. Might have to extract longer before first sip, but that just equates to a cooler first sip. The classic Aeropress temp is 80C, 176F. Needing a controlled temperature that is not boiling does cut into the campfire simplicity appeal.

Given how fine the filter is, I can see it being used to brew full tea as well, really interesting product.
In Argentina that thing exists since earths beginning, we use it for Mate drinking and we call it Bombilla
My Google really just set a timer lol. I wrap the mesh plunger with a coffee filter and then plunge my French press. It works amazing.
I can’t drink hot coffee with a straw. For me, hot coffee is as much about experience as flavor. A warm cup, a quick sip, stir the spoon as it cools. I’d be the guy who melts his mouth with the first use of a straw.

Maybe it would work better with cold brew since cold brew extracts so much slower, so make the cold brew, let it sit for 12-24 hours, add your stuff and then drink?

My work-around was to use warm-hot water and brew a little longer.
Would it be better if it was treated more like a cupping? For cupping, the grounds would sink to the bottom, and prevent it from over extracting too much. Then, the jogo needs to be sipped from on top, so that it doesn't disturb the bed of coffee at the bottom.
I think it will be perfect in homemade cold brew🤩

I routinely use metal straws to drink my hot coffee (yay overly sensitive teeth) and uh yeah the silicon tips are borderline necessary. I haven't been "burned" per se but it's definitely not pleasant without it

I think someone already said this but it really look like a bomba wich we use to drink chimarrão (or mate), it's a beverage from the south of Brazil and Latin America in general. It originated from Guarani tribes who lived in the area that today is Paraguay and was spread by the Jesuit priests during the period of their mission to "civilIze" the those tribes.

Hahahah thats a “bombilla”. In Argentina we drink something called “mate” that is herbs brewed with almost boiling water and we drink it with the bombilla so we dont drink the herbs.
Its the exact same design so i think they took the idea from it.
Oh and yeah, you are not supposed to touch the metal part. If you drink mate you CANT move the bombilla. Its denied. It’s frowned upon. You get expelled from drinking any more mate and some bad words too.
