+awesometacular Well it can be argued that at their level of sophistication, living crystals and liquid metals meld seamlessly into one another :)The materials of the future (for us) will be "programmable matter" that can take on different properties at our command. Claytronics, quantum wells, synthetic organisms and liquid metal robots are examples of such a concept that current scientists are trying to develop. It's reasonable to assume that a civilisation with technology as advanced as that of the Kryptonians have already taken this concept to a further extent, so that their materials can flexibly combine the functions of living crystals, liquid metal and much much more.
+awesometacular well Science Fiction usually becomes Science Fact I mean just look at the moon landing, in the 1800s that was thought to be fiction yet that didn't stop us from getting there
Mahesh C Achuthanna Lex luthor's armour is far more advanced than any kryptonian tech because it also uses new god tech(I.e. tech from Darkseid's world)
Incredible scene. The soundtrack as it builds up to Jor-El setting up the history lesson is perfection. This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie followed by my favorite: Superman takes Flight.
This is why I like Superman more than Batman. People may say that Superman is too over powered and nobody can match him therefore Batman is better but that is not what Superman is about. Superman is a better inspiration than Batman because Superman inspires hope and good feelings in people. He gives them inner strength to find the good in themselves and stand together. Superman has always been about his continuing and developing relationship with humanity and the lengths he will go to keep them safe. Superman's main struggle has always been trying to achieve and become the perfect symbol for humanity to latch on to.
+Alexander Wang Gang i like them both because they both represent something good. batman represent the determined pursuit of true justice for those who deserve it and superman represents the equally determined struggle for the principles of hope , honesty and compassion that makes good men into great men.
+Lord Harbinger agreed, and he technically is over powered but its not a problem like everyone thinks, he kinda needs to be with the enemies he faces, and me personally i've never like batman, nothing that pisses me off about him or anything, just never been a fan
that is not necessarily true about batman. his father was a doctor who provide aid to people who couldn't afford regular treatment and his mother was a crusader against child abuse and it's because of that that batman fights spare others the same fate as him. both he and superman represent something good even though they both have their flaws. batman represent the unyielding pursuit of justice for those who deserve it and superman represents the equally unyielding struggle to uphold the virtues of honesty and compassion in the darkest and most difficult of times.
He's referencing a crazy nut of a movie producer who wanted Kevin Smith to write a superman script where the villain fights a polar bear in the fortress of solitude.
Clark stepping out in the Superman costume for the first time is such an epic image and Hans Zimmer's score really makes it feel like a real epic moment. The man of steel has officially arrived to take his place as earth's greatest hero.
The sadness of this scene is found in the inability to change and the hope that the last chance for change in found in the lost of everything that made you unique. The dialogue between jor-el and Kal-El is a mixture of sadness and redemption. Sadness in the kryptonians inability to change and the chance that Redemption can be found in Kal-El life on Earth.
+spideyfan2002 Okay, I'll start a conversation, if that's okay :) I disagree with your point about Jor-El being a Hypocrite. He never forced Clark to be Superman. He didn't make him put the suit on. He didn't say that Clark had an obligation to do anything. Clark has a natural instinct and wanting to help people. He's been looking for answers all his life about who he is and who his parents were and why they sent him to Earth. And here, the Jor-El program is giving him the answers he's been seeking all his life. And he's been told that his family heritage is that of promoting goodness and hope. And again, he never told him "you have to" or "you must" or you will". He's giving him the chance to forge his destiny. Not because he was told to do it, but because it's what he wants to do. Jor -El kept saying "You CAN embody the best of both worlds." "Not IF you guide them, Kal." "Not IF you give them hope." "That's what you CAN bring them." It wasn't a command, it was a choice.
Hmm there's an interesting thought, if the kryptonians spread out and explored the galaxies long ago in the past it's highly likely they encountered a yellow star at some point so there may have been other supermen who lived long before Kel-El on other alien worlds but with the same power. There could even be a colony somewhere filled with them. I'd love if they worked that into the story some day.
3:50 Jor EL: You are as much the child of Earth now, as you are of Krypton. You can embody the best of both Worlds. Also Jor EL: Look at the cool suit we made for ya. Wooooo!
Gustav Ramirez the music score i get goosebumps when jor-el told what the s was for and when the part when clark put on those glasses at the last scene
asianfireflie Ah, yes, the Superman theme... I actually listen to it often on UA-cam, when I'm looking for inspiration.... I guess that it's sheer "epicness" and emotion are what truly depicts Superman as Earth's Greatest Hero! :))
0:36 - "If only Lara could have witnessed this." Um, she was likely pregnant for at least 9 months, what there was no time to copy her consciousness like yours too?
Fathers,, if they only knew how powerful their words are. It’s something about Dad’s, when a child hears how much their Dad believes in them and no matter what, they speak empowerment into their lives, it’s like, you feel you can take on the whole world. I tell my kids, “You were born to be great. You will be a better person than me. I believe in you. No matter what you face in life, I know you won’t fail. Whether I finish my journey with you or before you complete yours, I’m going to be cheering you on to victory.”

It always astonished me when I learnt people hated this movie, its arguable one of the best super hero movies to this date. To the action scenes to the movies soundtrack/score, it really is something else. Russel Crowe killed it as Jor EL too.

I remember when I saw it in theaters. I was 10 years old, and I had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until Clark's first flight that it clicked in my head, "...Wait a minute, is this a Superman movie?"
Apart from the Richard Donner movies and Superman the animated series where Jor-El was a quiet and peaceful scientist, most verisons of him in his AI form especially in Smallville made him this cold, emotionless figure who was always harsh towards his son and would constantly "punish" him. I like this version that they did for Man of Steel where there was a balance to his character, he was a kind and quiet man with a heart of a warrior who would do absolutely anything to protect the people he cares about. Russell Crowe delivered a fantastic performance and nailed it perfectly. His portrayal of Jor-El was superb and really came across as a true father figure who only wanted what was best for his son.
At first when I saw Henry's new costume I didn't like it I was like "Where is his red underwear?" that not Superman. But after seeing the movie & really seeing the costume I had a change of heart I loved the new suit. I saw Superman's new suit in a comic & on an animated TV I realized Superman needed to change his suit up a bit.
The actor who played superman Henry Cavill once participated in a film shot in his school in the UK as one of the crowd actors when he was just about 15 years old, and one of the actors was Russell Crowe. He asked Russell Crowe how to be an actor and Russell Crowe encouraged him and sent him some snacks, CD and his autograph. And now they are playing father and son in a blockbuster movie in Hollywood. How nice.
Aside from the controversial killing of Zod (which I shan't comment upon), this was the best Superman film. Reeve was a nice guy, but the movies were campy schlock.

Brandon I agree, a lot of people didn't like this movie, I loved it, I saw it twice in theaters, I even like this a little more than Wonder Woman which I love.
Dark Knight beats this
Dark Knight isn't part of the dceu though. However I agree TDK its the best comic book movie of all time.
Chris Stanley I never said it was part of the DCEU, you said this was the best DC movie and the Dark Knigjt beats this bc it is also a DC movie
@@leifsather2989 I agree dark Knight is still unbeatable to this day but I love this superman over all other movies in DC universe which nolans batman isn't included. Think we can both agree that all other DC movies are pretty bad with the exception of wonder woman
Say what you will about this script, or Crowe's performance -- but this Jor-El soliloquy is tight, concise, to the point, and well delivered. I really enjoyed the Krypton exposition, and wish(ed) there had been a little more of it.
The script was great
Given the incompetence of the kryptonian government that's quite an insult to the ingsoc of 1984.
Russell Crowe is the greatest actor of our time. Any role he plays instantly becomes 1000x better.
Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe both were amazing as Superman's father.
The only thing I hate was Jor El being erased by General Zod, cause I really wanna see Russell Crowe in what could have been potential sequel as a hologram character.
Definitely
Henry Cavill is such a great Superman. I hope they never change it!
lol, can't tell if you're trying to troll me or if you haven't read the "Death of Superman" and "Superman Lives" comic.
Oof
Geralt of Rivia
😭😭😭
They just did...
So Kryptonian tech has gone from crystal growth to liquid metal, I'm good with it.
***** I love it. I hope they use this stuff for Cyborg and Metallo
Baoqing Ye So this science fiction isn't quite as fiction as I thought.
+Galileo Galilei maybe nothing ? Because its sci fi >.>
+awesometacular well Science Fiction usually becomes Science Fact I mean just look at the moon landing, in the 1800s that was thought to be fiction yet that didn't stop us from getting there
Remember seeing him come out wearing the suit for the first time getting goosebumps
I came.
“What if the child aspires to become something greater?”
I love this part of the movie. The soundtrack and everything is just so perfect!
Russel Crowe gave the the best performance along with Kevin Costner. Really liked the movie
Those Kryptonian space suits at 1:34 really remind me of Lex Luthor's power armor.
Technically by getting into the Kryptonian ship or the Fortress of Solitude he learned about them and made his suit based on those suits.
Mahesh C Achuthanna Lex luthor's armour is far more advanced than any kryptonian tech because it also uses new god tech(I.e. tech from Darkseid's world)
I thought the same thing, when I saw that!!
I kinda wish the suit that Jor El gave him didn't have a cape to it and Martha makes the cape out of the blanket that he arrived to Earth wrapped in.
That wouldn't be as ideal because he's supposed to do all sorts of crazy things that would cause cloth made by humans to tear up easily.
GFA Showcase The blanket wasn't from Earth
JeffTheDudeAbides Oh sorry, i misread.
GFA Showcase all good.
that would be awesome
Henry Cavill is an amazing actor
Pheromone his acting when he kills Zod was the best imo
Superman means hope, Batman means you're about to get the crap kicked out of you.
+Austin Smith Batman is a symbol of fear. The El-symbol means hope. However: Superman I think represents both hope and prosperety.
technically Batman represents Justice. Superman - Hope, Wonder Woman - Truth
Srikanth Menon Superman = Sionman
Angelus what's that?
Srikanth Menon The book of Sion is what a radical jewish fraction is following. It's called: zionism.
Incredible scene. The soundtrack as it builds up to Jor-El setting up the history lesson is perfection. This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie followed by my favorite: Superman takes Flight.
Casting Russel Crowe as Jor-El was absolutley genius!
"Who are you?""
*My name is Jorelus EL Maximus Krptonius, Father to Superman,*
Lmao
Gold
“Husband to a murdered wife”
Krypotinus sound like a good name.
Or Kryptonimus.
Through the guidance of his biological dad and foster dad, Superman had taught to all of humanity the meaning of virtues.
+Lord Harbinger I agree. He also want us to believe in something we wish we can do.
+deandre hollaway batman symbolizes the darkest of humanity and cynicism. Batman's origins share similarities w Superman but that's about it.
that is not necessarily true about batman. his father was a doctor who provide aid to people who couldn't afford regular treatment and his mother was a crusader against child abuse and it's because of that that batman fights spare others the same fate as him. both he and superman represent something good even though they both have their flaws. batman represent the unyielding pursuit of justice for those who deserve it and superman represents the equally unyielding struggle to uphold the virtues of honesty and compassion in the darkest and most difficult of times.
This movie truly is a master piece. from the graciously delivered dialogue to the epic fight scenes
Thanks zack for this gem and fuck all the haters
Absolutely
Hahahahaha your franchise HAS FAILED!! WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!
#DCEUsucks #DestroyTheSnyderverse
polar bears are the fiercest killers in the animal kingdom 😂
you are seeing to many Discovery Channel's
documentarys
He's referencing a crazy nut of a movie producer who wanted Kevin Smith to write a superman script where the villain fights a polar bear in the fortress of solitude.
Steve Brooks No hippos are
fuckin john peters...
and a giant spider
My hat off to whomever thought of and created the special effects in the background as Jor El describes the history of Krypton. Very original.
A showing that polar bear hop over from Ice to ice was better than the entire Justice League movie
It's the little things that count
Russell Crowe acting is amazing. He nail it.
Clark stepping out in the Superman costume for the first time is such an epic image and Hans Zimmer's score really makes it feel like a real epic moment. The man of steel has officially arrived to take his place as earth's greatest hero.
@ 2:40 is Richard Donner's Kal-El baby ship! Awesome movie!
My first viewing, I didn't pick up on scenes like these. Absolutely great scene, love Jor-El's message about hope.
I love this portrayal of Jor-el in man of steel then in the 1978 film. I don't hate it.
+spideyfan2002
Yet that was exactly what this Superman was doing even before he meet Jor-El!
+spideyfan2002 Please, share with me your feelings about Man of Steel. I promise a civil discussion free of name-calling and fanboy douchebaggery.
+spideyfan2002 Okay, I'll start a conversation, if that's okay :)
I disagree with your point about Jor-El being a Hypocrite.
+spideyfan2002 Besides, Jor-El in the 1978 movie didn't give him much of a choice.
Marlon Brando had presence in that film. I simply don't feel
that in this film.
4:40 "...but for first, don't forget to shave yourself before to wear that suit, because we have an iconography to keep..."
This is the best you can get out of the Superman concept if you want to ground it in reality. A Sci-fi epic.
The only movie in cinematic history that makes me cry like a 4 year old girl inside.
"Who are you?"
"My name, is Batman."
"I'm Batman"
Hmm there's an interesting thought, if the kryptonians spread out and explored the galaxies long ago in the past it's highly likely they encountered a yellow star at some point so there may have been other supermen who lived long before Kel-El on other alien worlds but with the same power. There could even be a colony somewhere filled with them. I'd love if they worked that into the story some day.
Perhaps they actually exist.
I love Kryptonian technology. The visual history of Krypton and its people is outstanding!
3:50 Jor EL: You are as much the child of Earth now, as you are of Krypton. You can embody the best of both Worlds.
Also Jor EL: Look at the cool suit we made for ya. Wooooo!
It wasn’t specifically for Superman because the ship is thousands of years old. So it’s like an old family relic
This movie is a masterpiece IMO, never understood why people hated it so much
a great film indeed
asianfireflie
That is an understatement! :)))
Gustav Ramirez one of the best films ever. john campea is right
asianfireflie
Indeed... Hence, we can look forward to DC's Cinematic Universe surpassing Marvel's in a couple of years! :)))
Gustav Ramirez the music score
i get goosebumps when jor-el told what the s was for and when the part when clark put on those glasses at the last scene
asianfireflie
Ah, yes, the Superman theme... I actually listen to it often on UA-cam, when I'm looking for inspiration.... I guess that it's sheer "epicness" and emotion are what truly depicts Superman as Earth's Greatest Hero! :))
0:36 - "If only Lara could have witnessed this."
Um, she was likely pregnant for at least 9 months, what there was no time to copy her consciousness like yours too?
CCJJ160Channels you should watch HISHE man of steel
BlackLight 18 What's HISHE?
How It Should Have Ended
BlackLight 18 I'll check it out, thanks man!
Anytime
Here late 2019 and still one of my favourites
That smile on his face when he learns his biological name.
This movie is HIGHLY underrated
“To see you standing and grown into an adult. If only Lara could witness this.” My favorite quote of all time! It reminds me when I met my elementary teachers when they saw me as a young adult!
It always astonished me when I learnt people hated this movie, its arguable one of the best super hero movies to this date. To the action scenes to the movies soundtrack/score, it really is something else. Russel Crowe killed it as Jor EL too.
This movie will age very well
Love the architecture of the scout ship.
Anybody else notice that everything is mirrored, the "S" is backwards on the flag, Jor-els chest, supermans suit.
It's not in the movie backwards. For some reason it's reversed in this clip.
best movie..ever---
Wrong
Dear God, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.
LOVED this movie!!!!!
Loved this movie
He doesn't have the same presence as Brando but damn did Crowe do Jor'El justice.
Brando was good for the original Jor-El which was inspired by the early comics. This one is more modern.
3:48 Well, there is Supergirl.
MasterJo Cohen well that’s true
in the prequel comics to man of steel, supergirl is the reason that ship is even on earth.
if DCEU considers the comic canon then, supergirl is put there acting like a normal person while all this was going on
I have so many questions... How do you spell my name? Kel, Kael, Kal?
Kal-el? I'm not too sure.
you're right
What kind of alphabet is that?
Spelled as *#*@+=
I read that as kale
See, that mercurial kryptonian tech?!? WOULDN'T THAT HAVE BEEN A COOL WAY TO MAKE BRANIAC FOR DAWN OF JUSTICE!?!?!
*DOESN'T THAT MAKE SO MUCH MORE FUCKING SENSE THAN LEX LUTHOR CREATING DOOMSDAY!?!?!?!??!*
They need to just create a Man of Steel 2 and forget Batman v Superman even existed
3:07 that question, and the questions in MOS and BVS amazing
Kal-El doesn't become Superman until the epilogue, when he's at the Daily Planet.
It’s ashame Jor-El’s ai was destroyed. It would’ve been awesome if we had scenes like this, with Jor-El talking about other parts of the dc universe, like Apokolips, Doomsday, or the Green lanterns, especially with this visually stunning manner of showing Kryptons history
I'm glad alot of people are coming back to man of steel and seeing it for the great film it realy is. It's just a shame about the rest.
One of my regrets in life will always be not seeing this movie in theaters when it came out
Facts
I remember when I saw it in theaters. I was 10 years old, and I had no idea what was going on. It wasn't until Clark's first flight that it clicked in my head, "...Wait a minute, is this a Superman movie?"
This film is a lot better when re-watched. Actually quite a good film the second or third time watching it.
Imagine if he was called “Hope man”
OMG! if you watch the deleted scene from JL the black suit is on the left side of this one!
I'm loving the idea that the black suit has always been on the ship but it simply wasn't shown to us in this sequence.
oh i see what you mean he probably knew about the suit already.
ZS Justice league
“Oh and be careful, I think Zod sent his son to the next town over from you”
The actor who played superman Henry Cavill once participated in a film shot in his school in the UK as one of the crowd actors when he was just about 15 years old, and one of the actors was Russell Crowe. He asked Russell Crowe how to be an actor and Russell Crowe encouraged him and sent him some snacks, CD and his autograph. And now they are playing father and son in a blockbuster movie in Hollywood. How nice.
4:20 According to Joss Whedon, its a pair of car keys now.
I like the scene when the world engine impacts and emitting smoke. Resembling human with his fabrics...
Aside from the controversial killing of Zod (which I shan't comment upon), this was the best Superman film. Reeve was a nice guy, but the movies were campy schlock.
+crabbieappleton Do not judge Christopher Reeve's movies out of context.
Remember back then campier movies were all people knew. THAT was the Superman they lived with.
Reeves' Superman is fun. Cavil's is a little bit more compelling and relatable (until BvS theatrical version had all the Clark Kent scenes cut out).
The DC universe had such a bright future at the stage......a squandered opportunity
Kal-El: Did you program my mom into the system as well, so I can interact with her too?
Jor-El: Ahhh.....
Jor-El:...I did, son but I don't think you want to see images of your mom in the buff!
Looking back I’ve got issues with Man of Steel (still a solid movie) but the one thing I wish we had more of was Russell as Jor. Would’ve loved for a sequel with him in it more guiding Kal.
"What if a child dreamed of becoming something other than what society intended for him or her? What if a child aspired to something greater?"
That right there is the very essence of Superman
Probably the best versions of Kal and Jor
