I'm 71 and once only considered this to be my father's music as I was absorbed with The Beatles and Rolling Stones as a teen. I learned my lesson long ago however and while I still love my Rock and Roll I also love this as well. I can't say how often I'll listen to Ray Eberle and others of the era and just drift away on a cloud. So glad we have these wonderful recordings preserved for all to enjoy and discover if they never have. My father played Ray Eberle records weekends in the 1950s when I was a kid so I had wonderful influences.

Grew up listening to big band and at 75 it is still my favorite. Have always loved listening to your Dad and his brother. Once In A While has always been a favorite. Thanks for this.

Dang! Did Ray Eberle ever get the short end of the stick! This guy was so easy on the eyes! So much more than Sinatra or Como and really had a better singing style. His screen presence charms the pants off of you. Doesn’t make sense that this guy didn’t go on to a much bigger career as a solo act after Glenn Miller double crossed him. This guy was like an undiscovered gold mine.

Thank you for the insight! While I agree with you, I know my father was grateful for the audiences that came until his final performance, two weeks before he was called home to be with God. We ARE blessed to have lived during his time here. Jan 🙂

Me too! The only reason I knew a bit about it was cause my Dad loved this music. Check out Bob Eberle and Helen O Cornell’s version of Tangerine. It was my Dad’s favorite song! ( had to go in an edit that it was Rays brother Bob that sang Tangerine.)

If it's any consolation to you, Fred Astaire considered Michael Jackson to be the finest dancer he'd ever seen. If you study Fred's dancing and then watch Michael's, you'll see many moves that, yep, they mirror Freds. It's amazing. I don't think Fred did the moon walk though! I've given up trying too.

When Glenn Miller was given virtual control over the Army Air Force musical direction he had a unique situation; he could recruit any musical talent he wanted that was serving in the Army Air Corp...which included some of the greatest talent from orchestras and symphonies across the country. The purpose of his task was to not only aide morale of those serving at home, but also abroad, and demoralize the enemy. In doing so, Glenn assembled what many feel may be the finest group of musicians ever assembled of the big band era. So superb was their talent that the BBC was not keen to give them air time, as they far outshone the British talent that was available at the time. This became a political issue...but with more and more American's serving in Europe and with overwhelming English public demand, Eisenhower was insistent... and eventually the BBC relented in giving the band more air time, which along with American forces radio exposure made The Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band highly popular. The last recordings before Glenn's death in 1944 were at the Abbey Road Studios (later made famous by the Beatles).
This particular recording features Johnny Desmond on vocals, who was a terrific and underrated singer. It was likely recorded just prior to the band being deployed to Europe... and from the CBS program "Sustain The Wings". Later broadcasts from Britain would even feature vocals sung in German by singers like Desmond and Dinah Shore, and were intended to demoralize German troops by showing the capabilities of the Allies.

This is the music I was lucky to have when I was just a kid. Ray was so good with all the songs he did with Glenn
Miller and the Modernaires. I see he's got the Stardusters, I think with June Hutten, who came from Charlie Spivak's
orchestra, and Ray was still the great smooth singer as always. By the way, I still have the book "The Eberle Named
Ray" which I really enjoyed a couple of years ago.

There was some kind of disagreement betwen Glenn and Ray that caused him to leave that summer {Skip Nelson replaced him, before Glenn disbanded to join the Army Air Corps that September}.

Ray Eberle was your dad? That's so cool! He (Glenn Miller's Moonlight Cocktail), along with Mildred Bailey (Stop the Sun, Stop the Moon), were my introduction to old music. It's been five years since I discovered him. I have encountered so many beautiful songs from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s and It's all thanks to his wonderful singing.
