Good to see the the double track replacement north of Princes Risborough via Bicester, and the new junction, which is used for services between Marylebone and Oxford. The Chiltern Railways depot at Wembley is relatively new as well. There was a minor error re the introduction of the first commissioning date of Marylebone IECC. It was actually August bank holiday weekend 1989 (I was there, around 05:00 when it came into service). It was a tiny stage geographically, as it was just between Amersham and just short of Aylesbury. However, it was complex enough for something that was novel, and it did have a boundary with London Underground, at Amersham (the other one being at Neasden). At that time, Marylebone IECC was only the second one ever brought into use, the other one being one of the earlier stages of Liverpool Street, out as far as Bethnal Green.

Don’t even go there. Chiltern have gone from getting to London in 1hr 20 to now 2 hr 5 minutes and crawling between stations. On top of that, passengers are now paying more in their tickets for a slower service and it’s not the best, anymore.
I travelled this line before I retired in 2009, and remember it being very overcrowded with standing room only leaving London Marylebone. But can anyone tell me - Was this line ever considered for a substantial upgrade instead of building HS2? I know others have said the old Great Central line trackbed should have been used by HS2. It would be interesting to know.
They wanted to close it & replace it with a busway. But with the M40 & the Oxford Tube bus running very frequently, no real need. No idea why they simply haven't lengthened the "mainline" loco hauled service.
May 2023 - The operator has made the data-driven decision to make small reductions in service where appropriate. Chiltern Railways will no longer serve Kidderminster, but there is no reduction in frequency to Birmingham due to service enhancements by West Midlands Trains. There will also be small reductions in off peak services in Buckinghamshire, and between London Marylebone and Aylesbury

@@alexpeak16it won’t be even considered until 2030, the government have said that to chiltern. In the meantime, diesel is the way until then. No battery powered either, the hybrid wasn’t a success and is being transformed back to a diesel unit
Nice, a full journey of the Chiltern Mainline. I do like Leamington Spa station as it has it's GWR look to it. Surprisingly, a class 168 and not a class 68 and MK3 set for this journey. A brilliant journey along to the capital :-)
Thanks for a good presentation. I used to live at High Wycombe pre-privatisation when this was the Cinderella line of British Rail. Ancient DMUs and Marylebone was always under threat of closure but a magnificent pint of Ruddles County in the pub on the station. What a difference under Chiltern Railways. There is also a plan, I don't know how 'firm' it is, to reinstate the fast through lines at Beaconsfield
Greetings Paul from Australia! Your videos just get better - this was a great run on a route that has a lot of interest for me having lived and travelled on it many years ago. Keep ‘Em coming👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for a great video. The Kidderminster-Brum stretch has changed a lot since I last travelled it (in 1982!). Just a couple of picky spelling observations - it's Beaconsfield with an 'a', and Gerrards Cross with another 'r' (as if 3 weren't enough!)
A Driver's Eye View i've been waiting so long to watch is finally here! I grew up on this line and remember my journeys between Kidderminster-Birmingham on the Class 150 Sprinters, 165 and 168 Clubmans! It brings back so many memories. Shame this part of the route is not featured on JustTrains Chiltern Mainline route for Train Simulator
Lovely video. And a piece of history. With the Chiltern service from Kidderminster to London withdrawn, Hagley's one direct service to London a day (with no direct return) is now history. I'm glad there is this record, not least so that it will be possible to show people in the future that a Hagley-London direct service did actually exist!
Lol. Going through the Hampstead and St John' Wood tunnels could sometimes be a spooky experience back in the late 80's with the old slam-Door trains....especially as sometimes, the driver forgot to turn the lights on in some carriages!!
I have heard of couples managing to get into a non-corridor compartment of a slam-door train with no other passengers (usually on a late-night train) and making "good use" of the 12 minutes between Marylebone and Harrow-on-the-Hill - a sort of train equivalent of the Mile High Club ;-)
Line from Oxford to Leamington is mainly fright, so basically between anyho junction and Leamington has a lot running though. You can stand at my local Banbury and watch the containers come though with a 66

Still baffled at why it needs to go to Kidderminster. You'd think that, with all the new 196's coming in, WMR would run their own services. And then there's the EWR, which will be running WMR's 196's. D'oh!!!
Love the video & great commentary, but can you please do less cut-aways (especially ones of level crossings & bridges) as I feel this takes you out of moment.
Another very good, informative video. You might want to change the narrative about Marylebone and diesel trains to the fact it's the only non-electrified station. Euston has the Voyagers for Holyhead and Waterloo has the 159s for Exeter.
34:40 I'd just started at Uni in Birmingham many moons ago when the rebuilt Snow Hill Station was opened. What a grim, depressing piece of architecture it is and such a contrast to the elegance and light of Moor Street. Given its high usage and importance to Brum, hopefully it'll be replaced with something a bit more fitting some day. Great video!
We need the trains back to kidderminster and the catering trolleys restored on the long Distances trains to Birmingham Snow hill and stourbridge junction

Bledlow Ridge is pronounced Bled - low not bleed low! I live in High Wycombe and consider myself lucky to have one of the best lines in the country on my doorstep. It was a big mistake closing the line from HW to Maidenhead - being an old fart I just about remember it!
I *think* my very first train ride, at the age of 3, was on the Maidenhead-Wycombe line. We were living in Maidenhead and my grandparents came down to look after me when my mum was about to give birth to my sister. I can remember Grandpa taking me on a DMU with a forward view through the cab, and the driver spotted me at the inner window. At the next station he invited me into the cab to "help him drive" to the next station. It made my day. It would have either have been on the main line to Twyford or Slough, or else along the Bourne End / Wycombe branch. Even more exciting than getting home to find I had a baby sister ;-)
A nice ride through the centre of England with good view of the Chiltern Hills- thank you.
