I worry about mine regardless of everything I do too! I also think it's important for them to be able to go in and out on their own and have to say the plastic strip curtains are a brilliant idea! It's been over 40 years, but I vaguely remember my local harness track having the red coated rider. On flat tracks they would be the outriders who catch runaway horses etc. Not sure what purpose other than to add some pomp they'd have on a harness track. Maybe they went out of vogue so harness horses wouldn't see them anymore? I was wondering if they even knew it was Nigel under there, and were freaked out by that strange thing in his paddock. "Wtf is THAT, and what did it do to Nigel???"

I'm 73 and live in South (New)Jersey. I have 1 horse and some barn cats I care for. Our temperature rarely drops blow 0 so I can't imagine dealing with 50 below! Your video was very informative and greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing.
@@user-zl8mg3ll2j I would think it's in Fahrenheit, since Montana is of course in the USA. AS you likely know, -40 F and -40 C are the same. Minus 50 F is -45 C. But since I'm hundreds of miles north of Montana, in Northern Alberta, and it only went to -31 C here, or -24 F, I have to conclude that the Montana weather foecasts included windchill. There's a huge difference. A perfectly comfortable temperature of -15 C (+5 F), for a person in just a coat and scarf, is cold as heck when there's a wind! Then you need 2 pairs of pants (or tights, longjohns, whatever), 2 pairs of socks inside good winter boots, and 2 sweaters under your coat and scarf, plus mitts, NOT gloves, and a very good hat or insulated hood. But even then, if the wind is in your face you still feel cold. Only a full set up for skiing, with proper goggles and face protection, can make it comfortable. Ooops! Sorry! I got carried away there. But it's already done, so I'll leave it in here. For the most part windchill is negated inside a barn, but it's only partiallly negated in a run-in shed, especially depending on which way the shed faces. So it's good to see how this woman really does all that she can for them. Wild horses have none of this done for them. They do survive, but no doubt at times they really suffer a lot!
PS Y’all seen ALL the work she went thru to get the horses ready. Now imagine the expenses!!!! So I’m asking EVERYONE to please watch the ads all the way ( the aren’t bad ) and hit the like button and if you can get something off her amazon wish list. I’ve never had to take care of horses in such extreme cold. Though in my milder climate, cold or hot weather meant extra work & precautions. But WOW seeing you prep brings back memories and the realization that I had it easy! Really enjoyed seeing your routine. As always I’m so impressed by how well you care for your horses and Tiny 😊 You think about each one and what they need and want. Really special. Thanks you for this lovely video!
I was thinking much the same. We average in the 20s-30s, warm spells up into the 50s and one or two cold snaps that get to single digits but only last three or four days before getting up into the 30s which then feels like a heat wave because it's above freezing. Before we had the deicer we'd put the water buckets inside a larger container with straw. I'd read about people in Alaska doing that, the bucket inside an old huge tire stuffed with straw that actually insulated it enough to keep it from freezing solid. I was incredulous but it did work for us when it got into the teens at times. Schlepping water in gallon jugs to fill the water buckets when the hose and spigot were frozen. I need replacement parts currently and my hip hurts almost constantly. Just the thought of all that makes me hurt and exhausts me, as watching the CC doing all that exhausts me. Thirty years ago I would have seen it as a challenge and inconvenience. Now it would be an impossibility. My sister is stuck doing everything for the two ponies we have currently, and she's older than I am, but her body has held up better over the years.
I just found your channel and I can definitely relate! I live on a farm in northern Wisconsin where I take care of 6 horses and my two Great Danes by myself. It's so hard sometimes it almost makes me want to cry. But there's no time for that, as you well know. I guess sometimes the hardest things are also the most rewarding. I know I'm doing what I am meant to do right now and you clearly are too, and that's why we don't mind doing it. I can't imagine life without horses. My Grandpa used to tell me "this might look like work, but it's not really work we're doing - it's feeding our soul." And he was right. Take care of yourself as well as you do your horses! When the weather is harsh, get extra sleep, eat food that nourishes you, and surround yourself with only the people who make you feel good about the world. We owe it to our horses to take care of ourselves too. They need us to be at our best.
Oh, how well I remember all of that. I grew up on a ranch in the southern Black Hills in the 60's. My family raised herfords and bred AQHA horses. Although we seldom got the temps you do, we had our share of sub-zero days from about mid Dec through January. In the corral where we kept the milk cow, Dad installed one of the very first heated electric waterers in Custer county. The first ones were really small, but still quite the deal back then, and I remember as a kid, Dad and some of the neighbors standing around it one winter day and marveling over how that unit never iced up. We were part of the Angostura irrigation project and always had water tanks with pumps in the pastures, but silly kid that I was, I told Dad that we should "put 'lectric waterers all through the pastures". He just laughed, and today my cousins are still swinging mallets to break the ice out there :-) Anyway, we really enjoy your channel, and pray that you and your stock stay healthy through the winter.

Im in canada and I choosed shires. The largest drafts like the clydesdale and shires are pretty well equiped for winter . I do notice the shires get a thicker fur coat than clydes though. It always snow and hits -30 without windchill and I cant use blanket as the horses will sweat in them! This winter my mare grew a slightly thicker coat than last year, which scares me.

God knows how we got to this state - I'm of the Boomer generation, a childhood survived with no central heating or double glazing - and proper winters. Not saying everything was rosy, but we could cope with most things without falling apart.

We use those plastic curtains as well, it took a bit to get them used to them! Where we are in Southeast Iowa we have had over 30 inches of snow since early Friday morning and it was almost 50 below with the wind chill last night. I have had to wade through over 3 foot deep drifts twice a day to the barn because my husband has literally been working non stop at his job at the power plant to keep things running. My diesel tractor would not even start to be able to plow snow until I put a heater on it overnight last night.. It has been brutal, we only blanket one horse. We lost our oldest horse Jessie, a week ago this morning, sometime after midnight but before 7 am. He was almost 28. The sweetest and kindest and most boisterous beautiful buckskin gelding I have ever had the privilege of having here at our barn. Run free Jessie...😘😪
I was surprised to see that most of precautions and extra care you did for your precious herd was pretty much what I did for my horses! I moved from the West Side of Washington State to the East Side and there's a HUGE temperature difference. So people laughed and scoffed at me when I blanketed my horses and took all the extra care. Because they weren't used to the extreme cold temps on this side of the state. Plus my gelding was 25 years old. We have a barn that's got two huge, open stalls but because of the metal roof (I think that's why) the refused to go in it during a storm. So, just like you, I would lay awake most of the night and worry about Sassy and J.R. most of the night. I truly love and look forward to your videos!! 💜🐴💜
You are very right about the climates of the 2 areas. Proximity to a large body of water has a huge effect on the climate. Oceans have a moderating effect on neighboring land masses. So any continent or large island will have fairly temperate climates on all of the coastal areas, but will have extremes of temperature both high and low in the centre, if it's big enough. I'm from Winnipeg Manitoba, which is at the geographic centre of North America, so we have real whoppers of highs and lows! It very often gets to 38C or 100F in summer, and -30 C or -22 F in winter. It does get much hotter and much colder on occasion too. The temps I just gave are common ones that we see many times every year. They're not anywhere near the record highs or lows. It's almost as hot as N and S Dakota in summer, and a tiny bit colder in the winter. We're also at the north end of Tornado Alley. For people who don't know, part of the reason that Tornado Alley exists is the relative flatness, and the heat that comes from being in the middle of the land mass. Anyway, moving away from US's NW coast would make a huge difference in how the climate is. Other geographic factors would affect it too. Altitude, whether not it's mountainous, forests, large lakes, even presence and number of cities. You were so right worry about your older horse(s). I haven't had my own horses, but I've seen how weather affects older cats and dogs. Even if they never go outside, it still affects them in extreme ways! So does the extreme difference in daylight hours from summer to winter in northern areas. It's so good to see people here who love animals, and especially horses, as much as they deserve! They give so much to us, and they are such amazing creatures! Many kudos to you for caring so much! ❤❤❤
@@TheCleverCowgirl I haven't got the right words to express how much I admire the people who do whatever it takes to make their horses comfortable in this weather. Some people don't realize that horses lived outside for millennia, and most breeds are adapted to some weather exposure. They also don't know how psychologically horses need to be outdoors and to feel free. Or how deadly colic is, and how easily it can take hold and quickly kill a horse. With the causes of it being so varied (and seemingly mysterious), we do know that disruption of routine, especially dietary routine, contributes to it in a big way. So keeping them outside and active is so important. And then there are those who are simply trolls, and are just looking to upset people. To them it's a sport. Nothing they say is worth giving a hoot over. You are doing a fantastic job! And the proof is in the pudding. Your horses will ride this out in the most comfort that is possible to give them. Holy moly… I’m kicking myself today for not buying tank heaters. I figured I could “suck it up” for 2 days and just crack the ice. How quickly you forget northern living 😂😂 All I’ve done today is run around changing out water dishes and cracking ice for all the critters 🙄🙄🧤🧣🤦🏼♀️ Jokes on me! Needless to say I ordered myself tank heaters and heated water dispensers for the smaller animals

Water problem ... for ample warm/hot water, get a tank of sufficient volume to last a few days, set a pipe with a tap some distance away from it (a few feet) and also conect it to the main water supply so you can fill it. Build your muck heap around it (keeping it away from the outlet tap, of course) and by next winter, youll have a constant supply of warm/hot water with no running costs at all, which will be very little affected by the cold; as long as the muck heap is big enough, it - and hence the water - will retain heat wonderfuly well. Those curtains are an ideal solution for insulation - but what happens when it's windy? Don't they blow and flap when the wind changes direction?

I think you are doing a great job taking care of your horses. Those negative people are just unhappy and can move along. We do pretty much what you do for these cold snaps. Lucky for us here in Eastern WA we didn't get as cold as MT. But I still worry about our horses and minis. Especially the ones over 20.
We bring all 7 of the horses in the barn and we run propane heaters. Our aisle is concrete and we set the heaters there. We still had a waterer freeze during our very cold weather which needed the propane torch to thaw out.

Darling Clever Cowgirl, please do your best to IGNORE foolish and negative comments on your channel! I LOVE AND ADORE your respect and knowledge of these wonderful creatures called horses. I've learned so much from you and know how strenuous caring for animals is. I watched a channel with cows, in Michigan left out over the winter with snow up to their bellies and with a newborn calf out in it. I was in awe, as I come from upstate NY from a family dairy with Holstein cows, over wintered in a barn, we experienced 60 below temps. I learned years ago on a Canadian British Columbia horsy channel, who left his horses out all winter, with gobs on snow on their backs, without blankets and they loved being out in their paddocks. He stressed the importance of extra feed to keep them warm. I'm not sure how cold it got. Keep on doing what you're doing, I love the education and entertainment. God Bless!

I wnt thru a few years of taking care of my horses in Minnesota. Frozen auto waterers, hauling hoses, hay, it was no joke. I'm now in Missouri 😂 My Joker is a pig, both in his stall and with hay. He would just circle his stall until poop pee and shavings were mixed. It was disgusting. I would have to empty his whole stall every day. I only have Joker on a mash so I fill it at home and let it soak for 6-8 hours. I really feel for you, having so many horses to soak mashes for. It's 0 deg here today with wind chill 20 below. You do a phenomenal job for your kids. Of course you're going to worry about them, after all they're family. I bet you go out as often as possible to check on them and give them some hugs and scratches. I would. People who have never loved or cared about an animal, beit horses, dogs, cats or even guinea pigs have no clue of the dedication we animal lovers feel for our 4 legged children. My goodness, that's a lot of work to prepare for a deep freeze. It's fascinating to see everything you need to do to prepare the horses - not only keeping them warm but their nutrition needs. I love how you consider the needs for each horse. Some need blankets and some need different mash. The way you care for your horses is just extraordinary. Finally, it was interesting to see how the other horses reacted to seeing Nigel in a blanket. Skeletor was my son’s favorite cartoon character 35 years ago , so every time you say “Skeletor,” I hear it in my mind spoken in the awestruck, loving voice of a little boy wielding a plastic sword. The memory is so sweet, and it makes me love your Skeletor all the more.

I live in New England and my horses growing up were always Morgan’s. We had cold weather back in the day (0 deg was very cold) but other than putting on a blanket and giving them more shavings, we didn’t do too much preparation. Of course our horses were always inside at night. I’ve been watching more channels with a Western viewpoint and find the differences in equine husbandry very interesting. I wish I had been exposed to some of these alternative methods then.
Unfortunately, some people take great joy in maligning others and their efforts. Whatever nasty things they are saying is their problem, not yours. Nigel is a survivor for sure. You don't get to be a little old pony without being a survivor. I have no doubt he will survive his snug jammies and his cushy stall ;) Your boy Skeletor reminds me so much of my guy. Similar personality, always "helping", always looking for attention, always sure the World is Going to End if there is any little change in their immediate environment. Shows how intelligent they are when they notice EVERYTHING.
Here in Eastern Colorado we are also having a cold snap, although not as bad as yours; it’s not quite 20 below at night and a few degrees above zero in the day. However, the temperatures should be in the 40’s by Tuesday. My horses are 21 and 14yo. I don’t have stalls, but a barn for storage and a 24 X 10 converted Garage-in-a-Box for a run-in shed. I clean the poops out daily, but not the wet - I just put more shavings on top. I have about 18” of bedding in the shed right now. I feed the horses beet pulp, wheat bran and hay pellets once a day (the older horse also gets cracked corn twice a day). Their feed is supplemented with vitamins and minerals. The horse wears a blanket when he needs it. He has a medium weight Wug and a heavy WB ComFitTech. The Haflinger rarely wears a blanket, but right now he’s in his WB Hi-Neck heavy. It was brutal last night. Hay is pricey here (I’ve spent as much as $22.00 per bale) but I can get excellent high quality grass hay. I weigh the hay before I feed it, but when it’s this cold they pretty much get all they can eat. I put the horses in the 3-acre pasture during the day, but at night and in bad weather, they stay in the paddock, which is where their shelter is situated. The pasture is hilly and rocky, plus we have wild animals. Last month a horse was attacked by a mountain lion a few miles from here. So I like to keep the horses up by the house at night. You ought to put a couple of bucket heaters on your Amazon wish list. They get a bucket of water very hot in about 10 minutes.

Great job, we are well below zero here in Indiana. My boys will be in the barn due to health issues, they have heated buckets, they wear pajamas (barn blankets) that are a bit less restrictive than regular blankets. I will hand walk them up and down the aisles twice a day as well as give them treat balls etc. for mental stimulation. I add extra bedding and back around all the exterior walls and doors. I feed them 24/7 a blend of grass hay and a balancer twice a day. They have 12x24 stalls and can visit with each other through dividers. I hope every year it is enough , so far we have made it through some tough times . I do have a back up generator to keep the water pumps going. He is still a stallion. He would make a good teaser stud for a breeding farm. Other than that he probably couldn’t handle much. He has a lot of special needs now and I couldn’t imagine sending him away, he will stay with me until his little body wears out! 🥰
That was so satisfying to watch. Although your temps are brutal compared to anything I have dealt with, there is something I love about giving the horses tons of bedding and hay and blankies for a winter storm.

After watching your channel for a while I'm not surprised by the amount of forethought and care you put into an upcoming storm. Thanks for sharing your chores with us. Nigel has no regard for his new status, the little scamp! I'll try not to worry about Tiny, aaah. I don't have horses anymore but I feed hummingbirds year round. I have one heated feeder which is always available and bring the others in for the night then out before dawn after wrapping them in wool socks with handwarmers when we have freezing temps like now. ❤

You seem to have the same methods I have with horses. I have one horse with me. She is 24 years old. I am following the same guidelines in dealing with these sub-zero temps.
You opened our eyes at what it takes to keep everyone at your ranch healthy and warm! I LOVE that you know them well enough to be intuitive about their emotions like being scared of Nigels blanket! I used to run a barn in Massachusetts with 24 hour turnout too, it gets cold here in fact its snowing hard right now but nothing like Montana! I just can not imagine what anyone could say negative about you, you take wonderful care of your horses!
I live in SD. We get brutely cold, lots of wind and moderate snow. I have 2 horses and one donkey. My gelding is in his 30's, mare is about 12 and donkey is about 30. They have access to about 10 acres of pasture and a shelter that is open on the east side. I dont blanket them. My gelding is skinny. He has basically worn his teeth down. So he cant eat hay. But he gets grain, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp all soaked. My donkey gets free choice grass hay. I ration my mare because she gets fat on air and has insulin resistance. They all do well w my set up. So for now i wont change things. I do worry about my gelding but he is a tough old guy. I put a tank heater in their water tank when temps are below freezing. They have free access to mineral and salt blocks. I like your video. And your horses are cool. Idk that any one way of horse keeping is perfect. We work w what we have and do our best for our animals.

I just bought a trio of blankets yesterday for my mare, I didn't realize that it would get to negative -14 to -19 last night. She's getting hers on today. Where I board, he has too many to be able to all fit into the run in. So she's getting a mid weight blanket with a cotton sheet, when it starts to get -25, she'll get two thicker blankets. It'll be fun cause I don't think she's been blanketed before... Watching her wear fly boots the first time was hilarious
How funny about Skeletor’s reaction to Nigel’s blanket. All of them 15:53 were concerned to some degree. Oh well, everything worked out. And so much work! It takes a ton even before the below-freezing weather.

Hey clever cow girl, I think you do a wonderful job with your horses and give them everything they need. I have 5 horses 3 of witch I rescued from the meat man. I live I’m the uk 🇬🇧 . I lost my 36 year old TB mare back in January and I’m struggling to get back into my work with all my horses now spring is here. I still feel heart broken I lost my froo she was so noble and such a good horse. Your videos are giving me sone strength to get bk in the saddle and get the 2 of my riding horses going again. They do get me out every day bless them as they need me but each day froo isn’t there and it still hurts. She didn’t suffer in and way it was just her time. I think you’ve done a great job trying to weatherize the whole herd. It’s hard when you’re by yourself and doing all this work and I’ve watched you just recently for the last few days. We always prepped feed buckets at the barn and took them home to soak when we didn't have any hot water in the barn. We would also fill up extra jugs (like 9 extra gallon jugs) and top off anyone's feed bucket that needed more water, or add molasses to make sure they drank. My mom's gelding was the one who would become impacted, so he got a pretty messy mash but he LOVED it! He'd actually slurp it!

I worry about mine regardless of everything I do too! I also think it's important for them to be able to go in and out on their own and have to say the plastic strip curtains are a brilliant idea! It's been over 40 years, but I vaguely remember my local harness track having the red coated rider. On flat tracks they would be the outriders who catch runaway horses etc. Not sure what purpose other than to add some pomp they'd have on a harness track. Maybe they went out of vogue so harness horses wouldn't see them anymore?

I'm 73 and live in South (New)Jersey. I have 1 horse and some barn cats I care for. Our temperature rarely drops blow 0 so I can't imagine dealing with 50 below! Your video was very informative and greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing.
Same. SE PA here. Our extremes are at about the limit of what I think I can tolerate. And glad our extremes don't come often.

@@user-zl8mg3ll2j I would think it's in Fahrenheit, since Montana is of course in the USA. AS you likely know, -40 F and -40 C are the same. Minus 50 F is -45 C. But since I'm hundreds of miles north of Montana, in Northern Alberta, and it only went to -31 C here, or -24 F, I have to conclude that the Montana weather foecasts included windchill. There's a huge difference. A perfectly comfortable temperature of -15 C (+5 F), for a person in just a coat and scarf, is cold as heck when there's a wind! Then you need 2 pairs of pants (or tights, longjohns, whatever), 2 pairs of socks inside good winter boots, and 2 sweaters under your coat and scarf, plus mitts, NOT gloves, and a very good hat or insulated hood. But even then, if the wind is in your face you still feel cold. Only a full set up for skiing, with proper goggles and face protection, can make it comfortable.
Ooops! Sorry! I got carried away there. But it's already done, so I'll leave it in here.
For the most part windchill is negated inside a barn, but it's only partiallly negated in a run-in shed, especially depending on which way the shed faces. So it's good to see how this woman really does all that she can for them. Wild horses have none of this done for them. They do survive, but no doubt at times they really suffer a lot!

I’ve never had to take care of horses in such extreme cold. Though in my milder climate, cold or hot weather meant extra work & precautions. But WOW seeing you prep brings back memories and the realization that I had it easy! Really enjoyed seeing your routine. As always I’m so impressed by how well you care for your horses and Tiny 😊 You think about each one and what they need and want. Really special. Thanks you for this lovely video!

I was thinking much the same. We average in the 20s-30s, warm spells up into the 50s and one or two cold snaps that get to single digits but only last three or four days before getting up into the 30s which then feels like a heat wave because it's above freezing. Before we had the deicer we'd put the water buckets inside a larger container with straw. I'd read about people in Alaska doing that, the bucket inside an old huge tire stuffed with straw that actually insulated it enough to keep it from freezing solid. I was incredulous but it did work for us when it got into the teens at times. Schlepping water in gallon jugs to fill the water buckets when the hose and spigot were frozen. I need replacement parts currently and my hip hurts almost constantly. Just the thought of all that makes me hurt and exhausts me, as watching the CC doing all that exhausts me. Thirty years ago I would have seen it as a challenge and inconvenience. Now it would be an impossibility. My sister is stuck doing everything for the two ponies we have currently, and she's older than I am, but her body has held up better over the years.

I just found your channel and I can definitely relate! I live on a farm in northern Wisconsin where I take care of 6 horses and my two Great Danes by myself. It's so hard sometimes it almost makes me want to cry. But there's no time for that, as you well know. I guess sometimes the hardest things are also the most rewarding. I know I'm doing what I am meant to do right now and you clearly are too, and that's why we don't mind doing it. I can't imagine life without horses. My Grandpa used to tell me "this might look like work, but it's not really work we're doing - it's feeding our soul." And he was right. Take care of yourself as well as you do your horses! When the weather is harsh, get extra sleep, eat food that nourishes you, and surround yourself with only the people who make you feel good about the world. We owe it to our horses to take care of ourselves too. They need us to be at our best.

Oh, how well I remember all of that. I grew up on a ranch in the southern Black Hills in the 60's. My family raised herfords and bred AQHA horses. Although we seldom got the temps you do, we had our share of sub-zero days from about mid Dec through January. In the corral where we kept the milk cow, Dad installed one of the very first heated electric waterers in Custer county. The first ones were really small, but still quite the deal back then, and I remember as a kid, Dad and some of the neighbors standing around it one winter day and marveling over how that unit never iced up. We were part of the Angostura irrigation project and always had water tanks with pumps in the pastures, but silly kid that I was, I told Dad that we should "put 'lectric waterers all through the pastures". He just laughed, and today my cousins are still swinging mallets to break the ice out there :-)
Anyway, we really enjoy your channel, and pray that you and your stock stay healthy through the winter.

Im in canada and I choosed shires. The largest drafts like the clydesdale and shires are pretty well equiped for winter . I do notice the shires get a thicker fur coat than clydes though. It always snow and hits -30 without windchill and I cant use blanket as the horses will sweat in them! This winter my mare grew a slightly thicker coat than last year, which scares me.
Oh, I think the sheeps, Highland cattle & Highland Ponies are well adapted.

God knows how we got to this state - I'm of the Boomer generation, a childhood survived with no central heating or double glazing - and proper winters. Not saying everything was rosy, but we could cope with most things without falling apart.

We use those plastic curtains as well, it took a bit to get them used to them! Where we are in Southeast Iowa we have had over 30 inches of snow since early Friday morning and it was almost 50 below with the wind chill last night. I have had to wade through over 3 foot deep drifts twice a day to the barn because my husband has literally been working non stop at his job at the power plant to keep things running. My diesel tractor would not even start to be able to plow snow until I put a heater on it overnight last night.. It has been brutal, we only blanket one horse. We lost our oldest horse Jessie, a week ago this morning, sometime after midnight but before 7 am. He was almost 28. The sweetest and kindest and most boisterous beautiful buckskin gelding I have ever had the privilege of having here at our barn. Run free Jessie...😘😪

I was surprised to see that most of precautions and extra care you did for your precious herd was pretty much what I did for my horses! I moved from the West Side of Washington State to the East Side and there's a HUGE temperature difference. So people laughed and scoffed at me when I blanketed my horses and took all the extra care. Because they weren't used to the extreme cold temps on this side of the state. Plus my gelding was 25 years old. We have a barn that's got two huge, open stalls but because of the metal roof (I think that's why) the refused to go in it during a storm. So, just like you, I would lay awake most of the night and worry about Sassy and J.R. most of the night. I truly love and look forward to your videos!! 💜🐴💜

You are very right about the climates of the 2 areas. Proximity to a large body of water has a huge effect on the climate. Oceans have a moderating effect on neighboring land masses. So any continent or large island will have fairly temperate climates on all of the coastal areas, but will have extremes of temperature both high and low in the centre, if it's big enough.
I'm from Winnipeg Manitoba, which is at the geographic centre of North America, so we have real whoppers of highs and lows! It very often gets to 38C or 100F in summer, and -30 C or -22 F in winter. It does get much hotter and much colder on occasion too. The temps I just gave are common ones that we see many times every year. They're not anywhere near the record highs or lows. It's almost as hot as N and S Dakota in summer, and a tiny bit colder in the winter.
We're also at the north end of Tornado Alley. For people who don't know, part of the reason that Tornado Alley exists is the relative flatness, and the heat that comes from being in the middle of the land mass.
Anyway, moving away from US's NW coast would make a huge difference in how the climate is. Other geographic factors would affect it too. Altitude, whether not it's mountainous, forests, large lakes, even presence and number of cities.
You were so right worry about your older horse(s). I haven't had my own horses, but I've seen how weather affects older cats and dogs. Even if they never go outside, it still affects them in extreme ways! So does the extreme difference in daylight hours from summer to winter in northern areas.
It's so good to see people here who love animals, and especially horses, as much as they deserve! They give so much to us, and they are such amazing creatures! Many kudos to you for caring so much! ❤❤❤
@@TheCleverCowgirl I haven't got the right words to express how much I admire the people who do whatever it takes to make their horses comfortable in this weather.
Some people don't realize that horses lived outside for millennia, and most breeds are adapted to some weather exposure. They also don't know how psychologically horses need to be outdoors and to feel free. Or how deadly colic is, and how easily it can take hold and quickly kill a horse. With the causes of it being so varied (and seemingly mysterious), we do know that disruption of routine, especially dietary routine, contributes to it in a big way. So keeping them outside and active is so important.
And then there are those who are simply trolls, and are just looking to upset people. To them it's a sport. Nothing they say is worth giving a hoot over. You are doing a fantastic job! And the proof is in the pudding. Your horses will ride this out in the most comfort that is possible to give them. And your regular viewers know that. Who cares about the trolls? Ignore them.

Water problem ... for ample warm/hot water, get a tank of sufficient volume to last a few days, set a pipe with a tap some distance away from it (a few feet) and also conect it to the main water supply so you can fill it. Build your muck heap around it (keeping it away from the outlet tap, of course) and by next winter, youll have a constant supply of warm/hot water with no running costs at all, which will be very little affected by the cold; as long as the muck heap is big enough, it - and hence the water - will retain heat wonderfuly well.
Those curtains are an ideal solution for insulation - but what happens when it's windy? Don't they blow and flap when the wind changes direction?

We do pretty much what you do for these cold snaps. Lucky for us here in Eastern WA we didn't get as cold as MT. But I still worry about our horses and minis. Especially the ones over 20.
The old guys are just so sensitive. Once we make it out of this snap I will sleep much easier!
We bring all 7 of the horses in the barn and we run propane heaters. Our aisle is concrete and we set the heaters there. We still had a waterer freeze during our very cold weather which needed the propane torch to thaw out.

I watched a channel with cows, in Michigan left out over the winter with snow up to their bellies and with a newborn calf out in it. I was in awe, as I come from upstate NY from a family dairy with Holstein cows, over wintered in a barn, we experienced 60 below temps.
I learned years ago on a Canadian British Columbia horsy channel, who left his horses out all winter, with gobs on snow on their backs, without blankets and they loved being out in their paddocks. He stressed the importance of extra feed to keep them warm. I'm not sure how cold it got.

I wnt thru a few years of taking care of my horses in Minnesota. Frozen auto waterers, hauling hoses, hay, it was no joke. I'm now in Missouri 😂
My Joker is a pig, both in his stall and with hay. He would just circle his stall until poop pee and shavings were mixed. It was disgusting. I would have to empty his whole stall every day.
I only have Joker on a mash so I fill it at home and let it soak for 6-8 hours. I really feel for you, having so many horses to soak mashes for. It's 0 deg here today with wind chill 20 below.

You do a phenomenal job for your kids. Of course you're going to worry about them, after all they're family. I bet you go out as often as possible to check on them and give them some hugs and scratches. I would. People who have never loved or cared about an animal, beit horses, dogs, cats or even guinea pigs have no clue of the dedication we animal lovers feel for our 4 legged children. My goodness, that's a lot of work to prepare for a deep freeze. It's fascinating to see everything you need to do to prepare the horses - not only keeping them warm but their nutrition needs. I love how you consider the needs for each horse. Some need blankets and some need different mash. The way you care for your horses is just extraordinary. Finally, it was interesting to see how the other horses reacted to seeing Nigel in a blanket. It's so sweet of you to take the time during your busy preps to allow the other horses to sniff his blanket and make sure it's nothing to worry about. I enjoy every one of your videos!!! Skeletor was my son’s favorite cartoon character 35 years ago , so every time you say “Skeletor,” I hear it in my mind spoken in the awestruck, loving voice of a little boy wielding a plastic sword. The memory is so sweet, and it makes me love your Skeletor all the more.

I live in New England and my horses growing up were always Morgan’s. We had cold weather back in the day (0 deg was very cold) but other than putting on a blanket and giving them more shavings, we didn’t do too much preparation. Of course our horses were always inside at night. I’ve been watching more channels with a Western viewpoint and find the differences in equine husbandry very interesting. I wish I had been exposed to some of these alternative methods then.
Unfortunately, some people take great joy in maligning others and their efforts. Whatever nasty things they are saying is their problem, not yours. Nigel is a survivor for sure. You don't get to be a little old pony without being a survivor. I have no doubt he will survive his snug jammies and his cushy stall ;) Your boy Skeletor reminds me so much of my guy. Similar personality, always "helping", always looking for attention, always sure the World is Going to End if there is any little change in their immediate environment. Shows how intelligent they are when they notice EVERYTHING.
Here in Eastern Colorado we are also having a cold snap, although not as bad as yours; it’s not quite 20 below at night and a few degrees above zero in the day. However, the temperatures should be in the 40’s by Tuesday. My horses are 21 and 14yo. I don’t have stalls, but a barn for storage and a 24 X 10 converted Garage-in-a-Box for a run-in shed. I clean the poops out daily, but not the wet - I just put more shavings on top. I have about 18” of bedding in the shed right now. I feed the horses beet pulp, wheat bran and hay pellets once a day (the older horse also gets cracked corn twice a day). Their feed is supplemented with vitamins and minerals. The horse wears a blanket when he needs it. He has a medium weight Wug and a heavy WB ComFitTech. The Haflinger rarely wears a blanket, but right now he’s in his WB Hi-Neck heavy. It was brutal last night. Hay is pricey here (I’ve spent as much as $22.00 per bale) but I can get excellent high quality grass hay. I weigh the hay before I feed it, but when it’s this cold they pretty much get all they can eat. I put the horses in the 3-acre pasture during the day, but at night and in bad weather, they stay in the paddock, which is where their shelter is situated. The pasture is hilly and rocky, plus we have wild animals. Last month a horse was attacked by a mountain lion a few miles from here. So I like to keep the horses up by the house at night.
You ought to put a couple of bucket heaters on your Amazon wish list. They get a bucket of water very hot in about 10 minutes.

Great job, we are well below zero here in Indiana. My boys will be in the barn due to health issues, they have heated buckets, they wear pajamas (barn blankets) that are a bit less restrictive than regular blankets. I will hand walk them up and down the aisles twice a day as well as give them treat balls etc. for mental stimulation. I add extra bedding and back around all the exterior walls and doors. I feed them 24/7 a blend of grass hay and a balancer twice a day. They have 12x24 stalls and can visit with each other through dividers. I hope every year it is enough , so far we have made it through some tough times . I do have a back up generator to keep the water pumps going. He is still a stallion. He would make a good teaser stud for a breeding farm. Other than that he probably couldn’t handle much. He has a lot of special needs now and I couldn’t imagine sending him away, he will stay with me until his little body wears out! 🥰

That was so satisfying to watch. Although your temps are brutal compared to anything I have dealt with, there is something I love about giving the horses tons of bedding and hay and blankies for a winter storm.

I watch some channels where people like you rescue starved horses who live in the woods . And then I watch your channel and you’re so caring that sometimes I cry. Nigel has no regard for his new status, the little scamp! I'll try not to worry about Tiny, aaah. I don't have horses anymore but I feed hummingbirds year round. I have one heated feeder which is always available and bring the others in for the night then out before dawn after wrapping them in wool socks with handwarmers when we have freezing temps like now. ❤

It feels like -24 here in Indiana. Thankfully I keep my dog inside and he gets a coat for when we go outside for potty breaks.
I used to run a barn in Massachusetts with 24 hour turnout too, it gets cold here in fact its snowing hard right now but nothing like Montana! I just can not imagine what anyone could say negative about you, you take wonderful care of your horses!
I live in SD. We get brutely cold, lots of wind and moderate snow. I have 2 horses and one donkey. My gelding is in his 30's, mare is about 12 and donkey is about 30. They have access to about 10 acres of pasture and a shelter that is open on the east side. I dont blanket them. My gelding is skinny. He has basically worn his teeth down. So he cant eat hay. But he gets grain, alfalfa pellets and beet pulp all soaked. My donkey gets free choice grass hay. I ration my mare because she gets fat on air and has insulin resistance. They all do well w my set up. So for now i wont change things. I do worry about my gelding but he is a tough old guy. I put a tank heater in their water tank when temps are below freezing. They have free access to mineral and salt blocks.

I just bought a trio of blankets yesterday for my mare, I didn't realize that it would get to negative -14 to -19 last night. She's getting hers on today. Where I board, he has too many to be able to all fit into the run in. So she's getting a mid weight blanket with a cotton sheet, when it starts to get -25, she'll get two thicker blankets. It'll be fun cause I don't think she's been blanketed before...

I lost my 36 year old TB mare back in January and I’m struggling to get back into my work with all my horses now spring is here. I still feel heart broken I lost my froo she was so noble and such a good horse. Your videos are giving me sone strength to get bk in the saddle and get the 2 of my riding horses going again. They do get me out every day bless them as they need me but each day froo isn’t there and it still hurts. She didn’t suffer in and way it was just her time. We always prepped feed buckets at the barn and took them home to soak when we didn't have any hot water in the barn. We would also fill up extra jugs (like 9 extra gallon jugs) and top off anyone's feed bucket that needed more water, or add molasses to make sure they drank. My mom's gelding was the one who would become impacted, so he got a pretty messy mash but he LOVED it! He'd actually slurp it!
