I had to laugh at myself because at my farm I was taking care of my horses in the same cloths you described (wool base, fleece lined jeans down vest, down jacket, insulated bibs, etc) when it was 10-degrees ABOVE zero. You were at 50-debrees BELOW zero. I am officially a wimp. And you are my hero.
You did an awesome good job young lady. Bravo to your husband for showing his concern not just stating it. We had to get you some electricity out to those water troughs before next year Lord Jesus let it be so!! ❤🙏✝️🕊🖖🤗
I used to work at a barn of 20 horses and know how hard the work is in winter. I cannot imagine doing this in a Montana winter, it's nothing short of amazing. I wonder why your electric plug in for your vehicle failed ☹️
Thank you for the kindness of documenting this despite the cold weather and your back injury. Hope you are feeling better. Appreciate your husband helping.

So, yep when you are hurt or sick, it just keep on going. It makes a whole difference in your ability to get things done mentally.
That view on the first morning you showed us, with the mist laying over the ground, was so beautiful. Thank you. I’m sorry to hear about your back. I hope you can rest a lot in between. Something I have found really hard to ask for is help. Please get the help you need to heal, otherwise you could do yourself a permanent injury. Take care of yourself Ms C. Cowgirl! ❤
Oh no, I just got to the part where you are in pain and doing the chores. I am sorry and yep, us county girls know how to power through. I will pray for a quick recovery for you!
I love seeing these how to prepare for cold weather videos. I was born and raised and still live in southern California and i always dream of living somewhere where i can experience the temperature change and the seasons. Montana has been a place i would love to live. I never knew that the winters could get so cold, below 50 degrees blew my mind! I have learned SO much from your videos and they are very very intertaining.
I admire your dedication to the care of your horses. It cannot be easy to care for them in those conditions. You do a really good job! And your planning for the winter weather makes a huge difference. It is easy to tell from how they act around you, that they know you will take care of them. And take of yourself for them.
I would think that just knowing these guys/gals are hearty enough to survive this weather has to make you love them even more. The fact they did is truly amazing to me. Kudos to them and mostly to you for enduring this and with a bad back to boot. I've had back issues myself, but was always able to take care of it without busting it like you. You definitely love your 4 legged kids❤❤❤❤
Hey Cowgirl, you may want to give an incline table a try. (Teeter) I lived with back pain for 8 yrs, went through pills, chiropractors and shots. When they started telling me I needed to get surgery to take a disc out I looked for an alternative and ended up getting a used Teeter incline table off graigslist, best thing I could have done. I used it 4 or 5 times a day for a couple of weeks and the pain was gone. I did construction my whole life and ended up with a herniated disc and had times when I literally had to crawl to go to the bathroom. The thing was truly a life saver for me. Hope you're feeling better.
Same! I do some other therapies for my lower back which have been working relatively well. This is the first time I've had a problem with my neck, but man it is no fun! I will definitely be looking into one!
@@TheCleverCowgirl I love my chiropractor. I'm not willing to argue with people but chiropractors have kept this old body of mine moving for decades. I hope you find an incline bench. They really do help too. My neck will kink up and I lose control of my left arm. Chiropractic put the bones back where they belong and suddenly I can use my arm again. It's frightening but it will get better. Please care for yourself. You're doing a great job in this cold.
I will add my own personal endorsement for the Teeter incline table. Makes a big difference in managing your back if you’ve had trouble before. I also do Chiropractic and acupuncture as needed, but I can do the Teeter table at home whenever I need to, which nips problems in the bud before they get really bad.
@@j.elizabeth4621 I thought I would be in pain for the rest of my life, but it's been almost twenty years now and I'm good, no pills, no doctor's and no surgery. I think it even flush's my crazy old brain out, lol.
I understand completely. My debilitating back pain hit me 8 years ago. My husband bought me a small tractor to help me with the horse chores.. You are a hero in my mind.
Great Job! I had no doubts you and the Horses would survive the brutal temps. So sorry about your back, you've mentioned in previous videos of your bad back and even showed when you put on a support for your back when taking all those bales off the horse trailer. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! I've had a bad back ever since growing up on a farm, toting those hay bales, so it doesn't take much, just a sudden movement to create a flare up. Sending prayers, hugs and love for total recovery! Recently, I had a lumbar steroid injection, which did NOTHING for me. You are so right, there is never a VACATION for us on the farm with animals to care for, that's what gives us purpose and a reason to get out of bed each morning! You're still a young lady and an inspiration to us all!!!!
Sure brought back memories of having horses and surviving cold snaps in Winter. I'm from Central Canada, Ontario to be exact. I had one Quarter horse mare for 21 years and raised 2 colts off of her when she was under 10. I bordered my horses at other folks stables, so the amount of work required of me to do was minimal. I did participate in weekly box stall cleaning which helped with financial output. When boarding horses with a friend I did take over the work when she went on winter vacation. I simply moved into her home and went to my office from there daily after barn chores. I gave up my horses at age 45 when my body was riddled with arthritis and I was no longer able to get myself into the saddle. I'm 75 now & all I have are my memories and a Clever Cowgirl. Thank you for sharing your wonderful videos.
This was a real treat. I'd missed this one. How amazing horses are, able to handle deep prolonged cold. With your nurturing assistance 😊. I'd never considered that a snow layer on a back acts like a insulation blanket.
Getting injured when you have horses counting on you sucks, hope you are feeling better quickly! Glad all the horses did well. Scarlett is becoming a beautiful horse 🐴💖
Couldn't write any better than the below heartfelt comments, so will write a heartfelt "Ditto". 👍 Would like to write about the exceptional quality of the way you created this video. Not sure if I've just missed it previously, but your "production" on this with the lead in weather, and the music is like "pro level". Pretty awesome! Super fun channel to follow. Thank you! 😃
As a Canadian, I feel your pain... and your cold!! And having broken my back twice riding, I certainly feel your back pain! Kudos to you for getting through it all! Bless you!!
What a trooper you are Mrs. Clever Cowgirl! I admit to having to blink quite hard 😪 watching you take care of those precious souls who depend on you, even though you were in such pain. God bless you and your wonderful husband for being such good stewards.
Prayers for u and the horses...i put a blanket on my 31yr old for the first time this morning she never flinhed....mostly got her a blanket cause shes almost blind in one eye and doesnt go in the stall....stay warm
I hate winter chores. In SD today is our last day at zero or below, at least during the day. Working injured and cold is even worse. I don’t know how you do it. I hope your back is better soon. Be careful out there. Warmer days are coming!
Made it thru here in Great Falls. Got up and started the vehicles every so often. Not frozen pipes or dead vehicles. The cold didn't seem to deter rodeo fans on the 13. Lol
The coldest place I've been to is Inari, Finland, which got to -55c and forced them to shut the schools. There were no birds about, squirrels lived under the snow, and every other animals were in sheds, barns or houses. Being from a place in Australia that gets to 9c during winter, I am amazed at how hardy your horses are
Our little cold snap, here in Colorado, was 20 below for one night with single digits in the day. Even with heavy gloves and “HotHands” inside them, I have several spots of frostbite on my fingers. Now that I’m 75 I have a terrible time with my hands in the cold weather, so I was glad to hear that it’s not an issue for you. It never fails that an injury or illness occurs in the worst weather when the horses require maximum attention. One has to keep going to keep up with the work. It’s a good thing that you have plenty of hay - one less item to worry about.
…It does look gorgeous out with the blue sky. It’s nice to see all the horses doing well, thanks to your care and knowledge. What a relief you had running water. 🌾 🐴 👱🏻♀️ 🌷
You would think that there ears would freeze, I am glad they are doing well. Take care of your back and stay warm. I am in Indiana and we have snow it’s cold and blowing but nowhere near the temperature you are having to deal with.
Sorry you hurt your back. Makes everything so much harder to do. I’m glad all your horses and Tiny made it through that blast.🥶 Hopefully it will get warmer soon. Please take care of yourself.😘❤🙏🏻✨
You’re right about having another person caring for your horses. No one can really do it better than you . Just recognizing their attitude can make a difference. I’m so glad to get your update after watching weather reports. Do you have one of those back support bands? I use one when my back bothers me and it seems to help it heal faster. Ski goggles would help your eyes too.
Back pain - ugh, with a degenerated disk at L4-L5 and chronic thoracic strain, I know back pain a little too well. Classic issue for those of us who chose careers as fire service medics, but common among everyone who lifts for a living. That said, I honestly think having the responsibility to get moving to care for horses and handle all the other chores is an overall benefit as long as we self regulate and discover what works best for us. For frozen hands: I finally got battery heated glove liners! Many years ago, I had a thumb injury that compromised circulation in my left thumb. I skipped the heated liners the other morning because I was only going to be out in -20F for a short time, but a few minutes was all it took to make that thumb painful and useless despite having a fairly decent pair of gloves on. It was a trick to find XXL gloves actually big enough to go over the heated liners since things like throwing firewood around would destroy them in short order, but I absolutely love them. They are a game changer for me since the agony while waiting for warm water to thaw that thumb is one of my least favorite things. I'm jealous of horses' ability to handle weather. They graze under the hot sun on days I feel like I'd die without A/C, and would rather let snow pile up on their backs than use a run in or a barn that I worked hard to make available. My oldest 2 will be 26 in May and still prefer a little horse play and a roll in the snow over taking cover. Mind blowing. Why are we so fragile by comparison?!
You are truly an angel, helping these horses in intolerable cold. You are so knowledgeable! Thanks you for posting these fascinating videos. I have stopped watching the news since the election and instead give myself the upper of watching your videos.
hubby was keeping an eye on you🫂 I had horses and goats and chickens a long time ago, it's so much work to take care of farm/ranch animals, no time off. every animal should be so lucky to have a caretaker and friend like you.
Scarlet sure is sassy! Nice to see everyone did well through your storm. When I still had a dog I wrote some notes about his food, supplements, etc just in case of emergency. I never had to use it but I'm glad I had it. Life happens pretty quick, I hope your back is much improved. ❤
Much respect from Alaska! Love to see such healthy, fluffy horses, they are clearly very well cared for and well loved. Wishing you a speedy recovery and some milder temperatures to come!
I have never been a horse person but I found your channel & I have to say I really enjoy it. You love these animals so much & it really shows. They are so blessed to have you. I hope you are felling lots better. 🥰
I live in Manitoba and the winters here are 6 months long. I have seen temps at -50C with the wind chill. It's insane. I come from South Africa where we had awesome weather and four seasons, so the adjustment to life here has taken some years! I take my hat off to you to keep taking care of your horses outdoors, I had no idea! Waytogo, CC. ♥
I used to live in Calgary for 17 yrs and have felt a wind chill of -70. I thought I was going to die and all the people I knew were very grouchy also. Bless you for being such a great owner/earth 👼. Wicked winters in your area.
Grouchy Gus... too cute. I'm so glad you all fared well during the super cold snap. You're such a good Horse Mama. I pray that you feel better very soon.
Awww Scarlett - your ice princess!! I love the way you take care of your horses like your children ! And I definitely would have done all the chores for nothing every day and night ! Maybe teach your husband later on in case of another emergency? I’ve only felt -40 so I have no idea how hard colder is ! Wow ! You guys certainly are badass !! Thanks for the vid and so happy everyone is ok ! 💯🐴❤️

I have been thinking about you and the horsies and tiny since your last video when you prepared for the cold! I can not even imagine -50😭 I’ve found your channel a week back and binge watched a lot of your videos, and I’m so glad I’ve found you as you seem to care about your animals deeply and you are really an expert/professional but with kindness and being down to earth. it is just refreshing to see :)) I hope your back feels better soon🥺 I am sad I am on the other side of the globe, I’d gladly go over and help take care of the horses for you! I hope this cold will be over soon (and maybe next year will be better). Hi from Hungary❤
Only a really good horse owner understands the moods and well being of their horses. Your knowledge and very hard work in caring for them is to be commended, also its always good to have a husband who will jump in and help out when needs must. Hope your back gets better soon.
Horses know things we don’t …they definitely knew you were trying you best even though injured and they were coming up to beam healing light and love into you 😊
I feel your pain on the injury and having to still do chores! People tell you to rest, but there’s no one else to take care of the horses! Only other horse people understand that.
Hello, I have lived with horses for all but two of my 76 years, and appreciate what you are attempting. We do get cold in Ohio, but not in those numbers. Please allow me to ask a few questions, and offer some suggestions, if I might. I was pleased to hear your statement about hay, and the hind gut. Can all, most, or some of these horses be run together? We always have the herd boss, which tend to level out over time. If they can be grouped, you will save a lot of work, and feed loss. I started to feed nothing but 4x5 round bales in a feeder that I built to provide 24 hr. access to food. These are loaded on their sides with either a tractor if you have room, or a skid steer About three years ago my son helped me install a “Drinking Post” non electric water hydrant. It has been a good product. Keeping your shelter(s) facing the east, so that they can soak up as much early solar heat. Carry on, and pray for an early spring.
I wish they could all go out together! I have a few that were stallions until much later in life and they are harder in integrate into a herd. I used round bales for a few winters but the quality was not up to snuff!
Pointers I learned from living in Fairbanks AK. At -20 F was a breaking point for changing from my winter clothing into my deep winter clothing. There was little wind up there in deep winter. 1. Wear only natural fibers: wool, silk, cotton, no acrylic!; i wore panty horse as my first layer, then socks, then heavy duty boots; i made a calf length parka coat out of deep freeze sleeping bag fabric i bought at the fabric store. I used a wolf pelt to add the ruff and other trim. At 10 degrees F above zero, that coat was too hot, I sweated in it. Two layers of hand coverings. If I dudn;t have the first, thin , glove layer on before I left the housenit took forever before my fingers warmed up. I put on the second mittens in the car. At -20 the car was plugged in all nite in a covered shed. I left the key electric taped into the truck all winter. Thenelectric tape provided a buffer to stop freezer burn. I didn’t bother locking the truck and generally left it running while I went grocery shopping. I knitted a hat for myself out of cowachin yarn that I brushed up with a carting brush. It was wonderful and I gifted many. I love cold weather, the crunch of snow and the glisten of moonlight on the snow. fBKs is only 100 mikes south of the Artic circle, so it almost has one day with absolutely no sunshine. Snow doesn’t melt up there for months. The snow that falls at the end of Sept melts in April with all the other collected snow. I know your horses can survive, but I didn’t realize they’d steam. You’re a wonderful herd mom, so your guys will have the best of care. Does their water freeze in their stalls? Thanks for making a channel……….i now live in MaryLand.
I have so much respect for you and all you do and know to keep your horses safe and healthy. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m learning so much and look forward to each of your episodes.
Just watched this video. You are so dedicated to your horses and it is admirable. I so enjoy your dialogs of all your activities with them. Makes me feel a part of the video. You have a great talent with describing your days with your precious horses! Cheers
I’m so glad you posted today. I was a little worried. I’m happy all your fur babies are fine but I’m sorry you had to hurt your back…damn backs! All the best.
Hi CC, living n Fl. I admire your dedication to your animals n crazy cold weather. I love horses & I’m so glad I found your podcast. I’ve watched others on you tube but you truly capture the essence and beauty of caring for these magnificent creatures. I wish the best for you finding your own place & look forward to seeing it through with you .
I hope that you feel better soon! I am glad your husband has been able to help out by driving and coming with you for the chores. Scarlett is living up to her name and coat color. She is her own fire. :)
I love your ranch, and I am so impressed how well you take care of your horses. You could make a commercial about that fact that horses can self-insulate so they don’t need blankets. #406❤️
Yes, -50 is no joke here in Montaña. Phones and GoPros shut down quickly because the batteries die and the electronic components are not made for severe weather.
You poor darling---I'm so sorry to hear about the injury (or whatever it is) to your back. Not only did you keep going, you kept filming to make this video! 🥺 I, for one, would have totally understood if you decided that was the "one more thing" you could let go of. Very glad the horses and Tiny made it through though. God Bless.
I lived in Malta, MT in 2001 and it was -50 below. I wa in layers and Carharts. I'm impressed how well you were prepared and you should be complimented on how you love and care for your horses.
Wow, those horses are so lucky to have you taking care of them. Please remember to take care of yourself as well. Hope you're on the mend and feel better soon.

The last two videos have been a huge help. Next spring I'm moving my Morgans from California to Townsend. They both hair up really nice. You co firmed alot of my plans will work and learned something new when it came to beet pulp. Thank you very very much.
That is stunningly beautiful there! Our cold temp where I am in AK are usually dry so it allows me to keep the horses without blankets for much lower temps than others in the lower elevations where its a more wet cold. It is really cool seeing different areas in the US that battles the same cold temps. Thank you for the update, I was curious how they faired.
I'm sending lots of positive thoughts your way. I hope the weather warms up even more, and I hope your back improves quickly! I'm glad the horses and Tiny made it through this horrible cold snap! Scarlett looked like the severely cold temps were absolutely no problem for her! She is beautiful and tough! ❤
Well, the horses survived thanks to their caretaker. Hopefully, temperatures don’t go above freezing too quickly and turn everything into an impassable bog.
I'm so glad all your horses and Tiny made it through the cold snap OK. So sorry you hurt yourself. I wish you a speedy recovery. It's difficult when you can't take time off and just rest. Sending you good healing vibes. ❤️🌞
Sorry to hear about your back & numb arm. I woke up one morning with my right arm numb and hurting pretty bad... I looked for a massage therapist and boy what a difference that made...It was a pinched nerve in my neck. So glad to see that all your horses & Tiny made through such extreme weather... Thanks for sharing
I love Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, I stayed 6 weeks in Wyoming and lived off and on in Fairbanks, the bitter cold is just that bitter take care 😊
You remind me again that I want to make a UA-cam video about my current feeding, as well as health concerns about my 2 horses. Plus to make sure my old pet sitter who knows horses is still available, as didn't use her for last > 3 years during Covid when never went anywhere. Watching the video about handling such cold was fascinating. I don't even understand what you are wearing when you describe it. Nor how horses can consume so much hay. Nor about batteries are being plugged in. So many things I have no clue about with such cold. Amazing how the horses natural insulation can do so well in that cold. Very sorry to hear you wrenched your back.
Oh man, that's rough....i remember those days! We only got to -25 below in Joliet MT. Sure do love seeing the Bridger range in the background. Kudos to you for taking such good care of your beauties. Hope you're feeling like your old self by now. Happy New Year!
Wow ! ! ! I guess I really didn't think about what happens if u get sick - caring 4 horses is a whole bunch of work on good day's so I'm really impressed that u pushed through & got all the horses needs net. I see what "mental toughness" truly means & get why u didn't let u'r hubby help. Really glad u'r back is better & I think the horses were saying thanks in this video.... as we know animals are extremely aware of what going on around them - they understand things on a deeper level. (thanks 4 making this vid. - it goes above & beyond u'r call 2 duty : )
Total congratulations on coping with this long spell of very severe cold weather. Being aware about what you would be facing (mainly based upon your past bad weather experiences) and your preparations with the horses and their likely individual needs. Plus getting yourself into a good position to handle it all made it very clear to anyone that preparation (sometime long term - extra purchases of quality hay as well as short term, adequate food purchases with stocks on hand at the stables before the weather event, spare water heaters etc) is absolute key to survival and success. It was most interesting to me to see how the horses attitude and appearances changed as the cold weather eased OR they became more used to coping with it. So what extra / new things have you learnt having come through this experience? - Apart from some rubber buckets instead of relying on plastic ones that become brittle in the extreme cold 😄😄😄 Dan

I think she even grew over the cold snap!!
Thank you! 😃
Wow, thank you! I try to get better every video! Editing is not a skill I had when I started but I am enjoying learning something new!
Such hard work. You are clearly loved by the horses (and your husband), which is such a special reward.
Lol
Thats crazy!
The coldest place I've been to is Inari, Finland, which got to -55c and forced them to shut the schools. There were no birds about, squirrels lived under the snow, and every other animals were in sheds, barns or houses. Being from a place in Australia that gets to 9c during winter, I am amazed at how hardy your horses are
I heard some chickadees today and it was music to my ears!
It doesn't feel too bad until I stop moving 🫤 Glad it is winter though, a hurt back in summer is the worst!!
Tiny is just so adorable! 🤎🖤🧡🤍
Thank you!
Blessing to you and thanks for all you do for the horses. Hopefully, you got much better. Lots of strength and love from Switzerland
He knows better than to volunteer for horse duty 🤣
Your tough sis❤take care of yourself
I'm sorry your back hurts ! I was wishing I could help , but I'll just pray for your recovery and better weather for you ! 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎❤🙏🏼I'm glad your husband was able to help ❣️
I so admire your tenacity.. Wow, wow! You are the best Mom. I thought I was tough, but you make me look like a baby kitten. I am praying for you and your babies everyday.😢
Well done. So rewarding watching you care for your horses.
I am so glad you found me!❤️
Only a really good horse owner understands the moods and well being of their horses. Your knowledge and very hard work in caring for them is to be commended, also its always good to have a husband who will jump in and help out when needs must. Hope your back gets better soon.
Your an amazing human, taking care of the horses in pain. God Bless hope you’re feeling better. Tiny is so vocal.
Horses know things we don’t …they definitely knew you were trying you best even though injured and they were coming up to beam healing light and love into you
😊
I am in awe of your lifestyle. And the toughness of the horses. Montana is clearly not for faint of heart! Get well soon!!
I feel your pain on the injury and having to still do chores! People tell you to rest, but there’s no one else to take care of the horses! Only other horse people understand that.
Hello,
I have lived with horses for all but two of my 76 years, and appreciate what you are attempting.
Sorry about your back I’ve had 27 surgeries most on my back. Your a real trooper , I pray for healing and health
Cheers
Take care of yourself best you can. 😍🙏
You can make a detailed instructional video for a helper 😄
What an amazing gaurdian you are, sending you warming thoughts for all the animals
This is a beautiful video.
I love your ranch, and I am so impressed how well you take care of your horses. You could make a commercial about that fact that horses can self-insulate so they don’t need blankets.
#406❤️
The ice/snow crystals on their backs is great sign. I love that cold, one’s sense of survival is fun. Work and worry but exhilarating.
Awesome video thanks for sharing ❤❤sending love and prayers from IRELAND ❤❤.
You were so very brave having had to work through this cold spell With your Injury! Bless you, you have to congratulate your self!!!
Thank you to your husband for helping you. You need to let him help when he wants to and don’t be so stubborn got it. Yes, you got it.
Yes, -50 is no joke here in Montaña. Phones and GoPros shut down quickly because the batteries die and the electronic components are not made for severe weather.
I’m glad the horses did well. With your dedication, of course! I hope you feel better soon!
Du machst das mit den Pferden so gut und ich freue mich sehr darüber, dass du das mit uns auf UA-cam teilst❤
Du hast einen tollen Kanal ❣️
Send you hello from Germany 👋🏻😊
So glad I found your channel. Thank you for sharing. You are incredible. I especially enjoy your narration. It is so informative and calm. Hope you feel better soon.
Me too! Thank you!
Me too! Thank you!
God has truly blessed you & your herd of winter warriors!!!
40 degrees tomorrow!🤦♀️
I'm so glad all your horses and Tiny made it through the cold snap OK. So sorry you hurt yourself. I wish you a speedy recovery. It's difficult when you can't take time off and just rest. Sending you good healing vibes. ❤️🌞
Not only are the horses tough. Brava!
Wow don't know how you do it but much respect for you hurt and all you show the love and care for your horses ❤❤❤
The he squeaky snow sound.
We got to about 3-5 below, I am at the barn for about 2 hours. You are so strong.
Great job in all that weather! Hope your back is better soon. Seeing Scarlett looking so well and staying out must raise your spirits.
Gee and I’m upset it was 30 here a couple days🤪 take care of yourself too. Still dealing with thick muck but no ice . Praying you get a break soon.
I'll take the cold over mud any day!!
I always learn a few things and ways to do it better next time! I feel another video coming on..😁

WOOHOO! 🥳
oh my goodness!! Sending warmth and strength from FL. Its a little chilly for us here but nowhere NEAR that.
