Here's what Alex Hirsch had to say about Ford in the DVD commentary:
"Ford’s great flaw is arrogance. He believes that there are special people, and everyone else...That human attachments are actually weaknesses. The song and dance that he’s giving Dipper here is the exact song and dance that he gave McGucket back when they were younger - ‘You and I are different. We’re better than everyone else. We have a path that no one else can understand. No one else can do this.’ It’s a very seductive idea for Dipper, but he starts to be a little insecure. He kind of can’t believe it, and he’s sort of right to be suspicious, because while Dipper is a smart kid, Ford is projecting. Ford loves Dipper because he sees someone who will tell him ‘yes’ to everything, who will never challenge him, and who will do a really insane, dangerous mission. I know there are some fans who are like ‘Oh, this is a great offer! Dipper should just become a mystery hunter for the rest of his life, not go to high school, not go to college, not be around kids his age…But if Dipper had taken the apprenticeship, he probably would have gone the way of McGucket - Turned into a kind of insane, paranoid hermit with no friends, and just kind of losing his mind. So, it is a seductive offer, but ultimately, Dipper needs to try to learn not to grow up too fast.”

A lot of people hate on Mabel for giving away the rift and starting Weirdmageden. But one has to realize how upset she was with everything going on. A deleted scene due to time constraints in Dipper & Mabel Vs.The Future was Mabel receiving a phone call from her parents telling her she couldn't bring Waddles back home with her to California. This happened before she overheard Dipper saying he would stay in Gravity Falls.
As for the rift we have to remember that Mabel had no idea of the rift or its significance (Ford told Dipper to keep it secret), and while she shouldn't have been so eager to hand it over, keep in mind that she was talking to (who she assumed to be) Blendin, someone she & Dipper left on good terms with in Blendin's Game. Also, Bill is a master manipulator (he did trick Ford & scar Fiddleford after all), so between possessing & posing as a trusted individual & coming at the target at their lowest point with the promise of happiness & it's no wonder Mabel so easily bought into it when she might not have otherwise.

While I've seen some well-informed arguments about who among the Pines family was most at fault for allowing Bill to unleash the rift, I'd have to say all four of them share a similar degree of responsibility. Mabel was just the unfortunate last person in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and at her lowest emotional state that fully set the stage for the events of Weirdmageddon.
On Dipper's end, he was falling victim to his immature need to grow up too fast and was blinded by the allure of what Ford was offering. His overly rational justification to Mabel that growing up is unavoidable and this opportunity was going to help him jumpstart his adult life lacked the vital empathy and wisdom that must also come with such a transition. He's willing to fling himself head-first into Ford's apprenticeship without considering what has happened to people like McGucket that aided him in the past.
Mabel's situation is the opposite in that she's grasping at any line she can to help extend her childhood and the emotional security it offers. Throughout the episode she's taken several gut punches that remind her of this big transition that's fast approaching (seeing the absolute despair of Wendy and the other teens signing up for high school, Candy and Grenda not being able to attend the twins' 13th birthday and say farewell as they leave Gravity Falls). The only one who's offered the sincere emotional support she wanted was Stan, and he's hardly the role model she needs for how to handle this tough transition. To have Dipper, the one person she's counted on to help bring her back down to earth when she's getting carried away, casually say he's going in a new life direction without her is the final knife in an already raw emotional nerve she doesn't know how to properly deal with.
Then there's Stan and Ford, arguably the dark mirror of what Mabel and Dipper could have become if they'd parted ways with such bad blood. Ford's genious is matched only by his shocking lack of forethought and concern for the impact of his own actions. Every major disaster leading up to Bill's manifestation involves some form of him either coercing others into helping him with his dangerous experiments or withholding vital information from his family that could have prevented certain disasters. He's an incredibly smart and determined adult, but hasn't cultivated the wisdom needed to best apply it nor the humility to admit that others have perspectives on things that may be better than his own.
And finally there's Stan. His role in directly causing Weirdmageddon is smaller, but his actions throughout the entire series play vital roles in the events leading up to it. Like Mabel, he has shown his willingness to let his emotions and creative spontaneity guide his actions, but to a far more reckless extent. He's chained to childhood dreams and world views that he knows have changed in his adulthood, but actively fights against (often at the expense of others). Even after bringing Ford back he deflects as much blame for the incident he caused, resulting in the rift between them growing and bleeding over into the bond Dipper and Mabel share.
Ultimately, it's a dramatic comedy of errors and personality flaws between all four family members that resulted in Bill's plans coming to fruition. It makes for great entertainment but can be an absolute nightmare to deal with in reality.

Putting all of the blame for Weirdmageddon on Mabel is a take I find deeply shallow. Mabel's entire world is crashing down, with her childhood innocence period coming to a close, summer ending and then Dipper, her twin, drops the bomb that he wants to stay in Gravity Falls and leave her. Mabel thought she was giving Blendin, someone who liked her the last time they interacted, a menaingless gadget from Dipper's backpack that she accidentally took. I honestly think the person most at fault, other than Bill, is actually Ford. Him telling only Dipper about the rift and not Mabel and Stan not only created a wedge between them, but it was also reckless and dangerous, and the consequences kicked Weirdmageddon off.

A thing to note: Mabel doesn't know as much about Bill as Dipper does. Dipper would not have given the rift to anyone period, but Bill has also POSSESSED DIPPER BEFORE! Mabel knows this, but never saw it happen. She would have no cause to question Blendin being Bill, especially since a Time Bubble sounds exactly like something he'd be an expert on. They did let him live, pardon him of his crimes, and give him hair last time they saw him, so him offering a favor in return isn't as out of left field as it sounds. I definitely didn't catch on in my first viewing, and that's after watching Bill cycle through faces at the end of the previous episode, INCLUDING BLENDIN'S. All the Pines are to blame, not just Mabel. Mabel could have thought about it more, sure, but Frod told Dipper not to trust anyone with the true nature of the rift, and Dipper listened. Grunkle Stan also made Ford SWEAR that he would keep the kids as far from his stuff as possible, and while Dipper fought against that and proved useful to Ford, Ford kept his distance from Mabel in regards to his research. If they had all communicated and listened, things might be different, but that's not what happened.

There are basically two prevailing schools of thought to Mabel’s behavior in this episode.
One is that she’s just a kid who was manipulated in a vulnerable emotional state, the other is that she’s a selfish brat who is solely responsible for Weirdmageddon.
I personally think that both sides are completely devoid of the nuance of the situation.
Yes, Mabel is in a very vulnerable headspace. She’s starting to comprehend the changes that are about to happen, and is the loneliest she’s ever felt. Bill has a way with words, and took the opportunity. Weirdmageddon is indisputably Bill’s fault.
That being said, I feel some people use that to completely ignore the hand Mabel played. Yes, she didn’t know what the rift was, but even without that, she was ready to sacrifice everyone’s year to make her own summer last longer. It’s completely understandable, but still insanely selfish. While Bill is obviously to blame here, I think it’s still important to hold people accountable for their mistakes, no matter the headspace they’re in.

Like he's still 12/13 years old - Ford may have scientific knowledge but he's never taught or looked after a child before. What would Dipper's parents think? I feel like a common theme in this fandom is putting most (or sometimes even all) the blame on Mabel, which is honestly really irritating. She’s a 12 year old who just found out something she’s been looking forward to most of her life (becoming a teen) is seemingly not a very happy time, like at all. And then to top it off she finds out the person who has literally always been with her, her most important person. Won’t even be there to help her through it. Her world was shattering before her eyes, so in her vulnerable state she put her trust in someone who she thought could help, someone she didn’t know had any malicious intent. So yeah, I just think she’s a lot more than the “selfish” girl people often make her out to be. So I’m glad you two are giving her the attention she deserves in your discussions. I think it's because Weirdmageddon is exactly what Bill wanted, so blaming Bill for it is kinda... too obvious to point out. You know, like you wrap up the story in this episode and say "Moral of the story: if you try to cause Weirdmageddon, you might end up causing Weirdmageddon", it doesn't really sound like blame so much as encouragement to chase your dreams. But if you wrap it up as "If you try to hold onto your childhood too much at the expense of keeping the people around you from moving forward with their lives, you might end up causing Weirdmageddon", then it fits better.
Or it could just be that Mabel is overall a good person and we know her to be a good person, so we hold her to a higher standard than the guy I get my deer teeth from.

the fact that she gave up the rifts is one understandable flaw. But there's many other problems like how she made a replacement brother that's "more supportive" even though he sacrificed so much for her is awful. Also, she wouldn't let him take the apprentice role. Dipper is a mature and selfless and Mabel is immature nice (sometimes) but also selfish. Plus she was in an emotional moment and was easy to manipulate. I think even in that moment if she knew how important it was she never would have given it to anyone. We’re in the endgame now, folks!
I seriously love your reactions and I agree with everything you guys said at the end.
It wasn’t Mabel’s fault or Dipper’s. It was Ford for projecting his own personal feelings and problems he had with his brother.
However, there’s nothing wrong with Dipper wanting to take that apprenticeship he was offered because it’s such a great opportunity for him. If only Mabel didn’t overhear it through the Walkie-Talkie because that was the last straw for her after having such a shitty day… Dipper was clearly going to tell her about it when he returned, but it sadly didn’t work out in his favor.
Also, I still can’t get over how cool that UFO lore thing was. It’s super interesting to think about how it could be the reason why extraterrestrial beings were drawn to the strange phenomena of the town or if the saucer crash landed there and ended up causing the anomalies we see or have heard about throughout the show. The origins have never been fully revealed, which leaves lots of room for theories and interpretations!
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing your reactions to the Weirdmageddon arc. It’s the greatest plot to ever happen in any animated cartoon imo! Things are going to get weird so I hope you guys are ready :)

I see a lot of people “defending” Mabel’s decision to give Blendin the rift, and I do agree to an extent; she didn’t know what it was, cause Ford and Dipper didn’t tell her, and she was in an emotionally vulnerable state. The thing I have a problem with is that she still technically gets her wish; she spends most of Wierdmageddon in a bubble enjoying her never ending “summer” and in the end, (spoilers) gets to go home with Dipper (though obviously Dipper decided that entirely on his own). If she ended up getting screwed over and had to endure Bill’s dystopia at the beginning, or if she had more of a redemption arc in the finale, that’d be fine for me. Im not saying she deserves to suffer, I’m just tired of her always being thrown a bone despite not really doing anything to earn it.

      Fell from stairs
Almost got killed (journal 3 info)
Despite not shaking hands with Bill, Mabel got everything she ever wanted, not just "summer forever" but HER OWN WORLD, where she is basically a god.
Yes, it's still a prison, and a very fucked up prison tbh, but Mabel wasn't in danger there, she was perfectly safe, she didn't even need to fear the future, as she wanted.
