Agreed multitasking is inimical I used to do it it just hurts the main task. It kills the priority because you're not making that thing a priority when yo multitask. It's like if I pray while I'm on my phone... it's just not prioritizing.
Seriously. I’m 38 and looking to go back for disability law whilst dealing with early onset Parkinson’s and five months recovered from open heart surgery, and I would walk out hearing this guy talk down to me about work ethic and “grit” like I’m a child.
couldnt agree more...i said this in a comment above but this is literally just a fast talking, overweight boomer, wearing a brown and dark grey suit that looks like it's from the 1920's with a pocket square, that's shouting the most basic bottom of the barrel advice.... and he had to go back and check his notes towards the end because he looses his place and is rambling..... this is the type of guy that will refuse to give someone a bonus because it will "motivate them"
The naivety in the audience is palpable. 7:15 this is what is wrong with the legal profession. It's not funny, it's not a joke. Burnout is a huge problem for young associates. You get these old law firm owners, they feel justified in working young associates to the bone because, "that's just the way the world is" or, "that's how it was back in my day". I'm not against hard work, and you'll find 9/10 grads or young associates are very eager to make a good impression and make a firm money, but my impression of the industry, having been a solicitor, is that ridiculous billable targets and unpaid weekend work are completely normalised. That should NOT be the case, and it is not the case in other sectors. Just FYI, if someone is billing 2004 hrs a financial year, I guarantee they will be spending much more REAL time at work to achieve that, yet this guy's comment is they are "gaming" the system. Fuck off dude. I have heard the, "take some personal pride in your work", "just do it to be the best that you can be", line or some iteration of over and over. It is used by managers to fucking WORK people, pure and simple. It's used to frame a discussion, and make an associate who may just be trying to stand up for some basic working conditions, be perceived as not having any pride in their work. It's a manipulation tactic to work people. Also, it's never appropriate to shout at a colleague in the a work place. But that sort of shit happens all the time in private practise because it is such a high stress, high pressure environment. I can't really knock this guy too much, because at least he seems to be telling them like it is, trying to ready them for reality. Law students generally don't understand how bad it can be.
Maybe with professional services you should be counting it based on per manday effort. If it's an 8 hour workday, how much would someone realistically need to do the task required? You also have to take into account the cost of experience. Yes, it could take me 30 minutes to do, but you had spent 5 years learning the system in order to do it that quick. It's the perception to the client on the value of the service. Remember the triangle of "Good/Fast/Cheap", you can only pick two.
This guy is lying if you can’t tell. I am an ex farm boy and hard worker I pride myself on girt but law firms don’t care about you. They want you to make them money don’t care about your wellbeing - new kid too bad you need to be here at work. Sick dad you better work remotely or we’ll make you’re life miserable. Note how I don’t say fire you because they don’t fire you they need you to make profit but if you completely give up or lose license you’re out. This guy offers only false platitudes don’t trust him
I don't know what it is about this university, but I've learnt so much from the various guest lecturers just by watching them on UA-cam!
Same. UVA is my dream school because of all these great lectures
Well you are basically attending university remotely.
Same here 👍

If I hear the term “GRIT” one more time in higher ed I’m going to lose my mind. It’s beyond overused. Thank you for saving me an application fee.

He spends the second half of the video talking about having hobbies and leaving work at work tho.
They work 80 hour weeks for 4-7 years to have incredible exit opportunities.
Fucken right bro! I’m glad someone finally said it!
Totally. Left me with a bad taste in my mouth.

Society needs a serious overhaul, people have been reduced to glorified machines and it's depressing.
