Oh my goodness... I've just heard a young person say they've never heard of Nina Simone before but they're about to listen to her sing, "Feeling Good" for the first time... I'm so excited for him i had to stop the vid at 33secs to process my excitement... it is such an insanely giddy feeling to know someone is about to have their mind blown!
I remember the first time i heard this song i was in my car and i had to pull over because i couldn't operate heavy machinery with that voice melting my mind. 😍

I absolutely love watching these boys listen to the greats for the first time, but I just don't understand how they have never heard of Nina Simone or several other artist they've done videos on. Nina Simone should be taught in the history books! They need to have classes at school on music appreciation to expose our youth to the culture and history.

I'm a few years older than you, but as a mid-60s gay man (who's originally from Gentry's home state) I agree. I first heard her when I was in elementary school -- like in 1961, '62? My sister had a record but no cover. "Forbidden Fruit" was the track that nailed it down for me -- "Eve and Adam had a garden, everything was great, then one day a voice said, 'Pardon, miss, my name is snake...'" I looked for that elpee and that track for years and years...finally found a British re-issue on CD several years ago. Hallelujah!!!

Hey, sweetheart- I had the privilege to see Miss Nina in concert - in the late 80's - she was ICONIC - dealt with a lot of racial prejudice back in the day -- she was an amazing concert pianist who was denied playing in the greatest halls in the U.S. - in later years, she lived in France - she was understandably bitter about the opportunities denied to her -- and very outspoken about that --she has so many fantastic songs -- one of my favorites is: My Baby Just Cares for Me - ua-cam.com/video/eYSbUOoq4Vg/v-deo.html - there are many versions, but this one is super-simple and features her piano talent - so many, many, great songs by Nina - she NEVER got the credit she deserved - she is worth doing some research!

She wasn't prevented from playing classical piano because of her color. There was an older neighbor in Tryon - Nina called this woman her white mama - who gave her piano lessons for free. That same woman and some other people in the community collected money to pay for Nina to go the Juliard, which she did. But more than anything, she wanted to attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. After finally auditioning, she didn't make the cut. They told her she was very good, close to being accepted, but told she needed a little more work. One of the professors offered to tutor her for free until she was able to audition for the next term, but Nina said no. For the rest of her life she held a grudge, blaming her failure to get into Curtis on racism. The Curtis Institute had accepted black students for years, and there were some black female students enrolled at the time Nina auditioned, but she didn't know that.
Anyway, everything happens for a reason, and maybe if she'd gotten her wish, she'd be a classical pianist and nobody would be able to enjoy her singing. Her loss was our gain. BTW it was while singing in clubs that Eunice Waymon changed her name to Nina Simone. She knew her parents wouldn't approve of that job, so she used the stage name.
