Toni Iommi is one of the creators of heavy metal. Perhaps the very father of the heavy metal guitar sound. Back when he was just a young man, he was working in a mill and chopped off the tips of two of fingers. So he had to make some "pads" for his fingers. But they couldn't work with fine strings. So he bought 'heavy metal" strings for his guitar. It made a deep and rich sound....la! And we hear it very clear on this song!
I think for a lot of us Paranoid was our introduction to the band. It is one of those songs that used to be included on every rock or metal compilation alongside the likes of Since you been gone & Ace of spades. It was a massive song for them as it reached #4 in the UK singles chart and it took them another 8 years before they hit the chart again with Never say die at #21. Paranoid was their first and biggest hit single, hence the inclusion on all those compilations. While some people will say it is overplayed or they have tired of it, for me it is still one of their best songs. That riff is just so god damn recognisable.
Crazy how this song was written and recorded in 20 mins as a filler for the album "War Pigs". The record company change the name of the album to paranoid, without the band knowing. You should also check out Sober by Tool at the reading festival
On October 1, the premiere of a stunningly beautiful video for the song “Baikal” took place on Diana Ankudinova’s UA-cam channel. The soundtrack performed by Diana became the main musical theme of the film “The Spirit of Baikal,” which will be released in wide release on October 19, 2023. In the film itself, Diana voiced two roles - the spirit of Lake Baikal and the voice of the soul of the deceased mother of the main character of the film. The film received several top awards at film festivals.
I could just sit and listen to her talk all day long. Im an American and that accent is hypnotizingly beautiful. And you like my favorite band. Love your videos , you ROCK!!!!!❤❤
First heavy metal song ever, created by a series of bizarre accidents. Tommy Iommi worked in a factory in Birmingham and before he turned pro, as a musician, an industrial accident wore his fingers down almost to the bone on his fret hand. So, in order to relieve the pressure on his fingers he had to loosen the strings on his guitar(Gibson SG), thereby deepening the tone. After recording their first album they needed another track, so, on the spot, Iommi came up with the riff and Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics. Clearly, Geezer is not the name his mama gave him, but the name he came to be known as on the backstreets of Birmingham. He was the leader of the band. Ozzie is a legend. Maybe the best rock singer of all time. They were laughed at by the British musical press when their first album was released. Well done and thank you, Geezette!
My favorite band growing up & still to this day)))They started out under the name Earth & played the blues. They changed their name to Black Sabbath in 1969, there was a movie playing in the cinema across the street from the revenue they were playing at called Black Sabbath & they decided to change their name to that along with their style of music to what just heard)) Some song suggestions are After Forever,, Symptoms Of The Universe, Changes, Dirty Women, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.. Keep rocking)))
The original Black Sabbath was: Anthony Frank Iommi (Tony Iommi, guitar)... Terence Michael Joseph Butler (Geezer Butler, bass)... William Thomas Ward (Bill Ward, drums) ... and John Michael Osbourne (Ozzy Osbourne, vocals) ... Formed in Birmingham around 1968 originally as a blues cover band Earth, changing their name to Black Sabbath in 1969 after the first song they had written together - it was inspired by a 1940's horror movie 'Black Sabbath' (which was playing in a movie across the band's rehearsal space)... The band's debut album in 1970 and 2nd album 'Paranoid' the same year, provided the foundations of what would become heavy metal and hard rock music... They influenced everyone from Van Halen to Metallica to Guns N' Roses to Nirvana to KoRn to Nine Inch Nails to Tool ... and beyond. Ozzy Osbourne wanted to become a rock n' roll singer in 1967 after spending a stint in jail as a teen. His dad bought him a P.A. system and Ozzy put up an ad at a local music store... He met Geezer Butler (who played guitar) through the ad and played in his first band... Then, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward saw the ad, and Tony Iommi knew Ozzy from school (he used to bully Ozzy) and decided to look him up (it was the same Ozzy he knew)... They decided to form a new band w/ Butler and Ozzy and soon, there were just the 4 of them. In 1969, they heard the first Led Zeppelin record and knew that Robert Plant and John Bonham were from Birmingham... They wanted to play that style of 'heavy rock' and amped up what Led Zeppelin were doing. By 1970, Black Sabbath had their own sound and were touring America... They recalled that the first US tour was at a club in the East Coast and they were playing L.A. Forum in the West Coast (where Led Zeppelin played) ... That's how fast Black Sabbath rose in popularity. Sadly, Black Sabbath's excessive substance abuse and legal fights, as well as internal turmoil, ended up splitting the original band after Ozzy was fired in 1979 and went on to have a huge solo career in the 80's. Black Sabbath carried on w/ numerous vocalists, including Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, and Tony 'Cat' Martin... but it was the original band w/ Ozzy Osbourne that is the most iconic and commercially successful.
One of my favorite Black Sabbath hits. But, it has always amazed me that Ozzie talks like a slurring drunk with a mouthful of marbles but when he sings his voice is so clear and his pronunciation is distinct. The magic of music, I guess.
Millie, I saw this band in Miami around 1970 when they first come to town. Loved their sound when I first heard them on the radio and immediately went out and bought their album. Still love those early albums.
May I suggest that you pay special attention to Geezer on that electric bass. The drummer is the world famous Bill Ward! I saw this band way back in the 1970's!!!!! Way before you were born!!!! A fine concert, I mean DAMN great.......... Now young lady you must check out NIB live in Paris in 1970... Geezer is tearing up on that one. Oh yeah!!!!!! They were SO young in that one. BUT they had a killer sound.
Takes me back to my teens. Some of my friends called it "a load of noise", but I liked it, as well as a lot of Prog. Can we comment on "Geezer" Butler's bass playing and Bill Ward's constant driving drumming. Geezer real name is Terence, but who wants a Terry in their band? This was on BBC1 TOTP Top of The Pops.
A music journalist at the time described Sabbath’s music as sounding like Heavy Metal intending to denegrate them. But he made them the first ever Heavy Metal Band, I hope they bought him a drink!
Fine reaction. If you think the introduction to this song was scary and if you want more Black Sabbath, well... then I recommend for you... "Black Sabbath"! 😅 That's it, there's no mistake! The name of the band is Black Sabbath, the album's title is Black Sabbath, and the song title is "Black Sabbath"! And you still want more Black Sabbath?? 😂 Ok, here you are: "N.I.B."; "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"; "Sabbra Cadabra"; "Changes"; "War Pigs"; "Sympathy for the Devil"; and the good but underrated "The Shining", from Black Sabbath's album "The Eternal Idol" (1987). Ah, yeah, and the name of one of the greatest guitarists in Rock History is Tony Iommi! 😉👍
More Sabbath song "musts", in no particular order, you might try are: Sweet Leaf__Sabbath Bloody Sabbath__Black Sabbath__N.I.B.__Fairies Wear Boots__Electric Funeral__Into the Void__Children of the Grave ... and I could go on. Geezer (Terry) Butler, on bass, wrote most of Sabbath's lyrics.
Tony Iommi has written some of the most iconic metal riffs in history and he had three or four of his fingertips chopped off in some kind of manufacturing accident. Hella crazy
Millie, I found a cover of this classic that YOU MUST watch!!!! It is ---- "Buckets the Drummer Paranoid by Black Sabbath covered in the bathroom" When you watch get ready for some intense head banging!!! It is fun yet pretty good. It has 66 K thumbs up.
Millie I have been listening to some Steppenwolf lately. The bass runs make me think of you. Please locate and review them, please. Born to be Wild, Screaming Night Hog, and many more!!
Great reaction and great song. Some other if you like are N.I.B. Iron man , War Pigs . Just a few. I hear Ozzy is going be doing one last album and tour. The pod cast is tomorrow (Tuesday) There could be talk about his last album. I'm not sure about it.
I know you reacted to this awhile ago. Ive always loved this song. Have you reacted to War Pigs? If not i know you would love it. The one with the official video is very touching.

Geezer Butler. Real name Terence Michael Joseph Butler. Geezer was an early nickname. Look it up. Kind of hard to explain w/o going into a lot of detail that makes a lot of sense. (Doesn't mean what you think it means). Just gotta accept the short version as is. Just a man.
a stiffer than usual performance here. they cleaned up their act on this song cuz it would be on television. a typical performance is what you saw in your war pigs reaction. loved seeing them (no bill ward) at the san antonio at&t center back in 2016. the alamo survived without incident.
Terence BUTLER affectionately nicknamed GEEZER by his older brother. One the nicest and most talented musicians of the era.

BLACK SABBATH IS THE FATHER OF METAL…
FIRST SONG, FIRST ALBUM…. BLACK SABBATH, BLACK SABBATH
IT STARTS HERE… ROCK ON 👊🖖
A classic banger! This song never gets old. Keep on rocking 🎸 🎸 🥁 🥁 😊🎉❤
Geezer is the glue of the band.. he writes a lot of what they did including lyrics
I think for a lot of us Paranoid was our introduction to the band. It is one of those songs that used to be included on every rock or metal compilation alongside the likes of Since you been gone & Ace of spades.

While some people will say it is overplayed or they have tired of it, for me it is still one of their best songs. That riff is just so god damn recognisable.
Rangemaster treble boost for the solo win. And as ever Geezer Butler's bass line is the secret sauce.
Ahh, is that the amazing fuzz pedal he's using? It sounds so epic/fat/big, thanks for the info!
Geezer is so underrated
Crazy how this song was written and recorded in 20 mins as a filler for the album "War Pigs". The record company change the name of the album to paranoid, without the band knowing.

Yep, was going to post the same about Paranoid.
Hey there 1 of my first songs i heard of Sabbs way back when i was a young lad in 72. Awesome , still listening now it wont leave you ever !!!
On October 1, the premiere of a stunningly beautiful video for the song “Baikal” took place on Diana Ankudinova’s UA-cam channel.

In the film itself, Diana voiced two roles - the spirit of Lake Baikal and the voice of the soul of the deceased mother of the main character of the film. The film received several top awards at film festivals.
Paranoid was written as a fill in song at last minute
"That sounds heavy..." welcome to the birth of Heavy Metal. Didn't exist before these guys

really really great to see "younger" people getting to know great rock/metal!
My mum saw these live in the 70s and Ozzy started the show by bursting out of a coffin
Last time i remember hearing this song, it was 1998 i was sitting stoned as hell on a couch, time flies...
Saw them in concert. We all went nuts when they played Paranoid.
Fun fact, it's one of most well know metal riffs of all time and it only happens in the intro.
The drummer Bill Ward will blow your socks off if you watch Black Sabbath War Pigs in Paris 1970.
Geezer Butler beating that bass like it owes him money!! Classic
Bill Ward , another drummer from the Birmingham area (UK) and John Bonham's (Led Zeppelin) mate. Both on the gigging circuit in the 60's.
Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Volume 4, Sabotage.....
the iconic records with Ozzy Osbourne on Vocals.
3:54 Terrence "Geezer" Butler also the lyricist of the band at that time ;)
Band line-up is: Jophn Ozzy Osbourne - vocal; Tony Iommi - guitar; Terry 'Geezer' Butler - Bass: Bill Ward - drums.

Geezer Butlon, the greatest bass player I've ever seen.
Geezer Butler is the perfect bassist's name, and so is Leo Lyons. Leo was the awesome bass player for Ten Years After.

Geezer and Bill rythem section only equalled by Rinus Gerritsen and Cesar Zuiderwijk
This was 🔥🔥🔥💥🔥🔥🔥. Only complaint too short. Songs needed to be short to get on the radio back then. I really dig this and Iron Man by them.
5 minutes too short!!!!👍👍
Someone I'm sure told you but the bass player is geezer Butler
Millie I have been listening to some Steppenwolf lately. The bass runs make me think of you. Please locate and review them, please. Born to be Wild, Screaming Night Hog, and many more!!

Geezer, he was the youngster in the band, as well as the principle lyric writer.
Although there are many arguments about who invented Heavy Metal, most Rock Critics defer to Black Sabbath. In America I would defer to Blue Cheer as the American inventors of the genre.
Geezer is his nickname. His real name is Terence Michael Joseph Butler. Too posh to be a rock star. You also have a problem with pronouncing the last name of the guitarist. It's also worth knowing that the "demonic" sound of the band, which was considered a forerunner of the heaviest varieties of rock, took after by accident. Thanks for the information on the band.
Also, due to his missing fingertips, Tony Iommi plays with prosthetic caps on the middle and ring fingers of his right hand...not sure how... probably can't feel the strings. The caps are briefly visible on some of their videos. He was also briefly a member of Jethro Tull. Not on any Tull albums, but he is with them on the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus performance.

You should listen to Grand Funk's song Paranoid from the red album. Different song completely, and if you love bass, it's got a killer bass riff . . .
