Thanks David! First found this series of videos last night on my way to bed, but didn't make it there until I'd watched every one! Very beautiful, useful, interesting and entertaining...at least for me. A lucky find seeing as I'm undertaking a study in geometry for design. But otherwise I think I'd be fascinated by these tutorials in any case. Firstly because it boggles the mind why geometry isn't taught like this in schools and secondly because this material is of great human interest. The straightedge and compass; prehistoric tools that we still use today to practise the equally ancient art of drawing. And the fact that people have known about and explored these geometric mysteries for countless millennia! The archaeology of geometry! You hit on it with the video about the Ying/Yang especially. I would love to know what you'd make of a very interesting book on that subject specifically, in which the author makes some very convincing speculations about the dawn of geometry, pointing out in incredibly illuminating detail how important geometry has been in shaping societies, religions and pretty much everything. The book is in two volumes. It's called "The Secrets of Ancient Geometry - And Its Use". The author is TONS BRUNES. I have digital copies I can pass on to you. I would love if you did a video or two on the Pentagram, David. Especially one involving its special relationship with the golden section. Do you think you will?
jerome! !! You must have read my mind! I'm just planning a series on The Golden Mean, including the pentagram, Fibernacci etc. It has fasciated me since I learned about it at art school back in the 1970's. stay subscribed! (if you haven't already watched the 'rusty compasses' method of constructing a pentagon, please watch it. It's apparently slightly inaccurate, but the method is so beautiful and perfectly adequate for artistic, rather than scientific work. I was taught basic geometry at school when I was seven. It seems most people don't learn it at all.! Yes the archaeology of geometry would be a great subject for a doctoral thesis!!!! What a pity the drawings for the pyramids and the Parthenon haven't survived!
Thank you for this wonderful series of videos. Back in the 70's two of my math teachers committed suicide in a 5 year period. I'm so thankful that these videos allow me to learn from you without you having to watch me struggle through.
I have learned so much from your Celtic series. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us. I look forward to the Geometry series. I avoided it in high school, now it's time to learn your way. Thanks again....Sharon H.
One of my favourite series! Informative, practical and oddly soothing in a certain way ;) Very aptly titled also. If only my math teacher back in the day had taken some time to teach geometry by illustrating its functionality in art, I would have found it less hard to digest... Many thanks David!
Geometry is a skill that will help when designing quilt patterns. Matching up Fabric can be tricky, because it stretches, so a preliminary pattern drawn up accurately and marked ahead of time saves you from do-overs. So I have been making the celtic patterns and planning. If you draw the patterns out on Freezer Paper, use the paper as your pattern. I'm so excited. When I complete something, I intend to send you the finished product.
