- The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan has slammed the Albanese government for declining a request from the US for support in the Red Sea.
The government will likely not be sending a warship to assist the United States in an operation against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
“This is quite an important moment in Australian history,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia.
“If our navy has reached such a pathetic state of incapability that it cannot deal with attacks by Houthi rebels using cheap drones, then we’re just kidding ourselves about having any impact on China or the Indo Pacific whatsoever.
“This is a shocking moment, both in what it says about the Albanese government’s complete lack of seriousness in this matter, the shocking state of our navy and the inability of the government to produce any military capability at all.”
All governments of Australia over the last two decades have failed to make sure Australia can defend it self in a conflict.

Australia federated in 1901 to achieve two goals. Strictly limiting immigration and creating a formidable navy. For decades the feds have failed on their two most important objectives. I argue we are no longer a federated country and our federal government should be dismissed.
I'm guessing if the $450 m Albanese spent on his failed Voice debacle had been spent on arming a few of our warships with anti-drone weapons, the Royal Australian Navy would not now be looking quite so forlorn.

We don't have limitless amounts of cash and thanks to sucsessive government's most of the profit from our dwindling mineral resources has not been channeled back into infrastructure, but has instead been wasted on businesses to try and prop up the labour market.
Now we are cutting back on sporting events and major infrastructure projects.
To start spending huge amounts of money now on defence does not make sense and would only impact on the living standard of middle class Australia.
China is no threat to Australia financialy or militarily.

As an American and student of military history I am shocked and dismayed at the state of non-readiness of the Australian Navy. Australia is an island nation, for crying out loud. Have they already forgotten the War in the Pacific (WWII)? Who are you relying on for self-defense, Crocodile Dundee? You were once great.

About 12 years ago I went with a school leaver to a defence forces engineering recruitment presentation. The airforce people obviously had low morale. The navy were looking forward to a new ship. At question time I asked them whether they were exploring the use of drone technologies. I knew the IDF were very proficient in their use. They all looked a bit shamefaced and the army recruiter said the PTB were thinking about it.

USA has failed in most conflicts, they come from a dominant power position w no room for diplomacy, nor seeing from the other side. They pretend great virtue... about freedom, democracy, human rights, sovereignty, yet have interfered in many elections, coups, armed terrorist groups, sanctioned to the point of starvation, lied to manyfacture consent for war, and couldn't even get out of Afghanistan properly. I agree with all that . But Australia also needs a good defence force. They setting us up for Gallipoli 2.0 if any conflict was to happen. Australia should have a large navy and air power. Australia went from self governing democratic colonies to a federated nation in 1901 to achieve two aims. Strict controls on immigration and to have a strong navy. For decades they have failed on both these things. I seriously believe we should go back to being unfederated states.

Australia is not Canada bruh. So don't think you can compare the two. Canada wasn't invaded by the Japanese in World War II. And Australia has been fighting a lot of wars with the Americans. There were Australians fighting in the American Vietnam War and their were Australians fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you combine the Rudd, Gillard, Rudd and Albo government, so that's 8 years and they bought 1 second hand ship have built 3 patrol boats. If you then count the coalition's 9 years, they built 4 Patrol boats and 8 other ships. They also built an Antarctic division icebreaker and bought 3 support ships to help in time of disaster in the Pacific and also for the islands of WA. My point is labor never support the military, they waste more money on the lefty crack pot ideas that never end up doing anything for anyone!

China at present has 168 ro ro ferries on order because the world's shipping can't cope with the number of cars it wants to export. Got this right. Our ADF is undermanned and equipment deficient. And public attitude, via Gubbermint attitude has created this. The ONLY part of our ADF that has reasonable capability is the Airforce. Not sure how many actual munitions are available, but the equipment and people to fly and support such are certainly not capable to sustain an active war footing.

The USN don’t have any frigates.
The United States doesn't produce Frigates or Cruisers at this time, the US produces Carriers, Subs, Destroyers, and Littoral Combat Ships, the LCS's are trash and decommissioned as soon as they are launched (No Joke), and the US still hasn't finalized it new Cruiser design no less lay a keel to replace the Ticonderoga's which are also being decommissioned.
The United States is in the preliminary design phase of its new Constellation class Frigate, prototype scheduled for commission in 2026, also the US does not operate "Frigates" currently and has not since 1994. Finally, the United States no longer has the ship building facilitates to build and equip more than itself at this time, or into the near future.
The US hasn't had a frigate since we disposed of the antique Oliver Hazard Perry rust bucket. Hopefully the big shots didn't ruin the Fremm design being built now.

There’s an Type 26 design change that can increase the VLS tubes to 128. The RAN might pick up a few of those.

As an American dont be so hard on the ADF. Realistically most militaries are having a recruitment problem. You could revert to conscription but then you've thrown out that democracy part.
I'm not trying to be negative but realistically Australia isnt big enough economically, demographically, or industrially to be a big player on it's own. But it doesnt have to be. Its sailors and weapons are well respected for their professionalism and skill. They are valued and respected minor players in any coalition. Just keep bringing your A game like the ADF has always done, big or small, and you're doing your part with nothing to regret or be ashamed of.

This seems to be a theme with the west, Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine for sure, and now Israel where it seems the whole world is telling them not to fight to win. War is a terrible thing, especially for the civilians, but dragging it out for years or decades is far worse than fighting to win and end the war as soon as possible. Pay our people properly, peacetime six month deployments are toxic to families, professionalism matters but the steam needs a sensible release, not idealistic temperance and toxic attitudes to community standards…our ADF is a reflection of our society and its values, but all too often we’re held to higher standards, and this is detrimental to retention.

As an American, I'm happy to see that there are at least some Australians who are waking up to the grim reality of their deteriorating defenses. Aussies are starting to realize that having a weak military is a grave danger to their country. Australia MUST take military strength more seriously. I can only hope Aussies realize that they can't rely on the US and UK for protection indefinitely. We don't want to admit it but it's looking like America's days are numbered as a great military, economic superpower. When it falls, it's allies better be prepared to stand alone because our enemies will be licking their chops.

The US army has the lowest number of soldiers since pre-Pearl Harbor if I'm not mistaken. The 20 years of being in Iraq and Afghanistan and the way both turned out at the end certainly doesn't help motivate the newer generation to go out and join the military. I'm not surprised by this. The military is doing almost everything they can think of to boost recruitment.

Drones are cheap, easy to handle, very effective and rather easy to produce.
A very good drone may cost the rebels 10k-20k USD, while a missile to take down one of them costs 1 million + USD, depending on the missile.
Those AEGIS cruisers that the US navy has are carrying around 90-100 missiles.
So you have a rather bad cost-effectiveness while also having low protection.
Iron dome showed how easy it is to over saturate defensive systems.
Imagine seeing a thousand drones coming towards your fleet. Like those Japanese Kamikaze pilots, just harder to target, way faster and in a huge quantity.
I dont know much about Australian navy/army whatsoever, but the drone warfare is causing issues from Ukraine to Yemen, no matter how good you think your army/navy is.
Australia should combine its navy and coast guard into one fluid system, then focus on pluraling its construction of ships to smaller faster interception craft with aegis weapon systems, whilst finding ships for acquisition in a lend lease agreement with the U.K and The United corporate states of America. Perhaps Using uranium as a leverage tool for assistance.

I served in the Navy for 10 years, at a time when they had to decide if we could afford the luxury of aircraft carriers. The situation hasn't improved. The previous government made a dogs breakfast over submarine procurement. If the navy is to be capable of defending Australia it would need to be more than quadrupled in size. So too the army and air force. How much protection do you want and how much are you prepared to pay? We were woefully unprepared for WW2 having sent our troops to the middle east and Singapore and our best men as aircrew for Britain. Since then we haven't learnt any lessons about the folly of sending our forces overseas. If Australia is attacked, what is the point of having an army in New Guinea or a navy north of Indonesia.
