‘Stretched thin’: Australia’s Navy unable to send warship to support the US

- Deakin University Professor Greg Barton says the reason the Albanese government denied the US’ request for a warship could be because our Navy vessels are “stretched thin”.
“The suspicion is that part of the calculation may be resourcing,” he told Sky News contributor Steve Price.
“We only have three air warfare destroyers, the Hobart Class vessels I consider the best match for defending that sort of aerial threat.
“They’re loaded up with sophisticated million dollar missiles, but firing million dollar missiles at drones possibly costing thousands of dollars is an asymmetrical disadvantage actually.
“The fact we only have three of these vessels means sending one impacts on the duty cycle for the other two.”
Perhaps we could send Lidia Thorpe instead!
Navy stretched thin, says the incredibly weak current Australian government. Quite the opposite of the Navy’s reaction, which was an immediate “we’re ready to go” response to the US request. I wonder which one is providing the weak deceptive response?

Even the Netherlands has a better Navy than Australia. That's pretty strange when your country is surrounded with water. But maybe that's the problem that your own border needs already a lot of navy ships to keep safe

well your country is part of jef so by working alongside the Royal navy and Royal marines you guys perform to a higher level and with aukus so will australia quality matters in any war even the americans respect our navy and marines

The Ausies should grab our decommissioned Ticonderoga’s. With some reconditioning these are very viable warships and can be bought into service fairly quickly.
BAE wants to build 3 higher capable vessels amongst the 9 Hunter class they are planning to build for this capability...

RAN needs 3 light carriers 1200 × 3 = 3600 men , 6 general purpose destoryers say 326 x 6 = 1956 men (Arleigh Burke complement) and at least 8 ASW frigates and 8 AAW frigates 208 x 16 = 3,328 men (Hunter class)
Total of 8,854 men for the surface fleet. How is that not extremely achievable? The US 12x the population, 15x the GDP but the USN is larger 10x the number of combat ships, 26x the manpower and 21x the funding.
RN need 3-4 fleet carriers, 12 general purpose destoryers, 12 ASW and 12 AAW frigates.

4 light crusiers, three Leander, 570 x 3 = 1710 men and one Town class 462 men.
5 V class destroyers each with 119 men = 596 men
2 sloops each with 160 men.
4256 men vs a population of 6,968,000, that's 1 in every 1,641.4473684211 people.
Today, jusy 14,745 sailors and Marines out of a population of 26,699,482 is one man in every 1,810.7481858257 people are in the Navy. Showing that the RAN personal is lower as a percentage than it was in 1939.
1939 the RAN had 13 surface combatants, today it has just 11.
The RAN is smaller today than it was in 1939 in terms of number of surface combatants.

i remember navy week 1970 ,s i was 7 years old we had the Oberon subs and many ships the hmas swan and others even had an aircraft carrier Melbourne and even a base in Malaysia, 50 odd years later and we now have no aircraft carrier ,subs what are always under repair .ships what get stuck in fishing nets .Australia built two Perry class ships in Williamstown should have never been sold.

Australia can't send anything because we can't afford it, especially after the US ripped us of on the F35 deal, and that was only a good deal to the US and we paid 2 to 3 times the original price
