Hertfordshire based organisations, Tribemix and Quantum Care, have developed a series of virtual reality experiences that take people living with dementia in care out of the residential homes and away to a range of relaxing places. The immersive 3D scenes include the beach, a forest or even to watch dolphins playing around a coral reef.
The project has already gained industry recognition as Tribemix and Quantum Care have been nominated for an Outstanding Innovation Award in Dementia Care at the National Dementia Care Awards.
The project began when Alex Smale, wanted to help his elderly neighbours to get outside after becoming isolated due to disability, “Our nearby residents, Stan and Dulcie, are 99 and 94 years old respectively. Over the past two years, we watched them go from active people walking into town to do their shopping, to losing their confidence and never leaving the house. When we began developing in VR for our commercial clients early this year, I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could take Stan and Dulcie to the beach?’. So I created a virtual reality experience to do just that. This led to a conversation with a friend at Quantum Care. They were fortunately very forward thinking, and understood what we were trying to do. The results have been amazing and it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever been fortunate enough to do.”.
Tribemix is now working with Quantum Care to roll the project out across their care home group. They are also working on developing the technology into training to allow carers and relatives to understand what it feels like to live with dementia.
I work with people suffering from dementia. Some of them are happy, still. Both most of them are quite miserable.. To see them be happy like this would would make me cry.. It would be so awesome if this became a new standard!!
Thank you for the work you do with helping those with dementia. I think that's awesome! I agree with you this should be a new standard.
I am a dementia friends champion and this type of thing is an essential aid. Dementia awareness is a vital project, but gets very little publicity, so well done.
I shared my Vive with our 80+ neighbor across the street, just two weeks before she died. I showed her 'The Blu', an 'under the sea' simulator, and she was enraptured. She told me about her son, long gone, who had loved to dive, and that now she understood why he loved scuba so much. She'd never been to the sea in her life. She was crying with joy, after the experience was over. She was so grateful to get to see what being underwater looked like, to feel like she was there.
If you know someone old, or trapped with disability, and you have a VR unit - share it. Go over, introduce yourself, and offer the experience. It matters. It helps. And you will make a friend... even if... not for all that long. It still is worth it.
I want to get one for my Dad who has dementia, I wonder what is the best game for dementia or best set?
@@SciSciToys horror
That sounds interesting thanx
💜
you were the note an 80+ year long story ended on
My Grandma has Dementia and she always talks about how she's lonely and wishes she could go back home. This is truly amazing!
A very noble pursuit and empathic use of the technology; that was quite emotional to watch, bless you all.
It was wonderful to see their spirits lifted and the joy in their faces: it gave this technology a powerfully therapeutic calling.
Wonderful!!
Had me in tears x
So lovely...even a brief escape such as this must be so deeply felt...brought tears to my eyes, wish my own mother could have experienced the same before her journey ended last year...
I am with you mrcyfift. My mom passed away last year due to a stroke, but she had dementia as well. I wish she could have experienced this too. Sorry to hear about your mom passing away.
A beautiful example of pioneering work that makes the quality of life so much greater for people living with dementia. All power to you guys for developing it. Well done. Every care setting should have it as standard.
Imagine what technology will be around when you are this old.
our last years or months will be us plugged into our fantasies and dreams and we wont realise we are dying but be in bliss till we do
Nah, with how biotechnology is developing, we won't be likely to die from old age... ever (unless you want to)
It's still vr but we dive into it our mind is inside of the game like SAO
by the time most of us are 90 they'd have cured certain types of dementia.
I wish someday make such a gorgeous stuff like you guys. Thank you for your job! Just look at this emotions!
Beautiful, just beautiful!
Must have meant the world for them...😭
I’m definitely going to look into this. Great video
Amazing video, just shows how powerful technology can be.
Great work Alex and Team!! Really moving....
This is something I can see working to calm someone and divert them. Thanks for this video I am going to look into this for where I work.
Brilliant stuff.
We need to make these more comfortable, as they feel very heavy and uncomfortable for some of us.
very emotional watching this, and i had gooses bumps! such a wonderful opportunity for people to watch.
Going to try this for my dad
Just Brilliant!
Just brilliant, I love this .xx
thank you so much for this
awe and wonder is the tonic for all of us, also helps with depression and anxiety. God bless.
What an inspiring video, further research and investigation to look at what benefits VR can bring is a must.
Going to share your video on my blog if thats ok. Good work you guys are doing. The residents seem really happy to play around with VR
Excellent stuff there. Fantastic!
I just love this@!
Spreading happiness is sooo awesome. I love this. 💘
Im gonna visit my 94 year old grandparents tomorrow with my brand new Oculus quest 2 and show them some of this, best idea ive ever seen i love it! My grandfather has severe dementia and abit of alzheimers along with beeing in a wheelchair 24/7 im hoping hell love it
Awesome! Thanks so much
Brilliant stuff..
what a great place to use it...
Wao!!! this is fantastic.. i really enjoy the video
This is how to market. Brilliant
Regarding the elderly/disabled: With the complexity of video games & technology nowadays patients could visit museums, national parks, zoos, castles; tour a city or historical landmarks, see the world wonders - or even partake in activities they used to enjoy like mountain climbing, parachuting, skiing, fishing, hiking, deep sea diving, hunting, hang gliding, flying a plane; or just relax on a beach or explore a rainforest - I mean the possibilities truly are endless! The *therapeutic potential* of VR for the elderly/disabled is absolutely something that should be invested in. To experience things inaccessible to you due to your mental or physical limitations is something that *needs* government funding & should be looked at as a *legitimate* form of healing & wellness. The boundless potential! It's a no-brainer, wouldn't you agree?
Great work. Keep it up. I cried. God has spoken.
That is very awesome! I only wish my mom could use something like this to keep her mind active.
get a samsungf phone and u can
This is fantastic!
melts my heart
Amazing!
amazing!
brilliant!!!!
such a wonderful good looking family !
i dont know why? but i am crying while watching this video
This is awesome
Invest in a 360 camera and get footage of a day in the life right now, perhaps just of your living room with your spouse and kids just watching TV. Perhaps take it outside and film a location where you frequently sat as a child, or as a young adult. Although you may not remember doing it, you might be thankful you did it in the future.
Yea! Science!
Es hermoso como la tecnología VR lleve a estas personas de la tercera edad a un estado de felicidad como este. Y mejor aún si puede ayudarlos a mantener su mente activa. El buen uso de la tecnología siempre será bienvenida.
I would love to get involved in helping work on projects like this. Please get in touch if I can help :-)
I am crying
First steps to San Junipero
Sign me up for San Junipero, permanent.
Awwww dear of them
I have an Oculus that I let my patient with dementia use sometimes & he enjoys going to places he used to visit before his condition became worst. He doesn’t have much time left so I’m hoping it helps.
God, I hope someday we get to provide our elders something close to "San Junipero" kinda of thing, you know? Because you can see they just have so, so much life left in them still, despite their situation. Like, can you imagine how fucking cool that would be? Say what you wanna say, but technology is our greatest good and, hopefully, mankind will learn how to make good use of it someday.
I think the virtual reality's commercial is true..
the commercial said
we can do what you can't...
can I get involved in this in the uk ?as a business interest ?thanks
VR ist the best ever. Support it !!!
Which device was used for this?
I hope that will be standard when I'll be old... 👍
I just realized that my late grandmother had dementia 2-3 years before her death, poor her, it deteriorates her.
I should've put this VR unit, or even other kinds of joy, she should've learn UA-cam I bet that could help to, should've bought her iPad
Someday..people in a coma and can't wake up..can talk and meet people in real-life using Virtual Reality that planed on their head
💓🙏
And what software?
Are there any games something like that for ps4? Any recommendations? I have a grandmother with dementia. I would love to give her a pleasant surprise for the holidays.
Yes, there is a headset called "PlayStation VR"
@Alicia Dolford ...hope this helps!

Amazing! I've shared in our Facebook page: fb/playeverstudio
Wish the graphics were a lot better.
Maybe that's just a prototype. I guess they might be able to make very realistic graphics when they can sell it on a wider market.
🙂
Nobody at any age should ever suffer from dementia. Let's make this a reality -donate to anti aging research NOW. If we act with knowledge, tomorrow will be a brighter day for everyone.
I'm a little worried how that first lady reacted when they had to take her out of it.
Hello. Please don't worry. She was absolutely fine. Much more relaxed and in a happier state. All ok. :)
Ah. Just wondered, since she seemed so paranoid at first, and then was enjoying it so much, but you didn't show her coming out of it like the others.
My dad would have cried and hit me if I tried to put those heavy goggles on his face.
This is incredible, and something hopefully many Alzheimer's caregivers will try to help their loved ones with dementia. Additional resources to help those caring for a loved one with dementia can be found here: heartsathomeusa.com/category/alzheimers-disease/
I think Donald trump should definitely get one... just saying
