      Thanks! This is an updated version of the first gardening video I ever made. I posted it to GUps facebook page - it went viral and had over 1000 views in a couple days! That was when I decided to make videos and post them. Now I just wish I could get that to happen again! lol

    Good stuff! Will have to try baking soda my self. Also, I want to suggest getting an inexpensive gimbal to help increase camera stability. I recently bought a DJ OM 4 SE off amazon and my god, has it improved the quality of my videos. I don't presently have any videos on this UA-cam channel but I'm in the process of putting together some for my website. Highly recommend a cheap gimbal. The increase in video quality is well worth the investment. Cheers!

      Thanks for the tip! This was one of the first videos I ever filmed. I honestly had no idea what I was doing and neither did my assistants who were holding the camera lol! I now have a selection of tools and trinkets for making my videos - several tripods, a butt ton of different microphones that I almost never use because as long as it isn't windy the phone mic sounds better than the nice ones, a ring light and green screen that I got to try out in one of my book review videos, I even invested in a teleprompter this winter for my scripted videos. Fun stuff! My office looks like a filming studio!

      @@GardenUPLandscape That's awesome! Yeah I must confess I didn't look at any other videos, so I suppose I got a limited sample size one could say.
      I know what you mean, I'm finishing up editing the first video I shot with my assistant and neither of us knew what we were doing either haha. Now I'm debating whether the video is good enough to release. I'm probably being way too nit picky but I feel like I could do better now that I know what to expect. I guess I can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

    Great video. I hate moss. My whole yard had it. I tried sprays and other chemicals, but in the end you still have to rake it up. I actually tried liquid iron. It turns it black and dead. But like I said I still have to rake it up. So just rake it up. I am hoping that once it is up all I have to do is keep the PH up. That is so much easier that the labor I went through to raking.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  3 роки тому

      I think you'll always have to rake it up to remove the moss whether it's dead or alive. But at least with baking soda it's non-toxic so it's safe for kids, pets and the environment! Just don't over do it because if you go too far alkaline your lawn will suffer.

    I would really love to see GardenUp create some informational gardening videos for those of us in zone 5b/6a who practice sustainability gardening, fruits and vegetables. Edible herbs and flowes as well as tea gardens. Our area has an extreme need for guidance that fits our short grow season by people who know how to make plants thrive! Can we make this happen?

    Can the baking soda be used to make it into a solution to be sprayed on shrub like a mock orange hedge without harming it? If so what would the mixture be for 1 gallon of water? Thanks!

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  3 роки тому +1

      Yes! In fact I use that mixture all the time to control Powdery Mildew and other fungal and bacterial pathogens! I add a little dish soap as a surfactant to make it stick well. The amount I use depends on the severity of the problem and the quality of sprayer I'm mixing it in, but it is usually about a Tablespoon for a 16 oz spray bottle, so maybe 1/8-1/4 cup per gallon. It's super scientific and exact, lol. The trick is to mix enough soda and soap to be effective, but not so much that you clog your sprayer. You can make it more concentrated in a good quality pressure sprayer than in a cheap spray bottle.

    Can you use baking soda on a tramack/asphalt drive? Is this safe for animals and birds?

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  Рік тому +1

      I don't know if any reason why it would be a problem for the asphalt. As far as I know it's safe for animals because I can't imagine a situation where they would eat it. Certainly don't go mixing it into their food and feeding it to them! If eaten straight it will react with stomach acid and cause problems. With birds specifically (I could be wrong on this part) they lack the ability to vomit, so if a lot of an alkaline substance appeared in their stomach the pressure can build up and cause their stomachs to explode. So theoretically, it could be dangerous for birds, but again, I don't think they would eat it unless it was mixed with their food.

    I have lots of moss within my grass in the lawn. Will baking soda kill or harm the existing grass?

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  Рік тому +1

      If applied heavily, yes, the baking soda can turn the grass yellow for a while. I wish I had filmed this, but I did a little experiment a few years ago where I dumped visible piles of baking soda on my lawn to see what would happen (intending to see if it was affective against snow mold lol). Well we hardly had any snow mold that year but I had yellow stripes and patterns in my lawn until summer! But we're taking about a LOT of baking soda, way more than you'd ever actually use to treat moss. Also, it fully recovered after a couple months.
      Just dust a little on the moss, wait a few days to a week and rake up the dead moss. Repeat if needed.

    I saw a great comments on what to do with the mass that you'll remove.
    They said not to put it in their compost because the spores are live and will multiply. If that is true that would be very useful information for your gardeners.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  7 місяців тому

      It's possible but I wouldn't be too concerned about that. If you are composting properly then the temperatures in the pile should get hot enough to kill moss and spores just like weeds and seeds.

    Grass also prefers slightly acidic soil, just like moss. Would therefore applying baking soda to a lawn be detrimental to grass?

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  3 роки тому +1

      I've actually been experimenting for several years with baking soda on my lawn to prevent snow mold. Last winter I dumped visible strips and patterns all over the place. I overused it simply for the sake of pictures, so I could remember exactly where I applied it, and just to see what would happen because I had this same question. In those areas there was so much baking soda that it did kill the lawn, which took most of this season to recover. (There was no snow mold either, but this wasn't a bad year for it so it didn't make much difference.) As I watered though, the alkalinity dispersed and the grass did recover.
      So, to answer your question, yes, in large quantities baking soda can damage grass. But the damage is not permanent, and there is no reason to apply it in that amount. All you need is a little dusting of it to control moss.

      @@GardenUPLandscape Thank you for your response. I need to do soil test to find out what is the current PH. It might be the case that my soil is too acidic and some soda can only help. I will use MossEx until I find out my soil PH, but I'm looking forward to use your backing soda trick.

    Nice video! Gonna try on my lawn. Just wondering will the baking soda kill the grass as well?

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  3 роки тому +2

      Not in the amounts needed to kill the moss. I did an experiment with this over the winter to see if it would prevent snow mold, but put the baking soda down thickly enough to see the patterns and it has turned the lawn yellow but it has not killed the grass, and it definitely did prevent the mold in the areas it was applied. Next year I'll do it again but not so thickly.

    • @GardenUPLandscape

      This technique does not put enough baking soda on to change the pH more than the top couple millimeters. You shouldn't use enough to affect your plants.

      You absolutely can, I talk about that later in the video. You just skip the first step of manually removing the moss. Start by sprinkling baking soda on the mossy area, wait about a week and the moss will be dead. Rake the dead moss up and reapply the baking soda if needed. I hope this helps!

      You can put baking soda on the grass, just not a lot. I dumped a bunch on a couple spots of my lawn as an experiment and I definitely do not recommend doing that! But a dusting over the moss is enough to kill the moss but wont affect the lawn at all.

  • @Eric__J
    @Eric__J 3 роки тому

    Why the hate of moss? It just indicates that your soil conditions are acidic, as you mentioned. In lawns you usually apply calcium carbonate, rather than sodium carbonate, to neutralize it. It's also much cheaper... The shrubs you're applying it around would be happier if you just left their soil acidic.

      To each their own. Some of my clients love their moss. I don't do anything to mitigate it unless they want that done.

    • @GardenUPLandscape
      @GardenUPLandscape  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks for you comment! You don't need to remove the moss using baking soda either, but then you'll have dead moss in your beds. This way it looks nice right away and the moss doesn't come back. Also vinegar can harm your desirable plants so you want to use extreme caution in flower beds, and it wouldn't work at all in the lawn, whereas baking soda doesn't have that problem.
