My drums were a gift form a friend, a '99 Tama Swingstar, we cut in halfs to build a traveler kit, glued wood veneer, he kept on half, i kept the other half... , and long story short... he passed away two years ago, and his family gave me his half drum set.. I glued it back... and this is my drum set. I worked on the bearing edges, put new drum heads and sound amazing. 🤘

Wow dude, I just started drumming and the way I got my kit is really similar. My best friend gave me a rusty, dirty Tama swingstar kit from the 80's about 3ish months ago, and I've spent about 2 of the past months resotring it. I can't wait to play it again once it's finished, it's sounding great so far.

Best drum video by anyone, ever. Required viewing for every drummer out there. Having done advertising for a major drum company, I can tell you from experience: product decisions are very rarely made based on “sound” or “function.” Instead, they are marketing decisions aimed at parting drummers with money they often don’t have. Good work!

I lusted after a custom boutique drumset for years and years because I grew up watching my favorite drummers play them. When I could finally afford to get one of my own, I still just sounded like me playing it, and I was a bit disappointed at first. Your channel helped me realize that our sound is influenced by a collection of choices that we make when we set up our drums, and learning how those choices interact with each other did more for me finding my voice on the drums than spending a bunch of money on a new drum set did.

The amazing irony of someone reviewing a knock-off whatever drum set and the comments being filled with “wow they sound amazing, just like a professional yada yada” and then someone reviewing a DW/Sonor and the comments mostly being people saying “yup, they sound like drums”

This is a great video especially for younger players thinking they need the best of the best to play well and sound good.
I still have my Rockstar DX set I bought new in 1990. At the time I was young but I knew they were considered TAMA's "budget" line. So I had it in my head they didn't sound as good as an expensive kit.
Luckily my mind changed a couple of years later when I started playing out a little bit. I was getting compliments on how good they sounded. I even did some studio recording with them in 1996 and they sounded great. I just made sure to have good heads and did my best to keep them in tune. Decades later I appreciate them so much.

Awesome topic. The more I play (and the older I get lol) the more I agree that what’s most important (tone & sound quality) comes mainly from:
    1. Heads
    2. Tuning
    3. Bearing edges being even/true/flat (and less of the angles), and most importantly
    4. How the player hits the drums/technique

Great video!!! It proves the old adage. You don't have to spend a fortune to sound great. I got my first drum set at a garage sale for 75 dollars. Orange sparkle tempro kit. 12, 16, 20. I didn't like the wrap so I stripped it, sanded it, and stained it. Upgraded the floor tom, and bass drum legs. I also upgraded the tom mount. I forget how much time and money i spent on that set. But it served me well!!! And I learned so much about drums.
I think the set in the video is a modified premier. Going by the shape of the lugs. They sound great!!!

I own 4 kits: my original Pearl W-5, purchased in 1981, a Yamaha Stage Custom Bop kit, a Gretsch Renown (my main gigging kit), and a made-in-Japan stencil kit from the 60's that I bought from a guy on Facebook marketplace for - wait for it - $80. I had the bearing edges recut by a local drum builder and put new heads on it. I probably have less than $300 total invested in the kit. Of all my kits, it has the most "character" and is probably my favorite to play.

Proves what many of us know and have known for a while. It's the drummer not the drums. A lot of us lust after really awesome looking drums but the reality is from a sound standpoint old funky drums can sound really. good. I understand why you used Calftone heads but it would have been interesting to hear it with single ply coated and maybe even double ply coated. We need to select our purchases with our ears...not just our eyes. :-). Thanks

If I was blind-folded, and hadn't heard the intro to this segment, I would never have thought it was a $50 kit, it sounded great. You are right, good heads, and tuning are essential. The manufacturers seduce us with shiny new toys, and I must admit, I think I need all this stuff when I really don't. Great video, thanks Ben and Cody.

I did something similar recently. I came in touch with an old Italian drum set from the 70's from a brand that existed for just a few years. I needed to do some adjustments to the mechanics (because they were terrible) and put fresh heads on it.
I'm really satisfied with what I ended up having and I got it for free...

There's this interview with Max Roach where he tells a story of the Bird. It's well known that Parker was a heroine addict. And in this story he tells, he reveals that much of what you're hearing on these old albums... of the Bird, was recorded with a plastic saxophone. Because he pawned his brass.

    • @marc8vino
      @marc8vino 3 місяці тому +1

I believe it was only one concert he played the white sax. it was not meant to be a toy. It was supposed to be the best plastic sax they could make at the time...still not very good. Yes, Charlie sounded amazing on anything he played. I'll have to look it up but I don't think that sax was on any other recordings.

    • @marc8vino
      @marc8vino 3 місяці тому

This makes me think that the mouth piece and reed have as much to do with the sound as the the materials a sax is made from. I guess that's for a saxophone channel. 100% the performer is more influential that what they are playing.

Really great video. It shows that tuning, and heads make more of an immediate impact than numbers of ply etc. I play a mismatched set of old Slingerlands that were ready for the dump and after some TLC and a re wrap, they sound and look great.

6:00 guilty your honor. Especially for cymbals for me... Swapped out some perfectly fine Sabian XS20 heads for some HHX hats, just because I wanted them to match the rest. Also I had an 10" Zultan Aja splash, perfectly fine, 30 bucks, changed it for an 10" HHX Splash to go all Sabian. It is dumb but smooth brain happy now.

Back when I started, my first kit was a MIJ Slingerland knock-off. I paid 150$ for it in 1999 and it came complete with stands and cymbals... The ride and hi-hat were crap but it did come with a Ludwig standard 18'' crash cymbal made by Paiste, not high end but still well made enough and a funky sound I loved... it's still on my current kit!! I started upgrading the cymbals first chance I got... The crap heads I didn't mind, I was still figuring out fills and shit!! But the cymbals really sounded like utter shite and an Avedis 22'' ride and a set of 15'' Paiste hats fixed that in a hurry!!
Before long I was in a band and we were about to get gigs. I changed the heads and my idea of tuning was pretty much in line with what you got there.... Ginger Baker was a huge influence and it was pretty much the blueprint for what I was shooting for. When we played our first show, it was all kids with drums stuffed with pillows so they kind of laughed at me because of the dry tone during soundcheck. Nobody was laughing during the set! It was an un-mic'ed gig and my drums were the only ones crushing it that night!!
I'd figured out pretty early on that you can tune a crappy set to sound good, but bad cymbals can't be fixed!! Over the years I've upgraded all my stuff but that shitty MIJ kit is still in my shed... It's my home beater while the good gear is at the studio!!

This is so true. Full disclosure: I own a *very* expensive drumset by a big name brand and I love it. But do I really need it? No. In my experience, pretty much anything in working condition will sound good if you have the skill to make it sound good. Hell, I've made drums that were not even in working condition sound... serviceable. The best way to improve your sound is to practice and become a better musician.

As a learner (still am) i got gifted an old mij kit i struggled to tune it, i followed tutorials, bought a drum bot, all new heads, then took them to an expert thinking about the tone so i request a roundover bearing edga, he recut the bearing edges and it sounded 400 times better and tuned like a breeze! So other than the style of bearing edge, having a functional bearing edge can make all the difference

A while back, before the pandemic, I used to go to this open mic night at a nearby bar. The drums there were by no means a shabby kit. A reputable brand. Probably an intermediate level kit. The kind one would upgrade to from an entry level kit if one started playing in clubs. But they had been somewhat neglected. They hadn't been tuned in ages. That they were owned by a non-drummer might have had something to do with that. Anyway, the house band asked me to sub for their regular drummer one night. I got there a little early so I could set the kit up to make it more comfortable for me to play. I decided to give the toms a bit of tuning. Now, I'm no master at tuning drums. But I just tried to get the heads in tune with themselves and to have the toms sound more pleasing when played together. I wasn't really striving for specific note intervals. I didn't really have the time to do a deep dive into it. I just wanted to get rid of any harsh undertones when the toms were played in unison. And of course I also tuned the resonant heads, which so often get neglected on house kits like this.
A funny thing happened. During a break, I saw a couple of drummers -- both regular attendees at this jam night -- at the kit, talking to each other. One was seated at the kit and playing the toms, not too loudly. Both drummers seemed pleased about something. I was too far away to hear what they actually said. Now, I had never seen two drummers do something like this on this kit, neither at this venue, nor at another venue with a better sound system with an actual sound guy on the mixing console. Usually these guys just got on the drums when it was their turn and played. No discussion about the kit.
So it just drove home the importance of tuning, of striving to get a musical sound out of the drums. It was the same kit. Same worn out heads. No muffling added. And yet these guys noticed a difference. I can just imagine that someone who really knew what he was doing could make these drums sound amazing!
Thanks to you guys for stressing the musicality the drum set. Too often, beginners and intermediate level drummers get too focused on playing fast licks or just bashing away on the kit. It's as if they've forgotten they're supposed to be playing a musical instrument, or that they're part of a musical ensemble. That's another story in itself. I find when the drums sound good, I can focus on listening to the whole band, the overall sound of the instruments together. Sometimes when I'm playing on a kit that isn't tuned well, I get distracted by any unpleasant sounds coming from it. I'll hit a drum and something in my brain says "Don't do that again!" And I wind up just listening to the drums, which means I'm no longer playing in the band. Sure we're making noise at the same time, but I'm not an integral part of the musical ensemble. And that's a bad thing. Because the whole point of making music together is to have a communal experience; a connection with each other and the audience listening. For me, nothing beats that experience. Having drums that sound great just makes everything even better!

Last couple of years i only use 18 or 20 kick and been playing few outdoor/indoor shows for few thousands people. The sound guys were amazed how awesome sound can make Gretsch Catalina 18 kick.. in some cases sizes of the drum do matters... but don't be afraid to use smaller or bigger drums, you can really surprise yourself! When i started playing out i didnt have mutch money.i wanted to buy a new kit and the only thing i knew was i couldn't afford a rogers kit and a set of zildjian cymbals so i bought a 5 pc. Set of royce drums, slingerland hardware, and got zildjian cymbals.they were Avedis,20"ride,16"crash and 15" newbeat high hats.this is the kit i learned how to really tune drums with.I played that kit out for over 10 years b4 i got my first set of ludwig classics used in mint condition.was able to continue to use the hardware and still have the cymbals today, witch is 50 years later.that set of royce drums were made out of bass wood, some of the cheapest shells on the market at the time.My band mates and other drummers raved about the sound i pulled from that kit.,as well as the cat running sound.cheap drums, good hardware, and excellent cymbals worked great back in the day.

Perfect! I have a friend who has several kits. Exotic woods--the whole bit. But the one that he still loves the most is his 1967-vintage Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl. I think all the exotic woods are just a way to make people pay a boatload of money for some drums. I think there may be something to be said for drums sounding better as they age, though. Any thoughts on that, guys?

Well....I love everything you're saying and trying to convey here. I currently own an older PDP kit that was gifted to me 10+ years ago, that I use for my main kit. In our band's main practice space my bandmate has an older Costco set, and I just bought an old Ludwig 3-piece "cocktail" set from a great drummer friend for $150 that I use in another practice space. So most of my money is in the cymbals, which I bring to each space, and all the drum heads that I swapped. I'm pretty happy with them all, but definitely can notice and feel the difference playing each one of these sets. FYI, the Ludwig set does sound the best, is the easiest to tune, and play.
When we do larger gigs I actually borrow a very nice kit just to have the peace of mind that the sound engineer will have an easier time micing it and get a better sound quicker than trying to use any of the other kits. Maybe my worries are unwarranted, but the fact that the "nice" kit feels better and inspires more confidence is a big factor.
As for this $50 kit you spruced up, I have to say I actually love the way it looks, and I guess I'm drawn to that older, beatup, vintage style, but the first time you hit that tom, I kinda cringed! 😬
I wanted it to sound better just for the sake of your efforts, but for my ears (and through some decent M-Audio studio monitors) I can't say that the sounds of those three drums, are making anything I'd prefer. The overtones are just too much and kind of wonky to me? Now I'm sure in a live performance setting for a jazzy type of gig they might blend in just fine, but unfortunately, "not my tempo". I'd actually love to hear more of what you can do with those drums, with different heads and a touch of muffling, for another comparison video. Again, I love the efforts, but just not the sound this time around.

Totally. Just last week, I played a Ludwig Accent as a house kit. In the Ludwig ranges it’s at the bottom, and something I’d scan past quickly knowing that fact. But at this kit, I had to use what was there. And: the kit was amazing. I absolutely loved the sound, it suited my playing style a lot. Didn’t have new heads, they actually looked like stock heads, but here’s a to me important angle : how you play makes a huge difference to the sound. The same kit in someone else’s hands sounds different. I find the same to be true for cymbals too, play them with a tight, then a loose grip and they sound different. Where I agree is : until you sit down and play the kit, you know nothing. :-)

    Hi guys,
    THANKS! :)
This reminds me very much of what guitar players usually say:
    - "Only The BareKnucke pickups make a sound, everything else is shit!"
    - "If it ain't made from mahogany it sounds like shit!"
    - "Tonewood! That is the key to good sounding electric guitar!"
    - "If it's cheap, it sounds like shit!"
    - "Get NOS tubes or you will sound like shit!" :) :) :) :)
Of course, when you ask them to provide evidence for these claims, they either shut up or say "Internet". :)
And yet, it has been proved time and time again that cheap gear no longer means cheap sounds. Oh, well...
Keep it up, guys, and thanks again!

I was hoping to hear a before and after starting with the old heads and then shifting to the new heads. I would have also liked to hear a comparison of tuning ranges with the new heads. How high could the heads be tuned and still sound good, and how low could they be tuned and still sound good. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. Just curious. Thank you for all you do for us here.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️

Thanks for watching! Alas, I don’t have the heads that were on it roughly 20 years ago but the point isn’t so much a before and after. Any set can sound like trash when tuned poorly. We wanted to showcase how great a set of drums can sound despite appearances and price tag. -Ben

I don't think it's a pearl kit. The lugs and lug count aren't seen on any pearl kits from any era.

Drum type and size effects your sound just as much as heads. If you put a 12 in pinstripes on a roto tom, it's going to sound totally different than a 12x12 power tom. If you put an ambassador then a pinstripe on the same drum it will sound close. Of course if you put on a damaged set of heads on anything it will be bad. A lower cost Yamaha stage custom set sounds great even with the stock heads. With a set of higher end heads they really sing. They can do anything any other set can. This is were I think the video really shows that. I usually prefer Maple but if someone else tuned them differently, and used different heads I would not know if they were maple or not. I can tell on a blind test if the drums are my tunnings and my head choices. Drum sizes are also just as important or more than heads. Of course a 12x9 tom can not do what a 14x14 floor tom can. I push my floor toms on my ludwig classic maple to it's lowest point for some songs. Some other songs just need a 16x14. I'm going to get a custom 15x14 to go with that set. I use bigger sizes for loud deeper big sounds. No matter what heads or running the 14x14 can not go low enough for some things...that's why there are bigger options. Thanks for the video and starting the conversation.

95% of the sound of the drums is the heads. i'll die on this hill. fresh heads and good tuning trumps shell construction, material and appearance every time.

Snare, Hi-Hat, Cymbals and the supporting hardware will make or break the drum sound. Those will cost money, even that "student snare" Acrolite.

Bearing Edges are the "true bypass pedals" of the drum world. When you're hitting your drums at a gig - they go into the mic - into the desk - out through the massive PA and blown all around by the air PLUS muffled by everyone else in the band AND the building etc etc etc. I GUARANTEE nobody in the audience is listenign to METALLICA going
" UGH!!! Those are NOT 45 degree bearing edges !!!!! IM OFF !!!! 😠!!! "

I got a beat up, brandless drumkit from a pawnshop almost 20 years ago at about $50 (it’s what I could afford back then). The previous owner stripped the wrap so I have no idea what the brand is.
I ended up just using the floor Tom and the 13” tom. The floor tomorrow was converted to a bass drum and the 13” tom into a floor tom.
Through the years, I modified the kick most especially. I stained it, did a little work on the bearing edges (questionable 😅), swapped the hardware, got the Peal floor tom to bass drum conversion kit, swapped into wood hoops, and got an EMAD batter, and Calftone reso. I am still amazed by how good the bass drum sound. I enjoyed it so much to this very day!
